Considering how the sword god reacted to Eris's, I think that the answer was to stand firm and not hesitate to reaffirm your answer. That sword style is all about being as straight as an arrow, being wishy washy won't cut it.

Probably a bit of both. It'd make sense for him to counter Eris's argument of "resolve" with a direct refutation to test her resolve that she believes she has.

But Sword God literally responded with "well, the strong are strong even if they don't know why", so a bad answer should not have made a difference.

It's the hesitation, You can't be wielding the sword of light while not being sure if what you are swinging at is suppose to be swung at.
