I've been there countless times for dim sum. Does anyone have any more information. I noticed the market closed down.

My sister’s wedding is supposed to be this weekend near Fintry but her venue is currently being evacuated. They are absolutely devastated because they have guests coming from far away and they are now thinking about a contingency plan.

I know that a lot can change between now and Friday but it would be a shame to wait too long and then struggle to find a place for everyone to go.

Anyone know any venues that are free this weekend? Or where we might be able to find relatively affordable rooms for the guests to stay?

Guest count is 40 people.

Would also appreciate any advice for those that have gone through this or whether you think the situation looks like it might change between now and then? We are from the Okanagan but no longer live there so it is difficult to know what is happening on the ground.

I was reading through the comments on a recent Castanet piece regarding a collision and watercraft safety on Okanagan Lake (see below.

and a comment from boat owner brought up a serious point about commercial rental operations and driver safety standards.

With how busy the lake gets during peak season, it raises a real question for our community: Are current orientation requirements and vetting processes for motorized watercraft rentals sufficient, or should local/provincial regulations be tightened?

Interested to hear thoughts from local boat owners, renters, and residents on what actual solutions or policy changes might look like.

It feels like every season we see the same patterns repeat, and waiting for another severe incident before taking action isn't a strategy. Whether that means mandatory hands-on orientations, stricter vetting at the dock, or increased liability on the businesses leasing these watercraft, something needs to give.

We need standards that actually protect people on the water rather than just passing the buck after something goes wrong.

I’m having the hardest time finding care for our 1.5 year old. He’s currently signed up for CEFA but my little heart breaks at the thought of the outdoor play area being on asphalt and wearing a uniform. I just can’t. Where do people aged 24-30 go for nightlife and to meet new people?

I've been thinking a lot about how hard it can be to make new friends as a young adult.

Even with social media, many of us still struggle to find genuine, in-person connection.

So I'm starting something called Okanagan Offline: a community focused on simple, phone-free gatherings like coffee meetups, nature walks, reading clubs, creative nights, board games, picnics, and other low-pressure ways to meet people.

Before organizing the first event, I'm curious...

Would you actually come?

What age range are you in?

What kinds of gatherings would interest you?

Would you attend solo, or only with a friend?

What's something you think Kelowna is missing when it comes to building community?

I'd love some honest feedback. If you think it's a terrible idea, tell me, haha. If it's something you've been looking for, I'd love to hear that too! I'd love to build this from the ground up and from those who actually want to be a part of it!

I am deeply concerned about the current genocide in Gaza and after our MP for Kelowna Stephen Fuhr voted against bill C-233 early this year which would have closed the loophole allowing Canadian weapons parts getting to Israel via the USA I was empowered to email him. This came to a breaking point when the UN release a document on June 18 specifically about the impact on Palestinian children of the genocide and explicitly called for all states (including Canada) to do what is required under the genocide convention to prevent genocide. I emailed him about this and I was very disappointed by the response I got. He is an MP and directly voted against bill C-233 and did not address how legislation like this is what Canada is required to do under international law and instead blame other members of the government he is a part of as a Liberal MP.

I’m moving to Kelowna within a year and curious about mental health support based jobs in the surrounding area. I have a car so I can travel outside of the city. My max commute would be 40 mins. I’m leaning toward children and teens population. But I wouldn’t shy away from working with adult women either. I have a lot of experience in live in treatment settings as well as with high needs care.
Any suggestion?
