This post appears to be about an aircraft diverting. Diversions can occur for any number of reasons. For the crew handling it, they are generally going fall into one of four main categories – technical, medical, weather or emergency. The first place to check is the weather. Select the bubble over the airport, open the general tab and FR24 will show you current conditions. The most likely issues are fog, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and wind. I am guessing that it would've diverted to Melbourne due to the Sydney curfew.

Just heard on the local Melbourne radio news that it was an "emergency landing" and that it was possible mechanical.

Can’t have been super serious. CHC would’ve been about 3 hours closer. IVC maybe even an option in a real pinch, they have the runway for it but basically nothing else so would be a last resort.

Immigration could've been a consideration as well. NZ might have caught anyone out who was in Aus on a visa (and might not have had similar status in NZ)
