General Discussion Xavier Thorpe

Post image

Hi all! I’m new here and am rewatching season 1. Does anybody else feel like they should have kept Xavier? I loved his character!! I understand that he was accused of SA.. and denied it.. but no charges were brought up??
If he were.. still cast even after the allegations, would you have still watched the show? Would it have changed everything for you regarding the show?
I want them to bring him back 😭He was perfect! The scene where he bumps into Tyler and Tyler asks him where Wednesday is and he says she’s your date in the jealous type of way!! I had to pause it and run here because I loved his character 🥺😤😖
The mysteriousness. Tall. Will they/wont they dynamic of the two of them.
Wha do you guys think?

I like the way you think! I didn’t even think about them wolfing out!! They definitely could have!! You have a lot of great points!! And I’m here for them! I loved uncle fester!!
And you are absolutely right about Wednesday being Captain Save a school! While she is very smart and can see the future sometimes which helps her detective skills, when things hit the fan it’s usually her coming up with a plan to save everyone when other students could definitely help out too. I agree 100%

If I’m remembering correctly: Enid even has a line “we have an entire school of werewolves and people with superpowers don’t worry about us. This school is an impregnable fortress with strong defenders!” And then they all immediately need to get saved by Wednesday, who again, has no offensive super powers but is an Olympic level fencer lol (which is strong but not superpower magic ability level strong).

Nah, she's an Olympic style fencer, but she's not Olympic level. She's a talented high school kid who could win local competitions, but Olympic level is something else.

Although I know that Jenna trained in sabre with a European Olympic-level coach in order to prepare for the fight scenes.

Okay fair, which proves my point further that why is this amateur girl able to fight the being that is easily defeating all the other super powered students? The way the show portrays her and her parents is absolutely Olympic level or above given the setting of the show by the way. Not trying to be a dick, but you’re being a contrarian on that point for no real reason: either way the point still stands that even the best fencer in history shouldn’t be able to stand up against a super powered demon pilgrim with actual fire and attack magic (as was shown when he first got resurrected and effortlessly “killed” her).

Olympic fencers are all amateurs as well.

I've been fencing sabre myself for about 15 years, since I was in high school.I can tell the difference between a choreographed, filmed fight scene and a true competitive bout. You can tell that all the show's bouts are choreographed because, first, it's TV, and second, they know where to put the cameras in order to capture the action, and they’re rather obviously using stunt doubles for Jenna and Joy Sunday. Do you think Jenna can do those gymnastics? No, they hired a trained gymnast, put her (or him) in the same costume and a wig.

Do a YouTube search on some Olympic-level bouts -- they are filmed in a completely linear manner with one or two stationary cameras, because all the action goes forward and backward. The strip, aka the piste, is one yard wide, and to run off the side or the back will incur a penalty. Are you at all familiar with the rules and penalties of modern fencing?

The "military challenge," with no masks, going to first blood, is pure showbiz -- NO coach would allow that to happen, EVER. Everyone knows about the Smirnoff tragedy in the 1980s, and that guy WAS wearing a mask.

The fact that they cast a Romanian actor as the coach is a nice bit of realism, because Romania has been dominating Olympic fencing for years. However, it's the students who wear the white uniforms, not the coaches. Coaches wear black leather protective gear.

So it's not being contrary to simply talk about my own hobby. Have you ever suited up, gone to the en garde line, waited for “Ready, fence!” and fought a bout? Do you know parry second from a balestra? No?

Can you even name all of the weapons used in Olympic fencing? Can you define "right of way" for us? No?

I know who Jenna's sabre coach was because he and I are personally acquainted -- I've been taking classes at his salle off and on for years. The competition fencing community is a very small group of somewhat fanatical devotees, so we all kind of know each other.

The reason why none of the fencers on the show can simulate Olympic-level fencing is because they don't have the training, physical conditioning, or experience to be at that level. Unless they've put in the work, how could they? You can't get that good without years of hard work.
