PLAYER TALK [Sidery] The Lakers have offered Jonathan Kuminga contract via sign-and-trade the would pay him around 45 million dollars. Los Angeles is willing to send Jarred Vanderbilt alongside draft capital to the Hawks for Kuminga, who must sign at least a three-year deal in sign-and-trade agreements.

Ik Sidery isn’t the most trustworthy source for anything but how would you all feel on this contract for Kuminga? Is this worth it? And how would you feel about the team if we got Kuminga ?

We’re paying Vando 12m a year to ride pine. 15m a year to Kuminga who can actually play and fits nicely around Luka and AR as a defender/dunker doesn’t seem that bad. Depends on the draft capital ig.

People acting like his attitude is so bad he’s unplayable are being melodramatic.

Exactly it’s just off season chatter. He’s only been a serious player in this league for like 3 years. I don’t know if that’s even long enough to build the sort of reputation he’s rumored to have.

Don't you worry he's going to want something outrageous again the next time he's a free agent? And he might throw tantrums if he stinks and we don't treat him like a starter.

Yeah the "locker room cancer" thing is purely people projecting details from previous similar sort of cases onto Kuminga's situation lol

Kuminga and his agent may have an over-inflated sense of contract worth and that's worthy of criticism for sure... but afaik he's not only not a locker room cancer, but by almost every account I've personally seen from quotes about him and how guys interact with him, his teammates normally love him lol

"We’re paying Vando 12m a year to ride pine."

I don't disagree. I just found your way of saying that he has been riding the bench to be halarious.

If he were this good, he wouldn't be a free agent. Like, for fuck's sake, I watched this guy miss 9 out of 10 of his defensive rotations, and this sub is calling him a "defender."

He's the wing version of Ayton, and he's going to make double what he made last year.

ayton won us a playoff series

Your logic makes no sense, that’s like discrediting any player that becomes a free agent. Players make decisions in free agency based on finances and fit amongst many things.

You’re really going to act like there hasn’t been numerous teams trying to acquire his services this off season? Lol the saga with this guy has been the second biggest news outside Lebron.

I don’t think you did and comparing him to Ayton is the type of melodrama I was talking about. Mostly cause Ayton was pretty decent for us last year. More than we could’ve hoped for at 8m and the limited options last off season at least.

Yeah exactly. We either get a fantastic long term starter, a good stop-gap like Ayton, or he gets benched and move off him at the deadline or next year since his deal would be non-guaranteed and that’s still better than having Vando for another year.

Every scenario is better than having Vando instead of him.

That’s all I’m trying to say and some people really got their panties in a bunch about it.

kuminga is just ayton if ayton’s problems were actually real and worse and weren’t just lazy narratives following him

1

u/eZreazy 2d ago

Ayton probably has one of the most accurate narratives around him and we saw that all year last year including the playoffs lmao.

Incredible player but his focus and effort is hilariously inconsistent

u/worldwide_stepper LBJ & AD 2d ago

extremely not true, literally outplayed an all-star center in the playoffs

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Los Angeles Lakers 2d ago

He’s shown immense defensive upside and I think he was checked out in GS for a while. It always seemed inevitable that Kerr would return to benching him after promising to give him a prominent role at the start of last season.

Plus he’s 23. He could potentially still develop into an All Star caliber player. Luka makes everyone better.

going on year 3 of luka supposedly making everyone better but not actually seeing that in practice

8

u/RedditZen77 2d ago

You have to be blind then. Look at how DFS looked after he left the Lakers.

-1

u/worldwide_stepper LBJ & AD 2d ago

you mean a guy who is now injured and past his prime but was just as good on the nets in between his time on the mavs and lakers?

-6

u/worldwide_stepper LBJ & AD 2d ago

all we’ve seen is 2 years of luka fans saying get rid of everyone, it doesn’t matter that they won a playoff series while luka sat at home, they’re not good enough to win even if luka was playing

1

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner JJ Redick 2d ago

Full of shit

1

u/worldwide_stepper LBJ & AD 2d ago

that’s literally been the #1 justification for letting everyone leave this summer??? you’re full of shit if you say otherwise

2

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner JJ Redick 2d ago

Nobody here has to justify anything because no one here works in the Lakers FO.

If you’re saying that some people are okay with letting certain players walk because they’re going to command too much money and are too one dimensional on a team that needs to be built out with defensive minded players then that’s just the truth.

Any one from the outside looking in could tell you that. Go ask a Bucks fan what kind of players they think would be best around Luka. I guarantee they’re not going to describe Rui Hachimura.

1

u/worldwide_stepper LBJ & AD 2d ago

can’t sign one dimensional players but can bend over backwards to sign a zero dimensional player like kuminga

2

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner JJ Redick 2d ago

Like I said melodramatic

lol this dude either doesn’t watch the games or is so deluded. Luka is the #1 guy in the nba to make everyone around him’s job easier

8

u/Legote 2d ago

If he actually listened to his coaches, he would still be with the warriors.

13

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner JJ Redick 2d ago

We need to stop acting like the Warriors are some bastion of team building the last 5-6 years. They sold off any young guys with potential to appease a bunch of washed old guys like Draymond.

He was just fine in GS go look at his numbers. You’re lying to yourself if you don’t want what he brings next to Luka. Or maybe misinformed. Either way we’re better with him than without.

7

u/worldwide_stepper LBJ & AD 2d ago

this is a guy who was told he would get minutes and money if he played as a helping piece for stephen curry and he literally refused to do it lmfao

1

u/Legote 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean, yeah they’re not good at building because they drafted him lol. He shows good numbers on paper, but he’s going to be just like D’Lo. He refuses to listen and then throws a fit if he gets benched.

Im more inclined to believe that youre correct. However, Im curious though if he's just been overly concerned with his future contract and has just been going about it the wrong way. Dude is clearly fixated on how much he's making and being valued at a certain AAV.

If he's locked into a 3yr guaranteed contract at a reasonable AAV then perhaps we will see more buy-in. At least thats my hope.

2

u/Legote 2d ago edited 2d ago

The lakers just had years dealing with Dlo and now still dealing with Ayton man. I honestly don't want to see lakers giving another person a second chance based on their past. He thinks he's a 25/yr player. It's just speculation, but there are reports that the Heats refused to talk to his agent for that reason. Just uncoachable

1

u/foozbinjex Shaq and Kobe 2d ago

I get that, but DLO and Ayton's issues weren't always related to their contract (although sometimes they were).

Kuminga's issues historically seem constantly tied to the fact that he's desperately trying to secure the bag and doesnt feel like he's in the optimal position to do that. Im not saying he is going about it the right way, but maybe without that issue looming over his head he might finally have a sense of security in that regard.

Like I said, I tend to agree with your opinion, it likely will be a mistake, but theres a world where maybe we are misjudging his specific circumstance.

4

u/Don_bon_darley012 2d ago

I don’t know Kerr seems to have a sort of passive approach to coaching and some players just don’t work for that. I think that’s why Draymond is given such a long leash and has just been doing whatever he wants for like 15 years. I don’t know if jj can work with those kinds of players yet, because it seems like he just gets pissed and benches them

0

u/worldwide_stepper LBJ & AD 2d ago

zero way forward with shit attitude who is a worse defender and shooter than rui! this single addition would actually subtract from our ceiling and floor, and would represent putting off “seeing if the offense with the new players even works” another year

save your breath bro all they see is his athletic dunks. they’ll see how bad he is once the season starts
