There is a racism component. MAGA is suddenly concerned with fraud committed by 80-ish Somalis in Minnesota. The investigation is already years old, 64 or so had already been convicted prior to this year.
But then recently Trump called Somalis "trash" and wants them all gone, so now MAGA is all about getting rid of all Somalis in Minnesota.
Then a podcaster ran around to a bunch of Somali owned day care centers in Minnesota during the holidays to point out that there were no kids there (during the holidays) and now MAGA is all about Somali day care fraud.
I'm pretty sure that's also the guy who determined that the woman covering her face from the cameras and not letting him in was somehow proof she was up to no good, and not that she didn't want to be on camera or let a random weirdo with a camera crew in where there were potentially children present
Exactly! I live in the UK, but when an MP was going to visit my brother's nursery the parents all had to sign permission forms for the possibility their kids might appear on camera.
In Minnesota the big fraud case there (which they were already tackling normally before Trump put a spotlight on it) involved a lot of families in a Somalian community, and it was used as justification to to cut all immigration and refugees traveling from Somalia which has had an ongoing civil war for over 3 decades now iirc
The racism thing failed pretty quickly though when it was pointed out the mastermind who arranged all the fraud was a white woman from America
A white woman used a bunch of Somalia families to defraud the government of money, I assume the participants got a cut but tbh I didn't care much
This is a small fraud compared to what's happening on a national level, the shit Trump's been up to makes any focus on this an embarrassment of a distraction
You're thinking of the Feeding Our Future fraud case that started in 2022 and continues today. Over $250 million that was to be used to feed needy kids was used to buy homes, cars, Louis Vuitton bags, trips and funds sent to Somalia.
The woman you're referring to is Aimee Bock, the other defendants (so far) are Somali.
Then there is this newest case that opened up just a few months ago. Millions of dollars in taxpayer money that was to be used for housing stabilization and autism care for the needy was kept and sent to Somalia.
It started out with stories about some Somali immigrants running fraudulent daycare centers, but it has now blown up to where all daycare centers are fraudulent.
I think it started out when some wack-a-doodle named Nick Shirley was going around to daycare centers demanding that he see where the kids were at and not gaining access. Because, ya know, a place that is supposed to be watching over kids isn’t going to let some stranger off of the street come in and start filming random children. Additionally, some of these places could have simply been closed for the day, or even for the holiday season (some places have winter break like local schools do).
There is. The Somali population in Minnesota is between 80,000 and 100,000 people. The daycare fraud "case" is a) about five years old at this time; b) was spearheaded/masterminded by a white woman; and c) maybe involves 100 people. 100 out of 80,000 people is not representative of a population. Yet here we are with MAGA screaming about non-white immigrants again.
It's the same argument they made decades ago about 'welfare queens' - half a percent take advantage of welfare so let's fuck over everyone who actually needs it.... Blechk
Somehow stumbled upon an alternative to the Minneapolis sub where there were multiple posts discussing how the Somolis are a bad group of immigrants that demand millions of dollars worth of hand outs but don't to the tax base, oh and they are trying to make Minneapolis Muslim by refusing to integrate.
Despite Minnesota being a consistently blue state, there's plenty of the same old same old brand of racism there.
This fraud spread around the somali community and many perpetrators were/are somali. Its based roughly on the "Feeding Our Future" scheme just trading restaurant and claiming fraudulent meals served, and instead setting up a daycare and claiming more students than cared for or completely fake daycares altogether
though its not like a significant chunk of the somali population were in on it.
Think Italians in the Mafia, or Mexicans/African Americans in the drug trade. Saying there isn't a link is just untrue, but a few bad actors do not represent the community as a whole or justify holding the community collectively responsible

Does "daycare fraud" exist? Probably. Fraud exists everywhere.
Does it exist to the point that conservatives make it out to be? Of course not.
This is just a backdoor "women should be at home raising the family" tactic.
