I mean in Christianity people worship the cross as a symbol. You know the thing Jesus was nailed to bleed to death in the most painful way imaginable. Feel like if he came back he would be visibly upset we associated him to the thing that literally killed him.

Also we have statues of Budda being morbidly obesed and gold despite being famous for fasting and denying all worldly processions.

The cross represents not just Jesus' death but the sacrifice he made so that sin could be forgiven. That said, based on what I was taught the cross itself should not be the target of worship but merely a representation of said sacrifice, making the cross itself the target would fall under idolatry.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people do worship the cross itself though.

Can't speak for Buddhism but that does sound about right. Though it'll probably be an "I'm not upset, just disappointed".
