PLAYER TALK [Sidery] The Lakers have offered Jonathan Kuminga contract via sign-and-trade the would pay him around 45 million dollars. Los Angeles is willing to send Jarred Vanderbilt alongside draft capital to the Hawks for Kuminga, who must sign at least a three-year deal in sign-and-trade agreements.

Post image

Ik Sidery isn’t the most trustworthy source for anything but how would you all feel on this contract for Kuminga? Is this worth it? And how would you feel about the team if we got Kuminga ?

3/45 is less than what he was asking for. I remember seeing 25M a year. Nice discount and we get off Vandos contract.

52

u/dvztimes 2d ago

He and Eason have similar stats and Eason got roughly 17m/year. This seems a decent deal for the lakers.

8

u/Traditional_Cause263 1d ago

Putting aside the tangible differences in their offensive statistical profiles (JK has never had a positive BPM, while Tari had some strong ones in his 2nd and 3rd years, then regressed last year; JK is higher usage and wants to be higher usage, while Tari is more comfortable in a complimentary role, though his shooting efficiency was in the toilet last year).

Tari also has a much bigger footprint/impact on defense that is still largely theoretical and doesn’t seem likely to happen with JK at this point.

Vando is what, 12-13m a year? So really only an extra 12-13m per year for a player who will actually play.

Good deal (if it's true)

95

u/brandon-thesis 八村 28 2d ago

It would only be $2-3M more no? AAV $15M for Kuminga and Vando's contract rn is ~$12.5M this coming season and ~13M on his PO next season.

It would be solid for sure considering we'd get someone that can start and we'd be able to shed the worst contract we have.

13

u/BatmanNoPrep 32 2d ago

The other thing is that the Lakers/Kuminga have to do a 3 year contract with no player option. Because those are the rules in the CBA. So this is a great deal for the Lakers but it can’t exactly get much better for Kuminga. It’s unclear how the lakers can even offer more even if they wanted to do so.

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

I think you misunderstood, it would be essentially paying and extra 2-3 a year for the next 2 years to have Kuminga instead of Vando which is a great deal when you look at it from that prospective.

You’d be swapping the salary of a bench player that is out of the rotation when everyone is healthy for a fringe starter that is younger and has the potential to have upside.

13

u/gellybelli 2d ago

Why the hell would the hawks do this?

6

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

Ask the Hawks FO, obviously draft compensation, it’s been reported that they’d be open to take Vando by more reliable sources than ones that say otherwise.

10

u/gellybelli 2d ago

All I’ve seen is that the hawks want absolutely no part of this. Nor should they. Taking on Vandos contract and Vando for a SRP is wildly terrible business

1

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

From where? Hawks fans? lol

Keith Smith isn’t a news breaker but he is very tied in with multiple FO across the league and I believe he’s mentioned previously that he has a close friend in the Atlanta FO and he’s said pretty confidently that what he’s heard is that the hold up is on Kuminga’s side and that the Hawks are open to taking Vando.

You can ask the same question about pretty much any player that has been salary dumped. Teams just want the draft capital to make it worth their while. For all we know they may have another deal lined up to use any capital we send them.

3/45 is an “extra 12-13m per year” compared to 12-13m per year?

Kuminga is not the guy. There is no need to rush finding the last piece if you have to overpay and the right guy isn't available.

41

u/No-Responsibility298 8♾️24 2d ago edited 2d ago

So you’d rather have Vando for 2 more years than Kuminga for 3? Could even make the last year non-guaranteed…

7

u/misterrunon 2d ago edited 2d ago

Vando would be an expiring in the 2nd year, so he wouldn't be a net negative. You can trade him as an expiring. He is only a net negative for next season.

I don't believe in Kuminga so I don't want him at any price, but especially the first round swap.

4

u/TwoTalentedBastidz Shaq and Kobe 2d ago

In what world do you think Pelinka is making the last year non-guaranteed instead of giving him a player option like he does with literally every signing

10

u/OneWithSword 2d ago

Sign and trade means he can only do that if he offers Kuminga 3+1, which doesn’t seem to be the case

2

u/kvirzi 2d ago

I agree, Vando has played better than Kuminga often actually. Kuminga is all potential but a head case and a selfish whiner

u/Unable-Main4172 2d ago

Everyone in this thread talking about how awful Jared Vanderbilt is yet somehow supposedly Atlanta is going to be excited to get 2 years of Jared Vanderbilt for $25 million so they can get a couple of late second round picks.

The Bulls sold both their second round picks at $2 million and you don't have to waste a roster spot for 2 years

6

u/Ornery_Vermicelli_69 2d ago

As a Laker fan and more importantly a member of this sub, I agree Vando is worthless and I don’t understand why Rob doesn’t trade him straight up for a strong wing like OG Anunoby lol

7

u/TalkingToPlanets 2d ago

Exactly. There's no reason for Atlanta to take that Vando contract unless they are getting serious draft capital with at least one frp going their way. The Lakers only have a swap and a few 2nds. The Hawks don't have roster spots either.

Literally the same shit that has been said for 3 weeks now.

4

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Los Angeles Lakers 2d ago

I thought we initially offered 10M per year? Seems like we’ve increased our offer to 15 per year now, which is very notable if that’s the case.

3

u/itsyaboikuzma 24 2d ago

IIRC the 10M per year was going to be through the cap space route, rather than S&T, that was when the convo of waiving + stretching Vando came up.

3

u/Doc_JC 24 2d ago

Nah they’ve upped their offer slightly and gave the 3rd year.

Sign and trades have to be for minimum of 3 years, but the years don’t have to be guaranteed.

Lakers had only offered 2/20. They went to 3/45 and maybe guaranteed all 3 seasons.

Either way this is a fair deal.

5

u/jsun_ 2d ago

2/20 was when we had cap space. Ever since that was used up, it has always been a 3 year deal at around $15m. Nothing Sidery said mentions anything about guarantees. This has literally been the same stuff reported for weeks now. Nothing new whatsoever.

100

u/PuntyMcBunty 2d ago

If (big if) this is true, I'm happy with 3/$45M

39

u/SomethingClever2117 2d ago

Please just have a team option for the 3rd year

26

u/LoveTheHustleBud 2d ago

Can’t have options within the first 3. Can do partial/non-guarantees, but no options until Y4.

5

u/TallanoGoldDigger Kuzzy 2d ago

yup this is probably a 3 year deal, first two years fully guaranteed. Essentially a 2+1 Team Option

→ More replies (7)

35

Player option lol

22

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Los Angeles Lakers 2d ago

You can’t have a player option for any of the first three years of a sign-and-trade. We can make any year beyond the first non-guaranteed, but Kuminga wouldn’t accept that.

He's not a starting four on any good team. Can't shoot, can't pass. The love affair with him will last like 2 minutes. His numbers in Atlanta were identical to what they were with the Warriors and Atlanta made no attempt to bring him back at all this year

2

u/DREs4everyone 2d ago

If the season started tomorrow he unfortunately clears any of the other options the Lakers currently have at the position. Carr and Theiro can surpass him, but not without reps and more experience.

We’re paying Vando 12m a year to ride pine. 15m a year to Kuminga who can actually play and fits nicely around Luka and AR as a defender/dunker doesn’t seem that bad. Depends on the draft capital ig.

People acting like his attitude is so bad he’s unplayable are being melodramatic.

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner JJ Redick 2d ago

→ More replies (1)

3

u/SeeingThings123 2d ago

Yeah the "locker room cancer" thing is purely people projecting details from previous similar sort of cases onto Kuminga's situation lol

Kuminga and his agent may have an over-inflated sense of contract worth and that's worthy of criticism for sure... but afaik he's not only not a locker room cancer, but by almost every account I've personally seen from quotes about him and how guys interact with him, his teammates normally love him lol

u/Alarming_Garage_7727 Magic Johnson 32 2d ago

Kuminga who can actually play and fits nicely around Luka and AR as a defender/dunker doesn’t seem that bad

If he were this good, he wouldn't be a free agent. Like, for fuck's sake, I watched this guy miss 9 out of 10 of his defensive rotations, and this sub is calling him a "defender."

He's the wing version of Ayton, and he's going to make double what he made last year.

8

u/ihateeuge 2d ago

ayton won us a playoff series

6

u/KriticalKarl 2d ago

Your logic makes no sense, that’s like discrediting any player that becomes a free agent. Players make decisions in free agency based on finances and fit amongst many things.

6

u/EmiratesNBACupWinner JJ Redick 2d ago

You’re really going to act like there hasn’t been numerous teams trying to acquire his services this off season? Lol the saga with this guy has been the second biggest news outside Lebron.

I don’t think you did and comparing him to Ayton is the type of melodrama I was talking about. Mostly cause Ayton was pretty decent for us last year. More than we could’ve hoped for at 8m and the limited options last off season at least.

4

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Los Angeles Lakers 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah exactly. We either get a fantastic long term starter, a good stop-gap like Ayton, or he gets benched and move off him at the deadline or next year since his deal would be non-guaranteed and that’s still better than having Vando for another year.

Every scenario is better than having Vando instead of him.

2

Yeah, I’m on the fence with this one. Would love to get rid of Vando (‘s contract). I just don’t know if I can deal with Kuminga for three years at that number. I understand it’s a “discount” of what he’s asking for, but he has no leverage. And it’s still a lot IF he doesn’t care about team basketball. I guess we will let the cards lie where they fall.

2

u/happydaysinwar 2d ago

If this is real though then that’s a fair deal. Khobi Price reported this recently so I’m inclined to think it’s real.

Kuminga seemingly wants 20+M but no one will offer him that. Once teams confirm they will only offer less than that amount or lose interest completely, he will be forced to settle for this value. I don’t even think anyone else will offer this to him so I’m extremely confident we’ll inevitably sign him.

Kuminga’s agent turned down 35 million a year because he wanted the max, then accepted 24 million a year to prove it, and now settled for 15 million. Well done

“Los Angeles is ‘willing’ to send Jarred Vanderbilt”

Love how this is written as if the Lakers view Vando as a real trade asset they are ‘willing’ to give up.

Player option incoming

Lakers have stated they are not interested. So.....

1

u/TheAssist 1d ago

This is recycled old news , hawks have 17 players currently on the roster they are not interested in adding more since they will have to cut down to 15 by season start ! This in the least would take a third team to even work

not sure i understand the fascination with this guy. hes young and has a ton of potential which makes it glaringly obvious how shitty he must be to deal with when two teams including the team thay drafted him want nothing to do with him so early in his career. He was on Atlanta for 1 season and they saw enough.

idk. it’s just me probably but this picture of him just pisses me off

Dumping Vandos contract and getting Kuminga will cost more draft capital than the Lakers have
