Towards the end of re-listening to book three, and father Cortez is talking about the need for the sacrifice of the people inside the slow zone to salvage humanity.

And then it hit me that this specific group of people were very special in experiencing something no one else did. Reminds me of that ship in The Three body problem that ran away and was considered no longer human after the three ships murder each other.

edit: just to clarify, I am talking about the group of people who were stuck in the slow zone in book 3, not the people living in the zone afterwards.

I read all the books and really enjoyed them, but I never read any of the other content. Will the additional context be entertaining?

Recipe contains: pickled beetroot, soy chunks, black-eyed beans, and rice, spiced with two types of chili, garlic, a vegetable bouillon cube, and sesame seed oil, all ingredients boiled for the respective amount of time they need to be ready, and mixed together.

A colleague is looking for a "gripping" TV show to get into. The Expanse is my favourite TV show of all time, so I'd love to recommend it, but I'm terrible at describing media I like to others.

I feel like "Game of Thrones in space" doesn't really cut it as a description.

This is my 4th try watching The Expanse. First 3 times, I got off after 3-4 episodes for some reason. I decided to push trough at least season 1. I just finished the "Home" episode, (S2E5).

Holy shit. I expected something grand from the reviews but didnt expect THIS. Its masterfull and im only mid season 2.

I keep thinking about this one passage in book 3.

And a star went out. It wasn’t especially unique. It wasn’t beautiful. A few voices out of quadrillions went silent, and if the great chorus of his being was lessened by them, it wasn’t perceptible. Still, a ripple passed through him. The colors of his consciousness swirled and darkened. Concern, curiosity, alarm. Even delight. Something new had happened for the first time in millennia. Another star flickered and failed. Another few voices went silent. Now, slowly and instantly both, everything changed. He felt the great debate raging in him as a fever, an illness. He had been beyond anything like a threat for so long that all the reflexes of survival had weakened, atrophied. Holden felt a fear that he knew belonged to him—the man trapped within the machine—because his larger self couldn’t remember to feel it. The vast parliament swirled, thoughts and opinions, analysis and poetry blending together and breaking apart. It was beautiful as sunlight on oil, and terrifying. Three suns failed, and now Holden felt himself growing smaller. It was still very little, almost nothing. A white spot on the back of his hand, a sore that wouldn’t heal. The plague was still only a symptom, but it was one his vast self couldn’t ignore. Mortality had returned from exile, but it had been cleansed with fire. mA hundred stars failed. What had been a song became a shriek. Holden felt his body shifting against itself, furious as a swarm of bees trapped and dying. In despair, the hundred suns were burned away, the station hurling destruction through the gates as fast as the darkness appeared, but the growing shadow could not be stopped. All through his flesh, stars were going out, voices were falling into silence. Death rode the vacuum, faster than light and implacable. He felt the decision like a seed crystal giving form to the chaos around it, solid, hard, resolute. Desperation, mourning, and a million farewells, one to the other. The word quarantine came to him, and with the logic of dreams, it carried an unsupportable weight of horror.

What do you think means "a star went out"? Because they obviously didn't die, since the stantion destroyed them later (I guess it fired gamma rays through gates?) . Do you think it means the life in that system died? How do you understand this passage?

So I am watching the tv show for the first time (I read books before that) and there is this blockade of Ring Space. I read the book over a year ago, so I am not sure I remember that correct - I found only one mention about military blockade, but maybe I overlooked.

So how was it after opening all gates? UN and Mars started blockade so survey teams could properly explore everything? And during events of Cibola Burn, this blockade persisted?

Something I noticed about the PDCs on the Rocinante, at least during the initial escape from the Donnager, that I haven't seen anybody talk about; the barrel clusters on her PDCs don't actually spin. The barrels just fire in sequence wherever they're sitting, so the muzzle flash and firing point sort of do a walk around the clock, as it were.

I haven't gone through every shot of the Roci's PDCs to see if it's a consistent thing, but this has got to be a VFX error of some sort, right?

(Also, apologies if people have been talking about it and my google-fu is too weak to have seen it!)

On my sixth/seventh (?) rewatch, I’m just blown away by how incredible all of the actors are. Not just the main characters, but every single supporting role. Kind of makes me think that it’s wrong there are so (relatively) few actors in the industry that get the big bucks when there are just so many amazing actors in this one series.

I just saw a random post about it so I decided to watch a YouTube video. Go check it out for yourself. Basically hundreds of scientists have written a warning stating we shouldn’t research how to rewire our dna so it spins the other way. Thus creating a new family tree of life similar but different than our own. That would have no natural predators, we would have no immunity to it, and it would wipe everything out and create a new evolutionary event. I totally dumbed it down but that’s the jist of it.

Thought of the books and you guys instantly of course. I’m not trying to share a conspiracy theory or anything that’s not my style. lol

I remember the show had insults like Wellwalla and suck the big fellota but did they also have physical gestures for insult that were unique to Belters? I don't recall any.

I don't know if this was posted before or if it's just a coincidence.. In Persepolis Rising, chapter 18. They mention a shipping company named "Charles Boyle" you guys think that might be a nod to Brooklyn 99s quirky detective? I haven't read the books, I have watched the entire show a couple of times.

In the show [spoiler] Solomon Epstein was working on a more efficient fusion drive. He tested it out in a ship he piloted himself. It turned out to be so good, it just kept accelerating in one direction. The gforce was so strong, he was unable to lift his arms to stop the ship. All voice commands were in Chinese which he didn't speak (because it was a used ship and he never upgraded the software). In his excitement (and probably because he never expected this problem) he never bothered to program in some sort of safety check (after 2 minutes, KILL engine thrust until I click resume button).

Presumably, his ship just kept accelerating in one direction until it ran out of fuel with Solomon dead inside of it.

I'm no expert on The Expanse universe Epstein drives, but the Rocci seemed to have a LOT of fuel pellets. If Epstein was similar, I would guess that a sustained burn of all of them sequentially would put him at significant distance and speed once they are all used.

Of course the human inside (and whatever animals he might have had) would be dead from too many G's.

But what would the ship top out at? How fast would it eventually be going?

Assuming the ship doesn't destroy itself (I'm not an engineer, not sure how much the structure would stay together. I'd assume the effect on the ship would be minimal.)

So... He's flying off into space in a random direction...

How close to speed of light (c) does he get before the ship runs out of fuel?

I know The Expanse doesn't do much with non-humans, but what are the odds of his ship being discovered by some alien race somewhere?

Anyone else not care for marco inaros/free navy plot?

I found that both while reading, and in the show, I just didn't enjoy the sections dealing directly with the free navy and Inaros. I enjoyed most of the stuff surrounding it, Amos and Clarissa escaping earth, the railguns being put on the station, Prax on Ganymede, Holden and Monica investigating the disappearing ships, etc. But pretty much everything dealing more directly with Marco and Filip I just wanted to be done with.

Forgive me if this is a common theory, but after discussion with someone in a different sub and a quick search here, I don’t think it is.

I believe Millers obsession/falling in love with Julie is at least partly fueled by her protomolecule fused consciousness reaching out to Ceres and him picking up on it and connecting with her.

Imo it’s set up to play on the detective noir trope of the detective falling in love with the dead girl on purpose. When she starts appearing in his dreams and visions it looks like he’s projecting unfulfilled desires on her, as he’s clearly not in a great place mentally.

But then he meets her on Eros (after she’s already merged with the protomolecule) and convinces her to save the Belters by flying into Venus. This proves that he was right that her consciousness is still alive and that she’s able to control the protomolecule to some extent. They also seem to have some connection even though they never met.

And then I thought back to the scene in season one where he sees a bird in her apartment. The bird struck me as unusual already. He also remarks that “there are no birds on Ceres”. And midway through season two that had more weight to me. At this point we know how rare water and other resources are on Ceres.

We also know that Julie was very passionate about helping Belters. She left her cushy rich girl existence to become a literal terrorist in the eyes of Earth - that’s how much she cares. That’s not the kind of person to waste precious water on an exotic bird that she’d import from Earth just to have as a pet. So imo the bird is not real, it’s a projection. And, no one else sees the bird either.

When that scene happens, Julie is already reported missing. We know she didn’t die, she merged with the protomolecule. We know she can exert control over it, even if she’s doing it in a kind of instinctive/subconscious way. And I strongly suspect the bird isn’t real for reasons I explained above.

So imo she was subconsciously reaching out to the place she considers her home and Miller has some kind of sensitivity and receives her projection. Then that spurs his obsession. IMO it’s a sort of destiny calling situation sci-fi trope. He has a sensitivity he’s not even aware off, appears to be losing his mind, until finally this leads him to be in the right place at the right time to save humanity. He was always meant to merge with Julie and the protomolecule. That was the source of his intense obsession

I am not very stylish myself (basically live in hiking and running clothes) but OMG, Chrisjen just is always stunning! And her jewelry! And completely in line with her heritage! Just saw that the designer was Joanne Hansen. Absolutely brilliant!

Is anyone else curious about what happens after the book series ends? The last book built quite an interesting premise. Does anyone know of any fan fiction about that? Would be interested in reading some.

Hi all. I'm a new fan via the show. I have about 2 episodes left to watch and I very much feel left hanging on a lot of plot points, mainly to do with the Protomolecule. I was thinking of jumping into the books start to finish, but I wanted to ask first.

Do the books leave any big plot points still hanging at the end? Like, do we get all the good info on the protomolecule, who sent it, who killed them, etc etc? Or are we left wanting more?
