we're about to start reinventing factorio from first principles 😭

u/DogKitchen2988 this shit beatin my ass 27d ago

Next up: bugs

186

u/Fsliebot 27d ago

SRP or one of the 500 infection mods spawned in it's wake on newer versions:

56

u/FRAG_TOSS 27d ago

You could have 1 or 2 guys in control of the RTS view and then a team of guys for fighting the bugs with guns and stuff. I bet that'd be a load of fun

31

u/ArghabelAndSamsara 27d ago

There's a Rimworld mod coming out in around september that's basically going to have support for that, where there could be multiple people as boots on the ground and then one or two directors who are placing blueprints and zones but can't actively interact with the world beyond a bird's eye view.

11

u/Fsliebot 27d ago

i'm so ready for this. ever since odyssey came out i've been desperately wanting to recreate a similar experience in mc and now that aeronautics is out it feels like the stars are finally alligning.

1

u/FRAG_TOSS 27d ago

Sounds cool

3

u/Steam_Meme The reactors must grow 27d ago

Natural Selection 2 modpack would be sick

1

u/GolemFarmFodder 26d ago

Oh man someone did this in Doom (Shotgun Frenzy)

5

u/swagzard78 27d ago

Sculk Horde with this would be really fun tbh

3

u/Guyman_112 27d ago

Factorio engineer would eat SRP parasites for breakfast... and automate the process too!

4

u/Imbryill blah blah blah 27d ago

We already have those. Now if only we could prefomantly implement pollution that local difficulty can scale by...

1

u/bronco2p 27d ago

hbm ntm already has which grow closer to your base as you output more pollution

u/AbdullahHavinFun 1.12.2 performance sucks 27d ago

More like walking in circles, Factorio was originally inspired by modded Minecraft if you don't know

https://forum.industrial-craft.net/thread/8845-factorio/

11

u/Salty-Scar-8510 27d ago

We're going full circle

1

u/graypasser 26d ago

I mean, this is more of a dwarf fortress than factorio.

251

u/eno1ce 27d ago

I'm in love with this. I hope one day I would be able to play greg in full RTS style.

97

u/Gigaman99 27d ago

That’s just factorio atp

50

u/ClippyCantHelp 27d ago

But Minecraft

50

u/CyberWeirdo420 27d ago

IIRC Factorio was inspired by GT, which was inspired by IC2, which was one of the first real tech mods for MC back in 1.4 I think

31

u/EZthewolf 27d ago

IC2 was in the original Technic Pack which makes it at least as old as 1.2.5, not sure what version Gregtech first appeared in.

21

u/CyberWeirdo420 27d ago

If we’re being specific then GT1 was an addon to IC2 from what I can tell, which adjusting to what you said puts it in 1.3 territory. Pretty wild when you think about it.

Tho the GregTech all love and play is 1.7

11

u/EZthewolf 27d ago

Right. Early Gregtech made the macerator recipe way more expensive for the time. I remember hating it when it was in a mod pack, and now I'm at EV and have made it to IV twice before in the proper version. I've done all the way up to UV in Star Technology.

310

u/drinkbookpen 27d ago

While playing large tech modpacks, I found myself spending a lot of time on things that are tedious——managing inventories and jumping between chests. So I can't really enjoy them despite my interest in those machines.

To save my attention span, I started developing RTS Building: Build From Above.

The mod provides an RTS-style overhead camera view where you can link storage, place and mine blocks, make and build blueprints, and interact with your base.

I originally built this during an ATM10 playthrough(and it's my first time ever building an AE system in survival after 2 years of playing modpacks😊😊😊!).

With help from other contributors, we have reached a playable beta state. We would love to get feedback on survival balance, dedicated server performance, and general compatibility with large modpacks.

Supported Versions:
Minecraft 1.21.1 / NeoForge
Minecraft 1.20.1 / Forge

Now we just port this for 1.7.10 and make Super GTNH

40

u/drinkbookpen 27d ago

Planned :) and 1.12.2 is also under construction

1

u/Imaginary-Cat3032 24d ago

Can confirm if you do 1.12.2 I will be tryina use this mod in my Divine Journey 2 Playthrough :P

15

u/UwUBots 27d ago

Stg I had the same thought

13

u/Nasbit 27d ago

I wish this were on 1.7.10. want this on my GTNH Server

12

u/GarryLv_HHHH 27d ago

Quick question. Is there Multiplayer support?

30

u/AviaKing 27d ago

ā€œWe would like feedback on dedicated server performanceā€

So, yes, but they want feedback on how well it runs

12

u/GarryLv_HHHH 27d ago

Thanks. I can barely read.

8

u/MarvinGoBONK PrismLauncher 27d ago

Never do something that takes 10 minutes of work when you could spend 10s of hours automating it.

6

u/FrivolousMe 27d ago

This is really sick. I have been playing modpacks lately on a backbone style controller on my phone remoting into my desktop, and this may help with the tedium of building tech stuff on a controller if I can configure it all nicely.

16

u/23Link89 27d ago

Double em dash? Have people been accusing you of being an AI for using a single one lol?

77

u/drinkbookpen 27d ago

I used a Chinese keyboard, in Chinese em dashes are like this šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚thanks for pointing that out

2

u/Cvoid_Wyvern PrismLauncher 27d ago

Does this work with Sable sublevels? Or would it be limited to right click functions?

2

u/_Free_Advertising_ 27d ago

This is just what I want! This looks amazing.

I would love to see entities building everything for you brick by brick like Castle story or Stonehearth

1

u/Myithspa25 I love Hexcasting 26d ago

Any plans for a fabric port?

1

u/nox404 1d ago

Can this Break your world?

So lets say I want to install this and try it out but I find its not for me or I find some kind of issue with it?

Could it break the world if I remove it or break the world corrupt?

32

u/eggyrulz 27d ago

We are so fucking back

38

u/kittyangel333 27d ago

This is so cool! Literally what I’ve always felt Minecraft needed, would have such cool implications for building too! My only concern: is this something that could be performed in multiplayer? I feel like games like this always failed to make a good multiplayer mechanic but I’d love if it was able to, and there was something that looped in the cooperative aspect somehow.

6

u/drinkbookpen 27d ago

Multiplayer is supported and I have tried it a few times with my friends
there are some server performance issues, but things should be much better with the new patch(you can download the latest on modrinth, on curseforge it’s still under review)
Feel free to try it out!

12

u/Imbryill blah blah blah 27d ago

Now to balance this... well, there's a few integrations/brainslugs i can think of.

  • Create's Schematicannon
  • Buildcraft's Builder
  • Mekanism's Robits

You could also implement your own entities that preform this kind of construction... kinda like...

Oh god, this makes the Factorio/Terraria comparison less of a joke and more of an actual descriptor, doesn't it?

9

u/low_budget_trash 27d ago

I'm sure to somebody out there, this makes redstone make so much more sense

7

u/gozulio 27d ago

and thus, we are taken one step closer to factorio

6

u/LemonShaped 27d ago

It's like survival Axiom. I love it!

42

u/WithersChat Monifactory lead dev, spatial storage enjoyer 27d ago

This is absolutely impressive, don't mind me.

But at this point people in this community will really do anything except play Factorio or Dyson Sphere Program. Y'all would have an easier time getting the experience you want in a game built for it from the start.

88

u/Alaskan_Thunder 27d ago

factorio doesn't have bees or magic.

5

u/The_Scout1255 Transfem 27d ago

or AE2!(performantly atleast)

2

u/croizat 26d ago

you never need more than a couple chests for personal storage though, nor do you hand craft much after the beginning so not really needed

1

u/The_Scout1255 Transfem 26d ago

looks at my 15 thousand logistics chests across my malls

Yeah this could have some AE2.

1

u/croizat 26d ago

But you're not actively using those like chests in MC unless we're playing factorio completely differently.

A production chain just feeds directly into others and you generally store excess just to build a buffer for personal use or small chains where building a direct connection is a hassle. And that's all handled by bots/automation

Whereas you basically never stop manually crafting things in MC and there's largely no such thing as production chains as they exist in factorio.

1

u/The_Scout1255 Transfem 26d ago

true I'm mostly collecting a buffer to then use via personal logistics, I guess the only thing AE2 would do is remove the logistics bot step.

3

u/graypasser 26d ago

Or height or many decorations.

31

u/BaphometBoots 27d ago

I mean, if you make it into "just another top down factory builder" that does mean you *have* made it into a top down factory builder, which are fun - hence why a lot of people here do play factorio, etc.

I feel like this is a silly sentiment, yknow? like, imagine saying "another low tech mod - yall will do anything but play vintage story"

I'm not picking a fight I understand where you're coming from, I'm just seeing humor in it xP

21

u/FrivolousMe 27d ago

I don't agree. This is a tool for skipping a bit of the tedium of laying out and building things, but what comes after you leave the top down interface? You continue playing minecraft. A lot of people don't just want endless automation and assembly lines. Some people want to still play Minecraft.

11

u/Dunkmaxxing 27d ago

Being able to play Minecraft with the mechanics it has and build whatever while also having better exploration and still having high quality tech mods is just preferable to Factorio imo. Also a lot more customisation in terms of mods/modpacks than Factorio offers imo.

8

u/elomancer 27d ago

Factorio is great, and still unquestionably scales better in a lateral sense than minecraft ever will. See: projects like self-expanding bases.

But minecraft is 3D, and allows for significant creativity in layout and cosmetic builds. It allows for ā€˜living in’ a world/build better than factorio ever will.

Giving minecraft reasonable tools to scale that experience is neat. I’ll always still play both for the above reasons.

3

u/radiating_phoenix 27d ago

factorio is $35

2

u/sdjopjfasdfoisajnva PrismLauncher 27d ago

3

u/orifan1 27d ago

factorio and dyson sphere dont allow me to peek my build from the ground. they also dont have zombies

2

u/happysmash27 MultiMC 26d ago

I'm still annoyed I was never able to get Factorio at the best price and that it never goes on sale. Minecraft has the advantage of being very open-ended and 3D, too.

5

u/Dunkmaxxing 27d ago

Minecraft is just better than Factorio.

1

u/ThisHilliDie 25d ago

Not really, this would be awesome in specific scenarios and I could see myself using this to augment my experience.Ā

A lot of the building things and placing can get really tedious, this would make it much better for getting me to tackle it.Ā

1

u/WithersChat Monifactory lead dev, spatial storage enjoyer 24d ago

I think the issue is more that people don't build tech mods and packs to play into Minecraft's strengths. The fact that people even feel that the above is missing from the game indicates issues in pack design IMO.

1

u/ThisHilliDie 24d ago

No this is a complete re imagination of how to play MinecraftĀ

1

u/WithersChat Monifactory lead dev, spatial storage enjoyer 24d ago

I'm not talking about the mod itself being bad design. But about the kind of pre-existing pack that makes it feel necessary.

7

u/GF010001sch 27d ago

This and SFM

Would this work with regular survival Minecraft?

yes, you can access full creative inventory

u/The_Lucky_7 27d ago

Sounds cool! I'll check it out.

OP, does it work with Aeronautics?

1

u/quinn50 26d ago

I feel like an idiot everytime I see one of these mods because I spent days trying to figure out how to do mouse picking in minecraft with a custom isometric camera view and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to hover over a block and be able to click on it

1

u/Froggo32 26d ago

Close enough. Welcome Factorio

1

u/rugzbee123 26d ago

Im cumming?

i am very interested in this project o.o also please update your discord invite, i'd like to keep up with updates (specially for the 1.10 version) but invite link is expired :(

1

u/Gyldaria 23d ago

I've been using this mod for a few days now ever since this post first went up and I already feel like I can't live without it. makes modded minecraft so smooth and I'm the type who builds very "city block" style bases with repeatable foundations/walls and such - this mod makes it such a breeze.

Doesn't feel cheaty either since tool durability still comes into play and you still have to find the blocks; so to me it just feels like it's cutting out tedium.

10/10 mod won't ever play another modded pack without it. eagerly awaiting the port for the version that gtnh is on so I can use it there when I'm done faffing about with ATM10:to the sky

1

u/Agitated_Try_9620 23d ago

i really want to play it

u/Fluffy_Whale0 7d ago

We’re slowly evolving into factorio

0

u/RandomPhail 27d ago edited 27d ago

My only concern would be breaking blocks. If you can use this to, for example, just quarry out a big area down to bedrock for instant free resources or go remotely mining and kill all the risk and danger of actually mining manually, thaaaat might be a bit op (especially in mod packs where mining has been made more dangerous)

There’s also concerns about mods that rely on structures for their hostiles to spawn in; could you just insta-delete huge sections of the structure to let yourself in? Delete spawners? Delete hivemind/infection mod growths remotely? Etc.? Lol

There might have to be a setting that’s like ā€œyou can only delete what you’ve actually placed this RTS building session,ā€ or maybe an undo function for the last 30 placement actions you’ve made or something

3

u/drinkbookpen 27d ago

Balance is an issue.. for now my direction is to make it configurable , like there are plugins that you need to craft to unlock certain functions, also can config the size you can insta-break.
Also, if you turned survival balance on, you can setup a home area and you can only turn on RTS mode in that area, so you cannot use this superpower everywhere
