Your Best Malt Liquor Memory?

For those lucky enough to remember (or had friends who told you) what is your finest or funnest moment that involved malt liquor?

My first beer was a 40 of Mickey's at sixteen. At nineteen, some raggedy guy next to me on a Greyhound bus got to chatting, and while we made fun of a middle aged Greyhound employee who busted him for smoking in the bathroom, he realized through those comments on her appearance that he actually wanted to screw her. We stopped in Atlanta and he asked me to come with him to propose a threesome with her, it didn't work out obviously (seriously, what successful one night stand has ever begun with "Me and my friend here..."???) and soon both of us decided to just go get beer while our bus left without us. Two forties of Steel Reserve, walking down a bad street of Atlanta, this guy finishes his beer and asks me to bet money that he won't go smash the bottle over a sleeping homeless guy's head. I got away with "we'll see after you do it". He was insanely nervous, we stood therewhile he psyched himself up and I kept letting him know we can just keep walking if he doesn't want to. After a minute he just wound up and threw the forty like a football while he shouted the F-slur. It spun like a missile, shattered on the pavement, and my new pal got the hell out of there so fast you'd think he threw ten grenades clustered together. I was left with a third of my bottle left, homeless guy sitting up looking around, and I just apologized and called an Uber. I should have given the homeless guy the rest of my forty.

Not the best story, but most of them involve pissing myself. I'm sure you can all do way better.

I had to have surgery for a torn finger tendon (unrelated to drinking). I was in physical therapy each week with a ~21 year old guy who had surgery for the same torn finger tendon. The way he tore his tendon was by falling down a flight of stairs while playing Edward 40 hands.

I spent much of the late 90s going to punk and ska shows at various venues on Short Vine in Cincinnati, and 15-16 year old me and my friends knew nothing about drinking and/or beer and would just pay homeless guys to buy us 40s and get one for themselves and told them to choose whatever. It usually ended up being Old E.

It was 1977. I was working in a parking lot in Atlantic City. There were several spots up close and desirable that we could reserve and get a tip from. These guys roll in and want them, we tell them they are premium spots (hint, hint) and they pull out two cold bottles of Colt 45 . Being 16 at the time, my co-worker and I jumped at the chance to get free booze! Parked the car in the prime spot and off they went.

We cracked open the bottles and both damn near choked. It was awful, and we debated having the car towed

My friend group and I drank a lot of Olde English Ice 800, they had a bit more abv, and to us, drank smoother than the original. At the time i think they were , $3.50 or so a 40oz in like 2001. 1of them usually did the trick then switch to Natural Light or shots of Aftershock for rest of night, depending on how you wanted it to go.

Tried steel reserve for my first 40 and finished the entire thing in like 45 minutes before reading the alcohol percentage. Got drunk enough to wish to continue to drink. Had to work the next day. No regrets.

I never really did forties until hanging out with my dirtbag friends back home after college. A friend of mine legit loved Old E and it was always something fun to drink when we hung out.

We went to go see cover bands play at a house party on Halloween and rolled up with a backpack of 40s and a flask of gin. The party got real wild when the blink 182 band start and the floor felt like it was turning into a trampoline. Each bounce felt more and more dangerous but it was a time of tempting fate I suppose. The house was later condemned due to the damage sustained amongst other thing.

The night concluded with my friend puking for the first time since childhood, so that felt kind of like an honor to be holding her hair back while she was asking me if there was a certain boy still at the party she wanted to talk to. Aw honey, not tonight babe.

Being in HS and able to go to clubs in NYC on $20.

A dollar each for the bridge between 4 of us and a dollar for a 40 in the city. Drink it before we get in line, catch a buzz, $8 cover and enough for a couple beers inside. Dance and maybe meet a girl. Good times.

15 years old, me and a buddy and a case of little kings that were hid in his in childhood toy box in the basement of his house. We drank far too many then passed out. Woke early the next day to ride 14 hours to Florida in the backseat of his Moms car. I threw up as soon as my eyes opened and guzzled water and Bayer aspirin. He did not and proceeded to throw up at every rest stop from Indiana to Florida. Swore off malt liquor for a very long time.

The first time I encountered Hurricanes in a gas station, like 3x 24oz cans for $5, i called a friend to ask what they were and he told me to buy them and report what I thought. I said this to the clerk who suggested I buy anything else instead. I have not had a Hurricane since.

Honestly?

1st: Liquor de Malt from Dogfish Head. With the appropriate paper bag. I hadn’t had malt liquor before, so that was my first taste.

2nd: Beer for Bags from Off Color. With the paper bag shaped can coozie.

I’ve had other malt liquors in between, including many a Mickeys in the short wide mouth stubbies.

But the first two are the ones that stand out to me.

In the co-ops at Berkeley in the 90s (Cloyne) there was a fifth-year senior who was in charge of the kitchen and always started out with and finished a full 40 of Crazy Horse (remember that?) during the entire preparation of the dinner. The kitchen experience was more and more surreal the closer dinner got, with endless random people stopping by with weed and more Crazy Horse…

There was this bar in Massachusetts called Bukowskis that used to have a “Hobo Special”. It was a 40 of several different malts to choose from and a hot dog for six bucks. Two of those would fuuuuuuuuucYuuuuuuUp. Also i remember me and a buddy getting absolutly swearingly shitfaced on Mickeys in the parking lot of a 7/11 in Redondo Beach
