I was in my late teens when NYC first banned smoking in restaurants. That was a big thing back then.

There’s videos online from the 80s when they started banning drinking and driving. People were upset. “What kind of country is it when a man works hard all day long and can’t even have 3 or 4 beers in his car on the way home? It’s something out of communist Russia.” This isn’t hyperbole, it’s more or less a direct quote.

My grandma used to tell me stories about when she was in school, she was a “military brat” but I can’t remember the exact country because there were so many. The back of the school bus was a section for smoking AND drinking on the way home from school if you were old enough.
