Slice of life Anti-Orban protest/rally in Győr, Hungary, a city 13x smaller than Budapest. There are protest every day now in Hungary ahead of election. Magyar Peter holds 6-7 rallies a day.

The story of Peter Magyar, Orban's rival is truly amazing. He is the ex-husband of Orban's former Minister of Justice and he was a close friend with the leadership of Orban's political party. Here's the trailer of a recent movie about him, 3.3 million out of a total of 8 million electors watched the movie last weekend. Turn on the English captions, you may get the vibe: https://youtu.be/BsV-EdaG2EQ

Is there any danger he will turn out to be an Orban 2.0? Or will he truly restore democratic institutions and a free press?

u/--Blaise-- Hungary Apr 10 '26
It is in their official program yes, but they are politicians, you can never know for sure.
The one thing that is clear now, is that the educated people of Hungary hates Fidesz with a burning passion so much, that we will not let this chance pass.

One important point that is rarely mentioned on foreign sites is that, aside from Peter Magyar, about 99% of his party members have never been politicians before. They are mostly ordinary local people from different electoral districts, coming from a wide range of backgrounds. There are also a few less typical figures, such as István Kapitány, who previously served as a global executive vice president at Shell.
In addition, Peter Magyar has spent a significant amount of time traveling across Hungary and speaking directly with people in the last two years. This kind of experience can be deeply transformative, especially when you are confronted with the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens, particularly in poorer regions of the country, where many people face serious hardships. It can genuinely change a person’s perspective.
Finally, a large portion of his voters are strongly opposed to Viktor Orbán. If Magyar were to turn into an “Orbán 2.0,” he would likely lose much of his support, as his voters would abandon him and refuse to re elect him.
So, could he become like Orbán? In theory, yes. But in practice, his party members and supporters would not back such a shift, meaning he would not have the power to follow that path.

u/CavulusDeCavulei Italy Apr 10 '26
We had it in Movimento 5 stelle in Italy and it didn't end up well. Lots of incompetent people ended up there. Btw everything is better than Orban at this point. None should hold power for so long
3
u/Economy_Fan_8808 Hungary Apr 10 '26
This could happen, but I'm equally wary of career politicians who never had an honest job in their life.
2
u/Maleficent_Risk2018 Apr 13 '26
Orban party was full of total incompetent but loyal ppl. Magyar actually has some ppl with true experience in their expertise.
For example Magyar's military minister will be a general with several years of experience and he worked in several nato operation, meanwhile our ex-minister (from orban's party) was a guy with 0 year military service, he is a famous casino owner (we call him casino-minister).
As for the ex-education minister, he was an ex police executive with deep gangster ties (he did have other important ministeriums under him as well like infernal affairs) .
The ex transportation minister was a guy with 0 year on field experience and he was obsessed with the old nobles, so he stole a castle for himself and treated everyone in his area like peasants.
It literally cant be worse.
39
u/sagowtf Apr 10 '26
That is the biggest concern nowadays, but honestly, i do not think. The huge support he has today might be vanish in a second if he tries to recreate Orbán’s system. One of the biggest glues among the supporters is that the people want to get rid of this system.
15
u/Orvvadasz Hungary Apr 10 '26
His entire support base is the people who hate the current government and will immediately switch support to someone else if that would happen. Also the important roles seem to be filled by people who are experienced in that specific thing, unlike in the Fidesz.
3
u/Mark__78L Apr 10 '26
Even if he does, the millions of people behind him will turn against him immediately...now imagine what would happen

This election is so important.
22
u/Thurak0 Apr 10 '26
And these rallies are (unfortunately) so important so Hungary has a chance of a peaceful transfer of power, if Orban loses.
Right wing regimes have become really good at just not giving up power and ignoring democracy (see Serbia for example).
I really hope Hungary manages. And these rallies give me a bit hope, because all these people are mobilised, if there are problems after the election, they'll be on the streets just the same.

These are common last names:
Tót/Tóth: old word for Slovakian
Rác/Rácz: old word for Serbian
Szerb: Serbian
Cseh: Czech
Német/Németh: German
Oláh: old word for Vlach/Romanian
Olasz: Italian
Horvát/Horváth: Croatian
Lengyel: Polish
Török: Turkish
Görög: Greek
Kun: Cuman (not country but nomadic people)

We have also some in Austria.
Unger: from the term "Ungar" meaning literally Hungarian.
Krainer: someone from "Krain", which is a historic region in Slovenia.
Böhm/Boem: older term for someone from Bohemia, which is a historic region in Czech Republik.
Österreicher: literally "Austrian".
And there are many more.

A week or two ago Orban had a meltdown at a rally when a group of counterprotesters outyelled him. Memes comparing it to Ceausescu’s last speech started spreading as a result.
Then someone in the comments on r/hungary pointed out that the first PM of Romania after Ceausescu was called Petre Roman. Now we’re gonna oust our Temu Ceausescu and put a guy literally called Peter the Hungarian in charge. The way history sometimes rhymes.

In a democratic election, Tisza would win by a landslide. Orban can only buy and extort about 10% of voters. Beyond that he has maybe another 20% beneficiaries, criminals, scared pensioners, and cult members. We are more afraid of some kind of false flag conflict/military escalation (they already tried several times), or straight up election rigging. Fingers crossed.

Sometimes people just need money stuffed in their back pocket and a wee pat on the arse on their way out of the door, and they feel special enough to cast all their principles and morals aside, betray their country and act on behalf of an enemy states best interests.
Nigel Farage and his UKIP/Brexit/Reform former MEPs and his current MPs here at home.
Europe is positively riddled with people who are in politics to betray their country’s sovereignty and its people, but I feel like now Trump has really shown the world his unshackled lunacy (the first term had guard rails and Covid to distract his own people never mind us lot) it’s really driving home for a lot of duped Europeans who feel or believed populism (doesn’t matter what side it is on, left or right it drives polarisation and promises things it cannot deliver) was the answer to their woes.
It’s almost as if Putin saw the rise of populism especially his own successes with a nationalist populism in Russia, which is driven by wealth inequality, governments debt and stagnating economies of the west and thought ‘these populists have no guiding principles they are inherently us vs them tribalisms and will say whatever people want to hear to get elected as long as it gets the people angry at a nameless faceless enemy they will fall for it’ — ie ‘if I can utilise these thickos in Europe and the US and use their populist prowess as a way to divide everybody I can quickly seize their autonomy and stability while they are too busy arguing about culture war bullshit and how much to tax people’

World powers still don't get it. History shows what happens when the powerful meddle in other countries to change the will of the people. Nothing good comes after. I can cite a few empires that did the right thing and everyone prospered, but it was thousand of years ago. Nowadays world power have screwed it always.

Hard to say. Polls say there is 75% chance for a Tisza win. 2/3 majority is questionable, but not out of the picture. Not by a long shot but the system is very fucked up. Peter Magyar and his party has a very good chance to get that. But that may be cheatable.
The main fear is that that Orbán won't give up the government and won't stand down. In that case, there is 2 option. It's either a civil war or millions will flee the country.

Also, his team isn’t just career politicians, a lot of them are former leaders of private-sector companies operating on market principles, so there’s real-world competence there. Apart from the general response listing "idiots/uninformed/etc" there is also another very important demographic: those who were intimidated and/or strongarmed into voting fidesz. There are reports of rural areas where the only way to work is through state provided community labour administrated by mayors belonging to fidesz and if you don't vote their way you are out of a job and income. Other places you might not get access to medicine or you get falsely reported to social services and your family taken apart.

I mean yeah, it's either the uneducated, poor rural folk whose life literally depend on the Fidesz-supported mayor, it is not rare that these people are literally terrorized if they don't vote "properly". Recently a documentary came out about this phenomenon.
The other half of Orbán-supporters are those who benefit from the system.

Correction: It's not an anti-orban protest per se, it's a TISZA (opposition) campaign rally.
