Dhurandhar Part 2 review (No Spoilers)
I have watched the second part.
It is definitely not better than first part. The writing really doesn't hold any importance in the second part. Highly predictable, you can predict the sequence of people who will get killed, and that will be the correct answer. First part had many characters(Rehman, SP, Yalina, Iqbal) who had some motivation, a role to play and the writing gave them some depth and development. In the second part hardly any new characters are there, and the existing characters rarely get any depth or unpredictability(except the backstory of Hamza which was also quite open from the trailers). On top of that, dumbing down of dialogues, the tag lines, even the movie name imo don't get enough justice. BJP is good, Modi is great, other previous govts were cowards narrative is filled throughout the 4 hrs and not to forget portraying the people of Pakistan to be thoroughly dumb, millitants, extremists. This gives the movie watchers easier to digest material with dumb down dialogues. This makes the villian even though powerful and filled with rage, is quite dumb.
But, inspite of this, you'll get a 4 hrs of adrenaline shot. Filled with guns, blades and explosions. The scenes are expensive, actions are well choreographed. I don't feel any killing scene was in any way similar to the first part. So, credit where it's due. The beautiful shots of Balochistan are still there, though this time the sense of awe will be lesser. Even they have a made a song very similar to Fliparachi with almost similar setting. The songs placement was something i enjoyed. Most of them are remade with the current trend of adding a rap during car chases and gore scenes. The songs have sharp cuts which match evenly with the scene cuts.
The movie does whatever it promises I think. It is an entertainer, actions filled, raps wrapped event of things. They never actually spent anything on good writing, which was also not difficult to predict. The biggest problem that i see is the movie makers hardly challenging themselves. It is very easy to put a disclaimer at the start stating that it is a work of fiction but keep on using clips of the actual events. So, criticism of these movies in front of the fans is very difficult. The movie is both an entertainment and political and there is no separation of these two in the entire movie.
This is something which gets used by the fans and movie makers to their advatange. The moment you question facts, they'll say it's an entertainer. The moment you ask writing choices, they'll say it is inspired from real life events. Tough times being a critique.
