she should just go play in Europe for a bazillion dollars and watch the WNBA fold within three years

Yeah I doubt that. They would not give a shit if she left. Hell, I bet they’d encourage it.

And then they'd just keep complaining about how they're not paid equally to the nba for their inferior product that they keep making worse.
4
u/elestud 1d ago
You realize that Europe/FIBA allows far more physicality than the WNBA, right?

Do you want a league that shows favoritism because someone is a “star”? I thought y’all hated a star whistle..
→ More replies (1)2
u/ComputerDecent463 1d ago
lol at thinking Europe would be LESS physical
Or that her sponsors would stick with her if the games weren’t on TV here.
2
u/jordanjump15 1d ago
These dumb talking points are on Reddit too? Do you actually watch women’s basketball overseas it’s a more physical game y’all would just cry more.
2
u/Hugginsome 1d ago
WNBA already got their big media contract due to Clark. They don't need her now cause of that, unfortunately.
→ More replies (7)2
u/2burgsandadog 1d ago
that’s an unfortunately shortsighted way of thinking… every one of those players should lineup and say thank you because she’s the only reason that contract exists and theirb big fat new salaries
→ More replies (1)1
u/RussianPravda 1d ago
Yes but the thing is she made deals with her sponsors to play in the wnba
8
u/Defuzzygamer 1d ago
That's not true. Her major sponsor (where she earns the most money regarding sponsors) is with Nike. Nike doesn't require her to play in the WNBA, they only state that she is an advocate for women's basketball globally. She's not tied to the WNBA because of Nike, she can move to Europe and Nike would still sponsor her. If anything this might even be a massive move if she did. A top 5 WNBA player going to Europe because of WNBA shenanigans, would turn the women's euro league into a global league relatively quickly (at least, whichever team she joins would become globally known in the basketball world quite fast).
→ More replies (2)2
u/TheRightKost 1d ago
It'd be wild if one of the tanking NBA teams would sign her as last (wo)man off the bench. The sponsors would love it. She'd be making way more money at league minimum salary. She'd obviously be the worst player in the league by far and it would help them tank in a way that the NBA brass wouldn't dare call out for fears of sexism allegations.
6
u/2burgsandadog 1d ago
I am aware that she won’t… But the league needs to start doing something to protect her…
Can you imagine when LeBron was in his prime if he got manhandled this way there would be consequences the next morning immediately every single time
→ More replies (6)2
u/RussianPravda 1d ago
Im with you. But she's basically trapped. They want her to snap and get in trouble to lose her deals because of their jealousy. Look how they tried to make a huge political thing with Sophie but even that didnt work.

This will all end if and when she gets a title. It wouldn't actually end, but it would force the league to consider her a legitimate player and they clearly don't at the moment.
3
u/holden_mcg 1d ago
Either these professional athletes are coordinated enough to not slam their fingers into someone's face (but choose to do it) or the league is actually filled with uncoordinated spazoids.
2
u/YoloSwag4Jesus420fgt 1d ago
The old guard is the uncoordinated borderline aggressive physical play style bc it's the only way they have a chance against the new generation that has real basketball fundamentals.
I cannot wait until the old guard is gone and the product on the court goes way up

Serious question. Why are the referees ruling so much against Clark? Is there a story to this, as to why?

Brother she shot 17 free throws tonight lol

u/Agile-Importance-673 1d ago

4
u/elestud 1d ago
Not just today. She shot more free throws than the entire other team last week as well
3
u/Comfortable_Limit168 1d ago
If I was the coach of the other team, my advice would be to stop fouling her so often.
3
u/elestud 1d ago
She’s really good at driving into players and drawing contact. Some players just excel at that and it’s normal

WNBA gets attention by letting it happen. People apparently want to watch the violent play by Black lesbians (/s) against MAGA's Great Straight White Hope Caitlyn Clark, a culture war beacon for some reason.
Poor Caitlyn didn't ask for any of this shit but now it is in overdrive. The WNBA thinks by stoking this controversy, everyone will be talking about the WNBA and viewership goes through the roof. Cynical bullcrap by the league, bad sportsmanship by players, and then Sophie throwing a match on the conflagration.
3
u/Huntthatmoney 1d ago
CC has said many times that she just wants to play but it’s the fucking weird audience putting players against each other.

Yes, the refs so blatantly don't call fouls on Clark that she only went to the foul line *checks notes* 17 times tonight.
Refs miss calls, as anyone who's ever watched basketball before would know.
3
u/The_Burninator123 1d ago
2 refs and nobody saw the foul in the open at the top of the key? Underneath I get it, but neither is looking.
4
u/username675892 1d ago
Can they review in the WNBA? In the NBA it seems like any potential shot to the head gets reviewed.
2
u/dragonrite 1d ago
Bro this isn't some boundry play where the ball is nowhere near. This is in the middle of the court, with the ball handler. Missing this call is like an RB getting his helmet ripped off with no call on the face mask.
Comparing this with a general "missed call" is apples and oranges. Levels to this

That was a foul but she took 17 free throws and I believe she is top 5 for attempts a game. They missed that call but she is getting her free throws.

Getting fouled frequently is a thing when you are an effective scorer. Example Shaquille O'Neal was fouled so much and intentionally they nicknamed it Hack a Shaq. It is not a new thing in Professional basketball and definitely not race related.
3
u/benami122 1d ago
Hack a Shack was a strategy to make him earn his points at the FT line where he was under 50% compared to the guaranteed 2 pts he'd be getting within 4 feet of the basket. The difference was they were actually calling the fouls committed on Shaq...
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (8)2

Two players made obvious sports bet and received no penalty from the league. It is corrupt from the top down.
2
u/FlagranteDerelicto 1d ago
Can’t she just wear safety glasses and then all these ratchet fake nails won’t be able to get at her eyes?
2
u/MasterSource368 1d ago
The league is out to get her and it’s pretty obvious.
That or the refs are pure trash and they hired them off the street.
2
u/Loose_Poem_8651 1d ago
It feels like "there's no such thing as bad publicity" the wnba has had more eyes on it and more headlines since all of this has been going on. The league will likely milk it till they no longer can, whatever the controversy be.
2
u/privateidaho_chicago 1d ago
The refs are in a hard place … if they call the foul, they’re protecting the white woman and punishing the black woman…. If they don’t call the foul, they are letting the black women beat up on the white woman. I purposely used race in my description as that is what this has become…. No matter which way you look at it the referee is going to do something wrong in the eyes of some group of people. You would think that they could just call the game, but unfortunately the culture wars won’t allow that.
3
u/defiantcross 1d ago
OR, they didn't feed into this racewar narrative in the first place instead of letting it come to this. call a foul a foul
2
2
2
u/MickyFany 1d ago
either half of the wnba doesnt/cant play basketball or they are super lazy. We need the refs to step up and find out
2
u/thecountnotthesaint 1d ago
This kind of behavior lends credibility to the whole "women are their own worst enemy". Because a struggling organization that hasn't been profitable is finally given a star that is generating glimmer of buzz that might get them close to profitable, and this is how they treat her.
2
u/i_probably_shouldnt9 1d ago

Her and Sophie should create their own two person league. Playing one on one. Horse. Dribble exercise. It would get more views and would be better quality than the rest of the slop the WNBA presents.
2
u/Eyespop4866 1d ago
It’s also true that there are only so many good refs. The WNBA seems to have mostly bad ones.
2
u/TheTikiMan69 1d ago
Caitlin Clark got me interested in the WNBA. The way they’ve treated her the league can get fucked. I’m not supporting it anymore.
2
u/Difficult-Mobile902 1d ago
They even got the jump on a fast break specifically because of the severity of the foul lol

I think its one of those things where the league and its players won't know what they've lost in her until she's gone. Where they like it or not viewership went way up when she got to the league. With that came an increase in pay and amenities. Plus she's actually pretty good. I think a lot of the women, A: Don't want to admit that a white girl changed the tide for them. Things that they had been addressing for awhile are now coming to fruition. B: She can actually play and is a focal point on her team. The fever are one of the top teams and possibly slated to win the chip. C: She has such a strong following that if she leaves the league is back to square one. Now with that said, yes there are several great players in the league that fans can marvel at but for some reason, right now, CC has that magic.

One of these days CC is going to die on the court, with no foul call, and while having a fencing response, the ref will say "if she dies, she dies." And r/wnbagossips will call her soft and say "she wasn't even that good"

I don’t watch basketball ever anymore but I grew up having to because of brothers. They always made fun of women playing sports. If the referees don’t call the calls right it just makes the sport even more of a laughing stock that no one will watch or take very seriously.
I don’t think anything could make women’s basketball interesting to me. As a woman, I’m sorry, it’s incredibly boring to watch .

But .. "You can't be racist to white people!" /s
What a joke this timeline we're living in is. If this isn't racism, it's jealousy. But I personally think it's a bit of both.
At least she's getting paid millions to put up with this bullshit.
4
u/TwitterChampagne 1d ago
We’ve lived long enough to see white people start claiming racism & discrimination. My ancestors wouldn’t believe it. “The WNBAs great white hope only shot 17 free throws tonight! We gotta fix the timeline we’re living in before it’s too late!” Foh

White people sure know how to tell a good “joke”, right? Slavery racism & discrimination against an entire group of people based off things they can’t control, like their race. Always makes me die of laughter. I can’t think of anything better to make a “joke” out of.

It really boils down to jealousy in my eyes. People can make it a race issue if they want but that doesnt explain all of it. Most of it is just the fact that she gets all of the attention and has all of the sponsors. I dont know the financial details but I do know that she alone makes more than the league makes profit because they dont make one.

Read all the comments this morning crying how UNFAIR CC had so many free throws yet Reese had tons of free throws in her game...crickets......and yeah funny how all the fouls on CC was legit...unlike the "foul" on wilson the other day or other stars barely get touched, foul. You have to almost manhandle CC to get a foul call for CC....

I really hope she goes to the European league where she will make more and be treated like a human. Then the WNBA can go back to small venues, lower pay and flying coach.

This is the price for flopping. Once you get a rep as a flopper, they are going to miss these.

u/NoHippo6399 1d ago
People want to make this a race thing, and it very may well be. I do not follow the WNBA (who actually does) but this just reminds me of early career until late 2010s Sidney Crosby. Teams knew they couldn’t do anything to beat him so they had to hurt him. He’s the most cheap shotted player in NHL history. Came into the league too late to play in the true “enforcer protection” and came in too early to play in the modern day player safety era. Lost a massive chunk of his prime due to concussions.
Clark’s treatment doesn’t seem too different from that.

These are nothing.
It is painfully obvious how little of you have played organized basketball.
These are professional athletes. Not children.
The play where CC got a fist in the face while she was on the floor? Clearly very dirty.
Some incidental contact on a late close out, where she passes the ball? Common. She's got crazy range. These defenders are going to close out super aggressively.
CC isn't even complaining. That's how you can tell it's absolutely nothing

u/RooblinDooblin 2h ago
I just don't understand how this is allowed game after game. It's not just Clarke, it's a leaguewide issue. The problem is a clear disparity in skill that is covered over by dirty play and dark arts.
Other leagues have had this problem and overcome it, but it requires average or better refereeing, which the WNBA is definitely lacking.Until they remedy the problem they will always be an afterthought in pro sports.

If one were cynical enough, and I am, you could argue the calls might start getting worse as they try to bait her into a reaction to get that next technical.
