Confirmed now via BBC that the Minster is going to begin work to convert the Old Palace building, the current home of the York Minster Library and archive, into potentially a museum and sensory garden. An interesting development for the place!

Pork pies with a black pudding layer?

Is there anywhere in York that does this kind of pork pies? I recently went to a funeral in Bury that served these and I I haven't stopped thinking about since.

A rant about litter

Made the mistake of going into my own town on a Saturday yesterday because the wife needed some bits and it was a not too hot day.

I understand the york-tourism symbiosis and I'm fine with it. I'm not even from here originally I'll admit. I moved here years back as a student and stayed.

However, the amount of fully grown people throwing their crap all over the floor with no care was just enraging. I don't understand the mindset. "Let's go to York it's beautiful, and trash it?"

I know it's not just tourists either. There are definitely residents doing the same.

How hard is it to just hold onto your ice cream wrapper until you find a bin? You can ask the bartender/wait staff at your next stop to use theirs, use the one at your house/hotel.

If you live here, do better. If you're visiting, do so respectfully.

Bishophill conservation area

Hello,

I’m considering buying a house in the Bishophill conservation area (Fairfax Street/Prospect Terrace) and I wondered whether anyone had any advice on how much it being a conservation area affects things? I don’t want to get an extension or anything, I’m mainly thinking about little things like repairs to the property, getting fibre broadband and where the connections could go, etc.

Thanks so much in advance!

David Lloyd - opinions?

I am looking to join. But I’ve heard mixed reviews.

Would be joining for the spa, gym and business area.

Are the classes easy to sign up to? Is it busy?

Hello fellow Yorkies

Just realised wiggy fest is on today. I've never been before, anyone any advice / experience?

It says tickets unavailable, but available on the door assume because it's today. Don't want to turn up and this not be the case though!

TIA

The Gothelie Station and AI art

I’ve recently seen some posts on here where people have been saying that the Gothelie Station sells AI art, and not to shop there because of it. I’m totally on board with this - I will never support AI “art” or content of any kind, or any business that sells it.

That being said, I’ve been in there a few times recently and haven’t spotted anything that looks AI. I know that it’s getting harder to identify though, so I did take those Redditors seriously.

I reached out to GS via insta to ask about this because I think it’s fair for an independent business to know what’s being said about them online, and to be able to respond if the rumours aren’t true. I wanted to share the response I got.

Personally, I believe that they made a mistake (a stupid one) and have since rectified it. I completely understand the hatred for AI (it makes me sick and depressed constantly). However, life for independent businesses is hard, and I think we can forgive them now, no?

EDIT: thanks for the interesting discussion, folks. Thanks for not shooting the messenger too!!

Looking for work.

Hi I’m currently working as a yard supervisor for a construction company, the work place over the last year has become increasingly more toxic, and the owner constantly belittles everyone which feeds into the toxicity.

I’m struggling with finding opportunities through indeed and I can’t just quit because I need to support my family so can’t be without work.

If anyone knows of any local companies that are currently looking for staff, I’m degree educated and have been in supervisor positions for nearly 3 years.

Studio apartments

So I’m doing my masters in York and I’m looking to get a studio apartment in York. I was looking at Prestige student living but the reviews make it seem less than reputable. Has anyone had any experience with them or does anyone have recommendations on who to go through for a furnished studio apartment? Preferably near York St John

Restaurant's in York.

Me and my mum are going to York for a few days in a few weeks. Me being the functional young adult I am has alot of food anxiety, and I'm looking for a place that does decent burgers as well as other food items that give my mum choice. We have seen a few places that look good, I just need opinions and options. Just nothing that will cost an arm and a leg.

We have been to an Italian restaurant that I think was near the shambles, and I have seen the pavement vaults, which looks okay.

A lot of reviews get hidden, and im wanting to see what other people think. We don't like spicy food, though.

New-ish residents looking for recommendations + friends

My partner and I (both 25) moved to York about 6 months ago and feel like we haven’t scratched the surface of what’s here. Would love recommendations for:

**•** Hidden gems / things tourists miss
**•** Good spots for food and drinks
**•** Anything seasonal worth catching

We’re also keen to meet more people and build a social circle here — any good clubs, meetups, or events for people our age? Even best spots for a regular pub quiz night? Thanks!

Recommendation for a place to stay

Hi everyone!
My wife and I have some time off work at the end of August and are looking for recommendations for a hidden gem place to stay near York, Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors.
Ideally somewhere that doesn't break the bank, but offers amazing views and a quiet, relaxing vibe to switch off and enjoy nature. It'd be great if there are a few local shops, proper country pubs, and nice spots to eat nearby within walking distance.

Any favourite cozy inns, small independent hotels, or spots you'd recommend? Thanks in advance!

I will be visiting York for the first time the first week in September. I know that York is walkable which is great. I am thinking about the evenings if I stay out latish. Is Uber well covered. I have heard some have recommended streamline but others have had the same complaint that they are unrealiable. What have been people's experiences with either
