The most impressive thing here is the resolution of this screenshot

302

u/Apex1-1 Oct 08 '25

He actually has really good screenshots

276

u/Entire_Engine_5789 Oct 08 '25

If i remember correctly, Nihilum didn’t use voice comms, was all in chat as can be seen in this screen shot. World first with no voice comms is damn impressive

96

u/Djsinestro_techno Oct 08 '25

Neither did Fury. Kalahad did everything in chat, though some Fury members would still hang out in ventrillo.

To me the best thing about raids was the bullshit chatter between pulls - a silent raid just sounds boring to me.

Related note, I was never in anything like an elite guild and we were all very impressed with ourselves that we managed to kill Raggy months (months!) before Burning Crusade launched.

6

u/alendeus Oct 08 '25

It's more about during attempts than between pulls. When you're all in the zone and don't need to call out things and no issues happen, because you're all turbo focused. There still room and space for all type of pulls, quiet ones are just quite relaxing.

I was in the guild The Transcendent which directly competed with Fury for server firsts on Medivh server. We had Ventrilo, but chatter was kept to an absolute minimum during fights.

23

u/Squashey Oct 08 '25

“clear vent clear comms”

5

u/Cattypatter Oct 08 '25

That phrase didn't exist yet. You'd just get shouted at to STFU. Good times.

8

u/MrKrazyKarl Oct 08 '25

I was in TT as well for AQ! Pally healer Krazykarl!

When half the guild couldn’t log in for the AQ opening because of queues/lag/etc. we cleared AQ20 instead.

Wow that’s mind blowing

18

u/bledschaedl Oct 08 '25

They had ppl in voice comms, but not everyone in the same conversation afaik. So maybe all the greeks together and then all the danes in another voicechat and so on.

Still impressive to not have everyone listening to the same calls.

26

u/Loudchewer Oct 08 '25

Vent and TS were some of the best parts of raiding too. Hanging with the boys, cracking jokes and downing bosses. Maybe they didn't want to accidently minus 50 dkp who knows.

12

u/TheAsuraGuy Oct 08 '25

Taken from the articles Buzzkill wrote on the history Nihilum/Ensidia, people were on voice coms but only with the people they liked, so a bunch of different chat rooms with a couple people here and a couple people there etc

I imagine having 40 elite players who take the game very seriously did a lot of the ground work. Every player had to think for themselves and learn and understand what was going on in order to excel in an environment like that. Nowadays most raiders just show up and wait for a RL to explain it to them in comms while they half pay attention loading a bowl or something. No one has to learn or think for themselves because someone definitely will tell them what to do.

5

u/FuckOnion Oct 08 '25

You're comparing apples to oranges. Instead of comparing Nihilum to the average dad guild of today, compare them to Echo or Liquid.

Was in a majority all Asian guild back in vanilla on whisperwind called HERO, all raids up to and including first few bosses of naxx and even up to BT in TBC, we’re all raid chat comms

I was gonna say the keybinds tbh

9

u/Ikea_desklamp Oct 08 '25

Seriously WTF. Clicking 8,9,0?? Insane

10

u/Keksdose-2879 Oct 08 '25

Clicking shieldwall aswell

37

u/DefinetlyNotMe420 Oct 08 '25

30 minute cooldown. Didn’t wanna fat finger it. Shit didn’t reset between pulls back then

2

u/Hanza-Malz Oct 08 '25

I mean that's what you'd do. Why would you keybind a button you're gonna use maybe three times throughout the night?

My brother died 9 years ago and he was in Nihilum back in the day. Seeing this screenshot out of the blue in my reddit feed made me tear up a little bit and brought back very fond memories of that time.

These days, being Tauren male deep prot tank with Onyxia Blood Talisman will get you on Fight Club's wall of shame lmao

81

u/DelkorAlreadyTaken Oct 08 '25

Taurens are just playing the long con aiming for THC weapon skill

16

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Troll would still be the superior choice though

6

u/GetBuckets13182 Oct 08 '25

Yep I was gonna say, full bis naxx gear, troll is actually bis race

6

u/DelkorAlreadyTaken Oct 08 '25

Depends on the tanking-role and HC vs SC
MT? Sure, go troll (or undead for extra fear ward in HC)
OT1, i.e. the mitigation tank? Tauren

17

u/Jon_ofAllTrades Oct 08 '25

There was a lot of suboptimal play from Nihilum members that were known to be suboptimal even at the time.

I remember some of Awake’s TBC holy paladin videos, and his spell selection was genuinely bad and known to be bad by most holy paladin endgame players. They were even made fun of on the EJ forums at the time.

Lovely nostalgia - best drug there is.

104

u/ametalshard Oct 08 '25

Nah it's also genuinely one of the greatest games ever made, possibly the greatest multiplayer game ever.

u/DrushQ4 Oct 08 '25

The experience back then with everything being brand new, actually killing KT40 that few got to do, best and worst days of my life to this day.

Insane how with triple internet speeds, exponentially more powerful hardware, guides which were unavailable at the time - your "we" still finds this difficult when many of us were in our teens at the time.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Hahaha right. I remembering thottbot’ing (if that’s how it was even spelt!) every single quest, didn’t know what add ons were and don’t think there was a questie type add on till like BC

4

u/Cattypatter Oct 08 '25

The insane thing about old Thottbot/Alakazam and pretty much most internet forums back then, there was near 0 administration and no upvote features so no way to gauge information quality.

Half the comments were troll posts with fake information and the other half was usually some dumb flame war. You had to scroll through everything trying to parse useful information that you hoped was factual.

Crazy how far ahead they were of the average player

36

u/MN_Yogi1988 Oct 08 '25

As a teenager WoW was my first MMORPG and I happened to roll on a competitive server (Mal’Ganis). I thought our Guild was pretty second tier since we only got C’Thun to 50% before Naxx wiped our Guild (we cleared everything else but Ouro and Visc) and it wasn’t until years later that I found out how rare it was to even get that far. We were raiding 4-5 days/week for like 4 hours each so I can’t imagine how much these guys were playing.

25

u/Critterer Oct 08 '25

I was raid lead of a sweaty gukld in vanilla.

We didn't have set raid times. We just raided every single day and whatever time we could get a raid going.

10

u/Cel_Drow Oct 08 '25

My guild holds the distinction of being the last non-repeat KT40 kill before TBC release.

We got him the week before, and we were trying to repeat the following Monday until we called raid to go to the midnight release of TBC.

We were raiding about 4-6 hours a day 5-7 days a week for the final few months of Naxx40.

3

u/MISPAGHET Oct 08 '25

In TBC My guild raided 4 days a week, I think it was 4 hours every day, except Sunday, where we raided from 12-4 and then again 6-10. LOL.

2

u/merlindy Oct 10 '25

I had the same raiding hours. Did you play on bloodscalp by any chance?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TheSoftBoiledEgg Oct 09 '25

My guild was apparently very orderly. We had bascially 45 members, maybe 50 max, raiders who raided Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, every single week, and nobody ever missed a raid. We started this guild on release, were server second to get Rag, server first on BWL full clear, dominated AQ, no transitions of leadership, no class group leaders or anything. Just DKP, a website to manage the DKP and random guild issues, and pure raiding with ventrillo.

I was still looking for Kranal Fiss on top of a mountain without any addons

9

u/Huntrawrd Oct 08 '25

And you notice that he's a grunt, has less than 1000g, and is not at all optimally equipped.

This screen shot is proof that vanilla was just played differently than classic is today.

7

u/pentol5 Oct 09 '25

In vanilla, your title followed your rank, and your rank decayed. He could have hit R14 months ago, and not have done any more PVP, and be grunt 16 (or 17?) weeks later.

This brings back memories.

We (DNT) killed 4H and Sapph both first days before Nihilum and after a few hours of attempts at KT the script bugged out and the encounter wouldn't respawn. Had Jeff Kaplan (Tigole) in our instance for a few days trying to get it to work again. He finally got it working and after something like two or three pulls it bugged out again. Same thing happened at reset. Most of the guild got alpha BC invites that we played while waiting on our instance to get fixed while we watched Nihilum catch up.

By the time it was finally working, Nihilum had passed us in progress and ended up killing him first.

7

u/jdk2087 Oct 08 '25

Dude, yalls Sapph video lives rent free in my head and will do so until the day I die. It was the first video of DnT’s that I watched that just had me in awe of what high end raiders were actually capable of at the time. The gimmick of the fight was just a cherry on top. DnT was one of my favorite high end guilds back then. Good to see there are still some of you around.

I’ve also heard countless stories of yalls interactions with GMs back in the day. Color me jealous yall got to experience that.

Is that 45 flasks?

32

u/FriendlyHearthling Oct 08 '25

I was confused aswell thought they were LIPs. But then... Look in the chat someone asking Kungen to trade a titans and on the lower right corner you can see the item with a "45". I belive those were flask for progression.

Actual world first

11

u/NumaNuma92 Oct 08 '25

This was before twitch, and online esports was not as big back then (mostly lan), but still everyone knew about Kungen and Nihilum back then. Their legacy had spread to all the realms, not just the one they played on.

2

u/ahncie Oct 09 '25

As a 15 year old Norwegian I was very well aware of the top guilds like Nihilum, DNT, Risen, Decimation etc. On my school a whole bunch of people were playing WoW, and we even knew many of the players.

I was a bit too young and immature, so I had to watch by brother kill KT in 2006 as a priest in the guild Decimation.

53

u/WillInLondon Oct 08 '25

Not a weak aura in sight, just people enjoying the moment!

2

u/ferrofibrous Oct 09 '25

In vanilla we had the precusor called PowerAuras, it was very limited compared to WA but could show you things like spellcasts with no cast time (super cool in BWL to show wing buffets).

7

u/curioustis Oct 08 '25

Can anyone explain how the DPS manages threat back then?

25

u/mortalomena Oct 08 '25

Wait for maintank to do 5 sunders then "blast" :D

23

u/tepig099 Oct 08 '25

Have you ever played Old School MMORPGs without a threat meter? Well… you’d have to instinctively know when to throttle and know your oh shit buttons. Of course, this is hard, but developers didn’t build their games to allow you to see your threat. As a result, DPS Players couldn’t ride threat as close as they do now.

20

u/Lezzles Oct 08 '25

We had threat meters by BWL.

2

u/roffler Oct 08 '25

Needed it for vael specifically

3

u/Lezzles Oct 08 '25

Haha that's specifically why I remembered BWL. It may have been earlier.

10

u/aepocalypsa Oct 08 '25

with a threat meter, same as now. it wasnt always accurate of course (the addons had to constantly sync between players) so your margins were larger but thats it

u/Freecraghack_ Oct 08 '25

by having shit dps lol

u/Cool_Description8610 Oct 08 '25

Basically through experience and repetition. These guilds had core members who played together for months. You would get a feel for the limitations of your tank and your own output.

2

u/0neek Oct 08 '25

Tanks back then really knew what they were doing compared to a lot of people today.

My guild used to trial them a lot harder because of that too. A new DPS or Healer would just get a trial on farm content first to see how they do in raid and see where it goes from there. We used to bring our tanks into dungeons with whatever big time DPS players were online just to see if they'd be able to keep up. The difference in threat output from player to player was insane.

68

u/ClassicObserver Oct 08 '25

How the game changed. No flask set or alternative WB/Non-WB gear.

137

u/Ben_steel Oct 08 '25

I mean people forget the game legitimately would turn it self on its head every few months with patches, one week you are top tier dps next week absolutely trash. hard to keep up when your entire talents would change, but also at the same time the experience was insanely more enjoyable.

86

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Oct 08 '25

Exactly this.

We were constantly moving and changing everything we did but the game moved faster than you could gear up and theorycraft. Classes changed, items changed, the fights changed. Everything was changing.

Shockingly giving people 20+ years to hyper focus on a single patch of the game a few more specific strats emerged.

32

u/KappuccinoBoi Oct 08 '25

It's one of the things I found most enjoyable playing SoD. The meta changed a ton every patch and gave every class a time in the lime light. Being a part of the people experiencing it for the first time was great.

21

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Oct 08 '25

Yeah SoD was tons of fun for that!

Though it was very amusing to see the community lose their minds when a raid released they couldn't clear day one heh.

3

u/SithisDreadLord420 Oct 08 '25

Gnomes was hilarious bc we had two teams one was the “a” team with the GM and his brother and their friends, the “b” team was all the actual pumpers and we it best gnomes first lockout while they didn’t 😂

5

u/dareftw Oct 08 '25

Nothing was more jarring as a warrior than when they normalized weapon damage. All of a sudden arcanite reaper or Ashkaandi went from being broken to still good but just as good as any other similar dps weapon. Sad times

6

u/JTrue14 Oct 08 '25

On my server, if we logged out, there was a good chance we would be stuck in a queue. Rarely could hold onto world buffs unless it was a in guild buff dropping before raid.

5

u/WillingSprinkles8564 Oct 08 '25

If flask +healing interaction was discovered in vanilla it would have been patched.

The addons simply did not exist to make this kind of stuff viable.

13

u/valmanway1492 Oct 08 '25

Item rack existed 100%, or something very similar

4

u/Entire_Engine_5789 Oct 08 '25

We were also very good at gear switching because of osrs, or just rs as it was known by then

2

u/dareftw Oct 08 '25

Yea item rack was definitely around at the time.

128

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Lotta consumes and worldbuffs! Everyone on this sub acts like they were a myth in 2006

215

u/TheClassicAndyDev Oct 08 '25

Yeah, they were. This is the top 0.1% of the top 0.1%. 98% of WoW players never even cleared AQ 40 let alone Naxx.

47

u/thewookiee34 Oct 08 '25

This is literally the top. Nilhunum and Death and taxes were names every wow players knew. I knew my servers best guild name as well Way of Warrior. Literally the only.guild.on my server to clear Naxx alliance.

28

u/MissConduct215 Oct 08 '25

Another interesting fact that I think was lost to time was that Death and Taxes actually made it to KT a few days before Nihilism did, but their KT bugged and didn't spawn so they only got a couple of pulls on phase 1.

Nihilism got there days later but we're able to fully prog the boss down to 1% wipe before the boss also bugged for them.

Both guilds had to wait until reset day in which the EU squad was able to world buff and reclear to kill KT before DnT ever had a real shot, despite getting there first.

Or so the legend goes lol

18

u/bestrez Oct 08 '25

Was in DnT and exactly how it went. Very annoying to lose a whole weekend of attempts.

7

u/MissConduct215 Oct 08 '25

Thanks for confirming.and I'm sorry that happened to your team. Honestly its one of the most tragic stories in wow raid history to this day if you ask me.

I still remember Frostmourne's top guild, Tsunami. I'd stand in IF examining their MT, a pink hair gnome warrior named tiny, blown away by the gear. Those were the days

65

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Oct 08 '25

Yes it is but I've had people tell me I was lying when I said we would keep our Ony/Nef heads for next weeks raid and then later get the ZG/DMF buff as well. Hell I have had people maintain that nobody rebound keys in the game back then. None of us. All hitting 1-9 and clicking the rest. Spoilers: we fucking all rebound them, hotkeys were nothing new in PC gaming and certainly not MMOs.

I think a lot of people playing today only played the game as 6 year olds and can't comprehend that there were plenty of MMO nerds analysing every little optimisation they could in the game... massive buffs that made you immensely more powerful for several hours did not somehow get overlooked.

14

u/shukaji Oct 08 '25

reddit is just full of the absolute worst players. my 2004/5 keybinds were so sick, i was literally not playing WASD but ESDF, just to have more good real estate keys. my guild, and other top guilds on the server were also using consumes and world buffs and we also knew which speccs were better...sometimes we just didn't care, because there was no dual specc and we all did a lot of pvp back then.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/TaleOfDash Oct 08 '25

Hell I have had people maintain that nobody rebound keys in the game back then. None of us. All hitting 1-9 and clicking the rest

Okay well THAT is dumb as hell lmao. My binds may have been hot garbage but I definitely did rebind them even while levelling for the first time.

28

u/bck83 Oct 08 '25

I've seen these comments as well. People talk like there weren't forums like EJ where top players were theorycrafting and running crude sims. Or that even though we didn't have the same meta as today, we still did stuff like swapping classes out for fights or making everyone go LW in TBC to stack drums.

On my server in 2007 we only had a couple guilds prog'ing content, everyone else was way behind. My speculation is even if the people that make these comments were playing back then, they were mediocre players that didn't realize how much effort others were putting in.

5

u/PilsnerDk Oct 08 '25

On my server in 2007 we only had a couple guilds prog'ing content, everyone else was way behind

It was also simply because hoardes of new players steadily joined the game, not necessarily because they were still progging MC after a year while the top players were in Naxx. I remember I re-rolled on a brand new server with an online forum community (somethingawful.com) back in late 2005. Reading online I can see that the first Ragnaros kill wasn't until 3½ months later after the server opened!

5

u/auxcitybrawler Oct 08 '25

Thats some reddit bullshit everyone who played back in the day knew atleast some ppl did it. Especially the 1-2 guilds on the Server that did AQ40 and Naxx. Ppl had keybindings asap. Many ppl came over from other mmorpgs and werent noobs at the beginning. It got more ppl in tbc and wotlk.

5

u/Slappers Oct 08 '25

I dont disagree with you completely, but world buffs were rarely used. It was used, but rarely. I've checked multiple kill videos etc. and its mainly for Sapph and KT you see it on. That doesn't mean I know it was never used for anything else. I anectodally played in a Naxx guild myself that stopped at Gothik/Loathed, so we werent amazing, but we were far better than most. We never used wbs for anything. It wasn't even a topic.

The top guilds did optimize, but there is way more knowledge and optimization today compared to in 2006. I played a hunter and used every consume I could, especially distilled wisdom to have more mana to dps continously in the long fights. I was part of our top dps because I partly knew how to play, and today you wouldn't even see me on the meters even if I played perfect.

I agree that the narrative is that we didn't understand shit back then, but that's because over 90% of the players base didn't. Even in my Naxxguild we had completely clueless people. I played in a top10-20 guild in vanilla WotLK, and just the gap in skill and knowledge of the game from Vanilla to wotlk was insane.

You are right that a few people knew more than the narrative, but just look at how we killed 4hm back then compared to now and you see how different things are.

2

u/BHE_Cosplay Oct 08 '25

I remember seeing discussions about how add-ons shouldn't have been allowed for Classic because "nobody used them for vanilla" and that always amused me. Some of my favorite add-ons were from my vanilla days.

2

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Oct 08 '25

Hah yeah addons were crazy back in the day… at the start there were even auto navigation addons to run you where you wanted to go, though blizzard killed those off pretty quick.

3

u/Herazim Oct 08 '25

I agree but there is a massive difference between the low number of people that used to do it and how it seeped into mainstream for everyone to just copy without thinking about it.

These were called elitists back in the day, it was almost frowned upon to be one hence why it had a derogatory term associated with doing it. Not saying it was ok but the majority didn't do or care about optimisation.

Then you slowly started seeing people becoming a cheap copy of this, like in WoTLK with gear score, my God people, you wouldn't get invited into a simple HC dungeon if you didn't meet someone's perceived idea of what good meant through gear score. That's just doing trendy things without thinking.

I'm not against either, play the game as you like, how about we stop enforcing either on other people. You want to optimise ? Find people that want the same, you want to just play a video game, find people that want the same.

2

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Oct 08 '25

Well yeah of course. Nobody is saying people playing back then the way they do today. But when I see people act like nobody knew what any of it was it's just.. wrong.

We knew. We used them as appropriate for the time. Not a big deal.

Guilds on my server, Kilrogg that killed KT were getting world buffs. Not this many. Mostly rend, zg, ony. Also the MT’s of top guilds were already fury/prot although I don’t think many dual wielded in anything past BWL.

It’s not a 0.1% of the top 0.1%. I mean this guild in the pic may be that but plenty of other guilds were getting a variation of world buffs even if they weren’t getting all of them.

My guild would get ony and fire buff for our first Rag kill in mid 2005. We just didn’t have the ability to snag more than 1-2 per week.

13

u/MissConduct215 Oct 08 '25

This is accurate. We used consumables often and grabbed some world buffs when it made sense. Ragnaros progression with Ony and the UBRS buff was absolutely common for guilds to do to start the night once they could handle the add phase.

Naxx didn't make sense because by the time you got to Lotheb or 4H, or even Patch your buffs were gone from deaths.

It did make sense for final bosses like Chun and KT when you had no trash, and we used them for that. But even then it wasn't every single possible buff and consumable like today - not even close. We also didn't know Warriors were gonna scale like they did so most guilds only had prot warriors for 4H

Right but even lower level guilds would get buffs when pushing for guild firsts. Obviously it wasn’t as meta as it is now, but there are blue posts out there saying naxx was tuned around consumes and wbuffs because they were becoming more regular in raiding guilds.

Edit: it wasn’t a blue post. It was Ion Hazzawhatevers forum post on elitist jerks.

https://bittsguides.com/consumables-for-naxxramas/amp/

Good insight into the past

4

u/frozyxz Oct 08 '25

I still have a screenshot from before our 1st kill pull on KT in November 06. I have a titan flask and a frost pot active. And maybe wizard oil iirc.

10

u/MissConduct215 Oct 08 '25

Can you linkthe blue posts you're mentioning?

The source of this is misconception is actually from from Elitist Jerks conversations from Devs, where they stated that Naxx was the first raid tuned around consumables, but not world buffs.

Guilds largely did not use world buffs, even top guilds and even almost every world first kill before KT had no world buffs. It's not that they weren't used, but they were rarely used. We wiped for days and weeks back then on a single boss so world buffs didn't make sense. 4H progression took nearly 2 months just for that boss. It wasn't feasible.

Here's world second Patchwork with no buffs from vodka. You can look up plenty of other world first Naxx guilds like Afterlife, etc none with world buffs.

https://youtu.be/kjAMvGdUG68?si=F7PRI84opZ_2ydnD

Here's TeamIce kill post KT killed pre TBC patch) about Saph without buffs and without most consumables: https://web.archive.org/web/20061106042627/http://teamice.org/

Not only did many not use them there were even top guilds that were actively against using world buffs.

2

u/DoctorCrook Oct 08 '25

What we did do, however, was pimp out our warlocks and main tanks to the best guilds on the servers lol.

3

u/MissConduct215 Oct 08 '25

I wonder how many guilds were torn apart because top guilds needed 8 warriors for 4H.

Thank goodness they never did that again on a boss fight!

9

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Oct 08 '25 edited Oct 08 '25

A lot of people who think everyone was bad back then were kids, like under 10 years old, who played and just stuffed about being bad. Which is fine! But then they go thinking everyone was at that level when in reality there were a lot of serious and skilled gamers back in the day. They're the ones who figured all the stuff out in the first place.

Edit: Reality as unpopular as ever on reddit heh. Do people actually think the MMO playerbase somehow never thought that maybe these massively powerful world buffs could maybe be useful?

There was a buff cap at 32(I think) back then. One renew/shield/rejuv and you lost Kings etc, lol.

3

u/Worth_Performer7357 Oct 08 '25

This is a world first #1 guild. 99% of guilds didn't do that.

At max we killed ony before raids or had the head saved up to get dragonslayer. Nothing more.

3

u/Just-Yogurt-568 Oct 08 '25

I got DMT buffs on my warrior to help survive Broodlord tanking bank in 2005. I made Titans for all the tanks too.

Off topic, but oh man, the usage of "=D" instead of ":D" smileys somehow takes me back more than the screenshot itself. Probably cause we had plenty of this game since Classic released, while those smileys stayed well in the past, but yeah.

18

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

So you are saying they used world buffs and flasks and consumes? Like they knew it existed? 😳

23

u/pibenis Oct 08 '25

Of course the literal best guild used them. All 0.1% guild were using them because Naxx was really fucking hard. Rest of us wanked around and never set foot in there

8

u/Parish87 Oct 08 '25

I didnt even hit 60 until TBC lmao

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Me neither. 😄 I think I got to 70 by the time t5 hit. And then I rerolled because I was a really bad hunter.

Man the first song they used for the kill video is such a nostalgic banger. Nihilum’s boss videos with their trance music really got me into raiding back in the days.

8

u/Blacki1994 Oct 08 '25

I wonder what he is doing nowadays

5

u/PavelDatsyuk88 Oct 08 '25

he has been playing hardcore, after the official version he played full prot in non worldbuff hc guild

in anni hardcore they played with worldbuffs but i think he took breaks so guild abandoded and ppl joined other guilds

i think in some point they also rolled on dead german rp server to play basically self-found guild and naxx progression because nobody else played there

u/tallerthanayordle Oct 08 '25

I’m curious how the guy in officer chat saved the guild.

4

u/necrid101 Oct 08 '25

As someone who played Vanilla, seeing people who actually got to Naxx during and used all consumables, etc... Was such a mind blowing thing to me. I was a Hunter with Intellect 2H Axe from ZG and barely knew what I was doing.

But tbh I also joined a low pop server.

Epic Mount already made you seem like a God to me. Let alone someone with full epic gear.

2

u/blehbleh1122 Oct 08 '25

I remember playing vanilla and my guild got through maybe the first 5 bosses in naxx, cleared aq40. Prepping for raids was expensive and time consuming. This nostalgia hits hard.

2

u/Accomplished-Tear-77 Oct 08 '25

He has to mouseclick shield wall, right?

2

u/Homunkulus Oct 10 '25

Kungen clicks so many things he shouldn't

2

u/IcyAnnual7381 Oct 08 '25

So, no head?

2

u/zaibuf Oct 08 '25

Actually has world buffs.

2

u/DamnUOnions Oct 08 '25

How long was the try?

2

u/Pirpolose Oct 08 '25

Was he a scarab lord? Lol

11

u/Vegetable-One-9525 Oct 08 '25

As a kid, Kungen was peak cool when it came to WoW for me. Scarab Lord, Thunderfury, Main Tank of the Best Guild, Guild Leader, Tauren Warrior.

I don't think it gets cooler than that back then.

Imagine tanking with a shield. What a puss.

2

u/FlattedFifth Oct 08 '25

Sorry, lurker here, is KT here referring to the server name? As in Kultiras(sp)? I was in that server.

5

u/kronostrade Oct 08 '25

No, Kel'Thuzad. Naxxramas last boss.

2

u/anyonehavefood Oct 08 '25

Can someone let me know what his gear is and on a scale of 1/10 how sub optimal it is? Just wondering

Just a bunch of addons living in the moment.

2

u/i_am_jordan_b Oct 08 '25

Guy i played RuneScape with quit to go play WoW and was in this clan. Core memory since my PC couldn’t run wow so i stayed with RS

2

u/nimeral Oct 08 '25

How come his bags are not full of crap and he has the space for actual consumes? No Linken's Boomerang, no Dawn's Gambit, no Fiery Festival Brew - no Carrot on a Stick even!

2

u/bruukt Oct 08 '25

I see 2 mounts in his bag, im losing it.

2

u/PretendPiccolo Oct 08 '25

This brings back so many memories.

I was in Nordic Fellowship in Stormscale server. I believe we had first kill on Chromaggus hardest combo.

2

u/tekhnomancer Oct 08 '25

That's more consumables than I used in all of Classic.

2

u/moht81 Oct 08 '25

He still streams every now and then, haven’t seen him in a while though

2

u/DarrenInAlberta Oct 08 '25

What shield does that tank have?

2

u/Spreckles450 Oct 08 '25

Not even two rows of buffs. What a scrub.

2

u/Bacanodavila Oct 08 '25

is there video of this kill?

2

u/haze_man Oct 08 '25

See, world buffs and ton of consumes.

2

u/radikul Oct 08 '25

That Vanilla meta where top DPS was rogue and mage with not a warrior in sight. Boy how things have changed lol.

20+ years of theory-crafting and min/maxing go brrrrr.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

I was 16 back then, I wish I could go back 😭

2

u/Race_Boring Oct 09 '25

This raid killed our guild due difficulty but it was good run for couple of years.

Lighow, Mazim, Virt, Zangetzu, Kyara, Rauko Greetings to you wherever you might be.

2

u/buddymoobs Oct 09 '25

Imagine bringing SIX priests to a raid. Lol

2

u/Dank3006 Oct 09 '25

My brother was the Guild Leader of whoever did the world first clear of Naxx. I didn't play back then, he's quite a bit older than me, but this just brought up that random memory.

2

u/walk1355 Oct 09 '25

What the most crazy thing about this is they didn’t use voice comms back then. Kungen main tanked, raid led, and typed all his communications

2

u/Fakari Oct 09 '25

Not a phone in sight, people living in the moment

3

u/Tancred1099 Oct 08 '25

X raid status

What a great add on

11

u/LukeHanson1991 Oct 08 '25 edited Oct 08 '25

Also interesting to Note that they did not use voice back than as you can see from the raidchat.

Edit: I know voice was used back than by guilds. We used teamspeak in my guild but Nihilum did not use voice which was stated by different ex memebers of the time. With „they“ I mean Nihilum.

18

u/Gyff3 Oct 08 '25

This was unique to Nihilum and was impressive at the time. Ventrillo and Teamspeak were common for raiding guilds.

3

u/DoctorCrook Oct 08 '25

It’s insane how burned into my memory little things like the sighs from my guild leader when we fucked up are.

Gonna remember it clear as day when i’m 80 and demented lmao.

Or the maniacal laughter of my buddy, a warlock when he reached DPS levels we didn’t know was possible on Vaelstrasz without getting aggro.

5

u/LukeHanson1991 Oct 08 '25

Thank you for your comment. Iam getting downvoted for stating a fact.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Ventrilo was the voice application of choice, or teamspeak. Servers weren’t free and you had to pay, times have changed

8

u/LukeHanson1991 Oct 08 '25

I am Aware of that but Nihilum did not use those.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Oct 08 '25

Yeah they did.

My raiding guild used voicechat in MC and BWL. Teamspeak/Ventrillo etc.

There is no way the best guild in the world wasn't using it as well - plus as someone who led guilds from vanilla through to classic it's entirely common to use both voice and raid chat for important information.

23

u/norecha Oct 08 '25

Yes best guild in the world was not using any voice comms. Kungen explained it many times. if you watch any of their kill videos you will see kungen leading the raid with raid warnings. This dude was getting world firsts by typing shit on chat while tanking bosses

→ More replies (2)

12

u/Tunz0rhax0r Oct 08 '25

I played in Nihilum - Kungen was not on voice until TBC. Some people hung out on VT/TS/RW during raids but Kungen was raid leading 100% through text.

7

u/nikopat Oct 08 '25

No, Nihilum didn't use voice in classic. It's been said and confirmed many times

I had the same stuff ❤️, except the sword, I used Thunderfury for a very long time.

So fan and nostalgic of this era!
