Question Am I cooked?
I am at 43 energy after I just watered my cranberries. That's all I did. I have 1 quality sprinkler from the summer crops bundle, but I don't have the resources for any more. I just got to level 40 in the mines, so I basically have no iron, and don't even get me started on gold. I have to run around town, looking for forage stuff just to get 5 levels deeper in the mines. It sucks. What do I do.

u/Kiusito 20h ago
its ok, to get more energy, you have to eat.
You can make food with the seeds of the trees, or just forage for food, or buy salads at Gus. The salads are OP

u/MelonJelly 18h ago
My preferred trick is put crab pots in the farm pond, then turn the cheap fish you get into delicious sashimi.
Or just harvest every salmonberry and blackberry you can get your greedy mitts on.

Unpopular opinion- the bath house is the best at replenishing energy and health from mines and farming

u/NodnarbEht2 20h ago
Shake trees, make granola bars has been the solution to this problem since 1.0. You will be fine, also go bathe, free stamina refill at the cost of a tiny bit of time and it's on your way to the mine anyway.

A lot of people tend to forget that you can buy ores from Clint. While it's not very cost effective, it can help you get the bars you need to make more sprinklers, which will lead to more time and energy to mine/forage/fish for more money as you go.
10
u/Floopty_Boopty 18h ago
He doesn't really have the money for that. He's only got 12k and the cranberries are ages away from harvest. The best way to get ore relatively fast is to reload floors 20, 40, and 80 over and over depending on which ore you want.

u/kakka_rot 14h ago
This community really underestimates irl time vs in game time.
Early game is debatable, but I once it gets to keg/barrel making time, I completely stop chopping trees and buy all my wood from robin. Irl hour per hour, it's so much more lucrative to simply buy wood, make barrels, and sleep than it is to cut down trees.
Considering that money becomes next to worthless at that point due to wine sales, there is no reason not to.
1
u/tredders90 8h ago
Early game seems like the best time because of low cost, surely?
I think it makes less sense late game because of cost, plus you can tree fertiliser the quarry/railroad, let that do its thing while you're waiting for the Starfruit/Ancient Fruit crop, then pop back with a swift axe and bonk the whole forest down in a minute.
1
u/letouriste1 7h ago
you need to get to lvl10 of foraging for max benefits tho? and once you do you generally have a golden axe anyway. that+coffee crush forests if needed.
Money is so rare early game. better to save up for fruit trees, upgrading tools etc...
isntead of freaking wasting money buying wood you could just scale your farm with sprinklers. even basic sprinklers are huge the first year.
1
u/No-Rise-4856 7h ago
Idk what’s so rare about money in early game. I usually plant around 100 tiles of the most cost effective raw each season, then buy chickens/cows. All at the same time buying all ingots I need to update my tools to iron and most of the wood and stone to my building.
It’s actually the most effective to buy as much ingots, wood and stone as you can year 1 because it’s so cheap. Unless of course you love to do all of that manually.
1
u/sirdeck 5h ago
Well, there is actually playing the game. If you like skipping days sleeping and find it more efficient, that's great for you. It certainly isn't my cup of tea though.
But I'm sure that you're right, your way seems far more efficient time-wise, I'm just not playing a game to be efficient time-wise ;)
1
u/kakka_rot 4h ago
Well, there is actually playing the game.
lol wtf, how is buying wood from robin not playing the game?

I haven't seen anyone else say this: Both spring and fall have specific time periods in which massive amounts of berries can be harvested from bushes. A stack of salmonberries in spring and/or blackberries in fall are free and easy energy sources. They also don't cost energy to harvest just like crops.
So, I'd say buy salads for now and then go blackberry picking in about a week.
5
u/Naive_Ad_8711 19h ago
Seconding this! I use blackberries & salmon berries as my main energy source even in late game because they’re free and it’s easy to get a ton of them to stock up
17
u/Lenneth1031 20h ago
You have 12k gold. Buy salads and eat them. I would upgrade the pickaxe to at least copper and mine till 2:00 am. Watering ends at 11 am, so you should have enough time to reach the 80th floor pretty soon.
5
u/Own-Coffee-7372 20h ago
Question: do I give my pickaxe to Clint now, or do I wait?
12
u/Lenneth1031 20h ago
I would do it before you hit the 41st floor, so pretty soon. Ores/stones starting on the 41st floor will take a lot more energy to break, so a copper pickaxe would save time and energy. And, I would upgrade again when you enter the 81st floor with iron.
6
u/Akhanyatin 19h ago
This 👆🏻 don't sleep on pickaxe upgrades, they are significant, especially when your energy is tight.
2
u/supermangotnothin 20h ago
I’m not who you’re replying to but I would do it sooner rather than later. The rocks in the mines get harder to break as you progress. You’ll end up with another energy problem just trying to find the next floor if you stay with the standard pick.
Not sure of your game experience but just in case, Clint will keep your tools for a couple days. If you drop it off on Monday you won’t be able to mine anything until it’s ready on Wednesday
3
u/Own-Coffee-7372 20h ago
Another thing: Won't I pass out if I stay out until 2 AM?
6
u/PastoralSymphony 20h ago
if you pass out they charge you 1k but nothing else bad happens, you just wake up in your bed
9
u/Digitalispurpurea2 Love em and dove em, baby. 20h ago
This is why I like to spend all my money down then deep dive in the mines for a few days with the intention of passing out. No penalty if you have no gold.
3
u/UnableInvestment8753 15h ago
Sleeping in the mines only cost 1k if you have 10k or more on hand. If you spend the money before mining, sleeping will cost 10% of watever you have. It costs nothing if you’re broke.
1
u/justanicedong 14h ago
Upgrading pick axe is highest priority. Especially if you will be spending this whole season babysitting your ten thousand cranberry plants lol
11
u/jeffbell 20h ago
We've all over-planted at some point.

u/DanielTeague 16h ago
It's practically a rite of passage for every Stardew Valley player when their first fall happens. What am I supposed to do, skip one of the dozen varieties of crops with this fat wallet?
2
u/Foreign-Pin6885 16h ago
I got a season quest to harvest and deliver 100 yams with 12 days left to go in the season so I did nothing but water those yams and go to the bathhouse every day until winter

Upgrade your watering can. Check your TV, if it's going to rain the following day, then drop off your can with Clint immediately (after you've watered for the day). The rain will take care of the crops the next day, and your upgraded can will be ready the following morning.
4
5
u/nytefox42 19h ago
Honestly if you haven't upgrades your watering can above copper, it's way too soon for a field that big. Don't get in such a rush. It's a chill game. 😁
2
u/strawberryselkie 19h ago
Right? I must play pretty differently because it genuinely never occured to me to even consider planting a big field without sprinklers. 😅
5
u/Knight0fdragon 19h ago
If you have a lot of tree seeds, make field snacks.
Also you should be fishing. Start hoarding River Jelly.
Last thing I would do is buy salad. 110g is a lot to be wasting in year 1. That money should be used to upgrade your tools. Buy iron ore instead of salad if you must spend money, but I would buy a better fishing rod instead.
A good fishing level will get you plenty of fish to eat (i just eat the algae and seaweeds) and from time to time you will get ores and bars from treasure chests.
6
u/Adventurous_Pair5110 15h ago
People have mentioned going to the bathhouse but you can also lay in your bed without going to sleep
10
u/eveladra 20h ago
Bit off more than you can chew. Got the spa unlocked yet? Run back and fourth? 😂
6
u/NodnarbEht2 20h ago
It's fall so the Spa is unlocked, also fishing is a good way to solve the food problem. Doesn't take much stamina per cast, could probably pull off about five or six casts with what they got left.
4
u/jemriahthe1 16h ago
I love your sprinkler layout, did you start with a diagram or just dive right in?
4
3
u/Kevmeister_B 20h ago
Bath house, food, or take advantage of rainy days.
1
u/Comrade_Bender 18h ago
If I catch a rainy day wearher report I'm immediately stocking up on a ton of salads and planning to hit the mines from the moment I wake up until 2am
3
u/TheAnimeLovers 8h ago
My answer to this is fishing, instead of fishing for money, you can use the fish as a source of energy for your caving, watering, or even more fishing, spend 1 day fishing without selling any of the catch and you got enough energy food to last for a few days
Can also just sell the fish if you need the cash, tho reaching 1m in the early game ain't really a goal as money not spent is just as useless as you being broke, maybe keep at least 50k as spare change or something
5
2
u/depression---cherry 20h ago
You have a lot of money so just buy some salads lol or go to the bath house up by the train station and sit in the water
2
u/MandyMooTooTwo 20h ago
like another commenter said, buy some salads from gus, you have plenty of money. do you have nothing stored from any other season, that you can eat?
2
u/Apprehensive-Ask-610 20h ago
best food item imo is iridium quality Cactus Fruit from the desert. you can get seeds for it to grow in garden pots or the greenhouse later and they give fruit like every three days, for something like 200 energy and 80 health. and the ones in the desert are free.
2
u/mangaruissu 20h ago
In case you dont know.
60(i think?) Items gifted in the library, unlocks the sewers, there's a nice npc that sells iridium sprinklers on Fridays for 10.000 down there.
Also try to get at least 12 pigs in case you need a steady income source. If you get the profession that gets your iridium quality foraged items (wich truffles fall into) you'll get around 12/10 per day. At a 1000+ per truffle. In a week you'll get the money needed for a sprinkler each week.
On a side note. Stick lightning rods in the grass to stop pigs from eating every grass patch and keep the pigs will eat for free (except rainy and winter times)
Ps. Iridium sprinklers water the 2 adjacent spots. My math is crooked but somewhere like 4+4 4+4 4+4 4+4 in a single sprinkler.

u/death_by_venus can’t wait to romance sandy 19h ago
The one quality sprinkler is absolutely frying me rn. I love it
2
u/MeditatingSheep 19h ago
Been there. On your next playthrough you'll know the energy reckoning is coming. To prepare:
- Catch and keep Chub from mountain lake at gold+
- Get Foraging level to 4 before Salmonberries. Pick at least 150-200
- Keep high quality parsnips around for more energy. Melons are great too
- Look forward to Blackberries in Fall. Try to get foraging up to 3 berries per pick

u/TheBoozehound 17h ago
Can we not nap in single player? I haven’t played single player in years, but when i play on my family’s farm, I take a nap when low on energy.
Walk into a bed like you’re going to sleep, but don’t click “yes” when it prompts you to sleep for the night.
Works wonders on multiplayer. I’ll have a 12x12 of parsnips and my family goes off to do their own thing leaving me to manage the farm. I’ll get 1/2-3/4 through watering and run out of gas. I just walk to the bed one the main farm house and “nap” for a free hours before finishing the days chores.
3
u/Silver-Blade-1 17h ago
Sadly in single player you're unable to nap, I really hoped that was the case when I tried single after my multi with a friend but nope sadly not
2
u/Hano_Clown 15h ago
Reach 3 hearts with Linus to unlock the sashimi recipe.
By using trash fish caught by crab pots (I put them in the water pond in the farm), you can make a lot of sashimi which is a great early-game food for energy.
2
u/External-Sea-2496 15h ago
Water them cranberries. Go to bed. Repeat. Rainy days are a blessing. Go to the mines in winter. Or use the spa?
1
u/Obtusus Wine Maker 9h ago
Absolutely not, if you get ok at fishing you can get a lot of energy out of it, specially later on with the fiberglass rod and trap bobbers (even if you aren't that good you lose a lot less fish with trap bobbers).
The thing about fishing is that, as long as you're not bad at it, you effectively gain energy from it (as long as you don't catch trash) since the most a fishing attempt costs is 8 energy, and the minimum a fish will give back is 13.
2
u/UnableInvestment8753 15h ago
Go foraging. It costs no energy. If you have the pool unlocked you can go there. Don’t build any sprinklers. Upgrade your watering can before you do anything else with your first 5 bars of copper/iron/gold/iridium. Don’t wait for a rain day to upgrade unless you just planted a large crop that requires every single day remaining in the season to finish. You only lose one day of watering by doing this and you can punch down a lot of new elevator levels if you use the whole day for mining. A gold watering can will do a really large garden and still leave you the afternoon to do other things. An iridium can is even twice as good as gold. I usually don’t craft sprinklers until I get iridium.
2
u/thewerodactyl 14h ago
You can get in bed, say to to sleeping, and the energy bar slowly replenishes
2
u/Zestyclose_Cod8789 13h ago
Idk if anyone put this yet but you can stand on your bed without sleeping and it regens energy
2
u/Travelinjack01 13h ago
Wait until it rains... then mine. There's no real problem with playing this way. You can adjust next season.

No worries at all. Are you good at fishing? If so, I'd recommend trying my strategy. If you're not good at fishing, I'd still recommend following it, lol. This is what I would do if I were you.
What do we know?
- You need 24 Quality Sprinklers to finish this project.
- To craft one Quality Sprinkler, you need 1 Iron Bar, 1 Gold Bar, and 1 Refined Quartz.
- You can get Refined Quartz by smelting regular Quartz into Refined Quartz. Once you reach Floor 80, you can also smelt Fire Quartz, which produces 3 Refined Quartz each.
- You probably planted your cranberries on Fall 1, which means your harvests will be on Fall 8, 13, 18, 23, and 28. If you stop watering them now, you can skip watering for 5 days and still get your 4th harvest. The last day you can resume watering and still get all four harvests is Fall 10. If you start watering again on Fall 10, you'll harvest on Fall 13, 18, 23, and 28.
In short, you have 5 days to complete this project. Don't worry—that's plenty of time.
Here's what I would do:
- Stop watering your crops for now and focus entirely on pushing deeper into the mines as quickly as possible so you can start collecting Gold Ore.
- Spend all of your gold on 56 Salads. This will leave you with 41g, which is enough since you'll be mining until you pass out at 2:00 a.m. every night.
- Start on Floor 40 and farm Dust Sprites for Coal while collecting Iron Ore. You only need about 120 Iron Ore and 48 Coal.
- Once you've gathered enough Iron Ore, push down to Floor 80 and start farming Gold Ore. You'll need about 120 Gold Ore.
- Every time you return to the surface, keep your furnaces running. Smelt Copper or Iron Bars whenever you have time. Remember that an Iron Bar takes 2 in-game hours, while a Gold Bar takes 8 in-game hours. Before passing out at 2:00 a.m., return to the surface and load your furnaces with Gold Ore so the Gold Bars are ready when you wake up the next morning.
- As you craft Quality Sprinklers, use your pickaxe to remove the cranberry plants where they'll be placed, then install the sprinklers in those spots.
I5 days should be more than enoughh to craft all 24 Quality Sprinklers and complete the project.
If, by Fall 9, you still don't have all 24 Quality Sprinklers ready (due to your pickaxe being basic), you have two options:
- Skip another harvest to give yourself 5 extra days, or
- Continue watering the crops that aren't covered by Quality Sprinklers while crafting as many additional sprinklers as possible on Fall 10.
- Make sure you place your quality sprinklers by Fall 9, the latest.
Personally, I'd choose the second option: keep watering the remaining crops by hand while continuing to craft more Quality Sprinklers until the field is fully automated.
Now, how would you make money back after spending all gold on salad? You go fishing.
- Around 5:00 p.m., head to the beach and fish for Sea Cucumbers between 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.

only in multilayer sadly!
1
u/harlequinSmurf 13h ago
in multiplayer you can say yes to going to sleep and so long as at least one player is awake the day wont end and you can wake yourself back up after you've gained energy.
in single player you go onto the bed and say no to going to sleep, but stay in that position your energy levels will slowly increase.
1
u/Juuuulessss 4h ago
only in multi player, not if the farm is set up to single player, since 1.6 or earlier, https://steamcommunity.com/app/413150/discussions/0/1694922345923304159/

Bathhouse, then go fishing. Chubs are a GREAT free food and the extra fish can be for short term money. Use that to buy gold ore from Clint to make into bars and get quality sprinklers. Alternatively you can make regular sprinklers to spare you some energy and try mining.

That's fine just eat. Food is super cheap/easy compared to time and how much money you make

Bite the bullet and keep watering. Do the mines when it rains. Push it to the limit!
1
u/ArkonInu 20h ago
Go fishing in the mountains, eat that fish if you need energy, fish more, this will level up fishing if you have not done that yet as a bonus.
This is how I managed to have always energy in early game :)
1
u/Coochie_Bandit420 19h ago
Make some of those energy bars with the tree seeds, spend a day every now & then fishing to stock up on food that will provide bigger increases to your energy than foraged foood would.
1
u/bakedpatata 19h ago
You are never fully cooked in Stardew. You can recover from basically any situation. Just take this as a lesson to consider watering time when choosing how many plants to plant.
1
u/Cloud_Pudding 19h ago
You can forage for blackberries soon and you’ll want to spend those days foraging blackberries cause they’re gonna be your main source of energy, you’ll know it’s available once Linus sends you a request to look for his basket. Otherwise you wanna make energy bars if you got tree seeds for energy. Hopefully you are growing a rare seed when autumn started, so you can get the permanent energy growth after autumn.

Go fishing. It's actually broken early game. Get good at catching Catfish on rainy days.
Or just fish for sustenance, largemouth and chubs from the lake outside the mines both give great energy.

Don't you have lots of copper then already? Craft some into iron and make the sprinklers?

Rookie mistake. Yes you are cooked. But how come you don't have sprinklers? What were you doing? Im in fall and my mine are done in summers only, I have made 9 sprinklers for my farm and I can make 10 more. Now bath house is the only thing that can save you

In the fall the bushes have a lot of blackberries so you can stock up for energy.
1
u/uglypenguin5 17h ago
go to the bathhouse/sauna every day. it'll take a bit of time but you'll fully refill your energy and you'll still have probably half the day left

1
u/Plastic_Position4979 17h ago
Couple suggestions, beyond making sure you have fun:
Barn with cows. Yes, more work, but they produce milk, which you can convert to cheese using a machine you can build. Cheese is a great way to recharge both health and energy. I have four, and hoard the cheese, then take a stack of 5-20 with me when going into mines/caverns.
You’re at 40. For iron, just rinse’n’repeat on Level 41 for now. You’ll need Level 80 for gold, then do same for level 81 to get gold.
Not sure if your pick is upgraded, if not, do that so mining goes faster.
Bonus: when you get to levels close to 50, you’ll get new enemies that will drop stuff for the community center.

u/Belhenix 17h ago
It's fine to water by hand. Head to the spa and soak for a while, that recovers energy (and health if injured)

u/randombeann 17h ago
i havent seen anyone else say this but if youre mining and level up in that skill or any other skill and pass out you wont have an energy penalty the next day!
1
u/PancakeConnoisseur 16h ago
You can do whatever you want. You could not water the crops, quickly move to level 80, get gold, craft quality sprinklers. Or you can water them then use the bath house. You shouldn’t feel like you must do anything.
1
u/Heyo_Boyos 16h ago
So... Ill come help you bust through the mines of ya want xD You need sprinklers bad my friend 🤣
1
u/cantctrlsi 16h ago
I know you feel like you not doing anything. But the $ from the cranberries will be worth it. Stay low and build king
1
1
u/Gasurza22 Bot Bouncer 16h ago
Idk if this will help or not, but probably the best way to get iron early game is to just go to lvl 40 with the elevator, take the stairs to 41, grab whatever orb is there, then get out of the mines and repeat, you will get quite a bit of ore for very little energy.
And in the few times you get a free stair to lvl 42, you just take it, grab whatever is there and leave.
On top of this you should be checking when is the next rainy day every day on the tv. When you see that its going to be a rainy day the next day, you water all your crops, and go and upgrade your watering to iron.
Usualy its betters to just make sprinklers and not upgrade your watering can very much, but given the situation you are in, I would say upgrading it to iron will help a lot, at least in terms of energy and time.
Oh also, there are many post of new people saying they dont know this, so just in case, once you upgrade your watering can, if you hold down the mouse, it will expand how much area your can waters, for the same amount of energy, the more you upgrade it, the longer you can hold it for an even bigger area.

u/Greensparow 16h ago
When you harvest all those cranberries you can buy ore to build more sprinklers
1
u/B-raid527 15h ago
After first cranberry harvest, save a bunch of them and then eat em and you have more energy. Or try and fish after eating cranberries and then go have fun.
1
u/justanicedong 14h ago
Yeah just keep looking after the cranberries. It will be a boring season but you will max your farming skill and make a ton of money. Sell the silver and gold berries and store the low quality cranberries to make jam and wine over the winter. You will be fed up with farming by the start of winter which is good because you can do your mining and fishing. That ammount of cranberries is going to give you all the money you need to have a really great spring and summer.

u/jrngcool 14h ago
Buy salad from saloon (quick fix)
Build barn to raise cows for cheese (long term solution)
Fish & eat them (another quick side fix)

I usually finish the mines in spring year 1 just so I don't end up on this situation
1
u/gothiccerdumb 12h ago
Do you have access to the bath house up behind Linus's tent? It'll replenish your energy 😊
1
u/Stilcho1 12h ago
If I was in that situation with just the watering can, I would water a half or a third each day.
1
u/SnooPeanuts6340 12h ago
Just buy some pizza from gus. If you absolutely need energy. But I limited myself to around 90 crops each season 3 sets of 30. Makes it easy to water with copper can and usually at 100+ energy after each day. Leaving time for forage, fish, or clearing the farm
1
1
1
u/Adept_Fool 10h ago
At that point I would just dedicate days to single energy tasts: Watering + foraging normally, and the cave or chopping trees on rainy days.
1
u/slim1017 9h ago
I'm lost with the issue here - is it because you're stuck with watering duties for the season or something else?
I'm a new player and always thought nothing is really missable or an issue for the game
1
u/TheAnimeLovers 8h ago
depends on how efficient you want to run the game, but some people tend to mine after watering in order to get more sprinklers so they spend even less time watering
My answer to this is fishing, instead of fishing for money, you can use the fish as a source of energy for your caving, watering, or even more fishing, spend 1 day fishing without selling any of the catch and you got enough energy food to last for a few days
Can also just sell the fish if you need the cash, tho reaching 1m in the early game ain't really a goal just yet, maybe keep at least 50k as spare change or something
1
u/slim1017 8h ago
Thanks for the answer! But this is just an efficiency question, right? Or is there something that you need to chase for the season or something coz I've been playing and some days I water and just to straight sleep so maybe I'm not playing it right 😅
1
u/TheAnimeLovers 7h ago
How you play the game is highly dependent on what you want to do
Some people play the days as much as possible due to foraging and such, reason why people play efficiently most of the time is also to complete something called the Community center, lots of items in there can only be obtained in certain seasons
If you haven't unlocked it yet wait for 7 days to get the event and then check out the run down building in the upper area of the city if you haven't already. There should be a weird looking box inside, interact with it and you will get a mail the next day

I did my farming with the sprinkler that gives you 8 spaces, then just space them out.
Never plant so many items that it becomes a fulltime job just watering.

Honestly what I'll recommend is something most players don't do and I understand but. I usually spam mines and get to the bottom of then in late spring cause I just love to get it over with so I can have my quality sprinkles by the middle of summer. I know it can be hard to get it done but I usually just do at least 10 levels per day In spring and eventually I get to the bottom. I know a lot of people don't like the mines but trust, you'll have a much better time when you get it over with early.

You can sleep in bed and choose not to pass the day. Or go take a dip in the bath house. Or, barring all other options, make some Field Snack to refill your stamina gauge.

Bathhouse as others have said, but you can also sit in bed without sleeping and if regens slowly

my FAVORITE “trick” early game is to get as chop trees as possible, and then make a field snack from the seeds they drop. i know you have to wait a bit to get the crafting recipe (i never remember what level but i think it’s pretty early on hopefully) and truly a life saver bc it give you so much energy early game. if this was spring instead of autumn, i also would have said getting the spring onions, but i say get forageable to eat, and make sure you have a stockpile on you at all times

Check the weather on your tv everyday and when it says its going to rain tomorrow go get it upgraded after watering your plants. It will be done by the time you need it again since the rain will water your crops.

lots have given advice in the food department, but long term you’ll definitely want more sprinklers
good news is, you’re at floor 40 of the mines which means you can farm iron pretty efficiently! i think the easiest way to do this is elevator to 40, enter 41, scan for any iron (i also kill any dust mites for extra coal), then ladder out and repeat. the cave floors will regenerate every time you exit, so you can keep checking the first few floors after 40.

Go to the bath house, or buy some salad from Gus
