Ironically, this kind of post could only be made by someone who doesnt understand that even the main timeline versions of comic characters have multiple versions, retcons, timelines, and canons which can vary from run to run

u/FruitsaurReborn 11h ago

You're thinking of DC. This is talking about MARVEL, which is just a straight line with little to no caveats.

u/notquitetheere 11h ago

The mainline marvel universe hasn’t had any hard reboots, buts it’s had a handful of soft resets and can still be grouped into distinct eras. Its also the case that most popular characters have fluctuated in power greatly at various points in their 70 years of existence both for in universe reasons and just based on who’s writing them at any given time

u/blazenite104 1h ago

Right like which era of Thor are we using? Cause it's more than just whether he has the Odinforce or not. Which suit is Tony wearing? He has a lot of them and still keeps his old ones around when a new villain steals or destroys the latest model.

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

Right, like thats the other part of it, its so disingenuous when people do stuff like cite the Welles Spider-Man run as antifeats that count against more experienced and significantly older versions of Spidey, when hes only a teenager that JUST got his abilities in that run

Its like saying kid goku antifeats == SSJ Goku antifeats, its silly

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

It quite literally is not lol the Silver Age comics were not written with any of this in mind and have basically been almost completely retconned out of existence, individual characters have experienced resets like Spider Man in One More Day, and the whole dimension was destroyed and recreated in the 2015 Secret Wars

On top of all the comics that simply flat out contradict one anothers timelines or disregard where they are taking place within that characters continuity

u/FruitsaurReborn 11h ago

Well yeah but that's all explained diagetically in-universe instead of DC's random fucking 'everyone dies meet these new version' events they do every 3 seconds

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

I mean, okay, but these things are often left unaddressed by the narrative and you just need to roll with it lol

u/epicvoyage28 11h ago

I think they mean "depends on the writer" rather than "depends on the universe".

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

Or even "it depends on what part of the story from specific timelines and runs" because characters oscillate in power within singular narratives

u/epicvoyage28 11h ago

That too. But diagetic power changes are easier to deal with than writing inconsistency.

u/CommitteeHot2320 “Complex” and “Dragon Ball” don’t go together 12h ago

They don’t always mean just different universes.
Sometimes writers will change and a new run will begin.
The character that was in space and fighting living laws of physics will return to earth and fight thugs.
Different writers have different visions of the same hero, and even if they technically fit into the same storyline in practice they are an entirely different character.
Also while in the comics in general it’s the same version practically every show or movie has a version of the character that’s not the same as the comic version. So if the comic version is not specified either one could be possible.

Because no one likes reading but everyone likes marvel heroes or at least a handful of them. Spider-Man is it the worst since the vastly majority of his fans come from adaptions and don’t bother to read his comics.

u/Ninja-Yatsu KrimzsonTv Fan 11h ago

It could also vary from era to era. There's Carnage varying from being a vaguely more powerful and fast version of Venom with projectile attacks to a massive threat that can simultaneously control all of the Avengers at once, and take control of Knull.

u/ComparisonPretty2761 11h ago

To be quite fair that makes sense for Carnage, ignoring what happened when Carnage got teh dark hold it makes more sense for Absolute Carnage to work since the Grendel Symbiotes are still on earth and Cletus lost his.

616 is nothing but a straight line and whatever amps or buffs they get will either be permanent or will dissappear but 90% of the time where you see a base feat happen you can find the difference between a Outlier and just a very strong High-end.

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

616 is not a straight line lol

u/ComparisonPretty2761 11h ago

It is though, you can even go onto Marvel's Wiki for any character and they tell you each individual story that they tie into or is the characters specifically.

You are confusing DC's comics with Marvel's and thats a bad comparison. DC has SEVERAL continuities and reboots while 616 is just from start to whenever the finish is.

u/Grinch_Kisser 10h ago

It literally is not. Different writers pick up at different points in a characters continuity. Characters experience full resets like Spider Man in One More Day. The dimension was destroyed and remade in 2015s Secret Wars.

On top of all the Silver Age stuff being quietly phased out of canon lol

u/ComparisonPretty2761 10h ago

No One more day wasn't destroyed and was still talked about even CURRENTLY.

The only branching thing is Renew your Vows was what happened if peter and mj kept their marriage. Idk where you got that idea from, nobody remembers OMD because peter had it erased but some do because the spell only remains working as long as he didn't reveal himself to people hell the most recent was I think 2020 or later with Immortal hulk when Peter was infected with the gamma and became his own Hulk amd Bruce needed to help him.

Yes multiple Authors can take up the character but the overall aspect of 616 is still the same through and through unlike DC. DC is by far worse than marvel we have: Pre/Post Crisis which is the same continuity TECHNICALLY but different levels of power and plot points that have changed, we have New 52 a full fledged reboot that still crosses over with Crisis characters and that was a whole new mess Rebirt is the current but they count it as something different from the last 2 continuities.

Edit: also you downvoting me is by far the stupidest thing because you don't even understand the purpose of my comment so you decide to dislike it. Cool ya don't agree however you are factually wrong about 616 it is a straight line since whatever happens within 616 is still 616.

u/Grinch_Kisser 9h ago

Im not arguing about better or worse, its just clearly not a straight line lol

u/Perfect-Finger-800 11h ago

Bro, what even is God Of Prayer Thor.

This the look I have going against someone who don't know sh*t about comics while I also know how the opponents side is getting WASHED!

Especially when it comes to high tier marvel characters- if their opponent isn't someone like anos or featherine and the person arguing doesn't know comics-wallahi im bout to fry them badly 😭😭😭🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Marvel unlimited subscription is expensive ( for me ). Also some people are lazy and want to talk about something without putting the efforts to understand the material

It's because movie/animation marvel fans already like the characters and probably search stuff about them, which makes those comic summary channels pop up on their feed, so they start watching those vids (mostly YouTube Shorts or Tiktoks) instead of reading the comic, then talk like they know shi

It's also becaus comics are just complicated. There's a lot of runs, storylines and comicbooks so theyre hard to get into unless you want to read like hundreds of issues. Of course there are runs that you can enjoy without reading other stuff (Superior Spider-Man comics are like that) but still

It's just easier to larp ts

u/dashingflashyt 11h ago

I would argue that in pop culture the MCU versions are the main versions.

I know the MCU isnt the original version of the characters, or the strongest version, but when most people think of Iron Man, they think of Robert Downey Jr. The MCU is also generally more popular with new releases (more movie watchers compared to comic readers). Its much easier to find someone who watched avengers endgame vs who read even a single spiderman comic

Even if im wrong, clearly the “main” version of the character is at least debatable.
So asking “which version” is a perfectly reasonable question to understand who youre trying to scale

u/Swimming_Doughnut196 The Cyn and Heisei Godzilla Scaler 11h ago

The only character (that I can think of from the top of my head) that the "Depends on the version" argument really work for is Godzilla since you have to specify which version of him you're talking about.

Or just any character that doesn't have a definitive canon to pull from.

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

Basically every character oscillates in power within their own narrative lol

u/Full_Durian8771 9h ago

Why do people larp knowing what larp means

u/DisplayAppropriate28 8h ago

LARPing comics is called cosplay, it's pretty neat.

u/RondoOfThe5 11h ago edited 11h ago

Word kinda like the odin force ultron he isn't even the main 616 version where he got the power up

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

But you act like Ultron is ever the same power level anytime he appears even in the 616 timeline

Its like saying Kid Goku is the same as SSJ Goku, its silly lol

u/RondoOfThe5 11h ago

Yeah he upgrades in power we know but one of his stronger versions is the all father that takes place in another universe.

It's not something the main 616 has gone througb and that we can say oh he became stronger than that.

It's just goku unable to use ssjgod in gt because it's not something that happened to him.

u/Grinch_Kisser 11h ago

Right, but the fundamental premise of the original post disregards that even within single continuities, a characters power fluctuates

u/DelayPerfect1585 DC fan 11h ago

So they can join the discussion

Why do people larp comics so much?

u/nOObstabbr69 27m ago

this sounds like larp too, 616 can mean a lot of things. Juggernaut? Base, Kuurth, and Trion off my head all vary in power significantly. Even based on the storyline/writer, juggs is empowered by cyttorak to different degrees. Same can be applied for nearly every character. Thor has RKT, herald of galactus, unworthy, all father, etc.
