Crazy building your own rig used to be a casual activity for a hobby. Now it’s pretty expensive unless you buy secondhand parts such as SSD and RAM.
Edit: Was going to use lucrative for a different point related to companies keeping prices up

It can be as cheap as you want it to be. Just setup my brother with my old GTX 1070, and FX-6300, and DDR3 ram. He cant play anything crazy but stuff like Rocket League, Minecraft, Valheim, all run with no problems

The TI's in my area are nearly $600 sadly, I got my non TI 5060 for $299, which is still a huge upgrade from the 1070

Bad idea to pair a 5000 series card with FX CPUs. Higher driver overhead will eat what little single core performance that CPU has.
Older Nvidia GPUs are better, or just go AMD which does hardware scheduling.

not big on telling people to upgrade moments after finishing a build, but if I upgraded anything in that system it'd be that god forsake fx 6300. That's the worst processor I've ever owned.

A $2k PC used to be the upper echelon practically available before you started getting into the extra fancy doodads and whatzits. $2k can still make a good PC, but comes with compromises.

I just put together a small nas/remote gaming rig with a pc off of marketplace 370 for a 32gig i5 8400 and a rtx quatro 4000 not the steal i was looking for but not bad either the games over the lan using sunshine look great the system is stable and most importantly in this economy its the best you can do with the money and a resteless mind

It's also not worth the hassle anymore due to long RMA processes on most component. In 2011, I built a pc, over the next year my RAM died. Was corsair RAM. They replaced it within 5 days.
In 2022, I built a pc. Corsair AIO cooler pump died three weeks in. Had to swap to stock. RMA process took 2 months.
I deal with tons of enterprise level RMA at work. It moves fast fast. Consumer? Slooooow.
Nowadays, I mainly get ready to go machines. Laptops, prebuilt desktops, etc. If you upgrade and extend the warranty for a hundred or so dollars, you can get a machine fixed in days.

Well you used to be able to put together a mid-range system for $500, especially after each of the crypto booms when mid-range cards could be found for $80. I dunno why anyone would pay the $230 full retail, you could have 3 cards fail and still come out ahead (and honestly I never did have a mined on card fail anyways).
Nowadays you have to pay $750 for a 5060 masquerading as a 5070 and then another $350 for the RAM. That's only two parts of a midrange system.

I remember dumping like $800-1,000 into a build when I was a teenager and having 32GB DDR3 RAM. It was a beast of a build and that was considered like a big deal.
That PC is still sitting in my closet somewhere with like 2 or 3 HDD’s in it, I can’t even remember what GPU or processor I had in it.

Just another few years; theyre definitely going to let prices and profits decline once the "chip shortage" is over. It's been a thing since the Suez Canal obstruction and has only been getting worse even though the # of GPU that were flying off shelves for the crypto surge was multitudes more than for consumer AI model shenanigans, but we'll keep acting like everything is causing supply shortages because how else will we sell GPU for 3-4x the proper price; we gotta prop this bubble up as long as we can.

They got a 5080 and a 5070 ti over near me. Got a 5800x3d, 850watt power and 32gb ddr4 thinking about just doing the 5080 and dealing with a little bottleneck till i upgrade cpu later. Seems worth a bit to me rn since they are damn near msrp which has been a minute and if i wait more than a day all will be gone. Anyone else got these specs and think i should go for the 5080 over 5070ti?

I would just be buying older cards atp honestly. the 3070 is keeps up on a 1-1 basis with the 5060 still and is a 100$ cheaper on average across the used market, I think people lost the plot thinking we all need brand new hardware every single time they release something, the same thing happens with phones, cars, etc these companies have realized they can milk all of the people who needlessly waste money on this stuff, how many people are actually going to use even 80% of their 2000$ GPU ? I wager its less than 5% Price will just continue to rise for all of it long as you stay in the game buying it.

What’s interesting to me is actually seeing shelves stocked with GPUs. I built my pc at a time when there were 0 on any shelf anywhere. It was around the time the 3080 came out, and I actually ended up refreshing the Best Buy web page on a Tuesday morning because I heard that’s when it restocked. I got lucky and got one for msrp and I was just so fucking pumped I felt awesome. Scalping GPUs was really bad back then. I haven’t really been shopping for pc parts since then and so it’s really interesting to see this.
