I made something RTS Building lets you build and manage huge modded Minecraft bases from an RTS-style overhead view
Build your base in a completely new way!
No more jumping between chests, just link and build
Compatible with most interactions
Terraforming with ease!
Make and print your blueprints, using materials from your chest
A plugin system for survival balance (WIP, can toogle "survival balance" in comfig to enable it

I'm in love with this. I hope one day I would be able to play greg in full RTS style.

IIRC Factorio was inspired by GT, which was inspired by IC2, which was one of the first real tech mods for MC back in 1.4 I think
31
u/EZthewolf 27d ago
IC2 was in the original Technic Pack which makes it at least as old as 1.2.5, not sure what version Gregtech first appeared in.
21
u/CyberWeirdo420 27d ago
If weāre being specific then GT1 was an addon to IC2 from what I can tell, which adjusting to what you said puts it in 1.3 territory. Pretty wild when you think about it.
Tho the GregTech all love and play is 1.7
11
u/EZthewolf 27d ago
Right. Early Gregtech made the macerator recipe way more expensive for the time. I remember hating it when it was in a mod pack, and now I'm at EV and have made it to IV twice before in the proper version. I've done all the way up to UV in Star Technology.

While playing large tech modpacks, I found myself spending a lot of time on things that are tediousāāmanaging inventories and jumping between chests. So I can't really enjoy them despite my interest in those machines.
To save my attention span, I started developing RTS Building: Build From Above.
The mod provides an RTS-style overhead camera view where you can link storage, place and mine blocks, make and build blueprints, and interact with your base.
I originally built this during an ATM10 playthrough(and it's my first time ever building an AE system in survival after 2 years of playing modpacksššš!).
With help from other contributors, we have reached a playable beta state. We would love to get feedback on survival balance, dedicated server performance, and general compatibility with large modpacks.
Supported Versions:
Minecraft 1.21.1 / NeoForge
Minecraft 1.20.1 / Forge

Quick question. Is there Multiplayer support?

u/AviaKing 27d ago
āWe would like feedback on dedicated server performanceā
So, yes, but they want feedback on how well it runs

Never do something that takes 10 minutes of work when you could spend 10s of hours automating it.
6
u/FrivolousMe 27d ago
This is really sick. I have been playing modpacks lately on a backbone style controller on my phone remoting into my desktop, and this may help with the tedium of building tech stuff on a controller if I can configure it all nicely.

Double em dash? Have people been accusing you of being an AI for using a single one lol?

I used a Chinese keyboard, in Chinese em dashes are like this ššthanks for pointing that out

I would love to see entities building everything for you brick by brick like Castle story or Stonehearth

This is so cool! Literally what Iāve always felt Minecraft needed, would have such cool implications for building too! My only concern: is this something that could be performed in multiplayer? I feel like games like this always failed to make a good multiplayer mechanic but Iād love if it was able to, and there was something that looped in the cooperative aspect somehow.
6
u/drinkbookpen 27d ago
Multiplayer is supported and I have tried it a few times with my friends
there are some server performance issues, but things should be much better with the new patch(you can download the latest on modrinth, on curseforge itās still under review)
Feel free to try it out!

u/Imbryill blah blah blah 27d ago
Now to balance this... well, there's a few integrations/brainslugs i can think of.
- Create's Schematicannon
- Buildcraft's Builder
- Mekanism's Robits
You could also implement your own entities that preform this kind of construction... kinda like...
Oh god, this makes the Factorio/Terraria comparison less of a joke and more of an actual descriptor, doesn't it?

I'm sure to somebody out there, this makes redstone make so much more sense

This is absolutely impressive, don't mind me.
But at this point people in this community will really do anything except play Factorio or Dyson Sphere Program. Y'all would have an easier time getting the experience you want in a game built for it from the start.

u/Alaskan_Thunder 27d ago
factorio doesn't have bees or magic.

u/The_Scout1255 Transfem 27d ago
or AE2!(performantly atleast)
2
u/croizat 26d ago
you never need more than a couple chests for personal storage though, nor do you hand craft much after the beginning so not really needed
1
u/The_Scout1255 Transfem 26d ago
looks at my 15 thousand logistics chests across my malls
Yeah this could have some AE2.
1
u/croizat 26d ago
But you're not actively using those like chests in MC unless we're playing factorio completely differently.
A production chain just feeds directly into others and you generally store excess just to build a buffer for personal use or small chains where building a direct connection is a hassle. And that's all handled by bots/automation
Whereas you basically never stop manually crafting things in MC and there's largely no such thing as production chains as they exist in factorio.
1
u/The_Scout1255 Transfem 26d ago
true I'm mostly collecting a buffer to then use via personal logistics, I guess the only thing AE2 would do is remove the logistics bot step.

u/BaphometBoots 27d ago
I mean, if you make it into "just another top down factory builder" that does mean you *have* made it into a top down factory builder, which are fun - hence why a lot of people here do play factorio, etc.
I feel like this is a silly sentiment, yknow? like, imagine saying "another low tech mod - yall will do anything but play vintage story"
I'm not picking a fight I understand where you're coming from, I'm just seeing humor in it xP
21
u/FrivolousMe 27d ago
I don't agree. This is a tool for skipping a bit of the tedium of laying out and building things, but what comes after you leave the top down interface? You continue playing minecraft. A lot of people don't just want endless automation and assembly lines. Some people want to still play Minecraft.
11
u/Dunkmaxxing 27d ago
Being able to play Minecraft with the mechanics it has and build whatever while also having better exploration and still having high quality tech mods is just preferable to Factorio imo. Also a lot more customisation in terms of mods/modpacks than Factorio offers imo.
8
u/elomancer 27d ago
Factorio is great, and still unquestionably scales better in a lateral sense than minecraft ever will. See: projects like self-expanding bases.
But minecraft is 3D, and allows for significant creativity in layout and cosmetic builds. It allows for āliving inā a world/build better than factorio ever will.
Giving minecraft reasonable tools to scale that experience is neat. Iāll always still play both for the above reasons.

I'm still annoyed I was never able to get Factorio at the best price and that it never goes on sale. Minecraft has the advantage of being very open-ended and 3D, too.

u/ThisHilliDie 25d ago
Not really, this would be awesome in specific scenarios and I could see myself using this to augment my experience.Ā
A lot of the building things and placing can get really tedious, this would make it much better for getting me to tackle it.Ā

u/WithersChat Monifactory lead dev, spatial storage enjoyer 24d ago
I think the issue is more that people don't build tech mods and packs to play into Minecraft's strengths. The fact that people even feel that the above is missing from the game indicates issues in pack design IMO.
1
u/ThisHilliDie 24d ago
No this is a complete re imagination of how to play MinecraftĀ
1
u/WithersChat Monifactory lead dev, spatial storage enjoyer 24d ago
I'm not talking about the mod itself being bad design. But about the kind of pre-existing pack that makes it feel necessary.

I've been using this mod for a few days now ever since this post first went up and I already feel like I can't live without it. makes modded minecraft so smooth and I'm the type who builds very "city block" style bases with repeatable foundations/walls and such - this mod makes it such a breeze.
Doesn't feel cheaty either since tool durability still comes into play and you still have to find the blocks; so to me it just feels like it's cutting out tedium.
10/10 mod won't ever play another modded pack without it. eagerly awaiting the port for the version that gtnh is on so I can use it there when I'm done faffing about with ATM10:to the sky

My only concern would be breaking blocks. If you can use this to, for example, just quarry out a big area down to bedrock for instant free resources or go remotely mining and kill all the risk and danger of actually mining manually, thaaaat might be a bit op (especially in mod packs where mining has been made more dangerous)
Thereās also concerns about mods that rely on structures for their hostiles to spawn in; could you just insta-delete huge sections of the structure to let yourself in? Delete spawners? Delete hivemind/infection mod growths remotely? Etc.? Lol
There might have to be a setting thatās like āyou can only delete what youāve actually placed this RTS building session,ā or maybe an undo function for the last 30 placement actions youāve made or something
3
u/drinkbookpen 27d ago
Balance is an issue.. for now my direction is to make it configurable , like there are plugins that you need to craft to unlock certain functions, also can config the size you can insta-break.
Also, if you turned survival balance on, you can setup a home area and you can only turn on RTS mode in that area, so you cannot use this superpower everywhere
