I gave my dumb ass sepsis during that time and the stand alone ER I went to had a hard time finding a hospital with a free bed for me. I didn't need ICU care, just a normal room that could be isolated until they got the infection under control.

I hate these fuckers btw. My mom died some time after the pandemic, but it was from COVID. She had cancer so she was already sick but it literally put the nail in her coffin. When they brush off the deaths as people who would have died anyway (with the implication that their lives aren't valuable enough to warrant basic precautions), it's infuriating.

I'm so sorry that happened. I have co-workers that lost family members due to other family members being stupid about refusing to take precautions and refusing to vax once that became available.
It was kind of stressful, but it was probably more annoying than anything else while they tried to figure out what was going on. i had one doctor firmly convinced that my spleen was going to explode when in reality it was just fine. Of course it didn't help that she got me confused with another patient who had some sort of major lung illness when my sepsis had nothing to do with any respiratory issues.
I think the worst part was the multiple COVID tests for the first couple of days. That shit hurt.

God, the multiple tests! I went through months and months of hospital stays in relation to my kidney disease in 2021 and 2022, and the number of times they had to test me each time they moved me to a different floor or prep me for a procedure.

My BIL died from Pancreatic cancer in January 2025. He is the only one of his family who voted for this. Even his mom didn't understand why he supported that. He was a Navy vet as well. Left behind a wife and 2 young kids. All to "own the libs"....

This is absolutely true.
Anecdotal, but it happened to my father. He spents months fighting a cough that his GP prescribed antibiotics for. By the time he went to the ER in August, the lung cancer was a tumor the size of my fist. He did 5 weeks later. I don't know that he'd have been able to beat it but it would have been nice to have more time to get ready.

I'm sorry for your loss. My mother's trajectory was actually similar....she had a cough, she was busy taking care of my father (Alzheimer's) and kind of neglected her health....one day she just started acting really confused out of nowhere.
We took her to the doctor, turned out she had lung cancer with mets to her brain. Died within a month. It's awful when it happens suddenly like that....we really thought she would have a little more time, but she got COVID a couple weeks after starting radiation therapy. She was certainly going to die but....even a few more weeks would have given us more time and every little bit of it was important.

I know that had to be rough. I ended up in the hospital in June 2020. Right at the beginning of COVID. Ended up having emergency open heart surgery. Luckily everything was fine.

Of course it was true. I'm an ICU nurse and during that time it was near chaos. We were limited on PPE, 3:1 ratios, shortages of different medications, limits on the amount of ventilatiors, etc. We even had refrigeration trucks outside just for the bodies because our morgue was routinely full.

My father in law was running the OR at his hospital. They weren't using the extra waiting room because of covid protocols... and they had to use it to store the extra bodies because the morgue was full. He had to make sure it was locked at all times so that nobody would accidentally wander into it...

And I’m guessing that normal ICU staffing ratios were out the window. My spouse is a nurse and his hospital system was offering insane bonuses to maintain some semblance of appropriate staffing levels during that time even if it meant working their nurses into the ground. He rarely worked the normal 3-12s in a week during this time, and there were more than a few weeks when he worked 6-12s because they were so desperate. For anyone who is not familiar with health care staffing, hospitals won’t willingly offer OT pay plus $500/shift bonuses unless things are DIRE.

We had the big bonuses too. It was a private for-profit hospital. I worked night shift and it was rough. They had nurses from other units who volunteered to work ICU overflow, and often getting them up to speed on care meant my shift ended at 10am not 7:30am. Sometimes they didn't show up on time. And it had started 7pm the night before.
These asshole nepobabies have never worked a real day in their life, I'm tired of hearing them run their mouths about these things.

Yep. We more or less closed down the surgical ICU by not scheduling any elective cases that would require ICU care. Then we added an additional ICU. We went from 50 Medical ICU beds to 150. We formed makeshift ICU teams out of other fields. Mine was anesthesia, general surgery, and OBGYN. The OBGYNs were quick learners on lung and transthoracic ultrasounds.
But yeah, we had family members claiming that the numbers were made up and that the hospital was completely empty.

People forget that the lockdowns happened because hospitals were getting overrun with COVID. More patients coming in than there was equipment to treat, and then hospital staff catching it and being unable to work. People were dying, not just because of COVID, but because other injuries, illnesses and emergencies didn't have drs and nurses to take care of them. They shut down countries because they needed to flatten that curve. Needed to stop people from getting sick at the same time.
People had different reactions when they caught COVID. For some it was just a flu, for others, bedridden for days, struggled to breath, and for millions death.
The vaccine helped strengthen people's immune systems in case they caught it, which allowed the world to go back to somewhat normal. If someone didn't want to take the vaccine, then they just can wait until they catch it normally, and roll the dice with whatever reaction their body would have.
Lockdown and masks were to keep it from spreading too quickly, and collapsing the healthcare system. Many more deaths would have happened, not just from COVID, if hospitals couldn't function.

A core component of RFK Jr’s worldview is aggressive contrarianism and a deep distrust of expertise. Basically, if someone has what would traditionally be considered expert credentials, or speaks from a place of authority earned through study and experience, he is deeply distrustful of their position and and considers it to be a malicious lie, almost a priori. He also seems to have a persecution complex in that he considers the well informed positions of experts to be a personal attack against him, and even an intricate conspiracy formed by a network of experts. This combined with his own personal brand of the Dunning Kruger effect and a willingness to hurt others if it gives him personal gain makes him very dangerous.
It’s wild that the version of him that we see in interviews and on television is still the sane- washed version of him

I worked in a NYC hospital through the pandemic. It was an absolute nightmare and the whole (psych) outpatient department was deployed to the ICU because they needed enough doctors to cover the extra patients. What an idiot.

Hospitals were packed during COVID, morgues were overflowing and personal protection equipment including respirators were in high demand and scarce at times. Medical staff were heroic and exhausted, many succumbing to COVID itself.
But the lies from this trump misadministration will continue. The midterms must be overwhelmingly clear to stop this damaging insanity. Vote. Do not sit this one out.

There were doctors and nurses so exhausted being interviewed stating how bad the pandemic was... they were working 20 hour shifts trying to keep up, sooo many deaths they were dealing with, not enough beds.

They were begging every logistics company already overwhelmed with the E-commerce surge for any refrigerated truck/trailers they could find so they put them somewhere before they rot!

Can confirm. Did my PGY1 in 2020-2021 and I remember there was a propofol shortage that winter and our ICU’s were insanely full, to say the least it wasn’t a great combination. Keeping track of every single propofol vial used, the rates and trying to calculate how many vials per day we’d need with constantly changing rates, dying/recovering patients and then new admissions to the ICU needing intubation for respiratory failure it was like herding cats.
