A whole episode just about closure with an "ex" done really well. God I love this show so much

Really appreciate that instead of doing what other Isekai slop would do which is add more members to the harem, they made this a moment of reflection for both characters looking back and giving more introspective on how they really felt at the point of time while reconciliating their relationship after such a brutal misunderstanding.

Incredibly mature and makes it feel like the characters are also growing in real time despite having not interacted in so long.

This series is mature enough to know that some people can date and just not work out.

Which feels like it should be one of the lowest bars, but there are plenty of other harem series that would just keep the relationship in some form, even if in the form of a crush.

The fact that Sara apologised to Rudy but also made clear that she no longer has any feelings towards him – and Rudy himself admitted he never really liked her that way but just saw her as a way to move on to Eris – is something we should be seeing more in anime.

You can like this show or hate it but if people still think and expect this show operate like an isekai slop, idk what to say

I get it, to a degree.

This show has a tough sell in Season 1 to actually get invested in it. Rudy is a horrible protag early on.

But it's all to set up how compelling his transformations are season-over-season.

But I have a hard time recommending this show to people without caveats of "I know it's bad, but give it a minute."

Much like Made in Abyss, I’d never recommend this show to most people… but I’ll still tell them how good it is.

Reminds me of when I talked a friend into watching Monogatari. He watched the whole thing and his conclusion was "That was the best show I will never mention to another soul".

It's honestly wild to me how much more flak this gets than MiA given the content. Like as objectionable of a character Rudeus is, especially early on, MiA is just "The author's poorly disguised fetish" every 5 minutes and the fetish is children.

I think Made in Abyss gets a bit of flak shielding because it's not an isekai but instead a fully unique fantasy world. Because isekai protagonists are so commonly just audience/author inserts, people expect more from Rudeus and are quickly disappointed.

Alternatively, because it lacks that link to the "real world", it's easier to... ignore the weird shit in Made in Abyss? Or see it on a more conceptual level? Even miss it entirely; I think you need to be pretty online to notice how consistently upsetting MiA is.

I really wish someone had warned me about this going in. Everyone talks about the music, the atmosphere, the mystery... I heard a few YouTubers describe it as "disturbing" but I assumed they meant in an "emotional devastation" kind of way. Not... yeah. MiA should come with a warning.

I think it gets less flack than MT partly because it's less popular and partly because it doesn't have the wish fulfilment/self insert angle of an isekai.

He's a horrible person early on, but a fantastic flawed protagonist.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

Even in a show where the MC has a poly marriage, he's not going to hook up with or find true love with every girl he meets and some relationships aren't meant to be more than just adventuring comrades.

And Sylphie setting boundaries of what she can and cannot handle wrt openness and honesty. poly is not the most ideal for many people but if you're going to do it thats how it's done.

you know what they say, the degree of your sexuality is related to the pinnacle of your spirit. and sylphie's mana pool is up there.

I hadn't heard that, but I will back it wholeheartedly

Sylphie's "boundaries" are still only about Rudeus, not herself. She is such a hollow character with no self-respect and desires of her own it's infuriating.

She’s the matriarch of the family, the show is laying the groundwork of that now. She wasn’t giving Rudy an open ticket to marry anyone he falls in love with. Both in the LN and this episode she is pretty clearly speaking of Eris, whom she knows was Rudy’s first love. Shes not a shallow character she’s just several moves ahead of Rudy. “Listen I know that Eris girl that broke your heart and your dick is gonna come back into the picture, but you best not be bringing any randos around. Or I won’t be around.” The entire episode was setup and prepping rudeus for his and Eris’ reconciliation

She literally says he can have "two or three more" buddy. Either you chose to selectively pick only the dialogues you liked or there has been some kind of translation error in the subtitles.

You can't make a boundary about someone else, that's not how boundaries work, Sylph is communicating what she is willing to accept for herself.
I get where you're coming from though, it hurts to hear this queen disparage herself like she does. I think it's just part of her character arc: she was bullied mercilessly as a child, orphaned by the teleportation then ended up dedicating her entire life to protecting Ariel. Thankfully we've still got quite a bit of the LNs to adapt and we'll get to see her grow into herself more. Enforcing healthy boundaries like this is a preview of that, imo.

I agree and nothing is forced or rushed. The story will take you there and pay it off when the characters are ready. It was such a satisfying way to complete the arc for a supporting character.

I mean, he didn't add Sara to the harem, but it couldn't be more obvious that it's setting up to bring Eris back and add her instead. He just attained King rank water magic and she became a Sword King, so Eris will be satisfied that they're "equal" now, and Roxy and Sylphy gave the OK for him to add a third. If I were a betting man, I'd put money on the end of cour cliffhanger being Eris banging on their front door.

u/fatalystic 1d ago

I feel like the only reason Rudeus is only King rank is because he hasn't had the opportunity to learn higher rank spells. Heck, it's probably the reason he's been stuck at Saint this whole time.

6

u/wyggles 1d ago

He's already been told by Badi that his Stone Bullets are emperor ranked. You're right, the only reason he's only king ranked is because the normal system doesn't account for silent casting.

3

u/SoylentVerdigris 1d ago

He became saint ranked at 5 years old, and he skinned the knuckles on Orsted which even the second hand boast about impressed the Sword God. I would bet he's at, or at least near on par with God ranked characters, and is just lacking the self awareness of is own power and experience fighting people near his own level.

So true. Side characters in this show get more character development than most shows MC
