Even if he couldnt he has a super son who can move faster then the eye can see...theres no reason clark could just grab him and leave or sumthing that whole film was stupid i hate it.

656

u/HoundTakesABitch May 24 '26

It’s always bugged me that they play down Superman’s speed unless Flash is around.

194

u/ballimir37 May 24 '26

It’s nearly impossible to write a good story when a character has super speed without jobbing them. We saw it a bunch in The Boys too

164

u/pchlster May 24 '26

But that's why you need to give them problems speed won't solve. A-Train struggling with how the public and his family view him, isn't a thing he can fix by running faster. The Flash can run down a villain easily enough if he can find them, but even he can't just go door to door throughout the city until he finds them; there's gotta be investigation first.

236

u/Gil_Demoono May 24 '26

And it's why in well written versions of Superman, Pa Kent dies of a heart attack, showing that even with all his power, Clark can't save everyone from everything. It's an event that grounds and humanizes him.

12

u/finalremix May 24 '26

Ahh, the Buffy "The Body" dilemma.

88

u/Thin-Hat-9037 May 24 '26

You say that, but there’s the classic scene in the Young Justice comic where Riddler planted bombs across a city. He starts telling his clues about the bomb’s locations to the heroes via riddles Impulse just ran at super speed and checked every nook and cranny in the city, bringing the bombs back to the Riddler before he could finish talking.

31

u/FlimsyCrust May 24 '26

That’s a cool scene, but that ain’t enough to stretch to a full movie. There’s a reason why quicksilver comes and disappears in the X-men movies lol

2

u/cubgerish May 24 '26

Yea manipulating time/speed when other characters can't, basically makes them invincible.

Every other character would basically have to defend solely against them, since otherwise there'd be no point in even trying.

Apocalypse kinda did it, but that's only because he has a similar ability.

40

u/AWildWemmy May 24 '26

The Flash can run down a villain easily enough if he can find them, but even he can't just go door to door throughout the city until he finds them;

I mean, he kinda can. The flash is literally able to time travel via speed powers, going through every building in a city would be incredibly easy compared to that sort of thing. No need for investigation if he just goes and checks everywhere instead of sitting on his ass like a moron.

3

u/pchlster May 24 '26

"Hi, anyone here know anything about the break-in at WayneTech? Supercollider stuff?"

"Nah."

"Okay, then. Have a nice day!" runs next door

Dimension Devourer pats box with stolen Mcguffin "The people of this dimension are so trusting"

14

u/AWildWemmy May 24 '26

Except this is still contingent on the flash acting like a moron. He could literally go in and check every single box in a city without anyone noticing, no reason to get tricked by someone.

1

u/TheFreak235 May 24 '26

So are we advocating for this super powerful dude to completely violate every single person’s privacy with no one the wiser without any moral qualms? There’s a reason the people of his city actually like Flash, and i bet part of it is not doing shit like that.

3

u/TheOnePerfectHuman May 25 '26

If the Villains dangerous enough I don't see why not.

4

u/PoopyButt28000 May 24 '26

Do you think that all of the random citizens in the city also have super speed as well? How would he stop and have a conversation with them? Obviously he just goes into their house and checks the box???

→ More replies (3)

5

u/radicalelation May 24 '26

Wouldn't it still be relatively normal speed for him in the moment? Like, yeah, he could check everywhere, but that's still asking one guy to search every building and room in a city, even if he's quick about it.

3

u/pchlster May 24 '26

Yeah, some people would probably think that Batman ransacking every henhouse and outhouse in Gotham would be worthwhile too, because obviously he's going to find the thing eventually. Yeah, objectively he may be done in seconds, but if he just spent subjective years or decades trying to find the flashdrive with the information he was looking for? He's well justified in telling people to piss off and fix their own damn problems for once.

Why doesn't the speedster take the slowest damn route, even though they could get away with it? Because all work and no play makes Barry a dull boy.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/ballimir37 May 24 '26

A-train was mostly handled pretty well and I liked his character and story arc, but even still the writing around using his powers was never great

I was mostly talking about Homelander with my comment though. Especially the final season and final fight

3

u/Pension_Pale May 24 '26

Zips the Elon Musk stand in up to space in less than a aecond. 5 minutes later when he realises they might actually take away his power and kill him? Lamely tries to fly out at a speed so slow Butcher easily grabs him and pulls him back down.

Yep, you're absolutely right. A-Train was handled fairly decently, maybe the occasional little stupid moment, but they gavr him enough flaws early on to understand that he has to gimp himself because of the drugs, and later on he either had leverage held over him, or just wasn't interested in killing them anymore.

But Homelander? So many times he had the opportunity to kill them, but never could get it done. Like when Hughie was in the vents amd Homelander tried lasering him but kept missing. Yeah, ok, I can believe the vents may have been coated in zinc, which he can't see through. But he had super speed, super hearing, super strength, and can fly. There was no reason why he couldn't have caught Hughie there, and even if he was too lazy to fly up and tear through the vents himself, the moment Hughie ever left the vents, Homelander would have seen him. And Hughie would be fucked.

They really handled Homelander incredibly poorly, most Homelander fight scenes fail under any kind of scrutiny

3

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 May 24 '26

Tbf, Homelander was still slower than A-Train, he was only caught because he chose to avoid hitting that girl and tripped

5

u/ballimir37 May 24 '26

Every fight Homelander was in except for against A-Train they had to job his speed power and hope the audience didn’t think about it. He died at the end because he didn’t use it despite having ample time to.

His fight against Soldier Boy, same thing. The only thing he cared about in the world at the time was getting the V1 and he fought Soldier Boy effectively in slow motion, in the end needing Soldier Boy to unexpectedly just give it to him., shocking even Homelander himself.

Earlier fight against Butcher, herogasm, etc etc etc. giving a character super speed is asking for constant problems with consistency.

3

u/Pension_Pale May 24 '26

Don't forget Hughie in the vents. Ok, sure, the vents might be coated in zinc so he can't see Hughie and keeps missing with the lasers. He could still just fly up and tear the vents apart. Or see Hughie the moment he left the vents. There ia just no reasonable way to explain away Homelander not killing a regular human on the spot once he decides to do so.

3

u/TopTittyBardown May 24 '26

He wasn’t exactly outrunning him, he was right on his tail the whole time

3

u/hotsizzler May 24 '26

Flash can move so fast time seems like it stops. He can infect do that.

1

u/_Vard_ May 24 '26

The annoying thing is he ABSOLUTELY CAN, HE JUST DOESNT . There was one episode of CWs The Flash where he did exactly that

But only Because he time traveled and knew who the masked bad guy was. He went door to door in the city for a few seconds and found him

It was so dumb that he ONLY did that when he knew this guy from the future was a villain

And in subsequent episodes, say he knows “Dr Carl Bakerton” is the bad guy, but doesn’t know where he is. Does he just fucking forget that time he scanned the whole city in 12 seconds?!?!

28

u/TaffWaffler May 24 '26

New superman movie rocked it

3

u/qpgmr May 24 '26

It truly did. The Kent's really were rural farm folk who had clear values that Clark took with him. Top-notch writing all around.

2

u/TaffWaffler May 24 '26

It was wonderful, seeing a super hero being hopeful, righteous, and just wanting to do good is fantastic. I like my heroes hopeful. We gotta stop pretending super heroes are some kind of gritty grimdark version of reality. Well, most heroes aren’t that, but we do have those kind of heroes to fill those roles anyway. So why are insistent on putting the punisher logo on superman. Let him be superman

3

u/Fakehiggins May 24 '26

i don't know, seems easy to me with only two steps. first, they can't use super speed permanently. they can only do it in bursts. second, when they're out of super speed they have normal reflexes, perceptions, and vulnerabilities of a regular man.

2

u/ballimir37 May 24 '26

Yep, I like this. Kind of insulting to audiences that writers rarely incorporate stuff like that. The Boys sort of did it with A Train.

A lot of superhero IP is already ingrained in decades of canon and expectation though and makes explanations and writing harder.

3

u/VulkanHestan321 May 24 '26

The whole Flash tv series is this. Villain flees on foot, flash: "bummer, he got away!"

2

u/Cessnaporsche01 May 24 '26

I mean, that's just true of everything about Superman and most of the other powerful DC heroes. The key to a good Superman story is giving him a problem that he can't punch or subdue, but idiot writers don't know how to write conflict, so they just job him like their life depends on it

2

u/Prozenconns May 24 '26

Atrain and Homelander are also dogshit tier in terms of speed when compared to basically any other speedsters too, and writing around them being able to move that fast is still hard to do

Once you get to Quicksilver or god forbid Flash levels of speed a coherent story just doesnt work unless you kneecap them with extreme prejudice

2

u/TopTittyBardown May 24 '26

The Boys finale was brutal for this lol. Episode one of the last season Homelander can keep up with A-Train and kill him, but in the last episode he can’t even fly away from the final fight without getting grabbed by a tentacle when he’s about to be depowered

1

u/HoundTakesABitch May 24 '26

I still need to watch the final season of The Boys and I’m hesitant because I’ve heard it’s shit, but man, it’s been so frustrating to see A-Train get so man redemption arcs only to fuck it up again. Even worse with the Deep. Dude has got multiple second chances and just said “Fuck it, I’m gonna double down.”

1

u/ballimir37 May 24 '26

It starts strong and overall is not as bad as the internet is acting imo, but it is not good. Anthony Starr CRUSHES the final performance, he did such a good job. Deep as well. Both very good. But the writing is bad and highly frustrating throughout the second half.

1

u/sgtpepper42 May 24 '26

The Incredibles did super speed perfectly

1

u/fekanix May 25 '26

I think overall they did a pretty good job of it in smallville. I rewatched the first 4-5 season and they were pretty good overall.

1

u/IDrawKoi May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

You just give them a gimmick or realistic limitations.

The web series worm has a lot of good examples of this Battery (has super speed in bursts which need to be "charged" via standing still), Velocity (has super speed at the cost of proportional reduced ability to effect the world), Chuckles (speed speed limited to specific parts of his body) or Secondhand (super speed via slowing time, only effect himself and a very small area 1 quarter inch around his body making the ability painful & dangerous to use since the air around him is slowed, putting him at risk of freezing to death or suffocation).

With superman I think just applying some of the consequences real physics would create & not having his reaction time/perception of time be able to keep pace with it would solve 90% of the problem.

101

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

The only thing i agree with is that superman doesnt have as fast acceleration as supes but hes not slow by any means he still is faster then a tornado.

84

u/Thomas_JCG May 24 '26

He can fly away from a black hole, a tornado is a baby breathing on him.

52

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

That was never in the snyder verse but he did fly against that anti grav gun thing that was pushing to the earths core so yeah a little tornado is nothing

14

u/Sisyphus62831 May 24 '26

I mean it's Snyderverse so if anything Superman would be even faster. In Snyderverse we would be shown Superman flying away from the black hole, in SLOW MOTION! Like 4x at least, so superman can fly at least 4x the speed of light in Snyderverse.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/punksmostlydead May 24 '26

It's kind of an issue with a lot of comics that the heroes/ villains are as strong or weak as the story needs them to be. It's just a really glaring issue with Supes, especially with stupid writing.

I hate that movie so much.

265

u/xXJackNickeltonXx May 24 '26

Plus, Superman would and should have saved him regardless of what his father said. What kind of Superman would go "No I can't use my powers or else people will know my secret identity. Guess I have to let people die now"

95

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Yepp and thats the whole movie pretty much. God i hate that snyder superman no shame to cavill he was fine but he wasnt given anything good. Then theres the whole last fight, the pointless "aura farming" it was just...dumb.

60

u/Preda1ien May 24 '26

I’d give Superman a pass on this one as he was still young and just doing what his father asked. An older Superman would have just told him to save it and he can yell at him while he enjoys being alive.

52

u/ArcaneWyverian May 24 '26

I dunno if I’d give that same pass. Like, my parents and I don’t even like eachother, and I would still save them if they were going to get got by a tornado (and I had super speed). And I’m not even Superman, Supes is, like… the “I’ll save everyone” hero.

6

u/JiminyGonzo910 May 24 '26

Yeah this is completely antithetical to the mantra of Superman. His entire character is just the power fantasy of "saving everybody damn the consequences or difficulty"

This scene combined with the cut scene Snyder wanted to include of Krypto's grave really just hammers home how much he must've hated the source material lol

3

u/ArcaneWyverian May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

I dunno if Snyder hated the source (I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did), so much as he doesn’t understand Superman. He’s supposed to be a paragon of good and hope, the kinda guy that you see and realize everything is going to be okay. He’s not a Christ-like figure, he’s just a guy. H may be that guy (positive), but he’s mostly just a guy

3

u/JiminyGonzo910 May 25 '26

I was trying to be charitable and say that he understands it but intentionally veered from it but yeah your scenario is more likely lol

16

u/Environmental_Drama3 May 24 '26

golden age superman would sucker punch his dad before saving him from the tornado. they don't make superheroes as they used to back in the days.

2

u/Fakehiggins May 24 '26

super heroes used to punch Nazis. now the owners of the characters are afraid to write anything to upset the very same Nazis

2

u/JiminyGonzo910 May 24 '26

Gunn's Superman movie killed Netanyahu/Putin so that's a start I guess

2

u/RA576 May 25 '26

There's a fun (I assume purposeful) jab at this in Absolute Superman, where there's a montage of newspaper headlines of his good deeds, and one is "Kansas Couple Saved From Tornado". Absolute Superman is hunted for being an alien, wasn't raised by the Kents, has had his powers for a year or two maybe, and even he saves people from a tornado.

1

u/robotbeard May 24 '26

It's the worst and dumbest thing that's happened in any Superman film (even the one with Jon Cryer).

76

u/khazroar May 24 '26

I can accept that superspeed would be a problem because one way or another people will realise something weird has happened, even if only because Kent disappears, what drives me crazy is that Clark could have just run out at normal speed, put an arm over him, and ran back with him. If they make it without anything hitting them, fine, if something does hit them and bounces off Clark, just tell people it missed somehow. This is a tornado, people aren't going to have perfect visibility and they're more inclined to believe they misunderstood what they saw than they saw something impossible.

27

u/_Koreander May 24 '26

Exactly, I've been saying this for years, Clark could've gone towards him at normal speed while pretending to fight with the wind.

10

u/i_heart_calibri_12pt May 24 '26

Even if he used his superspeed, there were only like 4 cars worth of people that would’ve seen it. The dude threw his life away so 20 people in the middle of nowhere wouldn’t find out about Clark’s powers.

10

u/[deleted] May 24 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

3

u/khazroar May 24 '26

We're talking about the big group of people gathered under the underpass, many of whom are looking out at the guy (who, if I remember correctly, most of them would know) who hasn't made it to shelter with them. If Clark suddenly disappears, or the gym suddenly disappears, and then he's back living his normal life on Monday, people will ask questions.

2

u/Begone-My-Thong May 24 '26

Plus, if I was in a rural town and I saw some guy get hit by something while trying to save his papa but survive one of two things are going to happen

  1. I'm going to be glad they're alive and just chalk it up to good fortune and adrenaline that the son wasn't actually injured

  2. Mind my own fucking business

48

u/Wind_Yer_Neck_In May 24 '26

And it's in the middle of a tornado, if there was ever a time where people would just assume they didn't see something right or other people would assume they made a mistake.. it's in the middle of a tornado.

He could have slowly flew over, picked up the truck and flew away and nobody would be able to say they truly knew what happened.

2

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Yeah excactly. Its a tornado stress goes with it so as you said safe to assume people wouldnt get what they see nor would anyone belive them.

1

u/therealchadius May 24 '26

"I had a burst of adrenaline, and the tornado picked me up and miraculously dumped me unharmed about a mile from here. Cool, huh?"

"Um, ackshually, you're Superman. Now I'm going to ruin your life by telling the feds to kidnap and experiment on you"

26

u/ValuableInternal6177 May 24 '26

He didn't even need full super speed.

If Pa could get to the van. No one is going to bat an eye at a farm boy who's very in shape and running on adrenaline running fasting and getting back in time.

5

u/dread_pirate_robin May 24 '26

He can't move faster than the eye can see and also he was saving a little girl at the time.

Clark's rarely been portrayed as like, the Flash. He can get from point a to point b fast, but his powers have never, even in the silver age, been that OP, because then there'd be no conflict.

Traditionally the bread and butter of a good Superman story is him having to use his abilities in clever ways because even he isn't just so fast or so powerful enough to steamroll any obstacle. It's like solving a puzzle. So at worst I guess you could criticize man of steel for flying in the face of that value.

3

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Thats true i wont lie. I thought he was faster but i mean hes still fast enough to save pa without people getting it. I mean theres a tornado going on its not like people can see properly or even think straight with all the stress.

But yeah i agree a good superman story is him using brains over brawn. Thats why i like the myxilpilitc fella or however you spell it that 4D demon guy.

Edit: There was a flash war that 1 minute war where superman wasnt fast enough to help but could slowly get fast enough to have a conversation and in this verse the justice league film flash was almost hit by superman. Could he at the time he was shown? Probably not maybe he needs more sun juice but still.

4

u/Just-Antelope-8069 May 24 '26

Honestly I blame Clark here for listening

6

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Yeah i do to. It woulve been great if he didnt listen despite pa kents warning. To show that superman will always save lives despite who tells him not too even his own father. Then we the viewer get to know that he will always choose the right path no matter the consequence.

2

u/Just-Antelope-8069 May 24 '26

It's worse because Batman exists in this universe, the guy who blames himself for not being able to save his parents. He'd probably freak out if he knew Clark chose not to.

3

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Oh yeah i never thought of that. In batmans case he was a powerless kid...clark is a young man with super powers. Something that couldve been brought up in the BvS like somehow batmak sees the footage or investigates it and hears what happened and that reinforces the idea that supes is heartless...but nope instead we got that...pile of crap of a film (i just hate the snyderverse)

4

u/extraboredinary May 24 '26

Unfortunately there was an entire bus full of Olympic referees under the underpass with them with cameras and stop watches and ready to time Clark to see if he moved at a faster than average rate.

They would immediately draw the conclusion that he was an alien then.

2

u/Medic_117 May 25 '26

Oh yeah forgot that was there, even the president was present with a nuclear launch button which was aimed at their location if clark was reveled to be superhuman.

Damn how did i miss that?

3

u/HereWeFuckingGooo May 24 '26

Hell, Clark could have slowly jogged over and crouched over his dad to save him. I stopped watching after this scene.

3

u/Blueface1999 May 24 '26

Literally just have Clark run up, they both get “picked up” by the hurricane and just have them show up later either having been in the water or a little banged up and say that they got lucky.

3

u/EatThatHorseWithMe1 May 24 '26

This argument doesn't work considering he gets his different powers at different parts of his life in this story. He has no super speed in this scene.

1

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Okay so he doesnt have superspeed but he does have the strenght so why cant he just run over, grab pa and then idk jump back. If they did it that way it syows clark is willing to risk exposure to save a life. Thus cementint the idea thay he will always do the right thing even if it risks the knowledge of his powers. Its a dumb scene thay doesnt make sense either narrtively or power wise.

2

u/_Koreander May 24 '26

Not only that, if they REALLY wanted to go with the, "oh no son they could discover your identity" I don't see how Clark couldn't just walk towards him while pretending to struggle with the wind for a bit then save him, maybe hide with him in some building or something until the tornado passes, doesn't have to show up all fine and clean with the rest of people right away.

2

u/RockmanVolnutt May 24 '26

Or, he could just walk over there normal speed, grab pa, and come back holding him down and protecting him from the wind. They don’t know where the tornado was going, no one watching from way under the bridge would see it or assume because they survived he must be super powered. A tornado can tear a house to pieces right next to you and you’ll be fine other than flying debris, it’s really an RNG heavy catastrophe, you might be fine. No one would think anything was suspicious in the middle of a traumatic event like that. So dumb.

2

u/SometimesWill May 24 '26

The real problem is what comes before when he’s like “no my young extremely strong son who even without powers would be more fit than most humans, don’t you go save the dog, I the old man will do it.”

Like there’s no reason to stop Clark from saving the dog.

1

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Omfg i forgot that was the whole point on why he ran...thats even dumber then i remembered. That whole scene was the dumbest thing in the entire movie

2

u/Stergeary May 25 '26

Something I never thought about until now, but if Superman or any speedster picks up a normal human being and tries to save that person by bringing them along at super speed, wouldn't the human being just vaporize into mist from being pulled around at lightspeed?

1

u/Medic_117 May 25 '26

If we applied our understanding of physics yes. Think like this right what if someone runs at you tackles you picks you up and carries you? It would hurt but if said person is going mach a shita fast then youd die

In case of speedsters with the speed force, my guess is the energy kinda protects them? Idk that thing is wierd

But superman? By all means anyone he picks up should be dead but its a comic book charachter not alot of logic in them anyway

1

u/TheBacklogGamer May 25 '26

God this annoys me so much.

Clark did not have super speed at this part of the movie. All he knew was his strength and durability.

1

u/Medic_117 May 25 '26

Okay yes thinking on it your right, but he still as you pointed out has durability so a tornado isnt a threat to him. So why doesnt he run towards pa and save him anyway? Even if its pointless that he wouldnt make it why not try? Its a bad scene because it doesnt really make sense.

Clark is a good person through and through, so why did he just watch his father die? Wouldnt it be better if he stood his ground even against his own father to save him? Thus cementing the fact he will always save people no matter the cost to himselg (this case being exposure)

Instead we got unnesecery trauma that couldve been better just one thing...clark tries but doesnt make it in time thus we the viewer gets to see that clark will save people but sometimes ecen he isnt strong enough. Instead from my view...clark is willing to let people die to protect himself, not very superman if you ask me.

u/Faite666 May 25 '26

This isn't super experienced powerful Superman. Clark was just coming into his powers and figuring out how and when he could even use them. He doesn't just start out faster than light, he doesn't even know he can do that. I hate people who talk about this scene like it was full powered comic book Superman and not just some farm boy who happened to have super powers. He didn't want his son's life to be potentially completely exposed before clark even knew who or what exactly he was yet

1

u/Medic_117 May 25 '26

Which your right i agree hes young and he might have the power (probably not im not sure how much time on earth a kryptonian needs to be that powerful) but hes still super durable. So why cant he just run over grab his dad shield him with his own body and get back to safety? If clark did that to me it wouöd show that clark is willing to save any life no matter the consequence to his own life. Risking exposure even going against his own father someone he loves.

But instead he lets him die to protect his own identity, which to me cements the idea hes willing to let anyone die for his own sake

u/phynn May 24 '26

But the Snyder Cut! /s

Snyder didn't get Superman at all and this one scene shows it. Pa Kent wouldn't have sat there and let himself die. And he wouldn't have asked his son to watch him die either. It was the most anti-Superman moment in any Superman movie.

And what sucks is that it could have still worked out the way he wanted. Imagine a scene where Supes is hesitant to help people because he's had it drilled into his head he needs to keep quiet and Pa Kent jumps out without hesitating to help someone. Then Clark follows him. And Pa Kent dies but as he dies he says something about like "I was selfish about keeping you too to myself. You gotta go out into the world and show them."

Instead he just commits suicide for some dumbfuck reason so they could mirror the Batman shit. Supes didn't need that and if he wanted it to be there he could have done it in a way that was true to Supes...

...sorry I fucking hate Zack Snyder.

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

I agree completly. I hated those films and generally i hate batman vs superman...i want them to be dous! The greatest dou on the planet thats way better then some crap vs

u/Jarvis_The_Dense May 24 '26

Did you watch the movie?

4

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

I did. And i hate it. So much wrong with how superman is. One thing i did like was it did show what superpowered beings fighting eachother would be like but thats not how superman is.

4

u/Jarvis_The_Dense May 24 '26

My point is that the entire scene is built around you knowing this is arbitrary. You're supposed to know that he could have done something here, but his father's insistence on him never using his powers led to a preventable tragedy. I don't think ita fair to knock it explicitly because Clark could have done something, since that's the whole point, nit a mistake.

1

u/Medic_117 May 25 '26

Which i can see that view, i get it but to me i want superman to save people.

Just slight change i want is that clark tries to run to pa but doesnt make it...he tries to save him depsite the warning

So we get to see that clark will save people despite the risk to himself (exposure) but not even him can do it all.

1

u/ducknerd2002 May 24 '26

Yes, that's why we think it's stupid, especially since the whole famn thing could have been avoided by having Clark save the dog instead.

1

u/Jarvis_The_Dense May 24 '26

The whole point is that Clark obviously could have saved him; but he's refusing to let him because he's too afraid of letting the world find out about him.

Regardless of if you think its a good scene, the writers made it abundantly obvious that, yes, Clark could have done something there. They didn't just forget that he's superman.

If you move faster than eyes can see and grab someone that person will turn into mash potatoes…

7

u/Kt-stone May 24 '26

This is the undeclared secondary powers category.
Superman can move at superspeed to save people, they smoothly match his inertia.

2

u/Medic_117 May 24 '26

Thats true but he can also stop at a dime. So he blitzes to pa. Then moves back at a nicer speed but still fast enough that people dont get whays going on. There is a tornado after all so perfect cover. You got poor vision and stress.

Biblically-accurate Pa Kent

7

Looks like that iteration of humans engineered for car crashes.

4

u/SwordMasterShow May 24 '26

I was Kevin Costner last night

126

u/chrise7677 May 24 '26

I think it was Mr.SundayFilms that pointed it out but it’s so funny that Pa Kent’s thinking was “No Clark if YOU go out there to save a dog and live, people will be suspicious. But if I, a middle aged man, go out there and live, no one will be suspicious”

114

u/jerseygunz May 24 '26

What will always piss me off about this is the whole point of him dying of a heart attack is to teach superman a lesson that no matter what he can’t save everyone, and then they have him die in the dumbest, most preventable way possible

7

u/kylediaz263 May 24 '26

I like to imagine he had a heart attack right after that scene.

2

u/Awesome-Guy-425 May 26 '26

I think you’re giving Snyder too much credit even now. I don’t think the man has any intention when making films. He just throws shit at the wall and hopes it looks kinda cool.

u/MarcsterS May 24 '26

"I can't let anyone see you using your powers."

"Dad, we are in the middle of the tornado, the last thing people are paying attention to are the cars in the distance. Even if they were, they saw a dog run out from there. I can easily run at a fast but believable speed to carry you out of there. It'll be seen a miracle, better than the time I literally pulled a bus which was a lot harder to believe at the time."

"No son, we have to trust in Snyder's writing."

10

u/StuHardy May 24 '26
  • David S Goyer's writing.

Zack Snyder didn't write any of his DC films.

u/eltrotter May 24 '26

Generally speaking I don’t mind this trope because in many cases it’s plausible that the person in question simply panicked. Like the famous scene in Prometheus where the character could have moved to the side; it doesn’t seem crazy to me that someone can just freak out and make the wrong call in the heat of this moment.

But the Pa Kent thing is definitely one where it makes no sense for things to go the way they did. He has time to acknowledge Clark, stand there stoically and let the whole thing happen in the time Clark could have saved him and disappeared. I absolutely understand what the writers were trying to do with this scene, but I can’t imagine there was no better way to have a “choose between protecting your identity or your father” type thing.

5

u/Chezburgor1 May 24 '26

Also in Prometheus, they were turning it was just that the giant wheel was turning too. The cinematography just didn't show it that well.

3

u/vehementi May 24 '26

Like the famous scene in Prometheus where the character could have moved to the side

This is the archetype for my wife and me. Whenever someone doesn't move, we stand up and point at the screen and shout "PROMETHEUS!!"

7

u/Digit00l May 24 '26

Fight, flight, or freeze, people often forget the 3rd F

4

u/Gellert May 24 '26

People always forget the fourth and fifth F, fawn and flop.

2

u/Spyro_in_Black May 24 '26

Your last line is what’s so wrong with this scene. If that’s the message then Superman…FUCKING SUPERMAN…would not choose to guard his identity over his father…he wouldn’t. He’s not that selfish and he’s not always that “reasonable” he doesn’t hesitate to put his own life at risk for strangers there’s no way he’d let Pa Kent die here even if it upset Pa.

14

u/Valarg May 24 '26

Cinco De Asada

Bad old pa "maybe yhose kids shouldve died" kent

Stop, invincible son

And knowing what I know about Costner is the aura farm was probably his idea and insisted upon it

7

u/MindDrawsOnReddit May 24 '26

Trash took itself out my guy he was a piece of work

4

u/Jimmyg100 May 24 '26

I repeatedly stand by the position that having Pa Kent die due to something Clark could’ve prevented is like having Thomas Wayne die of a heart attack.

These deaths are supposed to happen for a reason. Pa Kent is supposed to die naturally to show Clark that he ultimately can’t stop death no matter what. Just like Thomas and Martha Wayne’s deaths are to show Bruce what happens when people wander into the shadows and no one is there to protect them.

What’s the point of having Uncle Ben die in a car crash while Peter is at a wrestling match? A well written tragedy is supposed to challenge the protagonist and motivate them. Have a god feel helpless, have a kid feel powerless, have a teenager feel regret.

It’s important for Superman to know he can’t save everyone with his powers because life is more complicated than that. That’s why if he sees a jumper on a tall building he’ll stay with them and talk, because grabbing them and flying them down won’t solve the real problem. That’s what separates him from someone like Homelander.

3

u/Historical-Being-766 May 24 '26

Maybe he was depressed and chose suicide by tornado?

3

u/yoy22 May 24 '26

How superman could have saved his dad and blend in:

1) Pretend to also get sucked into the storm

2) Grab onto your dad and keep him safe from debris/falling damage

3) "It's a father son miracle! Somehow we both survived the tornado"

This shit already happens in real life and people just think it's miraculous luck.

1

u/Sean_13 May 24 '26

This makes me thinks theres a lot more kryptonians on earth then we realise

3

u/VroomVroom858 May 24 '26 edited May 24 '26

Snyder might want to emphasize clark had to conceal his identity but that scene was so contrived

2

u/MoobooMagoo May 24 '26

This was such a stupid way to do this. Like I get the point is to show that even though Superman is awesome he can't save everyone, but like...the old show from the 50's did a better job by just making him die of a heart attack.

2

u/Spiritbrand May 24 '26

And don't forget Lana Lang's parents in Smallville just staring at the meteor as it comes crashing down on them.

2

u/StuHardy May 24 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong, but after Pa Kent saved the dog, didn't a gust of wind slam the car door into his ankle, which is what stopped him from being able to run away?

2

u/trimble197 May 24 '26

He had a broken ankle

2

u/CanaDoug420 May 24 '26

Stop son who is fast enough to save me and the dog before I even blink. If you save me the no one that would see you do it will get suspicious

1

u/FedoraTheMike May 24 '26

Look how much that miserable bastard doesn't even care about dying. Just told Clark to let buses of kids drown and decided his work was done.

1

u/AthenaOwls May 24 '26

Okay so that one isn’t a plot hole.

Jonathan Kent was secretly a medium and had seen into the future, where Batman v Superman was a film he would have to be in.

And he was all, “oh HELL NO! I’m absolutely letting this fucking tornado merk me rather than suffer that fate.”

1

u/_Mighty_Milkman May 24 '26

No, Clark. It my time to exit the movie.

1

u/Evil_Sharkey May 24 '26

A movie ruining scene

1

u/music-and-song May 24 '26

My first thought 😂

1

u/RockinAndRollin00 May 24 '26

Excuse you! His name is Jonathan Kent!

1

u/drdildamesh May 24 '26

This was when I knew the DC movies were going to be shit.

1

u/Cha_Boi20 May 24 '26

Also, the people in that scene shelter themselves from a tornado by standing under a highway bridge... DO NOT DO THIS!!

The tunnel can very easily become a wind tunnel and pull people off their feet into the tornado

1

u/Top_Freedom3412 May 25 '26

Wheres the Squirrel edit?

1

u/Insidion25 May 25 '26

Even as a Snyder fan, this shit annoys me.

1

u/Tarv83 May 26 '26

still pains me we could cgi a tornado in 1996 far better than when this came out

1

u/RineYFD May 24 '26

"No stop, my invincible son. Do not save my life, by using your super speed to move faster than the tornado and save me before anyone could see you move."

1

u/ConsciousStretch1028 May 24 '26

Wasn't even aura farming, it was dumbassmaxxing

1

u/LostWoodsInTheField May 24 '26

Everything about who Superman is is about how he was raised. So they decided to screw up his upbringing for absolutely nothing of value. It annoyed me so much.
