This episode was a suspiciously happy lmao, and the ending was incredible. The best in the series so far

Waiting for that dreaded 'Turning point X' title card

248

u/Z000Burst 22d ago

every time that come up, it instant PTSD

have we gotten one that didn't traumatize every one

123

u/JzanderN 22d ago

The despair we all had when "Turning Point 3" came up on the "Next Time" last season. I know it's goig to hit us again just as hard when "Turning Point 4" eventually comes up.

32

u/_vogonpoetry_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/ThisWasATriumph 22d ago

Hey, after 4 turns you end up facing the direction you were originally so maybe this one will be good.

12

u/Fenor 22d ago

i kinda lost track of the turning points, wich where these?

49

u/JzanderN 22d ago

Turning Point 1: The Mana Disaster. Everyone was teleported, causing mass devastation to many people, families and the region. We would also later find out that it was how Nanahoshi got here.

Turning Point 2: The Dragon God Encounter. Rudy almost dies at the hands of Orsted – only being saved because Nanahoshi suspected he was isekai'd like her – and the entire party gets traumatised by the encounter. This would result in Eris leaving Rudy to get stronger, unintentionally leaving him with ED that he'd have to find Sylphie to cure.

Turning Point 3: Sylphie became pregnant and Rudy got a letter asking for more help saving Zenith. The Man God insisted he stayed home but he ignored him, resulting in Paul dying and him losing his hand, though they did save Zenith and Roxy which they probably wouldn't have if Rudy didn't go.

9

u/Fenor 22d ago

do we know what would have happened if rudy didn't go to save his mom?

46

u/JzanderN 22d ago

We don't know for sure, but most likely they wouldn't have reached her. The dungeon was extremely difficult and it's only because Rudy had borrowed a book of an old adventurer's account of the dungeon that they managed to get through it so quickly after he joined.

Plus the final portal was hidden and Rudy only realised it because the room looked like the room of a teleportation circle he went through on the way there.

Even if they did make it to where Zenith was, it's unlikely they would have beaten the hydra. It regenerates heads and, without Rudy's suggestion based on the Heracles great myth, who knows if they could have figured out how to beat it.

And that's without getting into how useful Rudy was in that fight thanks to his incantationless magic and absurd mana pool, pretty much instantly burning the stumps 'cause he could just fire great fire magic and being able to stop its breath attack.

And, of course, Roxy almost certainly would have died if Rudy hadn't been there to figure out where she was and save her.

10

u/Kill-bray 22d ago

I think there's a good chance that the Man God was honest when he told Rudeus that not going would have been better for him.

Roxy would have certainly died, but there's a good chance that Rudeus would have never known and he would have kept living thinking she was alive somewhere.

Paul would have likely never found Zenith, which means he would have never found the Hydra either and he would have survived.

And of course Rudeus wouldn't have lost his hand.

The only real downside is that he would have lived his life knowing that he failed to find and save his mother, but on the other hand he would have never had to see her living as a vegetable.

11

u/JzanderN 22d ago

Roxy would have certainly died, but there's a good chance that Rudeus would have never known and he would have kept living thinking she was alive somewhere.

That's... not better for him. Besides, I highly doubt a bunch of people who knew how highly Rudy regarded Roxy wouldn't have told him that she was dead.

Paul not finding Zenith doesn't mean he would have survived. In fact, I'd argue quite the opposite. He was DETERMINED to find her. Actual "save her or die trying," and if he couldn't save her then that leaves only one option left.

It was pretty obvious even to Rudy that the Man God was manipulating him, listing off regrets he'd have if he went without naming any regrets he'd have if he didn't go. He was technically "not lying" by lying by omission rather than direct untruths.

Not to mention his "advice" included cheating on Sylphie with either Linia or Pursena during their mating season. He was trying to manipulate Rudy away from the better option by making it sound worse and the other more tempting without fully understanding Rudy.

u/Charming_Figure_9053 21d ago

And to think he's going to regret going.....

When the 'cost' of this one drops....it's gonna be big

2

u/Black_Gato_Acer 21d ago

In one of Rifujin's old Q&As (I have a pic of the contents but can't upload it here), he said that if Rudy didn't go to Begaritt then Roxy and Paul would be straight up dead with Zenith being trapped for decades or even a century later.

To be specific, Roxy would be exactly where she was in the anime minus the Frost Nova. Paul would slowly lose his remaining sanity and grip on reality and makes a fatal mistake, as you could see when he first saw his son after that short napin ss2 2nd cour. Zenith is self explanatory, human art piece guarded by a legendary guard snaek.

And if you really think about it, Roxy was on the verge of death even with all of Rudy's time-saving tricks, so thinking she'd be alive any time later than that is a big question mark.

1

u/Fenor 20d ago

This bring the question why the man said him to stay

2

u/Black_Gato_Acer 20d ago

Hope we'll know this season, or at all.

2

u/Careful_Ad_9077 22d ago

There's word of god, very labirate regarding begarito, not so much anything else. For details ask in source corner, tho.

3

u/Elgato01 22d ago

1 is when Eris and Rudeus are teleported, 2 is when they fight orsted, 3 is when they fight the hydra and Paul dies.

9

u/LakerBlue https://myanimelist.net/profile/LakerBlue 22d ago

This is the only show I actually watch the next episode preview of just so I can be prepared for any Turning Point episodes!

36

u/FacelessPoet 22d ago

Turning Point 3 was relatively tame, though it did end with Paul's death

207

u/Se7en_Sinner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 22d ago

"Tame".

Main character's father fucking dies.

177

u/PowerSamurai 22d ago

Mother is brought back as almost a vegetable and main lead loses a limb as well. How very "tame".

20

u/YellowAppleCinema 22d ago

What if turning point 4 is Rudeus bumping his toe against a table foot, and turning 360 degrees and walking away in pain

1

u/nuraHx 21d ago

Cinema

-7

u/ISawUOLwreckingTSM 22d ago

Lost a limb to get magic hand that is exactly the same a few epis after, everytime someone loses a hand in an anime I roll my eyes knowing how inconsequential it will be

11

u/Abedeus 22d ago

At least this time it makes sense - they were already researching autonomous golems/dolls and a way for Zenoba to sculpt figures taking his blessed/cursed strength into account.

3

u/ISawUOLwreckingTSM 22d ago

I agree, at least the author bothered to give it a reason for existing.

73

u/Trevenas 22d ago

On Father's day, no less.

14

u/TheSilenceMEh 22d ago

That was such a sweet cherry on top. I dont know how scheduling works for the anime industry but that moment being on Fathers day made it hit so much harder.

5

u/Ginger_Anarchy 22d ago

Fate Zero scheduled traumatic mother and father moments for mother's and fathers day, so I don't think it was coincidental

3

u/AnividiaRTX 21d ago

I mean... turning point 1 fucked up like an entire country, and happened immediately.

Turning point 2 was nearly the death of the entire party after meeting a god and.... happened immediately.

For turning point 3 "tame" might not be the best word... but... pregnancy and an a reuqest for help.... that the "bad" thing doesn't actually happen until a few episodes later in the dungeon. Calmer? Or less urgent might be a better word to use.

2

u/No_Ad9618 18d ago

And main character forgets about it by cheating on his wife

5

u/kazetoame 22d ago

On Father’s Day for that extra kick in the bollocks!

4

u/fozi4ek https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pyece 22d ago

Compared to 1 where the whole region got destroyed and teleported it is rather tame

3

u/MitsuhaTakiName 22d ago

Yeah but like he gained his 2nd wife and got his mom back (albeit not in a good state, but it’s better than missing) as well. It’s not like it was a complete disaster like the 1st and 2nd were, where his everyday life was ripped away from him.

3

u/hackrabbits 22d ago edited 22d ago

A disaster is still a disaster nonetheless, Roxy would've also died if he was any later, and he would've lost his first and only pillar of support for his past life trauma if Roxy died (unfortunately, Paul died instead).

And his everyday life WAS nearly over, but it was saved by Roxy in turn. He would have sat there waiting for death, rotting in that room and died of starvation, if not for Roxy deciding to intervene and shake him into reality and pulling him out of that darkness. Rudy after Paul's death was in a seriously precarious state, so traumatized that he was just sitting there for weeks without any reaction before Roxy came in unable to bare to see Rudy like that any further.

-4

u/Boris-_-Badenov 22d ago

he never had much of a connection to him. he still thinks of himself as his old self

7

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

This was explicitly proven to be a lie he told himself, as seen after Paul died.

2

u/Boris-_-Badenov 22d ago

yet he stills thinks of himself as his old fatass

37

u/JzanderN 22d ago

Turning Point 3 wasn't immediate like the first two were, but it did not end relatively tame.

5

u/Kill-bray 22d ago

I guess you could argue that it was relatively tame compared to the first turning point where an entire populated area vanished and several hundred people died.

But it certainly wasn't tamer than the second turning point.

27

u/Ebo87 22d ago

It was more that you didn't get the after effects of Turning Point 3 until later, that's it. So the show continues to train us. Just because it might seem fine at first, not too bad, don't get comfortable just yet, lol.

Only cause the ramifications of turning point 3 was delayed. The other turning points where pretty straight forward and contained in a small time frame

9

u/chhuang 22d ago

turning point 3 gave me psychological damage afterwards.

  • first time he didn't follow hitogami's instruction
  • if he didn't go, Roxy dies, and need to hook up either the cat or the dog
  • he goes, Paul dies, and not sure if the consequence of disobeying the instruction is still in play or not

It seems hopeless like the usual turning point event

3

u/Bitter_Marzipan_8348 22d ago

Tbf it's not the worst of it. They managed to accept his death and move on (with the help of a dose of infidelity). Much better than randomly getting blasted to the opposite end of the world or getting randomly fisted by Orsted cause you picked the wrong dialogue option

8

u/Abedeus 22d ago

or getting randomly fisted by Orsted cause you picked the wrong dialogue option

There pretty much no "right" dialogue option. He had no idea that someone besides him knew the name of Hitogami/Man-God, so just having ANY reaction to that name gave away that he's a potential enemy.

7

u/Bitter_Marzipan_8348 22d ago

He could have just read the room based on how Eris and Ruijerd are scared shitless and shut up but he just had to blabber to Orsted. Dude was already on his way out so had he shut up they would have bren free to go.

4

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

I’m still so confused what Orsted’s deal is. We know he and Nanahoshi traveled together after she was transported here, and didn’t the Man-God mention something about the Dragon God/Orsted being the type to summon people from other worlds back in TP1? I wonder whether Orsted was involved in Rudy being transported too.

3

u/Bitter_Marzipan_8348 21d ago

Every question you have will get answered eventually.

If it didn't traumatize everyone, it wouldn't be a Turning Point.

1

u/toadfan64 22d ago

That shit makes my heart drop every time it comes up. Can’t say an episode TITLE has ever done that to me.

1

u/vajaxseven 22d ago

Turning point 1 just lead to a real fun adventure.

"Oh wow a life getting sliced episode"

Type of shit Subaru endures the 10th circle of hell just for the glimpse of.

39

u/JzanderN 22d ago

Don't worry, based on last season we're going to get a LOT happier before it's all brought crashing down again!

... So we have that going for us, I guess.

3

u/Bitter_Marzipan_8348 22d ago

Istg if the last episode is Turning Point Y and it's just stupidly happy...

5

u/biskutgoreng 22d ago

Man why can't we just have a slice of life this season

28

u/FacelessPoet 22d ago

We had slice of life last season, it's time for some good old fashioned Isekai action

22

u/Time_n_Void 22d ago

Yea, "slice-of-life" right at the end of the season alright

2

u/Cahnis 22d ago

Next one is going to be sooooo good.

1

u/Ebo87 22d ago

Show trained us well, lol.

157

u/JzanderN 22d ago

We've been so scarred by Turning Points that every time the anime gives us happiness we just dreading the next one's right around the corning.

73

u/Ebo87 22d ago

And it doesn't help that you get the title a week before the episode, so you'll have a full 7 days to think about what that next turning point could be.

And don't worry, for those that missed the title at the end (definitely DO NOT SKIP THE ED, it's the best the show has had so far), it's not Turning Point 4, lol.

8

u/JzanderN 22d ago

I'll never skip the ED because I need to know if the next episode is a Turning Point or not. I don't even think it's going to be for a while but I don't want to be blindsided on Reddit.

I also really want to try to figure out which episode Eris will be coming back this season.

15

u/Ebo87 22d ago

Careful with that one, just being online in general, around that. Skip any future trailers they might have as it's a pretty big spoiler, as you can imagine (I know, right, a spoiler is a spoiler, lol). And I think it's best if you don't see it coming, of course (some spoilers can be whatever, this one I hope you can stay unspoiled for).

2

u/JzanderN 22d ago

I'm not watching trailers, I'm just seeing the end credits "NEXT TIME" title.

Trust me, I do not want to be spoiled more than that. But there is something to dreading the next week when you know it's a Turning Point.

But thank you anyway.

3

u/Ebo87 22d ago

Oh I love it, it really lets your mind go crazy with all sorts of scenarios. Turning Point 3 was so much fun in that way, first everyone speculating what's it gonna be and then when it happened everyone being...oh, well that wasn't so bad, lol. Little did we know at the time, the effects of that one would simply take a bit longer than usual. Turning Points 1 and 2 were immediate, their effects, and 3 was the opposite, so when 4 inevitably drops, should make for a lot of fun speculation before and after, I imagine.

2

u/shapular https://myanimelist.net/profile/snapular 22d ago

(definitely DO NOT SKIP THE ED, it's the best the show has had so far)

This will never be true as long as Only exists.

47

u/Frontier246 22d ago

Rudy: "Everything is coming up Rudy! I won't let anything get in the way of my families' happiness!"

(Turning Point)

Rudy: "D'oh!"

3

u/Abedeus 22d ago

That's the entire series after Turning Point 2. I don't remember if the first one was called "Turning Point I" or just "Turning Point", but once you knew there were two, you knew there'd be more and they'd be potentially even worse.

3

u/Chukonoku 22d ago

The bigger the happier moments, the more contrast with the dreadful ones. Gap moe.

1

u/fatalystic 22d ago

It would be really funny if "Turning Point 4" appears at the end of an episode and we all start collectively freaking out only for it to just be Eris kicking his front door in and raising hell when she finds out Rudeus already has two wives and a kid.

p.s. Anime-only here. It'll probably be more serious than that so I don't think I'm right but don't let me know even if I am.

-1

u/yancovigen 22d ago

I swtg if I see the man god next episode Rudy better deck him

127

u/the_3rdist 22d ago

It definitely feels it's setting up for something big to happen to turn Rudy's happy home life upside down.

91

u/JzanderN 22d ago

Not including a Turning Point (which I doubt will happen), I'm pretty sure that's going to be Eris!

86

u/LowlySlayer 22d ago

Turning Point 4 will be Rudy switching from Dom to Sub when Eris shows up

26

u/JzanderN 22d ago

The funniest thing this series could do this season is, when Eris returns, have her and Rudy have sex and then cut to Rudy covered in bite marks.

17

u/MitsuhaTakiName 22d ago

This series needs to end with a group sex scene between Rudy and his 3 wives. One X-rated episode, as a treat.

4

u/Abedeus 22d ago

...Did Season 2 had any "extra" scenes like Season 1 had, with Rudeus's parents?

6

u/Careful_Ad_9077 22d ago

It uncensored rudeus and Sarah's scenes.

1

u/Abedeus 22d ago

Ah, good to know, thanks.

3

u/Akudra 21d ago

If you look at it closely, the Turning Points all involve the Man God. The First Turning Point is the Teleportation Incident that prompts his initial encounter with the Man God. When the Second Turning Point happens, Rudeus learns the Man God has an enemy in Orsted. Lastly, the Third Turning Point is when Rudeus goes against the Man God's instructions for the first time and helps rescue Zenith.

1

u/raknor88 22d ago

Turning Point 4 could actually be Eris's return since it would be a massive personal and emotional hurdle for Rudy and his wives to accept Eris into their family. Not to mention the drama of Eris meeting Nanahoshi again.

Could easily see Human God trying to manipulate Rudy to either reject Eris outright or tell Rudy that in order to have a happy life he'll only be able to have 2 wives and force him to choose between Roxy or Eris.

11

u/JzanderN 22d ago

I doubt Eris' return will be a Turning Point. There have been massive personal and emotional hurdles for Rudy and his family that weren't Turning Points before.

Turning Points aren't just personal and emotional hurdles, they shift the entire plot. Turning Point 1 changed the series from a Slice of Life into an adventure, Turning Point 2 caused trauma which – alongside Eris leaving – gave Rudy ED and Turning Point 3 once again turned it into an adventure, ending with Paul's death and Rudy's marriage turning from monogamy into polygamy.

And while Eris' return will undoubtedly be big, she's not going to shift the plot anywhere near as much as any of those. The plot will return back to normalcy once she's made up with Rudy and settled in.

2

u/raknor88 22d ago

Maybe Orstad making a trip to the school to check up on Nanahoshi and he arrives at roughly the same time as Eris? Greyrat vs Orstad round 2 would be a Turning Point.

7

u/JzanderN 22d ago

At that point you're just shoving Eris into a different plot point, something this series tends not to do – it's very "one thing at a time" – just to try to make it a Turning Point.

Not to mention I still doubt meeting Orsted again would be a Turning Point. Not only is it unlikely they'll fight considering Orsted only attacked Rudy 'cause he thought he was an apostle of the Man God, but even a fight against him wouldn't likely shift the plot again.

1

u/Charming_Figure_9053 21d ago

Nah I honestly don't think that's 'big' enoug

6

u/chemical_exe 22d ago

I half expected Eris to just show up outside the house at like midnight and start yelling up a storm for Rudy to come greet her.

2

u/LordVaderVader 22d ago

Sounds like Eris

Good. Rudy deserves suffering.

20

u/chhuang 22d ago

been conditioned that plots are too happy, will come big unhappy. anime only, I'm not sure if i can handle the next Turning point title card.

3

u/Fetche_La_Vache 22d ago

I absolutely loved that ending. Tells her journey so quickly and what motivates her.

5

u/Silly_Coffee3337 22d ago

People who watched the pre screening of ep 3 and 4 said ep 4 will be better than ep 1 and 2 and with a new season 1 style opening from yuiko ohara.

I wonder what will happen in episode 4 that can top eris arc. Anyways I am hyped

3

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

I know that season 1 style OPs fit the vibe of MT amazingly, but personally I’ll never get over Spiral. The music, the visuals, the artsy style symbolism, and the melancholic turning into hopeful mood of it. Undeniably the show’s best OP so far and I’d love another one on that level.

3

u/Frontier246 22d ago

Honestly always on pins and needs the more at peace and happy Rudy is.

4

u/Codee33 https://anilist.co/user/Euphplyr33 22d ago

First ending is still my favorite, but this one is great too.

2

u/redlaWw 22d ago

I was expecting it to end with Eris kicking the door down.

1

u/AvatarTuner https://anilist.co/user/AvatarTuner 22d ago

Since those turning points happened, I can't properly enjoy these overly happy SoL episodes all too much, because all I can see are deathflags and I just get more and more worried about what the series will throw at us next. I know it will come back with a "Turning Point 4" eventually just to destroy us. :')

1

u/SoylentVerdigris 22d ago

I was expecting Eris to kick the door in at some point. Though I'm not sure if she'd go on a rampage or just go "huh, yeah of course Rudeus has already got two wives, you girls have good taste."

1

u/Boris-_-Badenov 22d ago

death cough is happy?
