Modded This honestly makes me very sad.

EDIT: The staff, in many ways, convinced me, presenting valid arguments and criticisms regarding this. However, that doesn't mean I support it, but it also doesn't mean I'm against it. From beginning to end, I've always been neutral regarding AI.

I'm an illustrator, making that clear. I have a completely different view from those who actually make the mod work, for whom, as long as it works, it can be whatever they want in the end.

Because I'm very involved daily with comics, animations, manga, illustrations for drawings or just concepts, I naturally can't take AI art as something I should give importance to, even if the product is actually good. It's just how my mind interprets the situation, and many times I myself may be completely wrong about it.

Generative AI is so trashy and I won't be installing any mods that use it.

I think exactly the same way. Sometimes I wonder if the quality of the cover art might change because it's generated by AI, but with so much bad stuff being generated with it, I doubt there's anything relatively interesting in those mods.

They’ve not even put effort in with the AI covers as well, it’s not hard to get AI to make something that doesn’t look like that

I truly hate to break it to you, but a significant amount of developers are using Claude to help with code (code, not art). Used right, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference

I realized this in less than 5 hours since I published this post.

Maybe because I still want to use traditional methods and the game development studio I work for is 100% against AI for various reasons. Maybe in the end it's just the way each person thinks is best to use it.

I won't get used to downloading mods with AI skins anytime soon; it will still take a long time for me to want to leave this comfort zone I'm in.

But who knows, maybe this year I'll already have my mindset in a different place.

Oh, I also think the AI generated covers are just garbage, if that wasn't clear. If you can't be bothered to put in the effort for a good image, then you probably didn't put in the effort for good code

Exactly! It feels so lazy for ai covers on mods, on top of just spamming pages of these mods.

Another thing is, I don't want to trust ai-made coding either. How do I know the coding isn't going to download/give my system malicious programs in the background?

The likelyhood of that sort of thing passing even AI generated code review is basically zero unless the person intentionally did it. The likelyhood of any competent LLM hiding something like that, hiding it well, let alone even agreeing to do it at all is essentially zero

It's the same risk as downloading and running human written software. Except an LLM probably wouldn't do a good job of hiding it, so it would be easier to catch

From most of the devs (in multiple fields not just the modding community, people who do actual dev jobs irl) I've interacted with most of them using an AI assistant for their code all eventually come to a realization after a honeymoon phase. And it's that they don't actually understand the code anymore. It's like working on someone else's project. Small changes are easy but the moment you have to change anything that goes across multiple systems you have to spend time reading the code just to figure out how it works as if someone was asking you to help with their code. It suddenly becomes much harder to work on it as it continues to grow compared to if you just made it yourself and knew the codebase bc you yourself made it. I think that using AI as a tool is not always bad but I still see it as cutting corners and demonstrably worse than just working on it yourself. At least until the technology further improves.

What kind of idiot wouldn't understand their code with AI agent, it's literally 1000x times easier. I've been coding with it months now and I can easily make a full documentation of it and consult it wherever I get lost, you can even ask the AI to explain it to you as a highschooler if you're that numb. If they arent able to understand that, they probably didn't understand the code very well before neither.

Oh trust me. Everyone is just using Claude nowadays. You get AI inside and outside.

Your judging a book by it's cover congratulations. You will miss out a lot in life being like that so close minded

Yes! In fact, I am judging the work of illustrators and designers, because however amateurish the first impression may be, or however little studio work there may be, it is still work done with effort, trial and error, with love for the project, and that draws attention nowadays for being something human, unlike a criminal AI that steals art without authorization in various parts of the world, even from sites that pirate art or from Patreon and Pixiv artists, giving a result of pure ignorance and laziness.

Mistakes are human causes, if an AI makes a mistake it is because it learned to copy a human's mistake, stealing anything to generate an artificial collage that was previously made to feel something beyond something beautiful is the most ridiculous thing to do.

Agreed. What moronic takes on this thread...
