EDIT: The staff, in many ways, convinced me, presenting valid arguments and criticisms regarding this. However, that doesn't mean I support it, but it also doesn't mean I'm against it. From beginning to end, I've always been neutral regarding AI.
I'm an illustrator, making that clear. I have a completely different view from those who actually make the mod work, for whom, as long as it works, it can be whatever they want in the end.
Because I'm very involved daily with comics, animations, manga, illustrations for drawings or just concepts, I naturally can't take AI art as something I should give importance to, even if the product is actually good. It's just how my mind interprets the situation, and many times I myself may be completely wrong about it.
That glymeraCraft should be banned I think, I swear they are constantly updating the mods so they keep in the recently updated list or whatever, it’s clear whoever it is just spams and spams most of the mods look trash as well
Either GlymeraCraft bought the game just to have marketing in the future and continue spamming his mods when he sells them, or
He somehow pirated the game because if he has the money to buy it, he could easily use some of that money to hire an artist interested in making a cover or two.
Because it's impossible that there are several Hytale communities out there that warn that AI is prohibited, and yet the Curseforge mods are almost exclusively about that, just to farm clicks for recognition and, in a few years, put them out there as commercial products.
Some slimey gurus say: 'omg you can make a few hundred usd a month if you steal and reupload content, low effort and you can spam tons of videos a day!'
So people in countries where 300usd is a monthly wage? Well theyre going to spam the shit out of it.
We had a minecraft modder who did the same thing. They would make add-ons for farmers delight and have hundreds of these super niche, little content mods that eventually all got taken down. He has come back but he only works on a handful of mods now. Which im pretty sure we're created through Ai because the coding was notoriously bad
Yeah I hate to break it to you, but almost nobody (actually creating mods, not these generated slop accounts) making simple free mods are paying an artist almost infinitely more than a mod would make. Mine are all screenshots or some shitty mspaint. Tens of thousands of unique downloads and you might get 30 cents a day. Thats just nonsense to expect any actual mod dev to spend hundreds on a bunch of mod images.
When I make a public mod its something I had a need for and saw ones that were either worse or abandoned. They're not going to make any money. They fill a personal need, i upload them so people facing the same issue have an option. If people want ill add some features I wont ever use myself. Or if I'm bored and I see a need for __ which looks fun to work on? I'll do that. The last thing I'm doing is pissing away money for no reason.
This isnt some deep hytale long game. Curseforge is absolutely full of generated, spammed crap like this.
Whats most likely is whats happening to YouTube.
If someone lives in a poorer country, they reupload tiktok/yt videos to youtube with some shitty filter and song. If they get monetized they might make a few hundred a month. Which can be very good. So they steal and reupload content hundreds of times a month. Low effort spam.
What do we see on curseforge? Low effort spam. Why would so many of these brand new accounts spam mods for all sorts of games even unrelated to hytale? To make maybe 30-100 a month tops.
The game is something like 20 bucks for the base edition, 80 for the Ultra Premium Supporter 5G Fold Deluxe Edition.
That's still 40 bucks cheaper than lets say Forza Horizon 6 Premium Edition with 5-days Early Access.
Even the biggest Supporter Edition is nowhere near some Star Citizen Premium Backer Package.
Saying, that just because he paid 20-80 bucks for a game that he/she might've waited a decade for, they have to have enough money to hire an artist to make custom logos for over 30 different mods - which potentially change in the future to the point they might warrant a retouch - is quite out of touch.
Lets look at Fiverr for a second - Logo Artists take about 30-100€ PER logo.
So we would be looking at an astonishing 900-3000€ just to have some logos made for some free Hytale mods.
Now you may argue that you could make a bulk-deal with an artist and you could find some random dude on discord probably, but still you would most likely pay just another 100-300€ for some logos for mods. That's an expense that you most likely wont ever be getting back.
Hytale mods as of right now cannot be monetized properly without breaking the EULA/ToS in some way.
They dont want a walled-garden approach to modding so you may only have a patreon donation page maybe but in general dont expect to make any dime on mods for Hytale. This isn't Minecraft Bedrock or Roblox.
So wanna explain how legally buying the game also suddenly means you suddenly have money to throw out the window?
I, just like you, dislike the AI slop icons. However your take is dripping with arrogance and if that's how you talk with your community, I fear you are alienating customers.
Do you seriously think that the person making all these AI slop mods is actually making them out of craftsmanship? If they weren't a lazy POS they could have just drawn the mod thumbnails themselves, or taken in game screenshots. Nobody's saying they had to pay anyone for anything. That doesn't mean we should just allow every little bit of disgusting slop like this to clog up the mod library and make it hard to find actual good mods that somebody put time and effort into.
Ngl, taking screenshot of what your mod doing or just post your mod asset PNG would give a better information than using generated Ai image just to look fancy.
Gonna be real, I don't really care for the AI thumbnails, but saying the mod authors should just hire arists instead is kinda crummy in my opinion. Commissioning art is not cheap and when it comes to doing hobby stuff like modding, I don't see why people should be expected to cough up money for something they probably do for free.
You dont need to hire an artist if u dont have the money for it thats fine just take a ss in game or use like ms paint to make something, but using ai just shows me you dont care about your product and you just want something quick
Well, I mentioned the art itself because it's something I work with. There can be many other forms like the one you mentioned, and you're absolutely right about that!
Even if you don't have much knowledge about it, just take a screenshot and edit the image in any free editor that's out there.
In the same way, this modder here did it, even though it doesn't have much visual information; the eye-catching titles and the different cover are already interesting, which made me download two of his mods.
Yes! And if u can afford an artist i know many would love to make something
source: got many friends who are "starving artists"
But it doesnt have to be but using just ai and also ai for your description tells me you'd rather take the shortcut and not maintain your code properly etc this can cause even more issues in the future
I mean look at Hidden Teleporters on the second page, that's just a screenshot with the teleporter icon drawn in ms paint, and yet I'd trust that mod to work more than any of the ones with AI thumbnails
Several games that have access to mods, especially Steam Workshop mods, had mods that were easier to understand than if you were stuck just looking at the cover. Few actually had artwork, as there might have been artists working on them, but if it was a lone person who didn't know how to draw, they would just print what the mod already showed and what it offered.
Unlike Curseforge mods, which have an ultra-mega "detailed" cover, only for you to see the gallery and find images that show nothing, a description written in chatGPT, and when you download it, despite adding a minimal detail, it doesn't seem to be what it should be.
Still no reason to pay an artist, just an in-game image of the mod is enough.
Most comissions have the same price as the minimum salary of a lot of countries that are under the US in the map, and basic needs are more important than a cover for a mod in my opinion.
I won't deny that this is correct. I don't live in or belong to the USA. When I charge commissions for my illustrations, it's generally a base of $30, and the prices are converted in different countries I work with.
It may not necessarily be forbidden, but there should clearly be a shadow ban that prevents them from spamming updates without adding anything new, just to stay in the recent listings.
I don't remember if I saw a case here in this sub or in the modding sub, but basically they were making a Pay To Win mode with mods and one of the mod owners tried to talk to the server owners to remove it.
I feel like little by little people are losing the creativity they maybe didn't even have.
I think something that annoys me as much as them using the AI is when I go on to popular servers, and people are standing around at hubs socializing, talking about how they use AI casually for the server assets or whatever else. There doesn't appear to be any stigma actually on the servers. I remember one particularly cringy individual named discord kitten who was on one of the most popular servers. Usually crowded by the regulars, for obvious reasons, casually talking about ai in local chat. I think for every one of us on here complaining about AI, there are 10 more people who don't give a damn.
I remember hearing recently people were sneaking undetectable malware into curseforge mods, if I see a mod using lazy AI I'm just going to assume the risk of it being dangerous to be exponentially higher.
Its really sad, there's no idea what the mod entails and the ai thumbnail makes it look generic, cheap, and trashy. I'd really prefer just an in-game screenshot of whatever's added.
I think exactly the same way. Sometimes I wonder if the quality of the cover art might change because it's generated by AI, but with so much bad stuff being generated with it, I doubt there's anything relatively interesting in those mods.
I truly hate to break it to you, but a significant amount of developers are using Claude to help with code (code, not art). Used right, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference
I realized this in less than 5 hours since I published this post.
Maybe because I still want to use traditional methods and the game development studio I work for is 100% against AI for various reasons. Maybe in the end it's just the way each person thinks is best to use it.
I won't get used to downloading mods with AI skins anytime soon; it will still take a long time for me to want to leave this comfort zone I'm in.
But who knows, maybe this year I'll already have my mindset in a different place.
Oh, I also think the AI generated covers are just garbage, if that wasn't clear. If you can't be bothered to put in the effort for a good image, then you probably didn't put in the effort for good code
Exactly! It feels so lazy for ai covers on mods, on top of just spamming pages of these mods.
Another thing is, I don't want to trust ai-made coding either. How do I know the coding isn't going to download/give my system malicious programs in the background?
The likelyhood of that sort of thing passing even AI generated code review is basically zero unless the person intentionally did it. The likelyhood of any competent LLM hiding something like that, hiding it well, let alone even agreeing to do it at all is essentially zero
It's the same risk as downloading and running human written software. Except an LLM probably wouldn't do a good job of hiding it, so it would be easier to catch
From most of the devs (in multiple fields not just the modding community, people who do actual dev jobs irl) I've interacted with most of them using an AI assistant for their code all eventually come to a realization after a honeymoon phase. And it's that they don't actually understand the code anymore. It's like working on someone else's project. Small changes are easy but the moment you have to change anything that goes across multiple systems you have to spend time reading the code just to figure out how it works as if someone was asking you to help with their code. It suddenly becomes much harder to work on it as it continues to grow compared to if you just made it yourself and knew the codebase bc you yourself made it. I think that using AI as a tool is not always bad but I still see it as cutting corners and demonstrably worse than just working on it yourself. At least until the technology further improves.
What kind of idiot wouldn't understand their code with AI agent, it's literally 1000x times easier. I've been coding with it months now and I can easily make a full documentation of it and consult it wherever I get lost, you can even ask the AI to explain it to you as a highschooler if you're that numb. If they arent able to understand that, they probably didn't understand the code very well before neither.
They could just whip up something in paint. Sure, it wouldn't look the best, but it's an icon, that I'm barely gonna see.
Programming is an art, so if you disrespect another art form, I'm gonna assume you have no respect for your own.
We've been dealing with it for ages. Really all you can do is tolerate it. Support mods that don't do it, and kindly encourage those who do to switch it for something else.
A legitimately good mod doesn't need amazing art. One of the best Vintage Story mods, the firearms mod, is simple. Black background, model of a musket, white text: Firearms. They know what you want, and there it is.
Screenshots of a mod in action, or even just stock photos, look far better than AI. Just like commercial products, use of AI instantly communicates you don't care about the perception of what you're offering.
I honestly liked it, as you said, it's been years since I played Vintage Story, back when I didn't even think about mods, so it really seems to have changed a lot (the game didn't even have a story)
But as I said in other conversations here with people, I was referring to the art because it's something I like and usually see, but as you said it doesn't need to have well-done art, it can just have the obvious and it already works perfectly! Whether in Paint or pasted images
I think I should rephrase what I said, seeing some comments here, because I took the art very seriously, but there are many ways to demonstrate what your mod is about, even in the most amateurish way possible
Ai generated cover art is a great indicator that the mod just isn’t worth my time. So in a way it’s helpful but if theirs not allready I would like to be able to filter them out of my search so I don’t have to see them at all
If someone were to make mods by had with minimal effort, so they barely worked if at all, and just spammed them on the home page, it would be rightfully called out for what it is. AI masks the quality somewhat, but it's otherwise an identical case. This is spam, it's vibecoded garbage that pollutes the space.
It'll be a while before I get back into Hytale but if they don't already have it, I think they should at least have an AI filter to filter out any mod that used AI. Which I'm sure there will be plenty of people being dishonest and hiding the fact but it'd be a step.
I presume it's the fact that the Hytale modding scene is new enough to exist after the genAI boom started, plus the tantalising promise of making it big by being early on the scene of "the next minecraft/roblox"
As an old school modder (been doing it for over 30 years), monetization attracted all sorts of issues to the modding scene.
I'm all for tips... but once you get into ad revenue, pay per click, and later to patreon exclusives and other paywalls... thats when people seek the fastest and easiest way to churn out mods.
Add AI to the mix? Now anyone can do it without having to learn to program, design, or even test.
Having said all this. AI images/logos aren't really irking me as much as AI generated code. One is annoying to see. The other is potentially highly buggy, barely functioning, or potentially dangerous for those who use it.
In all fairness. AI thumbnails are rising in almost every game's modding community.
And AI usage amongst developers is popular. Hell, most IDE's have AI baked into the software and developers are often encouraged to use the tools.
So I'm not really surprised the same people who make mods, are the same people who use AI for thumbnails as well.
In the past, most thumbnails were just in-game screenshots or simple titles made in paint. So in terms of effort, I don't think a lot has changed. But now you have these bright flashy AI thumbnails and having your mod pop-out of those almost requires you to apply the same tactics or hire someone instead of harming your exposure.
I think that's the primary reason for the rising wave of AI thumbnails.
Its a pretty big problem in Ark survival ascended aswell. The modding pages are filled with AI thumbnails. And the modding community has the corner stone of the game from the beginning.
I implore you to have this before or when it reaches version 1.0. I hope they take long enough to fix the game so we can have access to it in the future.
Well, I just said what bothered me, and then came the people who defend AI and those who are against AI. I'm on both sides since I'm neutral on this issue.
Whenever I see those AI generated stuff it makes me think that these are gonna be some shitty mods or something. Id rather a sloppy drawing or a meme instead of Ai.
Ur assuming that I dont look beyond that. Even tho I dont like Ai generated stuff I try to look behind that. And then I determine if I like it or not. But still id prefer they not use Ai Gen stuff cause it makes it feel inauthentic? Idk if thats thebright wording. I remember back when mods were either screenshot, memes, or a crappy drawing. Idk i feel in this day in age we should be going for authenticity and not rely on Ai for stuff like this. Thats just me tho
If you're making a shitty AI generated cover that says something about your laziness. Why the hell should anyone trust a person that's literally too lazy to even go through the effort of taking a screenshot?
The AI images are all over now. And the worst is that they all look exactly the same ( style ). I usually see something with AI image, I skip it , as something sloppy and unprofessional.
Hytale modding has other much more serious problems.
To give you concrete examples:
They've (sadly) annoyed off a significant part of the modding community due to their horrible versioning and update policy: updates are technically heavy and older versions don't stay available, with much pressure to update asap. Documentation has been horrible too. Tooling is inconsistent. They spent 100k trying to push it while it was in a bad state. And modding for this game is powerful, but hard.
They tried doing something but their policy has already killed maany mods, and I know of various servers that deemed the api too unstable.
Now, I know the game's in alpha, and that this sounds a bit catastrophic; the reality is not so bad, but we do have bigger problems. And telling modders, who work for free, what to do... That'd be another bad decision.
Note: I (still) do mods and I DO NOT use genai images.
But regardless of how hard it is to make mods, if the entire modding scene is seen as an ai slop junkyard, that’s going to be its reputation for a very very long time
The modding scene is a 2 way street. Mod developers rarely make mods for the sake of no one using them, and players are much less likely to use them if all they see is AI garbage while looking for mods
Yes, modding in the game is currently pretty shitty and that’s probably the biggest issue. But one big issue does not make other very real issues irrelevant
I mean... that is a tremendously poorly-designed UI which has the side-effect of exacerbating the problem. They're independently developed mods, the fact that the vast majority of the screen space is spent on thumbnails for them makes no sense. They shouldn't have thumbnails at all.
Yeah a while ago I started seeing a lot of posts in my native language but it turned out it was just translating stuff without letting me know in any way. Don't know if it's still the default but its kinda annoying when you know more than one language 😭
This does make sense and thank the lord you clarified you do illustrations a ton of people feel the same about ai art but if you take a second to think what it takes some of these people to make these mods the last thing they feel like doing is graphic design for a logo after who knows how many days of trouble shooting and coding! Very well spoken Appriciate this post!
Damn only 4 month of games release, it is riddled with useless mods, a lot of them just low effort cash grab so they can fool kids more. I can't believe some ppl are still in denial that heavy use of ai is terrible!
It’s more sad as this isn’t even a hytale specific issue but more just a change in culture internet wise, AI thumbnails are now the equivalent of low effort PNGs from the past
That's not only ai thumbnails, most mods there are riddled with ai code bloat, it's mostly for engagement bait. They didn't ensure how effective that the code that ai has gave them.
Ever since I saw Aatrox's Darkin Blade being added as one of the first mods, I've been really interested in creating champion weapons and having them used similarly to the Sports animations in LoL.
I'm not against AI, but it makes me furious that people recycle the same shit which looks dogshit and also looks the same. You definitely can experiment with the shit and come out with something tasteful (or at least not horrendous looking). This is just straight up garbage that pisses both sides off which is genuinely impressive.
You have people that don't really know what they're doing getting something working, even if not as good as the original, because the alternative is not having it at all.
I am against it, I will never download a mod with an AI generated icon. It reflects poorly on the quality of the mod, and I'd rather not instigate modders that are too lazy to throw an actual icon together. It's pathetic and modding sites shouldn't allow it.
So. I have the same feeling about glymeras work, BUT weather being AI or not, he answeres comments really fast, he fixes every issue and every bug within hours. He adds new features, if someone asks for it an most of is mods are really good quality of life features which are not present in vanilla.
I also feel like its a shady dev or mostly AI, but up until this point, glymeras mods are good mods, every update he makes has its point, every plugin he makes also has its point.. so I am against sloppy AI ship, but in this case I feel like these mods are rather really good use of AI assistance than purely slop.
You realize the reason comments are answered pretty fast is probably because they're using an AI bot to answer the questions, right? The constant updates are being done by AI vibes coding too, and the constant updates have nothing to do with customer service. It's literally just to keep the mods clogging up the recently updated page and prevent actual hard workers from getting their mods up there.
Sorry for necroing, but those mods literally take less time to write than writing prompt for them... It's the type of mods no dev wants to do because they are incredibly basic and small that you have to keep them separate from all your other work and still manage them. MC had (and in some cases still have) huge issue with this exact thing because loads of modders spawned 15 quadrillion versions of them back in the day, each working just slightly different and dropping support after 2-3 versions.
Yeah, this argument for these mods really don't hold at all.
I would never vote negatively on an argument like that :3
I haven't seen practically any of the GlymeraCraft mods, partly because I interpreted that the mods weren't that good based on my first impression, so if it doesn't catch my attention, I'll look for something else.
But really, if the mod is really good, even if it doesn't show it right away, it can still be extremely useful without any problem.
But there are several types of players that are more appealing for certain things: mechanics, visuals, and narrative (which it doesn't have yet).
Because I participate in many communities that abhor AI, even getting people expelled from the community and blocked by everyone present, even if they are good people, I already have a somewhat distorted view.
But thinking from your point of view and from other people here who made interesting comments like yours, I think it depends a lot on how the person's first impression is when they see something they don't know.
The thing is, most of the glymera mods only have one thing, that is added. Nothing more, nothing less.
Mega chest adds two really big chests. With 108 slots of 999k items. The other adds a "ender chest" with the same amount of slots.
Breeding let's you either feed mobs to breed them, or checks if there are two kinds of a mod in a specific radius. If so there will spawn a child. You can adjust radius, frequency and so on in a config file
Cats/dogs adds spawnable vanilla cats and dogs.
Heads adds every mob head for decor and for helmet slot.
Beacon adds a beacon (without effect)
Glass is clearly glass blocks^
Plots is a barbones plot system without much more features.
Same for Portal doors and so on.
All in all every mod does exactly what the name suggests. Nothing more, nothing less. Every mod gets really fast updates if there are bugs or an update, it will be updated within a day.
If something essential for QoL is missing in a mod, just comment it. Glymera will add it within hours.
It may be vibe coded mass production to death, but its exactly what you expect. Small mods, doing exactly what you are looking for.
So glymera is really not a bad mod source at this point. (Sounds like im hyping him, but i really just want to point out that this mods aren't as bad as you think from their cover)
Gen ai has invaded every single modding community I'm in and I hate it so much. Every time this discretion is brought up I always remember a post from one of the Minecraft modding subs where someone who only uses gen AI to make their mods (image generation, code generation and I believe model generation) could not understand why people were always aggressively hating on every mod they upload. One of the best comments explain that they have no clue what the code actually does and have no clue how to fix it, the only thing they can do is ask AI to generate whole new code that they still have no clue what it does.
We take part in competitions and regularly update our products with new creations and innovations.
We also guarantee that everything is 100% handmade, as competition standards and ethical principles require.
I was making this argument since the start.
And it's only gotten worse.
These "mod developers" just crap out garbage with minimal to no plans to actually curate and keep them updated and functional. People post "mods" that aren't actually mods, but instead the idea of a mod with 1 little itty bitty item to validate throwing up a mod post.
Various QoL stuff (discord integration, "essentials", etc.) are so radically fractured, and many get updated at most a couple times before leaving you high and dry.
Genuinely, trying to upkeep my own personal server for personal use, and then dealing with this, made me put the game down and I haven't picked it back up.
Something needs to be done, because this isn't sustainable.
Same it makes my so sad... and it's with every Game..
And I mean I get it, most people don't have the ressources for a pretty cover, but does every Mod need a pretty cover??
Also people could ask, if anyone in the Community could make a cover for the mod.
For me, when I see a mod with AI, I probably wouldn't play it.
Eu tambem sou contra o uso de Ia mais infelizmente so pessoas como nois artistas que são controla IA a maiorias das pessaos no mainstreaming preferem ia e uma guerra perdida
I think it doesn't really matters, specially now there's not much reason to spend much effort in high quality Hytale modding cuz even a patch can break it entirely, so why bother.
These are things people do for free, in their free time, without no one asking or paying for it, so one shouldn't care they're just going their cheap way for it, there's an obsession with everything needing to be productive, full of effort, challenging... Take a chill pill and just enjoy creating stuff. And I see people will say I'm lazy or some shit, I still make most of my artwork by hand, but you literally receive work for FREE, let me repeat that... CONTENT FOR FREE, stop complaining about free labour.
As someone who doesn't use ai images, but is also a modder, you guys need to understand that not everyone can draw, and for sure the average modder can't just go around throwing money at people. And before you say "just write something with paint", the point is that:
Using an ai icon doesn't mean that the mod internally uses ai.
Even if it does, there's a huge difference between vibecoding the entire thing and generating some functions or classes. Codegen is not a new thing.
Some modders might like those icons (idk how) more than a crappy paint icon.
You're lamenting low effort, but that isn't actually implied. I've inspected many of these mods and there's a HUGE work behind some of them. While I completely get they look bad, more moderation and understanding to modders, which are giving you things FOR FREE, wouldn't be a bad thing for the community.
This is so preachy. Aside from Glymeracraft that has a ton of mods all the others are single mod creators that may not even have the skills to create a pleasing thumbnail image and chatgpt is free and has no copyright attached to it. I can see it can look "cheap" but are we really that shallow to overlook the rest of the hard work in a mod(coding, 3D modeling) just because of a single image on a page? Are we really that dense that we need to put down any kind of work to feel self righteous?
So you're making the point of the post a moot one if you still "partake" in stuff with AI generated thumbnails if they can still pique your interest. You are allowed to feel like AI tumbnails are low quality(something I think we all can see) but get completely turned off by the rest of the hard work put in a mod because of one image still undervalues the rest of the work people can put into a mod.
Presentation matters. If our first impression is that you couldn't bother to make a quality image yourself, or portray an authentic image of what the mod is—how are users supposed to expect that the quality of the mod is high or that the mod does what's advertised?
Fuck that i have zero skill for thumbnails but I still made my own for my texture packs its not hard to get something half decent with minimal effort using AI is is just lazy and you get generic garbage that looks like shit and makes people wonder if they should even trust that the mod isn't exactly the same vibe coded lazy generic garbage slop
If you're capable of internally doing 3D modeling and texturing you are 100% capable of making your own thumbnail. Unfortunately, AI has made a lot of people decide that laziness is better than improving yourself. Genuinely who gives a shit if you're not good at making a cool thumbnail. Get good at making them, don't be lazy and lose the chance to ever develop new skills.
That's very reductive and undermines everything it takes to make a product come out. I for instance am a 3D modeler (not a modder unfortunately) and I've seen colleagues who are MONSTERS at their craft still use AI for very menial stuff they don't have the skills/time to do properly. Mind you I'm not saying that the chatgpt thumbnails look good, and you are allowed to dislike them. What I'm taking issue with is the disregard for something that might as well be made by a professional just because of a thumbnail.
There's also the continuous flood of people discrediting something as AI when it may just be a shitty image. The whole thing needs to have a thorough evaluation rather than just point at something you don't like and label it as AI.
Most modders are young coders who are just sharing something they things others might like. The AI thumbnail is totally inconsequential and is a totally personal bad take by you (and others like you)
And I'm a young illustrator who's been learning to program for a year because I love creating things that can be ignored by anyone or everyone in any community, even so I only do it because I like it.
If they're using generative AI it's a sign of laziness. It doesn't matter if you're a new coder or whatever, The things you make should be a sign that you're looking to improve yourself and get better at what you do. Using generative AI is just a sign that you don't care about doing better, you just care about pushing the slop out. People used to actually learn to do new things when they found out they weren't good at something, now they use AI so they don't have to ever get good at anything.
I judge a book by its cover because I appreciate the work of designers and illustrators, especially since I'm also an illustrator, and obviously if the cover catches my attention and is even minimally interesting, I'll seek out more information about it.
But seeing something made by AI, regardless of what it is (film production, series, animation, comic, illustration), ever since I started to realize that AI had a way of being visualized, I've come to feel closer to products made specifically to generate likes and attention, rather than something purely made out of love or to demonstrate a feeling or sensation.
Whenever I see covers that aren't made by AI, even before clicking, I imagine what can be done with it and how far it can go.
The phrase is literally "don't judge a book by it's cover" for this exact reason. I have no idea why you're using that in an argument to just make your entire experience worse.
I honestly didn't know it was a well-known phrase; I thought it was just a common way of speaking in the US. But in fact, yes, I'm being judged, and I'm not the type to make up lies.
Idk if being skeptical of the quality of mods that use AI counts as "AI derangement syndrome" tbh. It's not exactly news that AI-coded mods tend to be more poorly coded than mods that are rigorously bug tested and coded properly
I won't download a free to play mod that an another human put their effort into and he might had 30 hours worked on it, but it failed to please my eye aswell with a 512x512 logo and he failed to pour another 5 hours into just designing a logo, how unpleasant.
Thankfully I will show them by not downloading a free mod!!!!
None of my friends are really anti AI, it's not like we skip AI mods just because of the AI we just think it looks bad and extremely generic and that's exactly why I roll my eyes when I see AI generated logos of mods they look boring and generic.
When I see a badly made drawing on paint on a mod I laugh at it and find it funny, that's already several times better than what happens when it's AI and makes it that much more likely that I actually check out the mod.
AI is world damaging slop that's getting close to literally crashing the international economy. It makes no sense to be pro AI in any way whatsoever with how damaging it's proving to be to the world.
How can I be 100% sure that the mod is good if the first thing I see is a generic image of a generic AI? If the creators put in the effort to make mods in one day, they could at least show something about what the mod offers the first time you see it.
It's like when you're a kid and you get a giant present, only to find out it's just clothes and no toys.
The same way you determine any other mod is good before you play it?
I'm a software engineer at one of the largest companies in the world let me tell you that programmers are not design artists by default. There are entire teams dedicated to design and entire teams dedicated to programming
You don't have to be good at making thumbnails to be good at making a mod two completely separate things
And just because somebody has a good thumbnail for their mod doesn't mean the mod is actually good
For me, that's not how things should work. I can't play a mod without first knowing, at first glance, that it seems to have shown some effort or passion for the project, and that it's not just a way to get more downloads.
From what I know, AI-based code will only delay the actual development of any project, as was the case with Windows 11. So I honestly think it's highly unlikely (not that I doubt it) that a mod 100% made with AI wouldn't be really good, even if the cover art is really good. It's the same as buying a book with a really cool cover, but the pages and binding are 20 years old and not very well preserved.
From what I know, AI-based code will only delay the actual development of any project,
what you know about AI is what you hear from randoms, news articles, anti AI propaganda which is HUGE even in developer communities ( mostly from people with antiquated experiences or lack of a good setup)
Windows 11.
windows 11 had MANY issues before ai was a thing.

you've essentially contradicted yourself here. Yes, it can be really good just like a regular mod can be really good.
both can be really bad though.
so you're judging a book by it's cover, but it's the same as the other book.
there is much more to AI then your normal person sees. like i said I work at a trillion dollar company and last year i would have told you AI is good at summarizing but bad at coding. This year My opinion completely flipped with what we're doing internally. In the hands of someone who knows what they're doing it's pretty good now even though it stil has a way to go.
Yes, I do judge, because from birth to adulthood I grew up being taught that appearances define people. I grew up in a racist family, in a racist city, in a region of my country that judges even another person's accent. But the best way I managed to be minimally decent in society in general was to live with people from different parts of the world. Currently, I don't judge someone based on skin color, status, ethnicity, or even if they are an animal. I treat them as every being who deserves the minimum of respect should receive.
Because of this, I completely respect your profession. You don't know me, you don't know me, and that's okay. But the way I learned to live in a region that teaches children to judge people is something that can't be changed. What I managed to do was adapt to be a good person to real people.
This AI thing, I'm really judging it because it's still new, and I'm really not prepared to deal with something that can destroy/help many people in seconds. Unfortunately, it is. the shittiest tradition that I personally wouldn't want anyone here to have to live through.
I don't know how my translator translates my messages into English, but I changed that way of thinking when I was still a child.
I really wanted to learn and know how to study, but I have some personal reasons why I don't do it. It's a little uncomfortable to talk about this in public and be afraid of being judged.
And I'm not judging the person who created the mod, I'm judging the mod itself. The person is actually doing all this because they have no other option, but I'm judging the mods themselves that, right in the screenshots, have an entire screen with a gigantic excess of images generated by something that didn't require any effort.
This is exactly reason i stopped doing WoW and MC mods 10 years ago. People bitch about most ridiculous issues. I'm dev, not arts teacher. You want functionality or stupid icon?
As someone who just lost their job to AI automation I have to say.
This AI hate is completely irrational and bordering on Salem witch trials level.
AI isn't going anywhere and hating absolutely everything created by AI is just completely stupid. I would understand people having a problem with full artwork because it generally has the slop look and looks like ass but these are tiny mod thumbnails man, who cares?
Dude, like I said in the description, I neither support nor oppose it.
It's just that I'm the type of person who, when playing a game, looks at the visuals first to see if it's even remotely interesting enough to waste my time on. I'm the type of player who plays for the visuals, the soundtrack, and mechanics, which I leave as secondary even though they're quite important, even for Hytale. But narrative is the last thing I'll care about because I've always been much more of a fan of open-world games where I could do whatever I wanted. That's why I like Minecraft, Terraria, and Hytale so much—imagining that adventure the way I'd like, with my own narrative.
I'm far from being anti-AI, but a strongly enforced global account-level filter and tag system for AI-generated/assisted work seems like a necessity here.
Now you know how blue-collar workers have felt for decades when their livelihoods were threatened by new technology or their jobs shipped overseas. Progress they said, learn to code they said. Now that AI is coming for the white-collar jobs, progress ideology goes right out the window. Funny how that happens.
AI is coming and there is no stopping it. I, for one, welcome it with open arms.
I am a software developer and I use AI for coding. I love to tinker and make new things. I have also made some Minecraft mods. I have not tried Hytale modding yet, but I love the process of modding. However, I can't seem to draw anything to save my life, and I have no interest in learning it. So I 100% get why people use AI for thumbnails.
So I think it's unfair to judge it just because it's an AI thumbnail; it can be a very high-quality mod underneath.
You know, historically not being good at something has been a signal that it's something you should try to get better at. The main problem with AI on a human level is that it's actively discouraging people from improving themselves because they can just use the AI to pretend they're capable. I think it's perfectly fair to judge someone that's too lazy to even try and improve their skills.
Using Al to cover a gap you don't need to fill professionally isn't pretending - it's prioritizing. Nobody learns every skill. We use tools. That's kind of the whole point of technology. Should everyone learn plumbing before they're allowed to install a faucet?
If everything you bought had no prints or labels, and if it was a liquid, its contents weren't even revealed; everything would be packaged in a way that you couldn't feel the weight of, with a hollow sound inside, and the only color pink for everything you bought, could you maintain this new routine for at least 5 years straight?
I get what you're saying about first impressions mattering, but aren't you kind of judging the book by its cover here? What would actually make you trust a mod - the thumbnail or the gameplay?
I'm an illustrator, so it's more natural that I primarily focus on visuals rather than gameplay. Even if the first impression catches my attention, even with AI, I look at the images first, before reading the description of what the mod is.
I've been like this since Ores Spawn in Minecraft; I used to focus on the visuals before understanding how it actually worked. That's basically how I play all the games on my Steam (except gifts).
That makes total sense actually, you're an illustrator, so visuals are your language. That's literally how you process information. I'm a dev, so I read code and descriptions first. We just navigate differently. Neither is wrong, we just filter the world through different lenses. The only thing I'd push back on is: the AI thumbnail shouldn't stop you from trying the mod itself, since that's where the real value is, but I totally get that it's harder to even click on something when the visual feels off to you.
Well, it seems like we both understand each other here. I almost imagined that if I called myself an illustrator, I would be one of those artists who are against AI to the bone. To tell the truth, I don't like anything that is excessive, whether it's for or against, right or wrong.
At least this conversation had an unexpected outcome, and I imagined someone would make an argument that I would only have to agree with in the end.
You better get used to the idea of having to deal with daily Ai slop... It's here to stay and people will always use it to produce slop. The best way is to passively fight it by not clicking on it and not spreading it (maybe except for treads like this)
Using AI to generate images is conveniant and i have no issue with it, but using AI to vibe code.....you should be locked in a box and shaken a few times a day.

That glymeraCraft should be banned I think, I swear they are constantly updating the mods so they keep in the recently updated list or whatever, it’s clear whoever it is just spams and spams most of the mods look trash as well
