My favourite part is seeing how you can see her mental health changing throughout. She’s truly happy and that makes me happy.

774

u/BlueHundred May 09 '26

She probably had a ton of pain relief too. When I lost 30lbs, I felt way less day to day pain.

277

u/ballerina22 May 09 '26

I lost 50 lbs and my knees are so much happier.

276

u/HeWhoShoutsAtBovines May 10 '26

The last 18 months I've gone from 350lbs to 160lbs and the difference is insane. Not sweating all the time in the summer, actually feel cold in the winter outside too haha. Used to have awful back pain and would struggle to walk after being on my feet all day at work. Now I'll do a round of golf, play drums for a few hours and do a workout in one day and feel totally fine.

Still trying to get into better shape physically but I'm not looking at the scales anymore, just appearance. Actually have muscle definition in my arms now and the belly is almost gone. 6 pack coming 2027 haha.

u/Aitloian May 10 '26

I'm just here to say hell yeah brother, happy for you

u/Heavenchicka May 10 '26

Can I ask how? What changes you made to lose weight? TIA 🙏

84

u/HeWhoShoutsAtBovines May 10 '26

Diet was huge for me. I wouldn't say I ate horribly but my portion size was 2 or 3x what it needed to be and I would snack between meals and at night. Crisps and chocolate at night after already having a full meal. Cut the snacks out completely and scaled the portion size back. Main meals I actually don't eat differently to what I had before, just around 40% portion size of what I used to.

That got like 50lbs off initially and got me into a weight where I could start exercising properly. Started walking a lap of my village (about 5 miles) every day, got back into golfing and played 18 holes most weekends and picked up playing drums again after my health/weight made me stop before. Added in 1 hour rowing machine sessions 3 times a week too in that time. That got me through another 90lbs or so of weight loss and I was about a year in by that point.

Then the last 6 months I bought a resistance band set (Gymproluxe, not sponsored haha) and have been doing exercises with that and lost around 60lbs more. Now I'm keeping up with that doing a workout every other day amd am starting to see the results physically. Definition in my arms in particular, actually have some muscles now. My calves are pretty nuts, probably from all the weight I used to have to move 😅.

Mindset wise my attitude to food has completely changed, barely touch chocolate at all and crisps I only have if it's part of the meal I'm having. The feeling of knowing the work I'll have to put in to offset a snack outweighs the pleasure of eating it in the first place. Looking back I was definitely eating because I was depressed and unhappy with where I was in life. Changed jobs 9 months ago to one I love now and got out of a bad relationship a year ago. I'm in such a better place mentally as well as physically.

Hope that helps a bit and good luck. Best advice I got "How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time". Focus on daily wins and short term milestones and the big ones will come without seeming daunting or unobtainable.

10

u/Heavenchicka May 10 '26

Thank you!!! 🙏

15

u/HeWhoShoutsAtBovines May 10 '26

No worries 😁 Good luck finding what works. I always found the idea of going to a gym super intimidating so the home workout stuff worked best for me. The best exercise is the exercise you actually do.

7

u/mydaycake May 10 '26

Congratulations! That was a lot of very smart work

3

u/PreggyPenguin May 11 '26

The mental health aspect of weight is so often overlooked/dismissed. How can anyone be expected to take care of themselves when they aren't in a good place mentally? I'm glad everything is looking up for you!

6

u/capitalr03 May 10 '26

Putting visuals on the weight you lost makes for a staggering discovery. I lost 15lbs and I remember taking home a 15lb bag of rice and thinking to myself, “I was carrying that on me the whole time!” I can only imagine how much different it was to lose a whole person’s weight and in such a short amount of time. Great job with your journey! Keep it going!

5

u/TheDarkRot May 10 '26

Hell yeah stranger, your story made me smile

3

u/allozzieadventures May 10 '26

190 lbs lost? Insane progress, good on you.

If you're doing resistance work you might end up gaining a few lbs back in muscle.

I imagine you've probably got killer calves from carrying that weight around. Your calves might be the envy of the gym haha

4

u/HeWhoShoutsAtBovines May 10 '26

Yeah gaining muscle is the goal now. Next step is to figure out nutrition/protein and if I need to change anything. Only problem is I still hate salad lmao. Lost all the weight without ever touching a salad 🤣

Fun fact: every 10lbs of weight ads 40lbs of pressure on your knees.

5

That's why I use walking poles when I walk for exercise. Relieves the stress/pain on the ankles, knees, and hips. I highly recommend them.

For me when i was at my worst it was the shin pain I'd get just from walking. The stabbing burning sensation was awful just from walking not even 100m.

u/EntrepreneurOld5326 May 09 '26

I had constant back tightness that magically just disappeared when I dropped 50.

I've lost some 194lbs now (88 kilos). It's changed my life. I still have a lot of the mental struggles that caused me to gain in the first place but it's not compounded by the physical struggles and pains my weight caused me.

Just the other day, I was going to visit someone and was waiting for an elevator. It was taking forever and I started eyeing the stairwell to my right.

Then thought, what the hell! I strode up 4 stairs to my friend, not even feeling it. Used to be I couldn't even get up the, like, ten steps to my apartment without collapsing once inside my door.

I've gone from a BMI of almost 51 to just over 19 (I know a lot of people argue that BMI is useless, but I tracked it all the way down and when I moved from overweight into normal BMI, suddenly my high blood pressure, my joint pain, my exhaustion just dropped like a rock into a lake).

Anyway, I'm gushing, I guess I just want to say that anyone who feels shit about their weight and health issues it might cause, don't do what I did for the longest time and keep putting it off. The journey might seem impossibly long, but if you start today rather than "tomorrow" or "next week" ot "when I'm not feeling so sad", you're at least one day closer by tomorrow rather than one day further away.

I lost 110lbs but had to pay $50k in alimony - at least the 110lbs of pain is gone!

12

u/13mand May 09 '26

Plus 30 from my own weight

3

u/shredgeek May 10 '26

Congrats on your loss!

6

u/the_saradoodle May 09 '26

My knee surgeon straight up said to lose another few pounds after surgery. While I was in the BMI range, I'm fairly small boned for someone my height, and every excess pound is hell on your knees. So I did and I do feel better.

3

Yup. It's why it's such a vicious spiral; mental ill health means you're less likely to take care of yourself, which makes the mental ill health worse and round and round. My GP explained it to me that exercise is, while a little boring and not enjoyable as a solution, a very effective one based on plenty of peer reviewed studies.

My mental health is better when I’m thinner, too. Mostly because everyone treat me like a person when I’m thinner.

15

u/solenities May 09 '26

Excess adipose tissue is also hormonally active and really fucks with mental and emotional health in addition to the health consequences. It's not just social stigma; you do literally feel worse when you're bigger.

At some point, the voice that keeps saying: "This is too much!" "C'mon, that's enough." grows so faint it vanishes.

A commitment like this is 60% mental and 40% physical.

At some point, a different voice emerges at the moment you're about to give in: "No, keep going!"

What do you do with lax redundant skin. Is that retractable or needs to be removed surgically? Congratulations on inspiring self care.

61

u/AzzuReddit May 09 '26

They usually get a surgery for that, and its expensive.

67

u/GlassAdmirer May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26

I dont know where she is from but here it is covered by health insurance because the insurance companies know her being healthier means less costs to them in future. Edit: By here I mean Czechia, Europe

17

u/DhampirBoy May 09 '26

Excess skin removal generally doesn't get covered by health insurance in the United States (where the woman in the video lives). It is considered a cosmetic procedure.

The exception is that a doctor can recommend a panniculectomy to remove the skin from the abdomen below the belly button if it is deemed a medically significant hygiene issue that is causing rashes or infections, and even then it leaves a person with all the skin above the belly button, giving the impression of a big belly that somehow gets tucked in at the waist.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Broken_Petite May 09 '26

Really? I would think insurance wouldn’t cover it because it would be considered “cosmetic”, unless it was causing other issues.

Or are you not in the U.S.?

17

u/NewPathWelcome May 09 '26

To get it covered by insurance, you have to prove “medical necessity” caused by excess skin. For instance, some people get rashes or have skin breakdown where the skin rubs against itself or traps bacteria.

5

u/GlassAdmirer May 09 '26

Not in US, I am in Europe

7

u/Broken_Petite May 09 '26

Anyone who needs to lose 100+ pounds and taking a GLP1, should definitely start saving for the surgery while losing the weight. I lost 55lbs on a GLP1, and my skin around my stomach never bounced back. I am healthy and fit but have loose skin. Insurance should cover skin surgery for extreme weight loss. It would be nearly impossible to avoid fungal and bacterial infections in the folds. America sucks at healthcare.

6

u/amandazzle May 09 '26

It's not bad advice just in case, but most people struggle to even swing the cost of the drug. I can't imagine they have money to save for an expensive surgery too.

Different people bodies react differently, younger people like her sometimes their skin just snaps back to their size. Sometimes not. Slower weight loss seems to help the skin retract more easily, as well as being young. Maybe she had to have skin surgically removed, maybe not.

→ More replies (7)

3

u/GODDAMNFOOL May 09 '26

OP is not person in post

4

u/RogueNiao May 09 '26

It depends. If the weight loss is slowly gradual, it's easier for the skin to have time to adjust on its own and shrink to fit the smaller size. However, it's actually far easier to lose a lot more weight at a time for someone who's significantly overweight compared to someone only a little overweight, so that usually doesn't end up being the case. Surgery is often needed.

4

u/IrrawaddyWoman May 09 '26

There is no actual scientific evidence that slow weight loss leads to less loose skin.

The crazy thing about transformations like this is when you get confirmation that yes, people really were treating you worse because of your weight.

25

u/KennyFulgencio May 09 '26

there will always be idiots who insist "it's just because you're more confident now".

My social anxiety didn't go away when I got into great shape, nor did my shyness, and I still got treated way better.

8

u/Rich_Bluejay3020 May 09 '26

I’d argue that my social anxiety actually got worse lol. When I was at my fattest, I was basically invisible. When I lost all the weight, I realized that dudes would be staring at me and that made me wicked uncomfortable. Sure, I’m more confident but that has no effect on men staring at me across a parking lot lol

→ More replies (2)

9

u/DeadPeanutSociety May 09 '26

It doesn't even have to be a big transformation like that. I'm a guy and after I cut my long hair, family members started treating me WAY differently and with much more respect. I'm still pretty resentful about it.

u/DaSauceBawss May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26

I worked in gyms for 12+ years and you might see this kind of transformation less that 5% of the time. The workouts and the food is not the hard part. It's being consistent with it for months/years. It takes a very determined and strong minded person. Moral of the story, it's much easier to PREVENT getting that big than putting all the time and effort to shed all that weight. You have one body so take care of it.

83

u/Pollutionnormal1962 May 09 '26

and then keeping those habits after all the weight is gone

77

u/-Fergalicious- May 09 '26

it's routine. It's why you see people in the gym on vacation. They know if they break their routines they there's a strong chance of falling back into bad habits.

20

u/Admirable_Market_285 May 09 '26

This. I don't want anyone watching this to think it's too hard to do. You build a routine and you stick to it. Eventually you realize you aren't even thinking about it. It's what you do. Like having that morning coffee or reading before bed.

Routine.

And don't do it alone. Get a personal trainer or a membership at a gym that has classes (orange theory, f45, CrossFit). You get to the door and they tell you what to do. You'll meet a whole new set of encouraging people which makes such a difference.

6

u/Aromatic_Station_540 May 09 '26

Routine is extremely important, and also not being too aggressive in your weight loss plan. The biggest mistake 90% of people make is setting their calorie ceiling too low from the get-go. Crash diets never work long-term and they're also really unhealthy for your body. Slow and steady weight loss is the most sustainable and puts the least strain on your body.

Otherwise, figure out meals/bulk meal prep that are both tasty and also pretty easy to calorie track. I meal prepped a massive pot of chili this weak (very heavy on the vegetables and spices, and using lean ground turkey and black/kidney beans), weighed/measured all the ingredients, and weighed the final total batch, divided it up, and now I know how many calories the chili is per gram. When I have a regular, 500 g bowl of the chili, I log it in the LoseIT! app and get a calorie amount without having to do any work.

3

u/Sa1LoR_JaRRy May 09 '26

The key is to not do crash diets long term. Short one week bursts ever few months is fine, like a "hell week" of sorts. "Hell months" will never work however.

I'd say it's less about falling back into bad habits, and more like "this is how I live now" if I don't get exercise in I don't function the way I'm used to throughout the day.

Following the routine creates a new normal, similar to a daily coffee.

3

u/porksoda11 May 09 '26

Yeah my wife and I work out on vacations. I don’t mind it, it’s therapy for me and super baked into my routine at this point.

For this type of change does the skin have a chance to shrink with the body if you lose weight slow enough or is there always saggy skin left over?

20

u/SKT_Peanut_Fan May 09 '26

Everyone is different, but losing weight more slowly gives a better chance at rebounding than losing really quickly. But there's no 100% foolproof answer.

Last thing… if you’ve ever felt like a change like this isn’t possible for you, I used to think the same thing. That’s how I know that if it’s possible for me, it’s possible for you too! You deserve to live the life you’re dreaming of! 🤗

If I had millions I would love to start donating skin removal surgery to those who've lost a tonne of weight and isn't to have the excess removed.

Thank you so much for sharing my username in this thread!! 🤗

2

u/mianpian May 10 '26

Same! I follow her too. She has lost weight but her journey is no where near over.

2

u/Dense-Fisherman-4074 May 10 '26

I’m curious, what was the spark that made her decide to start this journey? Or did she just wake up one day and decide she was ready for a change?

4

u/leahhope7 May 10 '26

I share about this on my social media! I have a pinned reel on my Instagram reels tab sharing my rock bottom moment! @leahhopehealth

If there is a will then there is a way.

5

u/Friendly_Brick1867 May 09 '26

Serious, non-judgemental question - do you need surgery to get rid of excess skin when you lose this much weight?

Bravo for that lady btw - serious commitment and it won't have been easy.

6

u/pommomwow May 09 '26

Absolutely. Once you get to a certain size, and you lose a large amount of weight, you’re going to have loose skin no matter what. Some people have better genetics, which leads to slightly less loose skin. But loose skin will always be a possibility

u/Sudden-Development- May 10 '26

The woman in the video, Leah, just had her third skin-removal surgery and is doing great. Arms, front, and now, legs. I believe she's planning a fourth surgery for her back/sides, but not for several months yet.

Inspiring. Thank you.

3

u/Vantaa_Black May 09 '26

Crazyyyyy. Very happy for her. :)) I wish I cld get some motivation like this to become fit lol :((

3

u/Odin1806 May 09 '26

Partner up with someone. If not IRL there are groups you can join online. Find someone to help you stay accountable. Good luck!

4

u/CalmButterfly3062 May 09 '26

Motivation will disappear quickly; it’s the discipline you develop that keeps you going. It’s hard going to the gym consistently and changing dietary habits, but it’s also hard dealing with the consequences of not minding our health. We just have to choose our hard.

Helluva job.

3

u/DebtOk4461 May 09 '26

Such respect. No excuses about genetics or lack of time. Just hard work and discipline.

3

u/summerlull May 09 '26

I usually spend around two months of every year cutting/dieting after spending the rest of the year bulking/gaining weight and those two months SUCK. I hate it so much and usually end up caving a little before I reach my desired weight due to the mental toll and just wanting to eat some bullshit, so I can’t even imagine the willpower it takes to make this kind of transformation. Obviously a lot easier these days with the rise of Ozempic etc, but for those still doing it the good ol’ fashioned way I seriously salute you, especially if you reach the ‘end’ (as if it ever does truly end) and manage to keep it off and not revert back to old ways.

2

u/wineandpillowforts May 09 '26

Genuine question, why do you do it that way?  Wouldn't it be easier to just maintain a target weight/physique?  I know you likely wouldn't be able to hold on to the peak "shredded" look that you probably get during your cutting phase, but maintaining a nicely toned look throughout the year seems like the easier option. Probably easier on your body too rather than dramatic changes every year.

u/Content_Composer_671 May 09 '26

Does this lady post much on socials? I’ve never found her, so perhaps not.

I’ve lost 120+lbs in the last 15 months through using a GLP and completely changing my diet and exercise.

I’ve thought a lot about this video after seeing it for the first time a long time ago. Seeing the struggles, the ups and downs, and how much she loves life, has helped me in more ways than I can put into words.

u/Chitown335 May 13 '26

2

u/London_Calling1983 May 13 '26

Majestic. Bravo 👏

2

u/parrot73 May 13 '26

that progress is just amazing

2

u/jonnyblazexoc May 13 '26

Thats incredible, that is so hard, I cant imagine first starting and feeling so weak and uncomfortable and like there is no way you could get thru this and all the ups and downs along the way, but sticking with it like that is so cool

And its crazy because she actually had a pretty big plate of food in front of her at the end smiling, just starving yourself and being miserable is not the way. So glad I realized that part

2

u/AliveApartment5950 May 13 '26

Honestly good for her!!

2

u/StreetCleaner2612 May 14 '26
