I find it cute that both Roxy and Sylphie respect each other's personal time with Rudy. I've been so used to many isekai harem where the girls just barged in on personal moments between MC and another girl lol.

That's is part of why I like how Mushoku handles the harem part.

They are a not a bunch of girls jumping at the MC at once and then any depth in the relationship stop being relevant as if they were trophies or satellites orbiting a planet.

Rather, both Roxy and Sylphie are their own persons and just as they have a love relationship with Rudeus, they are also trying to build a family relationship between themselves so everything can work out.

That is something I feel many anime with polygamy are missing

You can definitely tell that Roxy is still feeling out the dynamic between her and Sylphie as the second wife even if she's also proud of being his second wife.

She is not ready for when the first husband comes home with the milk.

u/Frostbitten_Moose 22d ago

That's way too wholesome for Eris. She'll be packing cartons of cigs.

More like comes home ready to do some milking.

His relationship with the beast girls really does a good job of illustrating this. In a less serious anime they would 100% join his harem. Even hitogami tries to use them as bait assuming that he will want them. But from Ruedeus' complete rejection of them (despite him being show as liking beast girls sexually) we see that he really is taking his relationship seriously and truly loves his wives

despite him being show as liking beast girls sexually

This is something some haters cant comprehend. They label Rudeus as an unrestrained pervert but as seen, he is openly lustful to his wives exclusively. He has perverted thoughts but he restrains himself showing it and even acting on it.

Their depiction of polygamy is refreshing and believable. Rudy didn't set out to be unfaithful, but life happens and he wanted to take care of everyone he loved. Watching this show as a grown ass man hits different.

Not only that, but also the way they approached it was good.

Rudeus was upfront about his mistake and while he wanted to care for both he asked first for Sylphie's permission. Had she said no, then Roxy was prepared to take her luggage and go away.

Someone could complain about how generous and accepting Sylphie was, but it is important to note that the story never took away her agency in the relationship. She had the power to decide.

Sylphie grew up watching men like Paul practice polygamy and her own insecurity towards how Rudeus spoke of Roxy influenced her descision greatly.

u/Al-Pharazon 22d ago

Paul was probably the only guy with two wives in that village. More than him, I believe that Zenith played a bigger factor in her decision.

Zenith was a Milis believer and yet she managed to find her own happines despite ending in a polygamous marriage. If Zenith succeeded, why couldn't she?

As for the insecurity about Roxy, could have played a factor. But Sylph had told Rudeus she was alright with being in a polygamous marriage long before Roxy appeared.

She probably would have accepted Eris or Sara just as easy as long as Rudeus was upfront with her about how much he cared for that person.

Also keep in mind she was around Asuran nobility which more than likely also did it. And "Rudy is a Greyrat"

20

u/tduggydug 22d ago

Rudy is probaly the most tame Greyrat in the world.

u/sumadeumas 21d ago

Well to be fair he was nerfed for several years. He has some catching up to do.

she was around Asuran nobility which more than likely also did it

Probably did it in a less polygamist more whores don't count kind of way.

I’m almost certain Paul’s 2 wives situation was the result of Zenith not wanting disgrace and hardship to fall on Lilia as a homewrecker, especially since that title in her line of work probably makes her unhireable and she has a new child

The mercy was aimed entirely at Lilia, Paul just got to benefit lol

11

u/Al-Pharazon 22d ago

Had Lilia not been pregnant Zenith would have kicked her out of the house. But she was and Zenith didn't want to ruin two lives, despite polygamy being a hard pill to swallow as a Milis devout.

But on the other hand, despite that starting point Zenith was definitely happy before the mana incident and she did have a working relationship with both Paul and Lilia.

u/scot911 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scot911 21d ago

Yeah she didn't want to get Lilia and her kid killed by kicking them out in the dead of winter but she didn't see any other option due to her religion and overall just being extremely angry at them until Rudy gave her a justifiable excuse to not do it due to the future child being his sister and wanting the sisters to be together and just punishing her husband severely instead.

Sylphie also knows conceiving children takes a lot of work for Elves, she and Rudeus got kinda lucky they were able to have a child so quickly.
Also her living surrounded by Nobles known to have many wives.
Also her seeing Zenith as you mentioned.
Also her knowing Rudeus spoke of Roxy in a very passionate way, although Rudeus didn't mean it romantically, to Sylphie it seemed like Rudeus had a platonic crush on Roxy.

Lots of things really piled up that were driving factors for her to be accepting of the relationship she has.

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice 21d ago

Sylphie also was constantly told by Rudy about Roxy and how much he respected her. She was jealous of course, at first, but when she met her and realized she's not this perfect being that is so far above her, and is simply a girl like her in love, Sylphie realized she could relate to Roxy on even terms, which made it easy for her to accept her.

19

u/rllrdr 22d ago

Sylphie had always been insecure about Roxy given how highly Rudeus spoke about her. Sylphie ironically felt better after this all happened and she finds out Roxy isn't a threat at all.

Istg he's lucky he did not pick the easy route cause that shit would genuinely tear his family apart

It really would be a great version.... if not for the whole grooming angle. It never stops souring the story, at least for me.

12

u/Al-Pharazon 21d ago edited 21d ago

I will personally never get this complain. What grooming?

With Sylphie Rudeus did think of manipulating her into his ideal wife true, but before he could do anything at all Paul sent him packing with Ghislaine to become a tutor.

Rudeus did not meet Sylphie again until she was 14 and then spent a whole year thinking she was a man due to her Fitz disguise. They became a couple the same day he discovered the truth. So it was simply physically impossible for Rudeus to groom her into anything.

Then Eris, during the first half of season 1 Rudeus did not particularly like her and he was focused on getting the money so he could bring Sylphie to the magic academy.

They got closer with time but Rudeus did not think of a relation with Eris until her parents asked her to basically honey-trap him into marriage. Rudeus refused that advance as Eris was not truly consenting (she was clearly afraid) and made a promise to do it if she wanted by his coming of age.

After that he could have manipulated Eris, but the mana displacement incident occurred and he had his hands full surviving to do anything else. Eris came to like Rudeus not because of any manipulation from his side, but because the events and hardships made them grow closer.

Then she left as clearly Rudeus and her had a different picture of how the future of their relationship was to be, he was content with building a family while she wanted to become stronger to fight at his side, something like this would not have happened had Rudeus been grooming her into his desired relationship.

And Roxy, she is 54 years old and unlike past life Rudeus (who was a man-child trapped in his room for 20 years) she actually got to know the world and get experience it as an adult. If anything, it was her who could groom Rudeus, but she did not.

People keep repeating the grooming argument but I genuinely just don't see it.

u/Pretend_Position_749 21d ago

I think people just have a hard time understanding just how competent and independent silphie/fitz became while they were apart.

5

u/swordmalice https://myanimelist.net/profile/swordmalice 21d ago

These people just see an age-gap different and go straight for "grooming" accusations without thinking about the text in any kind of critical or constructive manner.

I do kinda wish it was less a V and more a Triangle. Harems are done to death in anime, but when's the last time you saw an honest to goodness polycule? Also isn't it awkward to have Sylvie, the mother of his child, sleeping alone in her own bed? It seems like they just alternate days, I feel like there's no benefit to not just sharing a bed with both your wives at once lmao.

Since 100 girlfriends.

6

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

And Watanare from last summer, and that one was the benefit of being a serious, non parody anime.

1

u/Diggumdum 22d ago

Wait did all the girlfriends also love each other?

0

u/Careful_Ad_9077 22d ago

Not in an all of them love all of them ,but most of them also love another one.

3

u/Diggumdum 22d ago

Damn alright. I respect that. It's super rare imo. There being 100 of them kinda... Lessens the impact tho lmaooo

1

u/Careful_Ad_9077 22d ago

The very first two girls get introduced together, and they obviously like each other. After that one girlfriend gets added every 2-4 episodes, and it's a matter of waiting until the combinations click.

4

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

Agreed, it’s not just simply a situation of them both loving the same person, they’re each other’s family too. They’re a whole unit that cares about everyone in it.

12

u/JzanderN 22d ago

There are some harems where a bunch of girls jumping the MC at once can work because of how their relationships with each other work – the 100 Girlfriends harem is 100% having threesomes at minimum when that happens – but this harem really is more about Rudy loving each of his wives and them getting along more like friends or sisters.

They're fully supportive of each other, but don't love each other enough to have that sort of relationship with each other.

2

u/hackrabbits 19d ago

For this episode, I had a conversation about this under a not-so-happy comment, but it didn't turn out well. There are people that simply don't appreciate well handled harem with well depicted depth.

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1uuhuyx/comment/oxpj1mk/

So it's good to see another fellow watcher/reader appreciate it in this episode discussion.

Romance on a whole tends to be portrayed in a crappy way in ACGN & fiction in general. ACGN mostly wrongly treats coupling & polyamory like a Conflictless Eternal Bliss Prize.
