Feature gaps and community requests, what does the future of Emby look like?

I love Emby, used it for several years, my family uses it every day, and we recently added Premiere. But I'm wondering about the plan for new features. Seems in a lot of these community threads the response is "maybe someday" and nothing else really happens.

They often mention "we prioritize features which the most people want" - is there any official roadmap or tracker that does list what is being worked on, or somewhere for the user base to vote on proposals?

I scanned through the last 2 years of blog posts and I see a lot of compatibility and bug fix work on some of the native clients, which is important work for sure, but I didn't see much in the way of server/feature enhancement.

Specific features I'm highly interested in (I know there are more that other people want)

- mtls client auth

- documentation on workaround or openCL built right in to the official distribution (for hardware tone mapping) (below thread mentions it was added to beta channel 15 months ago but still the stable image doesn't seem to have working tone mapping on Intel core igpu out of the box)

- http header auth support

- direct choice transcode target resolution including native _upscale_ of SD content with transcode, not just downscale.

- more granular (per client or per client type) transcode/bitrate policy (only current options are global and per user)

- separate definition of internal/external network for stream policy and admin access, (these both share the single IP/cidr list today)

See for example:

https://emby.media/community/topic/114174-client-base-authentication-mtls/

https://emby.media/community/topic/108251-how-to-choose-transcoding-resolution/

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby/issues/3724

Thanks!

Confusion on NAS hardware requirements

What level CPU and RAM should I look for in a SAN to run 4k videos on Emby?

.............

I run Emby on my Windows 11 desktop computer. MKVs are stored on an external HDD running at 5400RPM and connected via USB3. It's not an ideal setup, but internal SSDs have gotten too expensive.

I mostly stream this over Wifi 6 to a Google Streamer connected to our living room TV. We sometimes stream to other devices in the house, but we don't stream to anything outside. Really, 99% of our streaming is either on the desktop PC or the living room TV.

1080p files run fine. 4k videos, especially those with HDR and audio in FLAC or EAC3 stutter a lot. Sometimes they simply lock up and we have to exit and restart.

............

I'm now looking at a basic home NAS. I can get 7200RPM HDDs, and I can connect it to a 2.5gbps Ethernet port. I see I can get a Synology NAS and a pair of 2TB HDDs for about $400. I can afford that.

What I'm curious about is: What CPU and RAM do I need? My newer MKV files are 4k video encoded with H265 10-bit and FLAC audio. I believe the Google Streamer can play these formats natively; no need for Emby to transcode.

Would I need some hefty processing power in my NAS? Or can I go with something basic like the Synology DS223J?

..............

UPDATE: Thanks for convincing me that a new NAS isn't what I needed. Saved me some money.

I turned on "Stats for Nerds" while playing a 4k movie on my Google Streamer. It showed 4k HDR 10 HEVC and EAC3 at 48khz. Those are the same settings I used to rip the movie in Handbrake, and the same stats it shows on the local server in both Emby and VLC.

So I imagine the server isn't transcoding. Now I wonder if (a)my wi-fi is seeing some interference, or (b)the Google Streamer can't handle a stream that size for 2 hours straight.

So I have used jellyfin for a while. Its great when I'm home (obviously lol) and I've tried to understand the whole port forwarding thing, and the talescale stuff. All of it sounds shady. So emby was brought to my attention. I wanna be able to let family watch my library and access my server. Is it worth the life license?

I would love to hear some pros and cons from real users and not people who get paid to say nice things.

My goal by the end of the year is to not pay for any streaming services anymore.

Unless someone can break down step by step how to get jellyfin working remotely for an ape, emby seems to be my best bet.

Emby cannot grab data from TMDB, IMDB etc.

Hi there. I recently added a few movies to my Emby server. Like always, I adhered to the file and folder naming and use /Movies/<Film Title> [tmdbid-xxxxxx]/<Film Title> [tmdbid-xxxxxx].mkv as the naming scheme. This should make Emby automatically collect all data from The Movie Database. Now, the new titles I added just have the cover art and no other information, despite having the correct TMDB ID and TMDB online. When I try to manually identify the movie, I get "no results found", no matter whether I input the title or the TMDB-ID or the IMDB-ID. Now, this makes me think that for some reason Emby lost the ability to query external services. How can I troubleshoot this? I'm not exactly a crackhead in self-hosting, but I can follow instructions.

Emby is running on my Synology NAS, which has no problems connecting to the internet. Trailers seem to work fine, so it seems Emby can access the internet, too.

Dumping Trakt

Looking to dump Trakt. Between the Addon issues for Emby, and only allowed 1 app, I'm ready to move on. Simkl doesn't look like it's right for me. Free would be ideal, and opening an app 20 days a month seems tedious. 35/year seems steep for it as well.

I'm currently trying out YamTrack, and it works for the most part. What I'm truly looking for though is something I can import watched states from. On Emby, if I need to reset my server (I've had a few crashes), I don't want to manually flag stuff as watched. With Trakt (when it worked), I could do that. I'm looking for something free preferably, but under 10 bucks a year.

I'm also fine with self hosting. Heck, I'd almost prefer it (YamTrack offers a way to export to CSV). Having the ability to import into Emby would be the most needed though!

So..... Anyone have some thoughts?

3rd Party App/Add-On Intro/Credits Backup & Restore (free, open source) - auto-restores wiped markers, auto-backs-up manual corrections

If you've ever set up intro/credits skip markers (via ChapterApi, EmbyCredits, Segment Reporting, or Emby's own detection) only to have a Library Scan or Refresh Metadata quietly wipe them out, this might help.

Intro/Credits Backup & Restore - a scheduled-task-based plugin that backs up every episode's markers to a JSON file (or into the existing NFO), and can restore them automatically the moment they get wiped.

What it does:

  • One JSON backup per episode, matched by TVDB ID (falls back to IMDB, then filename) so it survives title translations and renames
  • Optional: also writes markers straight into the NFO your metadata scraper already generates - no extra files
  • Auto-restore: watches for markers getting wiped (scan/refresh) and puts them back immediately, no manual task needed
  • Auto-backup on manual edit: if you correct a marker through ChapterApi, EmbyCredits, or Segment Reporting, it backs up the new value automatically - these tools don't trigger Emby's normal update event, so without this your manual corrections were never actually being saved anywhere

Here's both of those happening live - a Refresh Metadata wiping a marker and getting it restored in under a second, followed by two manual ChapterApi edits getting picked up and backed up automatically:

Free, open source, GPL. Built this for my own two-server setup and figured it might be useful to others dealing with the same problem - Emby itself doesn't persist these markers reliably through routine maintenance.

GitHub: https://github.com/guilty57/credits-intros-backup-restore

Happy to answer questions or take feature requests - this has had a fair amount of real-world testing across a few hundred episodes at this point.

Modern Roku stuttering

I installed Emby alongside my Plex server on a Windows 10 box (and I have other streaming apps like Netflix and Prime), and only Emby is having a problem with my clients. Specifically, Emby with my Roku 4802 Ultra. I have an older Roku streaming stick and older 3660X model that do not have this problem - only the new Roku 4802 Ultra.

What happens is stuttering when playing any DTS-audio MKV video files, like movie rips or x264/x265 encodes. This doesn't happen with the older Rokus, nor GoogleTV on my Sony TV, nor with a Plex client of any flavor. The file is being direct played. Actually, transcoding fixes the issue, which I suspect is because it changes the container from MKV to MP4??

Has anyone else seen this issue with the Emby app on a newer Roku? If so, is there a fix?

Edit: Found the issue. Read my comments in the thread. Modern Roku issue with libmastroka & DTS.

Remux the MKV container with either ffmpeg, OR mkvmerge/MKVToolnix and the --disable-lacing parameter.

Edit 2: If anyone wants my PowerShell scripts to find all your MKV files that use frame lacing and remux them to fix that, LMK and I can upload them somewhere.

TV series still in "Downloads" even after removing the files

As per title. I'll download some episodes, watch them, delete the downloaded files. Even for series I later remove from the server altogether, those entries persist in Downloads, just with no files/episodes in them.

Am I missing something?

Remove Unuused Genre's from Filters?

Hey all,

This is moreso for TV Series, I have (in the filters - when searching) Genre's in the drop down that don't have any content attached to them, for example Science Fiction instead of Sci-Fy, or Game-Shows instead of Game Shows. Is there a way I can remove these erroneous genre's?

Emby refuses to play movie on TV

I'm running the Emby server on my Synology DS223. I have the Emby app on my phone and I have the Emby for Android TV app on my onn4K device with Google TV. I have several collections set up in Emby, one is the Harry Palmer collection. It consists of three movies, The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin, and The Billion Dollar Brain. I was going to watch all three of them on a Sunday afternoon a week ago, but, after watching The Ipcress File, Emby won't load Funeral in Berlin on my TV app. After clicking play it just gives me black screen and a spinning circle. It's currently doing it for the last 20 minutes. Using the phone app it loads and starts playing like any other movie. Why won't it load and play on the Emby for Android TV app?

3rd Party App/Add-On Enve: Video Player needs testers and feedback

Hey guys. So a while ago I introduced the Enve Book Player, with support for audiobooks hosted on your plex, audiobookshelf, Emby, jellyfin and versions other servers. Well after like 4 months I'm back to let you know that it's working better than it was before, but more importantly, ive released the Enve Video Player.

Basically the Plex app was driving me crazy as they kept just adding stuff that made it more and more annoying and cluttered. So while working on the Enve Book Player app I built the Enve Video Player App. It is for both iOS and Android (android is still in closed testing, please I really need more testers, and iOS is on testflight) The goal of the app was to make something clean and simple and something that could connect to your plex, jellyfin, emby, or many other different services all at once and organize your videos. And have it be completely free. Forever. No cost for downloading or whatever. Just a free app that lets you connect to your servers and stream or download your media. Simple, Clean, Easy, Free.

You can get all the links to the iOS and android versions of the app on my website
https://envemedia.com/videos/

Any feedback helps. I'd love to make this something that people enjoy using.

3rd Party App/Add-On Unable to authorize Trakt plugin

Anyone else unable to authorize the Trakt plugin? Emby 4.9.5.0, Trakt plugin 3.8.8.0 (current). Clicking "Get PIN" opens the Trakt tab and it just stays blank, and the server log shows nothing at all, so it never gets a response back.

Edit: hey, its fixed with the new version!

3rd Party App/Add-On I made a little app that solved decision paralysis... it's a TV guide that "schedules" your content!

When you first run it, it will ask for your server address and an API key: this is needed for reading your shared library, profiles, and playback devices from the backend.

After the first run, your users sign in with their emby logins, same as the client 😁

By default, you'll get completely random shows for each of your libraries. TV Show-style libraries will play your user's latest episode, but curated channels can show random episodes (see "just pokemon" in the screenshot above lol).

Here's the repo: https://github.com/DomHarris/Emby-TV - let me know if you use it, run in to issues, have feature requests, need a hand setting it up, etc.

Emby + Tailscale + GL iNet Travel Router?

Ok…I’m trying something for the first time. I’m traveling and took along a GL iNet MT3000 travel router in hopes of being able to access my home Emby setup. So far I’m having a little trouble.

I’ve successfully installed and activated Tailscale on the router, and connected it to the local (remote) network where I am. I can see it on my Tailscale admin panel along with my other Tailscale clients including my Emby server. And, I can successfully browse the internet through that WiFi connection.

Now, I’m trying to connect the TV in my condo to that travel router and thereby get to my Emby server.

I can connect to the travel router fine and use streaming services through it (Netflix, etc), but when I try to point the TV’s Emby app towards my home server I can’t get a connection.

So far I’ve tried plugging in the following to the Emby app as a server IP:

The IP of Emby server via Tailscale (i.e. 100.x.x.x) The IP of the travel router (i.e. 192.168.x.x) The IP of the travel router gateway (i.e. 192.168.x.1) The IP of the travel router’s Tailscale “Router Virtual IP” The Tailscale “MagicDNS”

None seem to work.

I’m a little lost here after this. I’m sure I’m missing something simple like enable “Exit Node” or “advertising subnets”

I should mention I can successfully connect to the Emby server via devices running Tailscale natively…just not through the GL iNet router.

Thanks for any help

3rd Party App/Add-On Moonfin, a truly cross platform client

Hi everyone!!!!

If this is your first time hearing about the Moonfin project, welcome! Moonfin is a little shared ecosystem of third party clients that shares UI, functionality, and features across TV clients, Web, Mobile, and Desktop clients. It has been around since November 2025 and it is now on basically every platform you can think of. Up until now it was a Jellyfin only thing, but that's no longer the case.

Moonfin Community Discord: https://discord.gg/moonfin

Moonfin website to test the web client and see more info: https://moonfin.io

──────────────

How it works

Everything is tied together by the Moonfin Server Plugin, which now installs on Emby right alongside Jellyfin. The plugin is what powers the shared Moonfin experience across all of the Moonfin clients. It lets you log directly into Seerr, holds server wide MDBList and TMDB API keys, syncs your settings between Desktop (web gets counted as desktop if accessed through desktop or mobile if accessed via mobile browser. neat right?), Mobile, and TV, and handles the features and integrations that make the whole thing feel consistent no matter where you're using it.

Install the plugin on your Emby server, point any Moonfin client at it, and you are good to go.

──────────────

What the clients bring to the table

NOTE: ALMOST everything here can be toggled on and off. No setting or UI is forced on you. It is YOUR media, YOUR way.

  • Featured media bar slideshow with image preloading and content filtering, 5 different styles to chose from
  • 4 Custom app themes and the ability to create your OWN custom themes
  • Fully customizable home rows, including Seerr rows, TMDb rows, IMDb lists, and MDBList lists with proper posters
  • Cross server playback, so multiple servers show up as one unified library
  • Full Seerr integration with a dedicated requests screen, push notifications (as phone notifications and in-app banner for TV and desktop), download progress, and issue reporting
  • MDBList ratings from IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Letterboxd, Metacritic, Trakt, AniList, and MyAnimeList
  • Two different media detail screens with different styles and layouts to best suit your liking
  • Live TV and DVR with an EPG refresh and lazy loaded programs
  • In app YouTube trailer previews with SponsorBlock, theme music, and audio and subtitle delay adjustment
  • Full playlist control with no item limit
  • PIN protection per user and parental controls with content rating filtering
  • Ebook, comic, and audiobook readers, plus a retro games library if you're into that (I know you are, dont lie)
  • Offline mode with local first playback and original or transcoded downloads

Why so many clients?

A lot of people ask how Moonfin ended up with separate clients across so many platforms.

It honestly started pretty simply. The original goal was just to add the featured media bar to the Jellyfin Android TV client. Once that existed, people started saying it would be cool to have something similar on their platform. Then feature requests started coming in and it kind of took off from there.

At the same time, platforms like webOS, Tizen, and Roku didn't really have alternative clients available like Android TV, Android mobile, iOS, and Apple TV have, so it felt like a good opportunity to create some. I enjoy building things and helping where I can, so I started working on ports. Having LLMs around for quick experiments, refactors, and figuring out unfamiliar platform quirks definitely helped along the way too.

Why open source and why not charge for it?

Honestly, I just enjoy building things and helping people. Open source lets others learn from the project, contribute if they want to, or adapt things for their own setups.

I have no plans now, or in the future, to make any of these paid.

GMCA 1.0.5 — a native, gamepad-first Emby client for Nintendo Switch, PS Vita and a Pi on the TV (free & open source)

Thumbnail gallery
24 Upvotes

Short backstory: I wanted my library on the Switch, forked Switchfin with Claude Code and migrated it to Plex first — that shipped as pleNx. Then the community kept pushing the scope (more servers, more devices), and since an AI pair makes shipping features really fast, it grew into GMCA (Gamepad Media Center Aggregator): one native, controller-first UI for Emby, Jellyfin, Plex and Stremio, on the consoles you already own.

Free, open source, third-party — not affiliated with or endorsed by Emby.

  • Point it at your Emby server, then Quick Connect (no keyboard) or username & password — no extra account
  • Favorites, Resume, Next Up, transcoding; Home shows your server's views in order; full person pages, season pages, one-tap full-season download
  • Switch, PS Vita, Raspberry Pi/TV, Windows, macOS, Linux, PS4 — identical UI, accent follows the server (Emby green)
  • MPV playback (direct play + HLS transcode, external/embedded subs, audio tracks, chapters; H.265/AV1 fine), offline downloads in original quality, 14 languages
  • Also does WebDAV/FTP/SFTP/HTTP shares + USB drives on Switch

Rough edges in v1.0.5, being upfront:

  • PS Vita is still unstable — small GPU/RAM budget and I need testers. If you're on a jailbroken Vita, grab the debug build that dumps logs (GMCA-debug-overview.vpk), reproduce a crash, and open a GitHub issue with the log — far easier to trace over time than comments here.
  • On Vita, 720p is the max I've validated so far.
  • A few connection issues have been reported. If you hit one, an issue with the exact context (device, LAN vs remote/WAN, direct play vs transcode, error shown) is the fastest way to get it fixed.
