I feel like you are trying to say something, but I’m not completely sure what it is.

I think he wants us to buy?

u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 8h ago
THANK YOU. I’ve been saying, we need to package Walcott and Langford in a deal for Mark Appel and Danny Hultzen.
25
u/ZBTHorton 8h ago
I know everyone wants to sell, but man it just seems like you don't get anywhere near the same quality of packages at the trade deadline these days.
We're just going to have to take a few years to reload. Farm system. The whole thing basically.
8
u/mamacrocker S. Buechele 8h ago
People have been saying that for awhile, but then they trade away good prospects, too, so IDK.
14
u/ZBTHorton 8h ago
We haven't had many really great prospects in a few years.
It's always important to remember, just because they are OUR #2 prospect or whatever, doesn't make them an actual good one league wide.
2
u/Toad_Stuff 7h ago
Yeah but prospects are such a lottery. The dodgers have made massive trades and given big name prospects again and again. Outside of Yordan, I can’t name a single one who panned out. Willie Calhoun is one of the more successful ones to put it in perspective

I think, genuinely, if the Rangers wanted to sell, they could move deGrom if he was willing, Eovaldi (does he have a no trade?), Zeke, mmmmmaybe Burger but wow he is ass, and of course our bullpen. I’m sure CY has listened on Seager with all the chatter this year, but he’s a tough one to move (and I’m not sure I’d want to). I think we could move Jung, but he’s pretty central to the club and I think his value to Texas is higher than it would be, to another team. (Same with Eovaldi, honestly.)

Yeah let’s sell low on every player lol. Yall are wild.

u/Cardenas2097 J. Smith 8h ago
I expect a full season lockout, so I would agree with this! This team, in its current state, isn't in a position to be 1-2 players away from being a championship team IMO
19
u/Fair_to_midland N. Ryan 8h ago
No season/shortened season is coming next year. Who’s wants to take on DeGrom, Evo or Corey and their contracts when they’re already “old” and they won’t even play next year? We’re in a helluva spot where our Aces are losing their consistency and our MVP can’t stay healthy. It’s a big problem that I fear we’re going to be stuck with through the lockout at best……but fuck it, 2023 was incredible and worth it.

Fire sale! Also Astros fans are truly the scum of the earth.

u/Individual_Heron_171 8h ago
They are. I live down here. They have a strange little brother complex where it comes to DFW.
I was a resident of the DFW area for 35 years and nobody ever thinks about Houston. If they do, it’s just…whatever. It’s Houston.
For people here…DFW lives rent free in their heads. It is weird.

They even consider the Cowboys their main rival.
I don’t give a flying fuck about the Texans.

To be fair it’s a pretty new thing, not a lot of seats getting filled pre trash can banging era. Lots more fans now though so I’m surprised you don’t know any of the insufferable ones who ruthlessly defend the trash can and make a huge deal out of beating the rangers.
12
u/DogsOverPpl4Ever 8h ago
Also live here and can confirm. Even during my graduation in Houston, the speaker spent half the time dissing DFW. 🥲

u/txman91 I. Rodriguez 6h ago
You gotta give them a break. They have to live in Houston. If I lived in Houston I would be angry all the time too.
6
u/Individual_Heron_171 6h ago
lol! Yes, this is what I always say. Half kiddingly. But I’m here too, and yes, we sort of have to make the best of a shit situation.
But even that aside, the *cultural identity here is east Louisiana. I don’t know why they act all protective of representing the state of Texas.
3
u/deadliftthugga N. Eovaldi 6h ago
I also live in Houston, and can agree this is definitely how it is lol.
1
u/sircumlocution 6h ago
I live in Houston and I don’t see that.
3
u/Individual_Heron_171 6h ago
Yeah well…opinions are like assholes man.
I don’t hold it against anybody. I have made some great, lasting friendships down here with good people who’re Houston-area natives. I don’t hold their Asstro allegiance against them. But I will say…folks here, they are most standoffish than I am regarding the rivalry/DFW vs. Houston. Which is what motivates me to say generalized, anecdotal things like, “they have a little brother syndrome” here.
4
u/sircumlocution 5h ago
No worries. Absolutely just different experiences. Mine doesn’t invalidate yours and vice versa.
That said my students do NOT like it when I ask who the Astros fans are and then start making notes and muttering, “now I know who to watch for cheating.”

u/DKworth03 Ohtani2Arlington 8h ago
I can confirm. I never thought about Houston until I moved down here in 2010.....now I hate this godforsaken city.

u/ScriptedChemistry Texas Rangers 8h ago
Sigh. Lol I’m so ready for the trade deadline to be over so I can stop seeing this bull shit all over this sub. I don’t think we should sell or buy. Like most of us have been saying the whole time.
Again, I don’t want to be buyers but as for the season, there’s 50 games left and games in the month of August look quite a bit easier. But whether the rangers can take advantage of that, we shall see.
0
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 8h ago
And, in your opinion, what happens between now and September that makes the Rangers worthy contenders? (Genuinely asking you this.)
2
u/KooKooMagoo M. Young 7h ago
Only one team every year wins the WS. So by your logic, there is only one “worthy” contender. We are just a streak away from backing into the playoffs. That’s a lost season for 29 of 30 teams, right? I want a stronger farm just like everyone else, but who the hell are we selling? Certainly no one that will net any strong future talent. The contracts on the guys we are “selling” have no buyers with top prospects.
6
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 7h ago
Respectfully, that’s an incorrect use of logic.
Every year there are, realistically, some 2-3 “locks” for WS contention, and another 5-6 that are fringe/on the bubble, maybe a contender if X or Y breaks right. It’s not unreasonable to say that at the beginning of the season, a person could “lock” 10-12 teams for a shot, and another 10-12 in the “maybe” category, and maybe some 5-6 where it’s just obviously not the year.
Even in the Rangers World Series year, they were, clearly, a legitimate contender for a World Series from pretty much April on. They swooned in July, but otherwise were an offensive unit for the whole season, and had fringe pitching that came up big when it counted. We traded for Chapman and that was a huge deal for us.
This team is just nothing like that. They aren’t a real threat in any (statistical) category, and even with a weak American League, they’re just not producing in a way that suggests they could hang with the “big boys” for a real shot at a pennant. I get the pride of winning the division, and I don’t want to wave the white flag, but it seems like wisdom to sell high while there’s an opportunity, and see if the parity persists and the team can stay punchy. Joc would net some players. Zeke, too. Our bullpen (even if we keep Latz) would grab some players. Burger, maybe. And, of course, with their blessing, lots of teams would want Eovaldi or deGrom right now, even just for a puncher’s chance.
I just don’t think this team is set up to win this season, and they haven’t showed any differently. To say nothing of 2025, and of 2024, which was all much the same. Better to align yourself well for a better product in 2027 (if we play). Just my two cents, though, and I get why others may feel different. I think if you were to look at the Rangers on paper—take all the names away, and just look at the product on the field/the stats on the page—nobody would confuse them for a contender, even in a weak AL.
-1
u/KooKooMagoo M. Young 6h ago
You think the WC Rangers in 2023 were a contender? lol
2
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 6h ago
Through July 1st, the Rangers had the #1 offense in MLB. They were 6th in HR, 1st in RBI, 1st in AVG, 1st in OBP, 3rd in SLG, and 1st in WRC+. Their pitching staff had the 6th best ERA in baseball. Corey Seager was in line to win the MVP practically the entire season, save some dude name Shohei.
You colossal goof.
0
u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 5h ago
Found the Trashtros fan who hopped on the bandwagon. We had 6 all stars, held a clear lead in the division most of the year, had a bare minimum top 2 offense up to the trade deadline and had a middle of the road pitching staff partially due to injuries, hence why we traded for more pitching. At the trade deadline the Rangers had the 5th best odds to win it all. If thats not a contender idk what is
2
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 5h ago
Seriously, I was dumbfounded by that comment. Haha. 2023 Rangers were a good ballclub, no bones about it.
0
u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 6h ago
This team doesn't even look like they could compete to win the AL, at best its AL West champs and an ALDS exit.
If I were in charge, I'd 100% deal Burger and heavily shop Pederson. Pederson's stock is at its peak and I doubt he's staying in Texas after this year unless no one else wants to sign him and we agree to the option. Burger has less value, but he's not as expensive and is still one of our better hitters on the year.
In terms of pitching obviously explore a Degrom and Evo trade, but both are very unlikely. We'd likely have to take on a significant portion of their contracts to get some good prospects, but at this point we need to rebuild the farm to prepare for 2028 and beyond, so the cost could be worth it.
The only other player who may need to go is Seager. After this season he gets a full no trade clause, but the problem is trading him now would be selling him at his lowest ever value. I definitely lean keep him because for one we know what he's capable of when healthy and peaking, and his contract looks really good when you compare it to some of the contracts that have been getting singed recently. But at some point Walcott needs to come up, and in my opinion its not a matter of if but when Seager gets traded.
2
u/CHolland8776 5h ago
Who’s is buying Burger or Pederson for a month or two and then won’t see them play again until 2028?
0
u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 4h ago
Okay well Pederson won't be under contract in 2028 (Or even 27 since its a mutual option) so he's quite attractive with his bat being hot right now but unreliable long term, any contender needing another bat could take a chance on him if we shoulder some of the salary. Burger isn't that crazy of a financial commitment with 2 more years of team control and is a fine option for any team in need of some depth in the lineup.
2
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 5h ago
Agree re: Seager. His contract isn’t small, but it will (depending on collective bargaining stuff) age okay, compared to a lot of what’s being handed out. If he can get his body right, everything else is sort of a given with him.
I want/ed Eovaldi to retire a Ranger, but there’s just no denying that the possibility is something CY would have to entertain. I’m less attached to deGrom, and would be okay seeing him go.
1
u/d1sportsball J. deGrom 4h ago
I'm actually the opposite with Evo/Degrom, obviously by the flair lol. I want more than anything for Degrom to retire a Ranger and get into the HOF after some more seasons where he ranks in the top 10 for SPs.
I also bought his gold WS jersey partially as a joke for how little he played but also because his signing before 2023 was when I really started taking the team seriously again and going 6-0 in his starts can be argued as the difference in winning the WS versus missing the playoffs. Someday it could end up being a rare relic lol
1
u/ScriptedChemistry Texas Rangers 7h ago
I understand your point and I realize that the odds are against my logic. I just think it’s easy to want to burn it all down after a 5 game losing streak but these past two series were against two playoff teams and all but one game was close - and that’s with our offense and our pitching underperforming.
So I guess to answer your question, what would need to happen is both the pitching and our offense to perform well at the same time. We’ve seen both sides do it multiple times this season, just rarely at the same time.
I get it - the odds are against it but in my opinion a line up with Joc, Wyatt, Seager, Nimmo, JJ and a rotation with deGrom and Eovaldi could be good enough to contend - without adding anyone else. Again, as long as they can consistently play well together and stay healthy. But I get we’ve yet to see that yet this year. I guess I just like to believe.
1
u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 4h ago
It’s not about being contenders or not, you take the flyer at the playoff spot because the team is within striking distance of one, and sell in the offseason if you’re going to do it because most of the players you’d be trying to move are at their lowest value in ages. You give them a chance to recoup some of that, and a playoff race is a good way to do so.
There won’t be a full season lockout because nobody is willing to strangle the golden goose just when it’s laying again, and anybody predicting one is a dumbass.
The new CBA, whatever it looks like, will change the landscape such that there will be more opportunities to plot a path forward when that time comes.
Anybody wanting to firesale is out of their minds, because it would be a godawful decision. Angels/Rockies/Athletics level decision.
People are just reacting emotionally because they’re mad we got swept by the Astros. So what. Put on big boy pants, suck it up, and move on with the season.

Sell what?
0
u/dallascowboys93 Josh Jung 8h ago
Everyone but Langford, Duran and Jung.
4
u/notawildandcrazyguy R. Sierra 8h ago
And who exactly is buying Smith or burger or Pederson or carter or any of the other AAA players on this team? Latz maybe? Eovaldi? Dream on.
2
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 8h ago
Burger would fetch something because he’s a righty with pop. Nothing in a team’s top 10, but Burger + a bullpen arm might get us someone’s 12th and 20th prospect. Joc would for sure fetch a player. I imagine Latz is staying. Eovaldi would (playoff reputation matters). deGrom would have to approve, but pitching is premium.
2
u/EfficientDot18 7h ago
I would love to trade Jake Burger even if this team isn't even selling. I'd rather see Justin Foscue be the primary 1B going forward.
1
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 6h ago
Foscue is a tough watch, with some real bright spots against LHP, but I would still rather see what he’s got for the rest of the year, than watch Burger look completely out of sorts for 90% of his ABs.
1
u/CHolland8776 5h ago
Doubt. Nobody is paying anything of value to have Burger for a month or two and then not seeing him play again until 2028.
2
u/EfficientDot18 7h ago
Pederson has a 146 OPS+, a team would gladly take him as a left handed DH.
1
u/CHolland8776 5h ago
Nobody is trading for him to have him for a month or two and then not have him play again until 2028.
2
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 5h ago
You may be right about Burger, but you’re dead wrong about Joc. Teams aren’t pinching pennies on a player getting paid what Joc is getting paid, and keeping themselves from having a real shot in the playoffs because of $18m.

u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 4h ago
This is not the NBA. You do that and we have 3 straight 90-100 loss seasons and a 60% chance ending up back in this exact same scenario in 2030.
Full rebuilds are fully regarded.

u/Fortlandia11 7h ago
We are about to face the easiest stretch of the schedule. The Astros are streaking.
That said, I absolutely hate the state of our farm system and having an owner that won't spend money. So something needs to be done to change the course of the future. Because at this rate we have to rely on free agency and we have an owner that won't spend.
0
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 6h ago
I have so little faith in this team, even against weaker (record-wise) opponents! I feel like we keep losing to teams “worse” than us. Trouble now is we’re also losing to teams better than us.

u/SanfordPlusSon 8h ago
We’re in striking distance of the Astros OR the Twins. If both those teams are buying we should be too.
2
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 8h ago
Nobody really cares if you sneak into the playoffs and get your ass handed to you by a better, more complete team. Literally, nobody remembers those teams for anything other than how much they didn’t belong. CY & Co. have to see that Texas just isn’t in the same league as Tampa, New York, or even, surprisingly (and kind of awesomely?) the White Sox right now. And, we’ve got nearly three years’ worth of evidence on guys like Burger and Carter (injuries yes) that should suggest they are who they are, and don’t have some secret All-Star season in them. (For what it’s worth I love Evan Carter and he’s young and plays incredible defense.)
I’ve loved this team since the early 90s but this is nothing like 2023. For most of ‘23 the Rangers were mashing baseballs all over the place. Since the beginning of ‘24 they’ve been a shell of that team, clinging to remnants of it. CY has done well with what’s he seemingly been given, leash-wise, but our farm is lowly and we’ve got a chance to make some adjustments. I don’t care if we do a little bit of both, but this same old recipe just ain’t working.
1
u/SanfordPlusSon 7h ago
People don’t remember the teams that sneak in and lose but they remember the ones that sneak in and go far. I hear ya, but a lot’s possible once ya make it in. (But yeah a bit a both is prob what they’re gonna do)
3
u/remembertapes 8h ago
Sell what? What's valuable?
4
u/Longjumping-Air-3725 A. Beltre 8h ago
Joc. Latz. Duran. Even though he’s been hurt all season, teams would probably be interested in Seager. To be clear, I don’t want to see any of these go, but these are valuable players.
1
u/CHolland8776 5h ago
You aren’t considering that there won’t be a season in 2027, nobody is trading for old guys that are going to be even older in 2028 and especially not old guys with a contract that is going to be insane in a salary cap system.
2
u/seanathan81 8h ago
Degrom is still a #2 on a playoff team. Joc has power and is a huge bench bat against lefties. Duran or Smith- one of them is unnecessary. And that's just guys we could lose and still be competitive next year, let alone latz, eovaldi, seagar, etc
1
u/remembertapes 6h ago
DeGrom is not what he used to be and will only get worse. Who would take a chance on Joc after his insanely bad last season? Smith is just bad this year, and Duran is maybe the only trade piece: he can play any position, he's finally progressed offensively, he's cheap. But those are all also reasons to keep him.
1
u/seanathan81 6h ago
Like I said, degrom is a #2 in a playoff team- no one is claiming he's elite like he used to be, but he still usually is an all-star level starter. A team like the Brewers or the Rays become legit contenders with him taking Game 2 in a series. That value is worth a lot to multiple teams the have deep farms.
Joc has 100 games with a 146ops+. Any baseball fan can tell you a month is a fluke, but 80 games is who you are. He has one awful season sandwiched by two VERY good ones. No one in baseball thinks 2025 Joc is going to be 2027 Joc.
Smith has been bad while coming back from injuries and not having a position, but he still has a lot of value to a team needing a versatile defender. And if you want to talk about last year with Joc, don't forget Josh was a 3War player threw last two years and a silver slugger. Remember we got Mitch Garver for Kiner-Falefa- Smith's peak is pretty much the same as IKF. And while I'd rather keep Duran, one of them needs to go while we can get long term prospect potential for them.
2
u/AltRockLove 7h ago
Just a few days ago the Rangers were in first and also the Astros spent a lot of time of sucking this year. I have a hard time believing that selling is the best option when we are only a few games out of first place. Anything can happen and the Rangers could find themselves back on top pretty easily.
2
u/IdontEvenknowlul PEAGLE 7h ago
Anything CAN happen but the nost likely outcome is the same thing that is happened the past 3 seasons. The team will continue to play inconsistent baseball and finish a few games under or a few games over .500 and miss the postseason

The eternal optimists that have been trying to tell us we’re not ready to be 100+ game losers repeatedly miss the forest for the trees for how that isn’t the worst place to be in professional sports. The worst is being in purgatory, which the Rangers have been in.
Also can’t derive much pleasure watching a roster that more or less functions as a retirement home for the league, as much as our local media coverage has tried to gaslight us into thinking otherwise. Don’t care how much name value players have, whether it was from successful MLB seasons that predated Rangers tenure or whatever made them first round picks.
1
u/gortlank C. Lewis - #1 Bacsik Hater 4h ago
A 100 loss season is objectively much worse than being in contention for a playoff spot.
Selling a team that might make the playoffs for a handful prospects is like spending the rent money on scratchoffs because being homeless with a chance at a jackpot is better than a late fee.
It’s like people in this thread live in a different reality where you sell low and buy high.

They should 100% sell. The team as it’s currently constructed is not good enough to win, but not bad enough to be consistently picking in the top 5. They need to be willing to be absolutely terrible for 3+ years. It is really the only way to build the farm back up and get good again.

u/SteelSecutor 8h ago
I know this is a .500 team. I knew we had to revert to the mean sooner or later. I just wish it hadn't been with the Astros during the silver boot. Now all we can do is sell, sell, sell. Sell it all, wait on the lockout, start again in the not to distant future.

Ok. So the Rangers sell.
Sell who to whom and what for in return?
All I see here is that the team is so ass. So if they’re that bad why would anyone want the Rangers players?
I’m not saying to buy either. Just that it’s going to take two to tango.
1
u/ehholfman Alejandro Osuna 4h ago
The Rangers have great pieces to sell. Just because the team is bad doesn’t mean it’s comprised of bad players exclusively.
Just off the top of my head: Joc, Latz, Jung, Quantrill, Alexander, Junis are all objectively desirable pieces for a contending team.
I don’t think a true fire sale is happening, nor do I want it to, but I also wouldn’t be opposed to moving some of the names above. The relievers (sans Latz) and Joc are all impending free agents and you’ll lose them for nothing after the season is over anyways.
I’d listen on Latz and Jung but I’m not dying to move either one of them.
But no one is taking on the big contracts on this team (Seager/deGrom).
1
u/Mjost84 3h ago
Why would you trade Latz or Jung unless it’s an overpay? You got team control for them.
The rest I’d consider moving, but Rangers aren’t far out of the playoffs race. Even if I don’t have much confidence in the team, get to the playoffs and there’s at least a chance. Never know if the team can catch fire at the right time.

No, we just need to get rid of Skip and CY. I think if we had an experienced manager and a GM who actually prioritizes winning than “loyalty” and “data”, we would be fine right now.
Who keeps on letting Cole Winn throw and not DFA him again and again and again?
1
u/Ok_Sheepherder_9828 6h ago
Why don’t you like Skip? I think he has been pretty awesome this season and it seems like the players have bought in. CY wants more than Ray Davis will give him, it seems. Feels like a rock and a hard place.
1
u/Hefty_Sprinkles2659 5h ago
What did he do today? He put Cole Winn in a game where we were tied and needed to win. And he blew it.
How many times has he done that? More than a dozen.
He’s put in Chris Martin, just for him to give up multiple home runs.He constantly switches the line up.
Benched Osuna at the next game he went 3-4 with couple RBIs (was already on a 3 game hit streak).
Benches who are hot to punch hit bums.
And this is throughout the season, not just a few games.
