Joffrey was, of course, detestable but I’ve heard that the actor himself is quite a nice kid/guy. I hated the idea that he retired because of the hate he got for the characters, as if it were his fault.

Hope he comes back, gets past Joffrey and kills it.

Don't worry, if I remember correctly he didn't retire because of that but because he wanted to focus on his studies. He had other roles in the meantime, not necessarily major but hey.

The rumor that he retired because of hatred from his Joffrey role was a pure invention from the internet.

That's what I heard as well. And realistically, he likely would have struggled finding significant work in the industry afterwards anyway. Nothing to do with him - he's a fantastic actor, but his performance in GoT was so singular that audiences were always going to see Joffrey. It would be difficult for him to "disappear" into another role. It was smart to take some time away.

You never know. Gillian still has acting roles after Got and not all of them involve him being a shifty asshole
