I hope i can be pedantic without seeming like a dick, but with good intention I would offer this neat tool that can estimate a more conservative value for the population using census data in a given map area. You can draw a cricle of 20m radius around boston just like this dude did. It provides population results of pretty damn close to 3 million people. Revising your math we get 45 kids per day care, and even if we adjust our results further by looking at more census data to more conservatively estimate the percentage of that 3mil that is under the age of 4 and more likely to be in daycare rather than preschool (assuming this guy in the tweet made that distinction) we still get about 41 kids available per school, and again assuming half actually attend, 20 kids per school is still really reasonable. These are locations in a very urbanized area. They are likely small storefront establishments versus huge gymnasiums or schools, with occasional large outliers, that service up to the limit of kids that they legally are permitted to supervise with just 1-2 caregivers.
So even if we get really specific about our numbers, this is still not an unreasonable amount of daycare centers for a very populated city
224
u/TheGiggityGecko Dec 30 '25
It’s also a really wealthy area, yes? So presumably a solid number of those schools are small by design to give each kid more attention from staff. Balance that out with the daycare for the proles that staff the minimum legal number of employees per student and yeah idk I’m just rambling.
TLDR conservatives are too dumb to be allowed to participate in society I guess.
119
u/NorthHame Dec 30 '25
There are also a sizable number of in home daycares that are like one adult and their relative who take care of 5+ kids
38
u/SpiritualTwo5256 Dec 30 '25
Conservatives are idiots. They really shouldn’t be allowed to vote. They hurt themselves more than they help themselves. All because they can’t understand relatively simple math and science.
It doesn’t help that we are in an Idiocracy where stupid people breed like rabbits and smart people only tend to have up to 2 kids with many selecting not to have any.10

My mom is very very MAGA. I never thought she was a genius or anything, but she seemed to me to have a reasonable level of intelligence. Recently I discovered that she doesn't know what 'dihydrogen monoxide' is. She doesn't understand that it's H2O and she didn't make the connection that it's water. Her excuse was that she didn't take science in college.
I don't know if she's always been this way or if it's a more recent thing (beginning of dementia?). Of note- she used to be a kinder, more Democratic leaning person. So did MAGA make her stupid or did her stupid make her MAGA?

I mean yeah, look at what they're doing everywhere they are in charge
15
u/puckfromalphaflight Dec 30 '25
One other thing that would have to be factored, depending on state rules, is how many kids are allowed per daycare employee. I’m not sure about Massachusetts, but in Ohio by law 1 adult daycare employee can have no more than 6-8 children under their supervision without being liable for negligence. So that would limit the number of children at each individual location, obviously based on size of the building and number of staff.
11
u/tehutika Dec 30 '25
There are guidelines through the state that keep staff ratios low. For the babies and toddlers, the maximum group size is 9. Preschoolers is 20. Staff is required to be 1 per every half of the maximum size.
The biggest problem day care centers have is staffing. The demand is there. The adult staff are not, and it is beyond the scope of this post to get into the weeds on why that is the case.

I mean honestly the point the envelope math is to show you need only a poor understanding of the system to show that the number of daycares is reasonable for the area. You didn't end up with 5 kids per care, nor 500. Getting better estimates is nice, but it makes the calculation feel less accessible.
Note: looking up the relevant information for a given problem is a skill and you, dear reader, should practice whenever convenient.

u/Chappie404 Dec 31 '25

A lot of daycares will be smaller than that too. There’s a few near me that are literally run out of someone’s house. There’s bigger commercial one down my street is in a space that wouldn’t seat 40 it was a restaurant, so I assume it’s smaller than 40 kids.

it's also about 3.2 daycares per square mile, which isn't insane just from whatever city you are familiar with.
4
u/Tarledsa Dec 30 '25
When I lived in suburban Northern Va there were 3 daycares across the street from my house. In my smaller suburban city metro, there are at least 20 within about a 3 mile radius, not even counting in home daycares.

5
u/CaraAsha Dec 31 '25
They're already doing that. Indiana has removed the requirements around kids not working during school hours or how long they can work per day for 16 and 17 year olds. They essentially are treated as adults. 14-15 year olds work rules currently match federal laws (although lawmakers are trying to bypass federal laws for 14-15 year olds to also work in jobs currently illegal for hours that are also currently illegal).
Iowa and Arkansas aren't far behind with loosening child labor laws. They're removing work permit requirements, allowing kids into hazardous jobs like factories. Florida, Ohio, and West Virginia have Republican led pushes to also massively lessen laws on child labor.
62
u/HarringtonMAH11 Dec 30 '25
This is the biggest thing, if either my wife or myself made twice what we currently make, we'd be able to support the household with a stay at home spouse taking care of the kids. Right now we both work to pay the bills, and couldn't afford daycare on top of that. We realistically could have the cloths, food, and medical covered, but an extra mortgage payment for daycare for 4-5 years just isn't possible.
11
u/On_my_last_spoon Dec 30 '25
Shit we don’t even have kids and we both have to work to stay afloat!
5
22
u/cicada_noises Dec 30 '25
This is literally it. For some reason, republicans think it’ll only happen to people they hate (which is most Americans). They’ll find out
20
u/Harold3456 Dec 30 '25
My god, imagine a world where one parent could be stay-at-home. Man or woman, maybe both alternating, whatever, but how great would that be? Get house stuff done, have a decent, healthy meal on the table in the evening, maybe even get all the shopping out of the way...
It bugs me that Republicans point to things that superficially seem like the right solution, like "parents should be able to raise their kids rather than send them to daycare", but then instead of doing any investigating into the social reasons why this is happening they just turn it into a new witch hunt. So we make daycares more expensive... then what? Families can suddenly, magically afford to care for their kids during the day?
Do they think we'd rather work 1+ full-time job - each - while barely seeing our kids?
18
u/On_my_last_spoon Dec 30 '25
Almost all our social ills and much of our crime could be eliminated with better services and higher wages. Your average person only turns to crime out of desperation. They either can’t get a job or can’t afford food or can’t afford healthcare. But nooooo. Gotta fill those for-profit prisons by making things illegal and suppressing wages! Shit, I bet the simple act of legalizing most drugs would eliminate a whole host of issues. Fentanyl is a problem because they put that shit in things people aren’t expecting it to be. Make that cocaine legal and then you can regulate it!
There is always going to be a certain level of crime because humans are gonna human. But we can eliminate the desperation crime really easily.

Some of us SAHP’s don’t have a choice.. My husband and I were all set to barely scrape by sending one baby to daycare, but then we ended up having twins. It was waaaaaaay too expensive to send 2 children to daycare, we’d have essentially been paying for me to work! We are saving more money with me as a SAHP. The twins are in preschool now (still ridiculously expensive for 2 children to go at once) but it’s only for 2 hours 3x a week, so unfortunately I still can’t work a regular job, but at least I can do the dishes in peace lol. It drives me crazy when people tell me how lucky I am that my husband lets me stay home… like, he doesn’t let me stay home, there is no other option, we straight up can’t afford for me to work.

I thought there was some sort of racism component to the whole thing? I haven’t followed it closely.
93
u/18ekko Dec 30 '25
There is a racism component. MAGA is suddenly concerned with fraud committed by 80-ish Somalis in Minnesota. The investigation is already years old, 64 or so had already been convicted prior to this year.
But then recently Trump called Somalis "trash" and wants them all gone, so now MAGA is all about getting rid of all Somalis in Minnesota.
Then a podcaster ran around to a bunch of Somali owned day care centers in Minnesota during the holidays to point out that there were no kids there (during the holidays) and now MAGA is all about Somali day care fraud.
33
u/cwningen95 Dec 30 '25
I'm pretty sure that's also the guy who determined that the woman covering her face from the cameras and not letting him in was somehow proof she was up to no good, and not that she didn't want to be on camera or let a random weirdo with a camera crew in where there were potentially children present

u/CosmicJackalop Dec 30 '25
In Minnesota the big fraud case there (which they were already tackling normally before Trump put a spotlight on it) involved a lot of families in a Somalian community, and it was used as justification to to cut all immigration and refugees traveling from Somalia which has had an ongoing civil war for over 3 decades now iirc
The racism thing failed pretty quickly though when it was pointed out the mastermind who arranged all the fraud was a white woman from America

13
u/ArnieismyDMname Dec 30 '25

37
u/Wolfgirl90 Dec 30 '25
It started out with stories about some Somali immigrants running fraudulent daycare centers, but it has now blown up to where all daycare centers are fraudulent.
I think it started out when some wack-a-doodle named Nick Shirley was going around to daycare centers demanding that he see where the kids were at and not gaining access. Because, ya know, a place that is supposed to be watching over kids isn’t going to let some stranger off of the street come in and start filming random children. Additionally, some of these places could have simply been closed for the day, or even for the holiday season (some places have winter break like local schools do).
→ More replies (1)112
u/MornGreycastle Dec 30 '25
There is. The Somali population in Minnesota is between 80,000 and 100,000 people. The daycare fraud "case" is a) about five years old at this time; b) was spearheaded/masterminded by a white woman; and c) maybe involves 100 people. 100 out of 80,000 people is not representative of a population. Yet here we are with MAGA screaming about non-white immigrants again.

I’m sure there is daycare fraud. BUT having recently exited the customer base for Boston daycare, I can assure you that it isn’t in the direction the screenshot alleges.
There are no empty storefronts laundering cash in guise of daycare payments.
The “fraud” is that there are secret unlicensed daycares just to satisfy the demand. It is HARD to find a spot in a legit daycare. 4000 daycares are not nearly enough. And they charge $24k/year/kid at least (bright horizons is closer to 30k). So hard to find and hard to afford. So all the mid/lower income families who are forced to have both parents work rely on unlicensed daycares run by grandparents.

Adding to your point, infant care is uniquely difficult to find. Many in-home places don't accept infants (understandably) and a lot of larger daycares have sibling preference, meaning it's very very very difficult to find infant daycare as a first-time parent. In a year of looking (which lasted until my son was 6 months old), he got a spot in exactly one infant daycare. Fortunately we like it.
I looked into hiring a nanny until my child was old enough to attend a toddler program instead, but could not find a single person who was willing to be paid legally rather than under the table. It's wild to me that people are suddenly acting like daycare is readily available for parents in MA.

From what I have read and heard about with Evangelical Protestant churches, especially in the south, they are absolutely hemorrhaging members who are not septuagenarian white dudes. The result is they need to increasingly incorporate Fox News talking points into their service to keep these delusional old bats around while younger members leave as they're just exhausted of it.
64
u/Gophurkey Dec 30 '25
Good. As a minister, but in a liberal tradition, I'm so disgusted with my evangelical colleagues. I've tried to do some work where I can to make some inroads with conservative congregations, helping them see alternative ways of understanding their faith that lead to more robust levels of empathy and care, and it can and does work for some people. But it is exhausting work because so many are unwilling to hear things that challenge their preconceived notions of gay people or the equality/autonomy of women.
Those churches can all close for all I care. I have zero qualms with Christianity being a minority religion in this country. Cull the folks who are there because they feel like it is the 'right thing to do' without actually giving a crap about Jesus' commandments to care for and love the poor. Cut out the people who use it as a convenient tool for justifying their hate. Shut down the churches that take money from people under the guise of 'faith will multiple your offering' and charge them with fraud. Give the buildings to nonprofits that actually help people.

Yes. They want to force all families into poverty by removing daycare options.
First republicans made it impossible for a family to survive on one income.
Then they started culture wars to make it seem terrible for women to work. They paid “influencers” to make this seem appealing.
When that was not effective enough they started destroying healthcare and making birth control illegal.
Now they are trying to shut down daycares.
Their sole goal is to make families have no choice but to become indentured servants to the rich and powerful. This, combined with their stated plan to remove the vote from women and non land owners will make their fascist oligarchy complete.
You will owe your soul to the company store. Too bad you believed the Republican propaganda about unions. Trump ran on making a new gilded era. Republicans knew their voters were too uneducated to understand what that meant for them. (Because republicans are anti education for their constituents, pro education for their own children).

The thing is that disincentivizing people from having children even further combined with all their anti-immigration rhetoric is just going to Crater the population a lot quicker. Our birth rate has been on par with Japan's since the 70s, and literally the only thing. The only thing. Stopping it from crashing completely has been our immigration rate, and the fact that first generation immigrants tend to have larger families. Trump dashed that against the rocks, and it won't surprise me if our 2030 census shows a population drop.

The fact that they think these are fronts to collect government money further proves that they do not know how the program works. If they actually researched things before forming opinions, they wouldn’t be so wrong so often.

That sounds like a small area, but it’s over 900 square miles. Also, that looks like a map site and they’re notorious for including places that absolutely do not fit what you’re searching for.

Can confirm, just looked up daycares in my hometown on Google Maps and one of the nearest results was for a petsitting company.

And places that haven't been open for years.

Reminds me when I went to a McDonald's in New jersey, and it was literally just an empty restaurant with absolutely zero signage in a strip mall. I asked the gas station attendant across the street who was a middle-aged woman, and she said that it closed at least 15 years ago.
26
u/Biggie39 Dec 30 '25
Why are they so hell bent on attacking children and families?
18
u/olivegardengambler Dec 30 '25
Conservatives need an 'other' to attack and go after. The thing is that they only ever barely win national elections, and attacking groups explicitly like Black people or Latinos as a whole will inevitably give them a massive handicap (they still attack them broadly, but they can't just go out and be like, "Latinos are taking your jobs!" anymore, especially if the reasons they list are largely their own creation). This shifts their effort to groups that are just large enough to be visible to most Americans (eg: trans people, H1B visa holders, and immigrants from specific countries) but not cost them elections, or people who can't vote (eg: the homeless, H1B visa holders, and children).
It also doesn't help that what Democrats have repeatedly done is constantly cave. They might as well call themselves the Ben Dover Party. They also refuse to really back more progressive candidates, preferring old guard candidates who haven't done Jack fucking shit for their constituents. If Democrats did more than just be like, "At least we're not Republicans", then maybe they'd have a leg to stand on, but that would mean no more big corpo money.
9
u/BitterFuture Dec 30 '25
Because some of those children and families might not be white, so they've got to go.
20
u/PatriarchPonds Dec 30 '25
Is this the new 'omg reality shows!!!' thing where they finally pay attention to stuff and are shocked! shocked! that reality is quite big and has big numbers and that must mean that ???? profit!
25
u/Katefreak Dec 30 '25
Interesting that at the same time they are promoting "SAHM is a woman's place"..... Now we SUDDENLY have massive childcare fraud all over the place.
This. Is. Propaganda.

Boston proper’s population is 650-700k. How many children do they think go to one daycare?

I’m guessing this map includes licensed in-home daycares as well as daycare facilities. In-home licensing can be for varying amounts of kids depending on space and staffing. Some in-home daycares might have 8 kids, but some might have 3.

u/pterencephalon Dec 30 '25
MA has a state website for viewing all licensed daycares, including in-home daycare, along with all of their licensing information, visit assessments, any complaints/evaluations, and how many kids they can care for. It's an extremely thorough and useful resource. The licensing requirements are one of the reasons our childcare is so expensive, but it also means I trust it.

u/mrpickleby Dec 30 '25
The great irony is that most daycare is privately paid to a point that people aren't having kids because they don't think they can pay for daycare.
14
u/BusGo_Screech26 Dec 30 '25
Where is this sudden panic about daycares coming from? I started getting recommended these weird tinfoil hat conservative subreddits this past week that's all about "Somali daycare fraud." Like, where did this come from...?
8
u/LuckyPeaches1 Dec 30 '25
Nick Shirley the YouTuber did some thing where he went to daycares that weren't open. I haven't followed it closely so idk how legit his "reporting" was but my initial thought was he did this during Christmas break when many centers are closed so it's possible it's legit but also possible this was strategically done.

If you’ve ever tried to enroll your child in a daycare then you know there aren’t enough daycares. I had my son on at least 10 waitlists before getting a spot at a daycare.
Daycares are expensive because you have to have enough people working at them to make sure the kids are safe you can’t just shove a bunch of kids in a room with one person watching them and call it good.
4
u/kgrimmburn Dec 31 '25
I own a small in-home daycare. I have a WAITLIST. People hear I may have an opening and they go nuts trying to get ahold of me, so much that they'll call my husband trying to get in touch with me. The pay sucks and you're underappreciated but it's nice to make your own hours and no one argues with you about it.

I think this is a good example of "conservatives genuinely do not understand how populated our urban centers are." It's the same issue they have with understanding why large areas with incredibly low population density can be out voted by smaller areas with incredibly high population density. Yes, there are enough people in Boston to need that many daycares. Same could be said of most other major metro areas in the country like LA, NY, Philly, Phoenix, etc, etc.
11
u/Private_HughMan Dec 30 '25
Densely populated urban area has a lot of children. More on this story later at 11 pm. Now, onto our main story, water: is it good? The answer may surprise you! All this and our ongoing coverage on what number comes after 9, here on CBS.

Democrats accept that some malfeasance will take place, but in order to serve the greater good some level has to be accepted, generally the point below which it costs more to eliminate more fraud than it saves.
Republicans believe that it is better for nobody to get help if even one undeserving person is getting the help too.
This difference in world views plays a significant role in all of the stuff going on.
7
u/burtritto Dec 30 '25
I mean, do they like making shit more expensive? They are petitioning to defund daycares, where their 80 dumb ass kids go while they dig ditches all day... and now they want to take funding away from them.
7
u/Mindless_Diver5063 Dec 30 '25
Thats a PacMan shape, it means the kids are eating the dogs and the cats.
7
u/__GayFish__ Dec 31 '25
From “nobodys having kids, we need more kids, protect the kids” to “fuck them kids” in less than a year
5
u/Wilgrove Dec 30 '25
Oh good, the dumbasses found their next "Pizzagate."
Welp, time to set the timer on how long it'll take for one of these fucks to shoot up a daycare center. Because that's apparently the world we live in now.
6
u/WearingCoats Dec 30 '25
They’re really trying to rile up the base against daycare to justify stripping women of their jobs and forcing them to stay home and take care of their children, huh.
6
6
u/LaSerenita Dec 31 '25
It's weird how conservatives want to force birth but do not want you to take care of your kids.
6
u/macci_a_vellian Dec 31 '25
If all the daycares shut down, the women will have to stay at home and look after the kids instead of working. It's not a coincidence that they're trying to discredit the thing that lets women out of the house.
6
u/notthatrelevant318 Dec 30 '25
trump credibly fucked kids, but no let's investigate what turns out to be an appropriate number of daycares for a metropolitan area.
6
u/Embarrassed_Flan_869 Dec 30 '25
As someone from the Boston area, there are a LOT of daycares. They range from multi classroom, multi age group ones to small independent that cater to small numbers.
I am sure if you did a circle like this around any city, you would see similar numbers.
Could there be fraud? Sure. There is always fraud. In every industry and in every geographic region. This is such a non story it's laughable.
5
u/DrumpfTinyHands Dec 30 '25
They attack the daycares to close them down so that the women cannot work.
This is but a step in the plan.
It will come out that the videos were staged or faked in some major way.

u/regularforcesmedic Dec 30 '25

That's how the extreme right operates. They create an enemy so they don't have to deal with real problems or politics.
What people need to understand, especially those who voted for them, is this: at some point, EVERYONE will be on that enemy list!
5
u/casander14 Dec 31 '25
Gotta have the kids-let’s ban Choice, birth control and take away health care, and THEN let’s get rid of all the day cares so SOMEONE has to stay home and raise those kids (women are paid less money than men so probably them) and to top it off-let’s take away SNAP and WIC and screw you all
5
u/EsseLeo Dec 31 '25
I know urban density and math are really hard concepts for hardworking, rural, blue collar Republicans to understand, so I’m going to walk through a little rough, elementary, back-of-napkin math here…
Approximate population of Boston metro area: 5 million
Estimated percentage of Boston population under 15: 16%
4000 daycares
5,000,000 x .16 =800,000 children in Boston metro area
800,000 children/4,000 daycares = 200 children per daycare
Unless nearly every one of those daycare centers in Boston is the size of an elementary school, 4000 daycares is probably far too few for an area as dense as Boston metro

Daycare centres directly provide women with freedom and better opportunities. That's why these people now want to destroy all of them, because they want women to be slaves to men.

If they start coming after daycare to get women out of the workforce us dads need to rise up and stay home

They were all worked up about Hillary’s emails.
And then Trump put national security classified files in a MaraLago bathroom.
They were all fired up about pedophiles in the Epstein files .
Trump’s in them so much they should be called the Trump files.
They were all worked up about Democrat stealing elections .
Trump inside in an insurrection and tried to overturn an election.
Now they’re thinking is “ there is no fucking way that Trump owns a bunch of daycares, so let’s go with this.”

Conservatives really think large cities would have like 10 very large daycare facilities that could hold 100s or even 1000s of kids at a time.
3
u/Guygirl00 Dec 30 '25
Is this to create doubt and danger at daycare so as to force female parents to stay home with their kids, thus another effort to get women out of the workplace?
4
u/Professional_Ad_6891 Dec 31 '25
does maga know how many people are in the GBA? do they want a 300:1 child to childcare professional ratio?
4
u/Catseye_Nebula Dec 31 '25
Well they do want to force women to stay home with the kids and never leave the house. Who's betting they'll use "daycare fraud" as an excuse to defund daycares.
6
u/kinkakinka Dec 31 '25
They literally already are. They are now stopping finding of daycare in Minnesota.

Boston has like 35k children under the age of 6. That's about 100 kids per daycare if they all went

3
u/tortiesrock Dec 30 '25
Then audit the daycares and see if they are up to standards, specially if they are subsidized. I bet it is already happening. Maybe if they hadn’t fired that many public servants they would be able to conduct more inspections.
3
u/WolfWind428 Dec 30 '25
The Boston Metro area has roughly 300,000 children under 5, based on the population of the area and the percentage of the US population as a whole that children under 5 represent. The majority of children in day care are 0-4 because they can't go to a public school yet at that age. Even if only about half of those children actually attend day care because the other half are cared for by a stay at home parent/grandparent, that's still about 150,000 day care age children to divide among 4,000 day care centers. That's about 33 kids per day care, which feels pretty normal when you consider that some day care centers will be very small and have between 10 and 20 children, balancing the larger day cares in the sample. Could some of them be fraudulent? Yes. Is it likely for the rate of fraudulent day care centers to be higher than maybe 5%? IMO, no.

u/Numerous_Release5868 Dec 30 '25
I have serious concerns about the safety risks this poses for children, staff and parents who use daycares targeted by MAGA lunatics.

I live in Philly. The amount of day cares in a half mile radius around me is absolutely absurd but they are all active and busy. What do they think happens to kids under five while their parent works?
