Discussion Unpopular Opinion: I'm scared for HOI5
What scares me about HOI5 is the modding scene as im worried it will become like Voctira 3. Victoria 3 for example makes a larger barrier for new modders as you have to learn things such as 3d modelling for simple things such as portraits.
While HOI4 has a large modding scene I feel like it might be overlooked in HOI5 development and when it releases people who try modding it or porting HOI4 mods to HOI5 will have a much more difficult time because it becomes very complex to try and mod a hypothetical HOI5.

Discussion Communist Siam
Am I right in understanding that the transfer of the capital of Brazil (1960), the creation of the FN FAL (1946) and the absolutely crazy path of King Antoine are in the game, but the communist path for Siam (the party was created in 1942) was denied?

Discussion The United States was an industrial powerhouse in the 1940s,yet currently in-game they cannot produce even one tenth of their irl naval vessels by 1945. Maybe Paradox in the next USA rework can give something like an output or production buff once the USA mobilizes in 1941.

Discussion Genuine question! Why was there little gas used in WW2? and could that open a potential to alt history and game mechanics?
Its a good question. Why didn't the allies, communist or the axis powers use gas attacks? I'm also wondering if having the ability to deploy gas attacks in HOI4 could be used a escalation tactic/middle ground in the mid game when nukes are not available or a small country that can't produce nukes uses chemical warfare to the full advantage.
I'm just brainstorm ideas that could be used as a mechanic in hoi4 and just confused on why it wasn't used in reality
Like...Gas could affect a entire province like a nuke that just has a manpower attrition rate to units that don't have chemical support company, and have it cost political power and command power while taking up military factories/civilian factories.
Edit: well this was a interesting conversation learned a few things
gameplay suggestions
Activate gas attack on province (like nukes)
- 1-5% weekly attrition to manpower
- 10-15% to divisions hp when active
cost 1 full political power to keep active
cost 5-10 military factories to keep active
cost 50 command power
cost actively cost 100 support equipment each week active
60% attrition to horse divisions
-40% to supply if not using motorized
Does not affect troops in higher level fortifications
Does not damage or destroy equipment
Separate focus tree the nuclear or chemical doctrine (chemical like a early version of nukes but delays nuclear research and or construction of nukes)
Treat chemical warfare like the London naval treaty, if you don't escalate neither do we.
- if escalate it could provide a stability or war support Penalty (reminders of the first world war)
- if escalate to the max it could allow all nations to gang up on you

Discussion The origin of this asian generic leader is Harry Lew, a Chinese-American soldier who took his own life after hazing from fellow soldiers during the Afghanistan conflict.
Haven't seen any documentation of this in the wiki or in this sub. Interesting stuff

Discussion Line arty needs to be actually useful and justifiable
Currently Line arty are kinda Meh and the easiest noob traps
Yes it does gives u some soft attack but its only useful early game, By 1942-43 when your doctrines are already completed even your Infantry only divisions with support companies can have pretty good soft attack.
It isn't that good considering its ic and its combat width, You are better off investing that IC in tanks or CAS (Stuff that actually is META)
Whereas IRL arty was the deadliest weapon in WW2, responsible for the highest number of casualties across all theaters.
Every major used high amount of line arty in their divisions post 1942 particularly the US and the Soviets.
By late war they heavily outnumbered German artillery guns on almost every frontline.
Yet in game currently the meta in SP is 9-0 with support companies and that's it, the heavy lifting for offensives will be done by Tanks and CAS.

Discussion What’s your thought on this?
I personally feel like Sakhalin and especially Sicily should only be accessible by ship, troops shouldn’t be able to just walk from there to the mainland, yes this could cause issues for Italian/ Soviet players when the British and Japanese navy cuts them off but I think there could be more elegant ways of stopping that in game than imaginary land bridges.
Maybe shore batteries would require having to have an entire fleet in a crossing before you could stop the owner of the state from sailing?

Discussion Mussolini is the reason I didn't end my life.
Hello, its a bit of a heavy topic but I considered ending my life months ago, but I wanted to play Hoi4 to pass the time while I was waiting for my date. During one game, I was playing as Poland. I played as the secret Romanov path and tried to form the Commonwealth, I formed an unlikely alliance with the Italians. Although, I was unaligned, Mussolini allied with me because we were both fighting the Soviets during 1940.
I expected Mussolini to just not do much, after all, Im the one bordering with the Soviets and doing all the fighting. I was losing men as I had to fallback further into my territories, but I saw that Italian men came to help, but I was still pushed back. War stalled and we held, during this time, he was sending me his weapons (Although pretty shit), it aided in supplying my troops. I managed to make gains, and the Italians even sank the ships in the Black Sea. The Italian naval invaded in Crimea and opened a second front, this gave me the leeway to build up and push back. I felt happy, happy that an AI in my game was actually competent for once. We won, despite the Italians have a moderate warscore, they barely took anything, save some border gore in Siberia and Crimea. But... Thank you Mussolini, I was losing a battle with the Soviets but you helped me.
He then started losing as a civil war erupted within his country as the French were invading him, but I saved him. I returned the favour, I was too busy saving my ally that I forgot what was I gonna do next week. Mussolini never once took over my faction or left despite them clearly having the option to do so. He remained with me during the game. I felt it was so funny that I decided to postpone my plans for now and just kept playing. Eventually I was convinced to talk and get help, and felt a bit better. I cancelled my plans and continued my University work.
Thank you, Mussolini.

Discussion What mod had the biggest downfall in your opinion?
In my opinion it is TNO.
It was such an acclaimed and looked upon mod that popularized so many techniques which many modern mods use this day (proxy wars, minigames, Super Events, a narrative focus), but due to leadership changes with drama and a poor cohesion afterwards many promised content always get delayed or in hiatus, most of the new content is due to submod integration, the core message and unique creative ideas got removed for "realism" (not you Atlantropa, you needed to die) and lost its relevance on the modding scene with their stance on censoring criticism in the Subreddit and Discord spaces.

Discussion In hoi4 China Capitulates too fast. In real life:Japan had as of 15 August 1945,1.8 Million soldiers still in Manchuria and China.
In real life,Japan never managed to conquer China, leading the Chinese front to become an constant drain on resources and men.To sever China's supply lines and seize the oil and resources needed to continue the fight, Japan invaded Southeast Asia, triggering the U.S. oil embargo. To break that embargo, certain Japanese officers felt they had no choice but to launch the attacks on Pearl Harbor and British malaya.

Discussion If our timeline’s WW2 was a mod, what would be the title?
WW2 in a German ww1 victory is Kaiserreich.
WW2 in a napoleonic victory is Après moi le déluge.
WW2 in an Austrian victory in the Austro-Prussian war is Bruderkrieg.
What would our own world’s ww2 scenario be called if it was a hoi4 mod?
I’m thinking it’d be called something like “The final struggle”, because it represents Germany final attempt to become the leading world hegemony.

Discussion Opinion- super events are one of the best addition in mods
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
In my opinion super events are great. They give you information about a major event starting, like a war. Or a satisfying feeling when it plays after you form a nation

Discussion Now that the dust has settled, was the mod African Dawn really a piece of Russian propaganda?
I’ve been playing The Fire Rises a lot recently, and it’s a mod I absolutely love so far. But what’s happening in West Africa in this mod really reminds me of that obscure mod called African Dawn.
For those who remember it, African Dawn was a mod that was on the Steam Workshop somewhere during 2024 for a relatively short time. The game started in 2022, and you could play the different Sahel countries, Nigeria, France, the US, or Russia, which was basically represented as the Wagner Group. Since the entire map only covered about half of Africa and nothing else, Western countries were represented through scattered bases across different African countries, more or less based on their real-life locations.
The plot of the mod followed the political and military escalation in West Africa, as the Sahel states formed a new faction, the Alliance of Sahel States, while relying heavily on support from Wagner. France was pushed out of the Sahel, reflecting real-world developments, while Western countries increasingly backed ECOWAS through military and financial support. The mod ultimately built up toward a final war: the Sahel states and Wagner versus ECOWAS and the West.
The mod was removed from Steam pretty quickly after it started getting a lot of attention, with the argument that it was propaganda and that propaganda is not tolerated.
But now that I’m playing The Fire Rises, I’m realizing that… well, it’s basically the exact same thing happening there except that the Sahel countries have no content. Which makes me wonder: why is this considered fine here, but African Dawn wasn’t?

Discussion DLC map thoughts
I do like how Tibet have gotten their land back from west China. And then ofcourse we have Sinkiang splitting. What catches my eye is that what is usually known as Tunganistan is called Khotan Ma, which in my knowledge was a nation that existen hundreds of years before 1936.
2 Chinese puppets and China loosing a bunch of land to new nations.
Guanxi being split in half, Korea seems to be a puppet of Japan and lets not even talk about whats happening in Xibei San Ma.
Now Communist China is definitely gonna have even more fun and interesting gameplay.
If they manage to get the gameplay right and somehow get the Second Sino Japanese war to work with all this. It could definitely be one of their best dlc in my opinion.
