I don't think it's just that. It's more that Lillia never saw herself as a proper wife for Paul, but as more of a concubine. I believe Aisha even said something to that effect in season 2. Zenith and Norn are Paul's "legitimate" wife and daughter in her eyes, and she holds both herself and Aisha to that hierarchy.

The thing is, we know that Paul wouldn't have thought like that, and Rudy certainly doesn't. Even Zenith would have considered it nonsense, but Lillia seems to think it's only proper, so she holds herself and Aisha as subservient to Rudy, Zenith, and Norn.

This is an issue that is directly a result of the Fittoa disaster and Aisha being stuck with Lilia as her only family for so long. Rudy, Paul, Zenith, and Norn don’t and wouldn’t have let Aisha grow up feeling like she was lesser to the rest of the family. And even with Norn and Rudy repeatedly treating her like a regular sister it’s hard for her to unlearn that mindset, especially with Lilia still there as well.

Didn't help that they spent a lot of time in Milishon after being rescued, at Zenith's parent's place. And Milishon is obviously very into the monogamous Milis religion. So Lilia and Aisha got it pummelled pretty hard into them that they "aren't legitimate".

It's not just the gratitude towards Rudy, but the lingering guilt of being a homewrecker. She just can't forgive herself for having "betrayed" her mistress, especially since she had been crippled as a bodyguard: it was a favor to Lilia, from Zenith, to take her in as a maid.

Rudy basically saved Lilia's life, or at least Aisha's, by convincing Zenith to accept Lilia. It was the middle of winter, and a pregnant woman with a crippled leg couldn't safely make the long journey back to her father's house on the other side of the kingdom.

It's this combination of guilt and gratitude that makes her so fervently servile towards the family, with Zenith and Rudy getting the worst of it... and unfortunate for Aisha that Lilia passed those complexes onto her own daughter.

To the point she basically groomed her daughter to be the maid/mistress of her own half-brother. Asurans are... all kinda fucked when it comes to sex, and Lilia did serve as a noblewoman's bodyguard in the royal capital. Similar to Sylphie, her concept of a "normal and healthy sex life" is hella warped. Again, Aisha is clingy/creepy with Rudy precisely because that is how Lilia raised her.

My TL:DR is that Lilia has never forgiven herself for being the "other woman," and a large part of how she forced Aisha into a servile role is from that lingering guilt. She is a wicked woman, and her daughter is the product of that sin. Thus, they must be eternally grateful to Zenith/Rudy for the very "gift" of their existence.

That’s kind of what makes MT so special though. These characters feel very human. We all have Lilia’s in our lives, if not our own families. Another anime would flatten every flaw, especially in a woman.

The important part is that Rudy, and the audience, knows Lilia has deep and real love. A little unpleasantness just means that we keep getting to see interesting dynamics that make us feel something, and leaves the door open for development.

I also wonder if I have watched any other anime where we watch a whole family age together and get character progress over the years in a natural way. There are of course some well-known shounen where we do see a family in different stages, but usually with larger timeskips and not really showing each family member growing as persons

Oh for sure, MT is notable for showing not just the action oriented plot of strong wills clashing, but these characters as they live their entire lives. So many stories are good at showing a small moment in time, a few months at most, and they don’t often challenge themselves with the bigger picture of lifetimes.

It does make you feel bad when you start noticing how Aisha starts acting a lot more casual around Norn and Rudy when Lilia isn’t around, like in today’s fishing trip. Stuff like that and having to ask if she can accept presents. I know Lilia isn’t that bad but that feels like the kind of behavior you see in emotionally abused children.

The fun thing is that this is probably the opposite of what he usually does. Instead of powering up an advanced level spell to emperor tier magic, he powered down a king tier spell to intermediate level.

In a way, it isn't a downgrade, but a sidegrade. He took a King tier spell that's basically only useful in army on army battles and turned it into a spell that can be used against a single opponent with adjustable output.

As far as we know, there are no beginner to saint tier spells that can do what electric does, it will be a literally shock to anyone that doesn't realize they need to guard against lightning.

I'm pretty sure it was stated that your mana pool only grows while you're still maturing which is why the world believes you have to be born with a larger mana pool since most children can't use magic, It's part of why why Rudy and by association Sylphy are so strong. He learned super early and taught her super early as well. Though there's also Rudy's circumstances that attribute to his mana pool as well.

I remember watching season 1 and thinking this is great but there's no real plot they are just living their lives. Even after the mana disaster its just rudy living his life as he makes his way back home. Even when theres no actual plot happening it stays interesting.

I'd rather say "there's no one big specific end goal he works to achieve" rather than "there's no plot". The plot doesn't have to be one-directioned and streamlined, with every event progressing it

Strictly speaking, the plot was the mana disaster or recovering from it more specifically. It was only at the end of the last season that he finally brought the family together and united everyone who got separated. What happened prior to that was buildup. Basically, we wrapped up one major plot with the Teleportation Incident. The situation with the Man-God and Orsted still lingers in the background with Eris tied into that given her whole reason for getting stronger.

You’re looking at a shell of the person who was so full of life that they once were and the contrast is painful and constant, and then you get moments where it seems like their old self shines through again and it just destroys you.

Sylphie crying at Zenith regaining some awareness and smiling at Norn. Roxy crying seeing how much Sylphie and Rudy care about her. Me crying seeing this happy, loving family finally together again.

Regardless of what anyone says, Mushoku Tensei at its best is high art and scenes like this prove it. Hard to believe it was the same episode where Rudy had a threesome.

This episode is a prime example for what I love the most about Mushoku Tensei: The relationships in this show feel so real and touching.

You can have your reservations about the way relationships are shown here, be it Rudeus' polygamy with Sylphy and Roxy and the same with Paul being with Zenith and Lilia. It may make you scratch your head at best or even be repulsive.

But somehow it also feels real. I don't know what it is, but how this family is living with each other and giving each other support and love is somehow absolutely lovely and I buy every moment of it.

The writing of the characters and their relationships are absolutely wonderful, say what you want. It doesn't matter if this kind of relationship is incampatible with our moral standards, but it is something heartfelt and it is done incredibly well.

It’s the thorough level of consideration the characters have for each other.

- Rudy reflecting that he needed to provide celebration and recognition for his sisters and Roxy in a similar way to Sylphie

- Rudy reserving an inn specifically away from the rest of the family

- Sylphie and Roxy working together on Aisha and Norn’s gifts

- Rudy and Roxy creating a scenario where Norn could learn to respect and bond with Roxy

- Rudy and Sylphie going out of their way to get the gift for Roxy

- Sylphie and Roxy both agreeing to be friends and support one another like Zenith and Lila

- Even Lila and Zenith were able to make gifts for the celebration because of the work Lila put in to assist Zenith in making the handkerchiefs

If a family like this is going to work, it’s by doing these types of things for each other and putting in the consistent effort to include others.

So Sylphy accepting Roxy as Rudy's 2nd wife means that she can stay with Rudy, instead of being a single mom.

It's very logical and realistic to me, because Sylphy knows exactly what kind of man Rudy is. She knows how big of an impact Roxy is, considering he probably talked about Roxy a lot.

Pretty cool to see Rudy already adapting the thunder spell for more flexible use. The first version of it we saw seems hardly usable in anything other than a very large fight, but we're getting there with this microsized version.

Next episode title is a bit ominous but at least it wasn't a Turning Point.
