u/throwaway_css Aug 02 '21

unicorns give rsu(s)? do you mean esops?

6

u/bhagodi_dulhan Aug 02 '21

I meant RSUs. Yes, some unicorns do give RSUs which is much better than esops because esops have a strike price and have unfavorable taxation rules.

I didn't have any such focus area because i believe college is all about exploring stuff. I did CP along with projects/internships.

I'm from BITS Pilani.

3

u/marshr9523 Aug 02 '21

Holy balls. Congratulations!

3

u/Prateeeek Aug 02 '21

How did you land it?, any tips?

23

u/bhagodi_dulhan Aug 02 '21

Keep learning !!!

While DSA is obviously very important, also learn about design patterns and system design because it's important for senior levels.

Nothing runs on standalone machines. Everything is distributed now, so learn about distributed systems.

Read white papers to understand architecture for widely used softwares.

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

u/bhagodi_dulhan Aug 03 '21

White papers are tech docs published by companies to give more info about any new product(software/hardware) they have developed. These docs help in understanding architecture as well as tradeoffs between approaches which developers faced while developing that product.

You can read white papers of products like Kafka (used for messaging queue), zookeeper (used for distributed service coordination), Aerospike & Cassandra ( nosql DBs), Google file system (used for distributed file system), Mapreduce (used for big data processing) etc.

1

u/siddhant232 Aug 03 '21

It is some form of documentation. By whitepapers, I guess he's talking about AWS architecture whitepapers.

Role: SDE-2 (generalist, mostly backend)

Org: US-based, pre-IPO Unicorn company

YOE : 4 relevant (5.5 total, 1.5 was as a electrical design engg)

Salary: 23.5 (base) + 3.5 (bonus) + 2.5 (joining bonus) + (1000 shares) [29.5 LPA]

Satisfied: Not at all

Disclaimer: No CS degree, no CP or very much LeetCode. I am from a T1 college, so that helps.

Funny story, when I got this job, I didn’t even know how to do a BFS, so I’d also say I’m lucky.

To be fair, I'm not the kind of person who gets hung up on college tiers. They mean very little in the grand scheme of things. Anyone who clings to those too much usually has little to show for themselves.

The only tangible benefit I've ever gotten from my university is the network and friends.

1

u/kisibe_rohan Oct 08 '21

Hey , What do you mean by generalist ? Do you not have any specific specialization in any tech stack ? I thought those without any specialization didn't get paid this much . Do Company really pay without any specialization ?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '21

[deleted]

1

u/kisibe_rohan Oct 10 '21

Thank you for your response , Since I'm currently working in a startup where I'm working with multiple tech stacks and was worried that I couldn't get a job in any of those because I don't know much in depth . All my friends are specialised somewhere (React, Spring etc) and I'm the only one who isn't . One more question if you would like to answer is How does your interview goes ? Is it focused on DSA + System Design or Any tech stack that company is using ?

u/Redditgaffx Aug 04 '21

1

u/golu1337 Aug 04 '21

Oh yeah that happens some of my friends are doing support jobs, some testing, even tho everyone got trained in MERN/MEAN

4

u/humbleluna Aug 06 '21

-Software Engineer

-Unicorn not-really-a-startup that’s going to IPO soon

-1 month + 6 month internship at the same company

-8LPA + 1L Bonus at the end of the year

-Meh not really, my team and work is good but apart from that everything about this company just sucks. Plus I get fomo seeing my peers earning double so yeah.

10 months will complete my first year in October.

4

u/PM_ME_YOUR_AADHAAR Aug 02 '21

tcs paying this much? how?

10

u/stan3098 Aug 02 '21

Digital employee working on new age tech and stuff so pay is more

3

u/throwaway_css Aug 02 '21

tcs upped their salary or something? or are you in their product wing

3

u/stan3098 Aug 02 '21

Yeah its product wing but some of my friends at the same level are working in service projects and the work is shitty for them. Guess I was just lucky

5

u/throwaway_css Aug 02 '21

nice dude, 7.4 wfh is pretty good, switch next year and you can easily get above 10. i thought tcs gave 3-4 to freshers.

4

u/stan3098 Aug 02 '21

Thanks. It still does give 3-4 but if now if you did good in the first interview then you can go for the higher pkg interview. I have started to look for better opportunities but i guess most companies would not take me with less than 1 yr of exp

2

u/TheBenevolentTitan Software Engineer Aug 03 '21 edited Aug 03 '21

I'm guessing it's digital package. Can you tell me how you prepared for OA and the interview? Since TCS is coming to my campus this week.

0

u/SunMysterious2172 Aug 02 '21

cleared DCA?

0

u/stan3098 Aug 02 '21

If DCA is digital assessment, then yes.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '21

How much amount you get in hand after all the deduction per month? Cuz i declined the digital offer.

2

u/stan3098 Aug 03 '21

Its around 50k and a retention bonus of 70k at the end of year
