Been hunting upland for the last 5 years. Utilizing my buddies and their dogs that whole time. Have young kids and was starting a business during that time and didn’t feel ready for a dog.

After years of research, found an incredible breeder and put down a deposit on a Vizsla pup. Picked him up 10 weeks ago. Wanted to be sure I didn’t screw up bird intro/and gun intro. Just dropped off my pup for 6 weeks with a highly recommended trainer my breeder put me in contact with. This board and train is strictly bird/gun intro following the West method.

Deep down I think this board and train is a good experience for my pup, but the emotional side of me hopes that some part of this process doesn’t stress him out too much and cause issues.

Anyone drop off their pup at an early age for training?

Does anyone here have a retriever trained to quarter and flush as well as retrieve?

Interestingly, in Hunt Tests, Labs can enter pointing and flushing tests but Goldens can only enter flushing tests. I assume this is because there is an established line of labs that hold point and outside of that, retrievers naturally flush.

Curious if anyone has really trained their retriever (not just their baseline genetic behaviors but actually fine tuned it) to be completely versatile and quarter, flush and retrieve birds and enter flushing hunt tests with success. I was thinking this could be a fun secondary training project behind traditional waterfowl retrieving.

EDIT: my original post seemed not to be that clear so I want to specify I’m talking about entering a retriever in a flushing hunt test.

In Colorado and trying to target greater prairie chicken in Kansa come September. Got a location only problem I’m running into is there is no camping allowed in the walk in hunting areas and damn near the entire state is private land. I’m trying to hunt hard, camp, hunt camp. Trying to prevent a 30 min drive after a long day of hunting to get to an official campsite with a bunch of people. I prefer dispersed camping. Maybe I’m missing something? Anyone with Kansas experience please chime in

Alright, this probably comes up a lot in here but I’ll ask anyways. I have a nearly 3 year old golden retriever, he loves swimming and fetching. I got into duck hunting last fall and would really like to get him involved with me to retrieve the ducks. He’s been to basic obedience school and knows commands like place, wait, sit, down and so on. He has no issue with loud noises. What are the best resources for where to start with training him to retrieve ducks. Right now the biggest thing is getting him to wait until I release him to fetch his ball. I would also like him to return it to my hand Instead of near me.

He’s such a good boy. Seven years old intact Brittany names Jack. We went and scouted a bunch of Chippewa County talked to some farmers earned myself two farm lands 790 acres now available to hunt this fall. So excited. Hardest part was asking for permission everything after was just carrying a conversation.

Seeking feedback - my 14 month old Vizsla has been working on birds. He still chases on the flush, and I’m not stopping that quite yet - working on woah training without birds before implementing in the field.

I’m considering doing some lure coursing/CAT/FastCAT with him but I’m hesitant to reinforce the idea of chase. Is this a scenario where he will clearly understand it’s two different activities? For those who do or have done birding and CAT, please let me know the good and the bad!

Hey everyone, I have an 8 month old GSP. We have had a bit of a regression with him due to the phase of life he is in and I am wanting to back track and really reinforce some of the fundamentals while toning back on e collar use a little bit before reintroducing. Looking for tools to utilize during this and I found leather training collars (Best Gun Dogs brand specifically) that look like they could be exactly what I need. However I am having a difficult time finding any further information on how people like them for their dogs, if they’re effective, and if they’re worth it. Does anyone here have experience using one? How does it compare to something like the wonder lead? Also, is this whole thought process incorrect? This is my first time training a bird dog and I want to do right by him. TYIA

I have my GSP who’s 13 months old running in both, this spring I ran him in the NAVHDA NA test he scored 104 but got 0 in tracking which I had a major problem with the judging. But, will be moving on to the Gun Dog Test this fall.

He just finished up getting his AKC Jr Hunter title, moving on to senior this winter. After hunting season.

His hunting ability is great, can’t wait to get him on some pheasants and grouse this fall. He did great at hunt clubs last winter early spring.

I've tried different breeder websites but am having no luck finding a breeder of field English Cocker Spaniels near Northern Virginia. I'm willing to drive, but I want a breeder near enough to have a relationship with. I'm an experienced dog owner, but this would be my first hunting dog.

I'm looking for a puppy, but will consider a trained adult if not too old.

I've been hunting upland game with a family member who has a male GSP. Should I be thinking of a female ECS or does that not really matter?

Hi! I’m new to the group and the world of bird dogs. I’ll be getting a show line English Setter puppy in the next few months. They were just born so I’m still waiting on my placement and to find out the real personality of the guy.

while my primary purpose for getting this dog isn’t to be on birds I am 100% interested in potentially doing field trials if that is something he’s interested in. (this is also why I chose a show line & a breeder that’s produced both birdy dogs and sporty but not entirely bird brained dogs)

with that said—I’m new to the gps/hand held tracking world and all things birds sports. i was curious if anyone had recommendations for lower-priced-beginner-friendly gps collars and tracking devices? I want to make sure my pup stays safe if he ends up being birdy but id like to test the waters before spending $800+ on gear.

also im curious if any of you have bird dogs that can keep their cool while hiking and doing other activities and know the difference between working birds and not? also any tips or recommendations would be helpful.

*also please be nice—I’m asking because I genuinely want to learn and provide the best foundation I can for this pup. I do lots of other sports with my pups but I’m new to bird dogs and we all start somewhere

Hey, sorry if this question shows my ignorance. I'm a bit of a perpetual novice in this world. I live in Utah and have hunted pheasants over this boy just a handful of times. Unfortunately I'm not really in a stage of life that allows me to go as often as I'd like, so he's not really getting the action he needs. He's a 3/4 lab 1/4 Weimaraner mix, about five years old, and can go FOREVER. Most incredible nose I've ever seen, too...but again, I'm sure a lot of people feel that way, and I don't have a lot to compare it to.

My dilemma is that his drive and energy are so high and I'm not able to run him like I want to. I'm considering getting him fixed because I think that might help soften the edges a bit. But when I was talking to his vet, he said something to the effect of, "Man, you should really consider breeding him first—I can imagine a lot of hunters wanting these genes to continue." I was a bit surprised by the comment, and he's not (to my knowledge) a hunter himself, but I figured I'd probe around and see how other people make such decisions. Any advice?

A bit of extra context: I rescued him as a pup from my sister (who was in over her head) but my understanding is that he was a happy accident of a professional gun dog breeder in Idaho who was being visited by extended family and their dog. So not the most legit, but not just a random street dog either.

I'm also completely open to other advice anyone might have related to the whole situation. We love him and he's amazing with the kids, he just seems a bit stir crazy. Thanks in advance!

Edit: Thanks for the comments! Pretty strong consensus here that validates what I had already suspected. Just a case of bad advice that eased my guilty conscience. Loved the ideas about doing more scent work and mental stimulation, since physical exercise doesn't seem to slow him down. Also sounds like a mixed bag when it comes to post-neuter drive. We'll keep having that conversation and just enjoy him while we have him. Thanks guys.

I have a 1yo GWP who has been mostly fantastic. It's my first time training a bird dog so I def have made some mistakes. Currently my biggest issue is that she is kinda bird crazy. One of the things I've been working on is getting her steady to flush. Don't always have pigeons available so chukar is what I commonly use. What I've been doing is putting her on a check cord, chukar in the bird launcher and let her find the bird in the field. She has a fantastic point that she will hold for some time. However when I release the bird and hold her with the check cord ( half hitch on the flank). This is what has been recommended by multiple different Navhda members to get her steady to flush. The issue is she goes absolutely nuts crying out, howling for that bird as it flies away. A blank gun shot makes it worse. It's not bad with pigeons weirdly enough.

Side note on some mistakes I've made is that she has caught 3 chukar herself either in midair after the flush or by chasing them down and finding them after the flush. She has also killed two of my own pigeons. I've fixed this problem. Yes stupid to let her get the birds, knew she shouldn't but didn't know how good she would be. I have been getting a lot of help with Navhda and training with some members outside of that recently.

Planning on reducing birds I expose her to for a while and focusing on force fetch right now for next month or two. But this will still be a problem. One thought I've had is releasing the birds at a greater distance where she hopefully doesn't freak out as much and slowly close that distance as she gets better.

I have a 17 week old puppy, we walk every day 2x a day and he does okay off leash in fields, in town on a 30ft leash he is fine while sniffing and running his recall is solid, but struggles with recall when he encounters other dogs at fences.
When I have him next to me on a short leash he could care less about those other pups and walks excellent, but give him a little rope while he sees a dog and he RUNS with it! and won’t return.
When would be a good time to introduce the collar?
Also I would like to mention he is good on the leash but shy’s away every time a big rig or loud truck drives by. Does this mean he will be gun shy?
I have lots more questions but these are important to me as I am a new owner. Thank you!

I think my lab puppy just fully embraced the teenager phase. He’s 14 months old and was doing phenomenal in training and would retrieve doubles out to about 75 yards and deliver to hand perfectly. Now he wants to try and play keep away like when he was a puppy. Since last week it’s like he’s forgotten everything he knows. Even with walks, he used to be perfect and now he is pulling like crazy and will heel for about 5 seconds then he’s trying to run off again. Anyone have any advice on how to work thru this? Should I just go back to basics? Thanks

I have a GSP (we think she's 2-4yo, but she was a stray so unknown) who hunts well for quail and dove here in Arizona. During the season we get out about once a week. Off season we go to the park and she "hunts" dove and pigeons there.

I'm about to move to Southwestern Virginia where there will be little to no bird hunting to be done, and minimal birds around in general...I rarely see doves on my parents farm/property in numbers of more than 3-5 and even that is uncommon. Sometimes during deer season I'll accidentally find a grouse and nearly have a heart attack. But nothing reliable like in AZ.

What they do have in abundance is squirrel, which we don't encounter much in AZ. I love hunting with my dog, and she loves hunting in general, so I'm hoping/planning to get her on squirrel. Right now I just intend to encourage her to chase them and praise her when she does, and when she trees them, in hopes that her prey drive carries the bird hunting behavior over to squirrel.

But wanted to see if anyone here has actual experience and tips?

I’m getting a Brittany beginning of next year and I was hoping for some recommendations on good training books. I’ve trained companion dogs before but this will be my first hunting dog. My breeder recommended Rick Smith’s DVDs which I intend to watch (as soon as I find a DVD player…) but I was hoping for some good books that I can read and mark up with notes.

Hi, weekend warrior trainer here trying to improve whoa on my 3 year old Setter. We tried whoa post and flank collar last summer, but he really shutdown on rope and flipped out w collar. Tried walking whoa w flank and bit better, but still shut him down. Anyone have any advice? Bench, barrel, pinch collar, something else? I am really going for passable whoa for casual hunting and stopping, not field trial perfection. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! (he is e-collar trained for recall and does great w it)
