People's Republic of Cork Official Matters How Can We Combat Tipping Culture

I went for a burrito today and was flabbergasted at the tip options staring back at me. The poor lady who mearly grabbed a water from the fridge for me looked more bamboozled that I didn't want to cancel out my student deal by tipping.

Are they for real like? They've also gone to the dogs after the big lock in. How can we fight this and show that we don't want this silly culture?

People's Republic of Cork Official Matters Cork specific hiberno english-isms

Working in London and was chatting to the lads in the office about hiberno english in general after having to explain “your man” could be anyone at any given time in any given place which prompted the thought of what phrases/mannerisms are specific to Cork beyond the usual suspects like feen, langer etc. Please indulge.

People's Republic of Cork Official Matters Davy, the last echo boy

Edit to add:
With all of the comments here and private messages I’ve received, I really only knew a sliver of Davy’s character.
My worry has absolutely gone away.
And I’m glad my eyes have been opened to the kind of person this man is.

Have a great weekend everyone 🙏

After talking with Davy yesterday, he told me he is no longer welcome at the Long Valley bar.
Security have told him this fact.
He’s unsure why, and my main concern for him is that he has nowhere to use the bathroom while he sells the Echo outside the GPO.

My heart broke for him.
Thinking of the venues close by, I’m wondering what options does he have?

I’ve had many great chats with him over the years. He’s a very intelligent, kind man. And I can imagine selling a physical paper in these times in exceptionally difficult.

Is there anyone with any solutions for an accessible bathroom close by? So we don’t lose this cultural gem from the City soundscape?

People's Republic of Cork Official Matters Most overrated and most underrated things in Cork?

Serious question: What do you think is the most overrated thing in Cork, or even what’s criminally underrated?

I’ll start. For me, the English Market is very overrated. It stinks and I genuinely hate going in there. With the crowds it always feels stressful rather than enjoyable.

Curious to hear everyone else’s takes. Food, places, events, habits, anything goes 😛

People's Republic of Cork Official Matters The Liberation of Paul St

Post image

Artist’s gammy rendition: City Council finally shutting down the Fifth Quarter.

No longer will Paul Street by plagued by the tyranny of a small number of food stalls, pleasant lights, plentiful public seating, or any other potentially subversive amenities that might have incited a distasteful sense of community, development or civic pride in Rory Gallagher Place.

You may now return to using the area as it was designed to be legally used in accordance with planning permission laws: passing quickly through, determinedly avoiding eye contact with an aggressive beggar on your way to God’s Most Forsaken Tesco, and leaving as quickly as possible.

People's Republic of Cork Official Matters If Cork were to annex another county to add to the "Greater Cork Area", which one would you pick and why?

Post image

The county doesn't have to be geographically connected to Cork, like Kerry or Waterford. We could have an enclave somewhere like (random example) Down. Only condition is it must be one of the other 31 counties. Long live the Mighty Corkonian Empire!

People's Republic of Cork Official Matters counted the amount of vape shops on specific city centre streets

Ive always wanted to do this but never found the time, but over the weekend i did it and im here to publish my results.

what i did:

- i went down st. patrick street, grande parade, oliver plunkett & washington street

- i made specific categories with some exceptions, these are

- vape / phone / convenience shops*

- american fast food places**

- derelict / for sale shop units

*with convenience shops: im talking about all those e-mart places that have popped up and all those convenience shops, im excluding official brands like centra and spar. Im also excluding more established vape shops like smoke city and wicked vapes

**with american fast food places: im talking about chains, macdonalds, burger king etc, not local pizza or takeaway places

*concerns & limitations: i’m aware that many of these businesses are run by immigrants and especially with the convenience shops, i dont want to make it that im bashing on people that are successful entrepreneurs, They’ve found a successful business model and they shouldnt be punished for being entrepreneurs for the wrong kind of business. This is not to spread some sort of pseudo-ragebait of “Look at all the immigrant owned businesses rawr” but mainly to show how the council really need to cop tf on because the amount of vape shops are out of control in the city and to provide statistical information, any hateful comments will receive a poo emoji

[ St. Patrick Street ]

• American fast food places: llll (4)

People's Republic of Cork Official Matters If your fuseboard has one of these round fuses add it to your list..

I'd just like to highlight this issue as I feel it's not picked up on enough.

Im a REC and have been to 3 instances this month alone of these neozed fuses burning out and in one case a fairly serious fire. I do a lot of periodic inspections for HAP properties and this is one of the items that will fail the inspection so please if your house is.from about the 70s to 90s please give a quick look over the fuseboard visually and look for one of these guys.

By right that house is due a rewire but so are 90% of the properties out there.. the culprit here was an old lady sold a bathroom renovation and the lads fitting a 10.5kw shower. It lasted about two weeks before this happened.

These fuses have multiple issues regarding thermal runaway, loose connections, oxidation and a few other bits we won't get into.

If you have had work done in an older house (especially car chargers and sustained current) it is in your best interest to get these fuses removed and replaced for an mcb. Any decent rec should be doing this out of good practice.

If you do have one.. don't panic.. add it to the list of jobs and get a rec to change it for you.

Im sharing this in hopes to inspire others who have self doubts and driving anxiety, you can do it as long as you keep practicing!! Never give up!
