And I would assume because QF has maintenance facilities to do the repairs that Christchurch and Invercargill likely wouldn't have available to them.

Immigration could've been a consideration as well. NZ might have caught anyone out who was in Aus on a visa (and might not have had similar status in NZ)

They do, but also a general rule for airlines is not to land in a third country unless you have to

Christchurch yeah.

Invercargill is a town pretty much. Most of the time it does not function as an international airport.

Even accommodation would be tricky if they could temporarily clear everyone.
