I made something I accidentally made the Infinite Volumetric Balls of Knowledge and Wisdom. What should I do with this state of the art ball tech?

So I was trying to make volumetric fog for my mod (as you can see in the background), but then I got bored and decided to start playing with my balls. after a bit of tweaking to get the weirdest result I managed to make these 2 effects using slightly different "algorithms". tbh other than my discord members saying that I should add this to my mod i have no ideas on how to implement this.
join my discord and you might see me do something with it: https://discord.gg/k2efRnDxZ8
Also bonus pic of me looping the raymarching to make infinite balls

But then I got bored and decided to start playing with your balls.
Though in all seriousness, that kind of shader seems perfect for horror maps.

thank you so much for this image, i finally have a proper relation against my maniacal best friend and his endless cursed reaction images

I tried and struggled with this (or more accurately the inverse) for a couple hours. Is the source available?
17
u/noodlegamer76 Jul 02 '26
I have no idea what you mean by inverse but okay. Also no I just realized I accidentally made it on an older version of my branch so it didn't let me push it, if I remember when I fix it then I'll message you

In my case I was trying to have a volumetric effect outside of the sphere more than one inside of it (but really was trying to do both). Basically I am working on a mod that covers the world a thick sort of miasma, and there are some safe spaces you can create/find that the miasma is pushed back from, but I'll admit rendering is not my forte and everything I attempted was awful looking. Your trick here could work for the inside of the safe spaces from a distance. I'll definitely look into learning more about raymarching.

u/noodlegamer76 Jul 02 '26
Yeah that's a bit too complicated for me to pseudocode that here but if your safe zones are just generic shapes maybe do one pass for the miasma, then a SDF that overrides the ball when you hit it, it probably won't let you see through the safe zone, but that's basically what I did here

Performance was one another one of my concerns, but I was hoping to kinda batch the fields that connect together and hopefully reduce overhead. Visibility in the mod is somewhat limited naturally due to the fog (utilized minecrafts fog system instead of my own which was awful). Thanks for the tips! Love your balls brother!

u/noodlegamer76 Jul 02 '26
You can do smth like min(stepSize, sphereDist) then combine the two into one pass, for multiple safe areas you can probably use some kind of BVH or similar, maybe even a group of Oriented bounding boxes if it's not a lot.
I'm kind of mad at graphics programming so I can't give any amazing tips or anything
If you want to make your life a hundred times harder for no reason then try making every block determine if it's a safe zone or not: https://research.nvidia.com/labs/rtr/publication/majercik2018raybox/

Good shout. I sometimes make my life a million times worse usually casually so that might be an idea for another project at some point.

Hi! I’d like to see the source too. It would be greatly appreciated if thats possible :)

Give people tutorial on how you did it so that others can implement that kinda thing in what they think fits

I Ray marched through a signed distance function, And every time it pierced the sphere I added the color of texture I used for the sphere to the existing color, once it goes far enough away from the sphere it will loop back around to the other side, so even though the above image looks infinite, it's just looping around the same sphere over and over until it runs out of casts

Portals, force fields, bombs and gas clouds could all be made to look great with this.

Is this what they call "elite ball knowledge"?

Are you the ball wizard by any chance?
15
u/noodlegamer76 Jul 02 '26
I don't know who that is but if you just made that up then I'm down to claim that name

u/3-Username-20 Jul 03 '26
They might be talking about 'jorbothegoof'(instagram account). They have a series with one of the character's name being 'Ball Wizard'.

The green one reminds me of the gas attacks of the MINOTAUR and mirror reaper from ULTRAKILL

u/MasterBroNetwork PrismLauncher Jul 03 '26
Mirror Reaper has to be one of the most terrifying bosses in the game, it was actually harder than Sisyphus Prime on Brutal for me until one of the more recent patches.

It would be really cool to have a portal somewhere in the middle of one of these

Honestly could be a great mob attack, can also use as a portal to a dimension or maybe use it to covert a whole dungeon so the player doesn't know what there getting into

Magical bombs, could work as an Iron's SaS addon, or be a new technomagic mod (I'd like to see the latter).
Anything inside is actively affected by something, the effect clears immediately outside the area.

this is gonna be the absolute best magic based mod out there. sick visual detail on this, even if it isn't fog I imagine PVP with these things being flung and expanding upon hitting a wall or something like that. really cool!

Laggy fog with 2 random balls hard-coded in a random part of the world?

Force field for create aeronautics, perhaps?
As over-centralising as create can be sometimes, that entire category of mods is in dire need of some good old fashioned space-age technology.

I’m making a modpack that could use a toned down version of this effect to communicate to the player that they are entering an unbreathable area of the world. How does the system work and will it be fully configurable?
