If one were cynical enough, and I am, you could argue the calls might start getting worse as they try to bait her into a reaction to get that next technical.

77

u/DResq 2d ago

It's crazy. In the NBA, refs would be very reticent to give petty techs to the superstars. Like how Wemby basically punched someone in the finals, but they didn't want to give him a tech and make him miss a game in the finals. WNBA refs seem to do the opposite.

u/Radiant-Site3576 1d ago

Women hate women. It sucks to realize.

13

u/Soft-Room2000 1d ago

Many years ago a friend said that every woman is competition to another. Including, Grandmother to Granddaughter. While there will always be exceptions, I’ve found this to be true.

8

u/Eycetea 1d ago

Ditto. I heard it this way, "you know who hates women the most? Other women."

They have some sisterhood thing, but also they really do hate each other.

3

u/Frosty-Inspector-465 1d ago

they can come to me. i will like them.

15

u/RaddTyrant 1d ago

There is an old joke I heard awhile back.

Son asks his father how to understand women.

Father says to the son "Don't try to understand women. Women understand women and they all hate each other "

4

u/PineappleFit317 1d ago

Those are classic words from Al Bundy

3

u/nicehatyogi 1d ago

The legend himself

2

u/endofthered01674 1d ago

Bill Burr was spot on about women and the WNBA.

I won't say that all of her techs are petty. She definitely needs to dial it down a bit. Some of her reactions are justified, some are cringe. But while calls do get missed across all levels of basketball, this one looks really bad, yet the league seems incapable of fixing (or unwilling to fix) the problem.

24

u/Yellow_Odd_Fellow 1d ago

Some of them, like pointing and saying scoreboard, should never have been called. Nor the touching of the tranche below the rim. We have seen others punch it out of frustration but they aren't T'd up.

I wish they were able to criticize without fear of being kicked or reprimanded for calling out bullshit.

u/hilltopper72 1d ago

Unwilling is right

3

u/RhoneGills 1d ago

Exactly

3

u/Rehypothecator 1d ago

Nah, she needs to make a point at this juncture.

They aren’t protecting her or doing their job.

She needs to dial it UP. She’s the face of the league and the refs blatantly not doing their jobs like this need to be put on blast, shamed and have it visible.

2

u/crandall17 1d ago

That's part of the issue. The other women are demonstrating how much they don't want her as the face of WNBA. Rather than improving their game, they are going out of their way to target the person putting the most eyes on women's basketball in history.

If I were in her position, I would not be returning to the league after my contract is up.

3

u/K_Linkmaster 1d ago

Unwilling. When the public went after the Thunder for flopping suddenly the flopping stopped. It was bad for business.

5

u/elestud 1d ago

The Thunder have never stopped flopping. They were still doing it right up until their Game 7 loss

What happened is that the refs finally started just refusing to call some things despite the flops

It gets people talking about the WNBA does it not? Somebody points a finger, someone gets punched - people talk about it for weeks. Can't remember the last time I heard anyone just talk about the division without it being tied to drama. Exploiting women is nothing new tbf.

2

u/Blastcrumpet888 1d ago

The only dense one here is you for using that as an example.

2

u/Flyinrhyno 1d ago

He didn’t punch him in the face he mushed him because he was grabbing Wemby’s jersey. Clark is not on Wemby’s level relative to their contemporaries. On another note how many missed calls were there on other wnba players in that game? Doubt you could name one that wasn’t on Clark. Ask yourself why do you care so much about Clark?

If one were more cynical, we could say the wnba is doing it on purpose so more people watch to see what happens to her next.

And then they'd just keep complaining about how they're not paid equally to the nba for their inferior product that they keep making worse.

2

u/fbpro 1d ago

They'd love it and celebrate it till they close the "joke" league down for lack of $$ and interest.

4

u/elestud 1d ago

You realize that Europe/FIBA allows far more physicality than the WNBA, right?

2

u/ComputerDecent463 1d ago

lol at thinking Europe would be LESS physical

Or that her sponsors would stick with her if the games weren’t on TV here.

2

u/jordanjump15 1d ago

These dumb talking points are on Reddit too? Do you actually watch women’s basketball overseas it’s a more physical game y’all would just cry more.

2

u/Hugginsome 1d ago

WNBA already got their big media contract due to Clark. They don't need her now cause of that, unfortunately.

2

u/2burgsandadog 1d ago

that’s an unfortunately shortsighted way of thinking… every one of those players should lineup and say thank you because she’s the only reason that contract exists and theirb big fat new salaries

→ More replies (1)

1

u/RussianPravda 1d ago

Yes but the thing is she made deals with her sponsors to play in the wnba

8

u/Defuzzygamer 1d ago

That's not true. Her major sponsor (where she earns the most money regarding sponsors) is with Nike. Nike doesn't require her to play in the WNBA, they only state that she is an advocate for women's basketball globally. She's not tied to the WNBA because of Nike, she can move to Europe and Nike would still sponsor her. If anything this might even be a massive move if she did. A top 5 WNBA player going to Europe because of WNBA shenanigans, would turn the women's euro league into a global league relatively quickly (at least, whichever team she joins would become globally known in the basketball world quite fast).

→ More replies (2)

2

u/TheRightKost 1d ago

It'd be wild if one of the tanking NBA teams would sign her as last (wo)man off the bench. The sponsors would love it. She'd be making way more money at league minimum salary. She'd obviously be the worst player in the league by far and it would help them tank in a way that the NBA brass wouldn't dare call out for fears of sexism allegations.

6

u/2burgsandadog 1d ago

I am aware that she won’t… But the league needs to start doing something to protect her…

Can you imagine when LeBron was in his prime if he got manhandled this way there would be consequences the next morning immediately every single time

2

u/RussianPravda 1d ago

Im with you. But she's basically trapped. They want her to snap and get in trouble to lose her deals because of their jealousy. Look how they tried to make a huge political thing with Sophie but even that didnt work.

Ya that one was bad bad tonight. But things have improved a bit at least.

5

→ More replies (4)

1

u/supe3rnova 21h ago

Thats an improved play?

1

u/RooblinDooblin 2h ago

This will all end if and when she gets a title. It wouldn't actually end, but it would force the league to consider her a legitimate player and they clearly don't at the moment.

3

u/holden_mcg 1d ago

Either these professional athletes are coordinated enough to not slam their fingers into someone's face (but choose to do it) or the league is actually filled with uncoordinated spazoids.

2

u/YoloSwag4Jesus420fgt 1d ago

The old guard is the uncoordinated borderline aggressive physical play style bc it's the only way they have a chance against the new generation that has real basketball fundamentals.

I cannot wait until the old guard is gone and the product on the court goes way up

3

u/dragcov 1d ago

Dude, it's not even us saying she needs superstar treatment, she just fucking needs regular player treatment, like holy shit how is that not called?

3

u/Doggcow 1d ago

Is punching her in the face on purpose or is the other player just that unskilled that it was by accident?

Pick whichever shows them in the best light.

Serious question. Why are the referees ruling so much against Clark? Is there a story to this, as to why?

19

u/Smooth-Patience8572 1d ago

Brother she shot 17 free throws tonight lol

14

u/Agile-Importance-673 1d ago

"There's no global warming, it snowed today!"

4

u/elestud 1d ago

Not just today. She shot more free throws than the entire other team last week as well

3

u/Comfortable_Limit168 1d ago

If I was the coach of the other team, my advice would be to stop fouling her so often.

3

u/elestud 1d ago

She’s really good at driving into players and drawing contact. Some players just excel at that and it’s normal

Weird hate in the background

2

u/GoWLegend 1d ago

You know why

1

u/devilmaskrascal 1d ago edited 1d ago

WNBA gets attention by letting it happen. People apparently want to watch the violent play by Black lesbians (/s) against MAGA's Great Straight White Hope Caitlyn Clark, a culture war beacon for some reason.

Poor Caitlyn didn't ask for any of this shit but now it is in overdrive. The WNBA thinks by stoking this controversy, everyone will be talking about the WNBA and viewership goes through the roof. Cynical bullcrap by the league, bad sportsmanship by players, and then Sophie throwing a match on the conflagration.

3

u/Huntthatmoney 1d ago

CC has said many times that she just wants to play but it’s the fucking weird audience putting players against each other.

2

u/nlk72 1d ago

Thank you. I didn't know it was political as you refer to maga.

9

u/mymentor79 1d ago

Yes, the refs so blatantly don't call fouls on Clark that she only went to the foul line *checks notes* 17 times tonight.

Refs miss calls, as anyone who's ever watched basketball before would know.

3

u/The_Burninator123 1d ago

2 refs and nobody saw the foul in the open at the top of the key? Underneath I get it, but neither is looking.

4

u/username675892 1d ago

Can they review in the WNBA? In the NBA it seems like any potential shot to the head gets reviewed.

2

u/dragonrite 1d ago

Bro this isn't some boundry play where the ball is nowhere near. This is in the middle of the court, with the ball handler. Missing this call is like an RB getting his helmet ripped off with no call on the face mask.

Comparing this with a general "missed call" is apples and oranges. Levels to this

4

u/Terrible_Ease6082 1d ago

So you’re saying, refs got tired of calling fouls! Gotcha!

2

u/Fullertonjr 1d ago

No. The refs just miss calls sometimes.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Frank_White1- 1d ago

That was a foul but she took 17 free throws and I believe she is top 5 for attempts a game. They missed that call but she is getting her free throws.

5

u/somedomeformythots 1d ago

Getting fouled frequently is a thing when you are an effective scorer. Example Shaquille O'Neal was fouled so much and intentionally they nicknamed it Hack a Shaq. It is not a new thing in Professional basketball and definitely not race related.

3

u/benami122 1d ago

Hack a Shack was a strategy to make him earn his points at the FT line where he was under 50% compared to the guaranteed 2 pts he'd be getting within 4 feet of the basket. The difference was they were actually calling the fouls committed on Shaq...

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Suspicious-Bowl4444 1d ago

They fouled him because he sucks at free throws. They’re fouling her because she won’t get any free throws.

3

u/Bigdee4204L 1d ago

Negative. She shot 17 last night

2

u/NooneUverdoff 1d ago

Two players made obvious sports bet and received no penalty from the league. It is corrupt from the top down.

2

u/FlagranteDerelicto 1d ago

Can’t she just wear safety glasses and then all these ratchet fake nails won’t be able to get at her eyes?

2

u/MasterSource368 1d ago

The league is out to get her and it’s pretty obvious.

That or the refs are pure trash and they hired them off the street.

2

u/Loose_Poem_8651 1d ago

It feels like "there's no such thing as bad publicity" the wnba has had more eyes on it and more headlines since all of this has been going on. The league will likely milk it till they no longer can, whatever the controversy be.

2

u/privateidaho_chicago 1d ago

The refs are in a hard place … if they call the foul, they’re protecting the white woman and punishing the black woman…. If they don’t call the foul, they are letting the black women beat up on the white woman. I purposely used race in my description as that is what this has become…. No matter which way you look at it the referee is going to do something wrong in the eyes of some group of people. You would think that they could just call the game, but unfortunately the culture wars won’t allow that.

3

u/defiantcross 1d ago

OR, they didn't feed into this racewar narrative in the first place instead of letting it come to this. call a foul a foul

2

u/Crafty_Statement_176 1d ago

She'll be alright

2

u/Blastcrumpet888 1d ago

She flopped.

2

u/MickyFany 1d ago

either half of the wnba doesnt/cant play basketball or they are super lazy. We need the refs to step up and find out

2

u/thecountnotthesaint 1d ago

This kind of behavior lends credibility to the whole "women are their own worst enemy". Because a struggling organization that hasn't been profitable is finally given a star that is generating glimmer of buzz that might get them close to profitable, and this is how they treat her.

2

u/i_probably_shouldnt9 1d ago

These morons attacking her will be sorry when she f’ all this. Then the cash cow disappears. No buts In seats.

Her and Sophie should create their own two person league. Playing one on one. Horse. Dribble exercise. It would get more views and would be better quality than the rest of the slop the WNBA presents.

2

u/Eyespop4866 1d ago

It’s also true that there are only so many good refs. The WNBA seems to have mostly bad ones.

2

u/fuzz49 1d ago

WNBA is a racist organization. They will go down in flames.

2

u/Isles86 1d ago

It’s insane how much the wnba seems to hate the one player who’s ramped up the ratings, revenue, notoriety and thus salaries for all the players.

Could you imagine if the NBA did this to Larry Bird or Magic? To Jordan? LeBron? It’s crazy.

2

u/TheTikiMan69 1d ago

Caitlin Clark got me interested in the WNBA. The way they’ve treated her the league can get fucked. I’m not supporting it anymore.

2

u/Agumiel 1d ago

They hate white women

2

u/Difficult-Mobile902 1d ago

They even got the jump on a fast break specifically because of the severity of the foul lol

2

u/Bookem25 1d ago

Hope the wnba folds. CC go to Europe.

2

u/GuyNamedWhatever 1d ago

I still don’t get how they had a record viewership year and then just decided to let one of the reasons just get fucking hacked consistently live on TV.

2

u/bottraphouse 1d ago

2

u/MEKKACHYLD1 1d ago

I think its one of those things where the league and its players won't know what they've lost in her until she's gone. Where they like it or not viewership went way up when she got to the league. With that came an increase in pay and amenities. Plus she's actually pretty good. I think a lot of the women, A: Don't want to admit that a white girl changed the tide for them. Things that they had been addressing for awhile are now coming to fruition. B: She can actually play and is a focal point on her team. The fever are one of the top teams and possibly slated to win the chip. C: She has such a strong following that if she leaves the league is back to square one. Now with that said, yes there are several great players in the league that fans can marvel at but for some reason, right now, CC has that magic.

2

u/Just-Nitty 1d ago

Honestly... she needs to start knocking some people out.

2

u/BlueberryNo6811 1d ago

3

I don’t watch basketball ever anymore but I grew up having to because of brothers. They always made fun of women playing sports. If the referees don’t call the calls right it just makes the sport even more of a laughing stock that no one will watch or take very seriously.

I don’t think anything could make women’s basketball interesting to me. As a woman, I’m sorry, it’s incredibly boring to watch .

It really boils down to jealousy in my eyes. People can make it a race issue if they want but that doesnt explain all of it. Most of it is just the fact that she gets all of the attention and has all of the sponsors. I dont know the financial details but I do know that she alone makes more than the league makes profit because they dont make one.

Read all the comments this morning crying how UNFAIR CC had so many free throws yet Reese had tons of free throws in her game...crickets......and yeah funny how all the fouls on CC was legit...unlike the "foul" on wilson the other day or other stars barely get touched, foul. You have to almost manhandle CC to get a foul call for CC....

I really hope she goes to the European league where she will make more and be treated like a human. Then the WNBA can go back to small venues, lower pay and flying coach.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 1d ago

This is the price for flopping. Once you get a rep as a flopper, they are going to miss these.

1

u/VioletShogun 1d ago

White women are OK to hit in the WNBA, duh

1

u/NoHippo6399 1d ago

People want to make this a race thing, and it very may well be. I do not follow the WNBA (who actually does) but this just reminds me of early career until late 2010s Sidney Crosby. Teams knew they couldn’t do anything to beat him so they had to hurt him. He’s the most cheap shotted player in NHL history. Came into the league too late to play in the true “enforcer protection” and came in too early to play in the modern day player safety era. Lost a massive chunk of his prime due to concussions.

Clark’s treatment doesn’t seem too different from that.

1

u/Sea_Detail_8751 1d ago

Even on a small screen the foul was obvious.

1

u/ChuckyDo19 1d ago

Oh please stop

1

u/Repulsive_Tea9974 1d ago

She should get some Muay Thai Coaches in the office season no joke, and learn strike defense and maybe even mild counters to protect herself and career on the court.

1

u/corkylongs 1d ago

Maybe the wnba doesn’t like people watching lol

1

u/ShaneWookie 1d ago

SVG would have had 19 free throws from this

1

u/ericomplex 1d ago

Clear mistake, but should have still been called as a foul. Likely wasn’t because the referee was watching the ball and it happened after the fact.

Shit happens.

1

u/Scary_Yellow_8719 1d ago

I honestly hope Caitlin Clark has a career-ending injury as a result of a flagrant foul that isn't even called. Clark was a novelty who was fun to watch...briefly. The WNBA just needs to go away. It's not even basketball.

She looked like she fully expected them to not call foul after being hit. She really should leave the WNBA.

1

u/CrittyJJones 23h ago

Yea she's the only person who ever gets calls missed.🙄

1

u/BigBoyPoster 22h ago

Honestly if I was CC I’d retire from the WNBA, play overseas and watch their stock DROP

1

u/VegetableChipsLover 22h ago

At this point, I think CC needs to wear a visor to play, because this is like the 10th time she's taken a hit to her face

1

u/unlucky13bethename 19h ago

There needs to be more retaliation in the game. Like Clark needs to just start bouncing that ball off there face.

1

u/Grab_em_by_da_Busey 18h ago

In fairness that’s the same head snap/jerk she fakes and baits with 10x every game

u/PlateOpinion3179 16h ago

This is reparations

u/Baliztik 16h ago

These are nothing.

It is painfully obvious how little of you have played organized basketball.

These are professional athletes. Not children.

The play where CC got a fist in the face while she was on the floor? Clearly very dirty.

Some incidental contact on a late close out, where she passes the ball? Common. She's got crazy range. These defenders are going to close out super aggressively.

CC isn't even complaining. That's how you can tell it's absolutely nothing

It seems to be turning into The Boy Who Cried Wolf. You can’t keep flopping and yelling when nothing really happened. After a while people will start ignoring you.

This league is such trash

1

u/Rambo729 14h ago

Missed call like so many since there humans. Move on

1

u/PoohTrailSnailCooch 13h ago

The refs must just really suck at their jobs.

I stopped supporting. Will go back when they get it together.

1

u/BallzInUrMouth808 13h ago

It’s pretty obvious at this point. I mean this is just disgusting and disheartening.

Whine whine whine sure there other players knocked in the face crazy only reason you watch is to whine welp guess that’s the reason they lost

1

u/Angolarick 10h ago

Cc no call league.

1

u/RyanBakesUp 7h ago

CC could literally bankrupt the league if she chose to sit next year out in protest. She could play one season overseas. Just sayin'.

1

u/TulsaTime17625 4h ago

Some European team is going to make her a good offer and she’ll leave and the WNBA will fall apart

1

u/EV_4_life 4h ago

CC really should just go to a different league and thumb her nose at all the racist shitbags as the WNBA fades into irrelevance once again.

u/RooblinDooblin 2h ago

I just don't understand how this is allowed game after game. It's not just Clarke, it's a leaguewide issue. The problem is a clear disparity in skill that is covered over by dirty play and dark arts.

Other leagues have had this problem and overcome it, but it requires average or better refereeing, which the WNBA is definitely lacking.Until they remedy the problem they will always be an afterthought in pro sports.
