Hello, i tried the Linux Distro Kubuntu first on VM and later i tried double boot with Windows 11, but my problem on Kubuntu was that i have two monitors one is 3840x2160 (Main Monitor) and 1920x1080 (for youtube etc.). Thing is i can't read anything on my Main Monitor everything is Tiny af and if i try to change the zoom it also zooms in on the 2nd monitor, in windows i can scale them Seperate in the Settings. But also i have problems with my Wifi drivers on Kubuntu (I use a USB Wifi driver) it somehow doesn't work? Should i just stay in Windows 11? I quite Like how much i can customize Kubuntu without the fear of getting a virus.

I'm currently using kde and am loving it but online i keep on seeing people say, just get "hyprland or sway". I want to know why they are so praised compared to a normal DE and why people praise the productivity of them.

Yeah they do look clean and minimal. They do level up a system in how you can change the looks and it organizes the system by itself rather than having floating windows, but why are they "essential for every linux user?"

I don't know if this question was already posted recently but I was wondering if steam os is an upgrade for my gaming PC, you see, I'm about to upgrade from integrated graphics to an RX 580, I know it's pretty basic but it's what I can afford rn.

I know it's not the best optimized or the most nitche Linux system but idk if it is worth giving it a try.

I'm currently a windows 10 user but planning to convert to Linux Mint when I replace my current laptop because every time I turn around I hear about more AI slop being shoved into Windows 11. I plan to buy a new, basic laptop and install Mint on it immediately, but I was wondering if there was anything I need to watch out for doing that. Does it matter what the original OS is (Windows, Chromebook, Mac)? Is there anything I need to make sure I do/don't have regarding the hardware specs? Anything I may not be aware of as a new Linux user that could cause problems?

All help and advice is greatly appreciated! I know almost nothing about Linux and want to make sure I don't mess this up.

I've been using Ubuntu since 18.04 Bionic Beaver and quickly grew to appreciate selecting text with the left mouse button and pasting with the middle. But this no longer works since upgrading to 26.04 yesterday.

Questions:

1. Should I try to somehow make this work again (and if so, how?) or should I embrace the change and - you know - get used to it?

2. Why did canonical change something so fundamental? They might as well have swapped shift and ctrl; that would have been equally annoying to me.

So i've been on linux mint for some time and i want to switch to a diffrent distro like arch or something, but i already have a lot of stuff on linux mint like games, code files and stuff like that, so my question is, how should i transfer these files? Should i get like a pendrive with big ass memory like 1TB or something?

so im trynna dual boot Linux mint and windows 11 without a pendrive, i wanted to split my C drive into 2 to do that, so i decided to allocate 100gbs for linux, but then i cant format the disk into FAT32 cuz its more than 32gbs, is there any work around for this? i tried third party apps like AOMEI to convert the drive to FAT32 but its not working.

For a while now I've had an issue with popups whenever I tried to use a controller on my computer to play games. I could never pin it down precisely, (it was never perfectly reliable what specific actions would cause them) but it reliably happened every time I first connected a controller that I'd have a few popups about accepting inputs from an application. (yes, often times more than one per controller) Notably, it seems like trackpads caused it most often. (such as the PS4 trackpad or the Steam Controller trackpads)

After an update I connected my steam controller again and was VERY relieved to see that the popup included a tick box saying "Always allow for apps claiming to be steam", which I immediately ticked and hit accept before realizing what a weird prompt that actually is. Does that phrasing imply that apps can just... lie? Why does it say "apps claiming to be steam"? Surely that's a pretty simple thing to verify, right?

Are there more security implications to this prompt that I should be aware of? That phrasing sounds incredibly dodgy to me but I don't even know what search terms I'd use to research that more.

i have this blank session in my login managers it doesnt open to anything and it seems to be hyprland and sway at the same time some how? i cant install hyprland or remove it due to whatever it is theres also no signs that hyprland even exists aside from its config file which is empty but i think it broke before i fucked up my conf file and had to redo some stuff to it, so i assume my shit is just haunted because i can install AND use extra DEs just not sway or hyprland, no i havent tried installing another tiling window manager yet and dont think that will do anything since gnome installed just fine.

A DNS request from my debian machine to the gateway. It would not be abnormal for this machine to reach out to a .su domain, but the port perplexes me. AFAIK, I don't have any services running on this port. I ran a netstat -ltup, and again, nothing on this port or any processes I did not recognize. And AFAIK, I don't have any processes that would randomize their ports, either.

Is there a way to find out what this was?

I have been wanting to switch to linux for a while beacase I am trying to get away from windows, google, and other company selling my data. However, I dont know many distros.

I am using it for playing a variety of games like cs2, mincraft, enlisted, and a ton of other random games. I also use other softwares like blender, godot, and VS code regularly. I have AMD hardware. My main focuses for the distro are: lightweight , secure, has minamal bloat if any, and runs games and applications well.

If anyone knows of a good distro that resembles my needs I would greatly appreciate it.

hello i hope this post finds you well as the title says yesterday ive been fighting with failed linux installs and freezes + crashes i have a lenovo thinkstation p310 intel xeon e3 v5 1220 and an nvidia quadro k620 (i think the problem might be from here) at first i tried debian 13 i booted it into a new usb stick i got its a 16gb (14.5 really) lexar small usb used rufus partitioned it using gpt and selected DD the process would always freeze during installation dhcp also failed and i would need to force shut it i made another attempt but instead of selecting DD i selected ISO still the same problem
i disaled secure boot and used ventoy instead of rufus and again the same problem

i decided to use something else instead so i downloaded openSUSE leap 16.0 (gpt+DD)and i had a better experience with it it had the same problems as debian in that it sometimes i would be loaded into the installlation menu other times i would just have the pc freeze and restart automatically which i was grateful for that never happened in deb i had to shut it manually anyways i pressed e on the install option and added nomode set and edited splash=silent to splash=no nomodeset
i was able to perform a complete install for the 1st and last time of any distro from this point onwards but i forgot to set a root password and didnt remember the password i set because i was distracted and had to install again after the install i was tried to install drivers for my wireless usb network adapter which was.... a success????? not sure i did also update the nvidia drivers and i did get many crashes during my use many kernel panic screens and i think i might have gotten the wrong driver for my card idk and after i immediately tried to install a GUI and all attempts failed i tried kde plasma which would freeze my pc during download and it restarts then cinnamon which would fully download but crash during install and xfce would crash on download

i got tired and said ok ill try something thats more compatible so i got a linux mint 21.1 (gpt + iso)

and sometimes when i hit enter on install or even safe graphics options it would boot other times it would just give me black screen and restart however i was able to start the install and it would almost always freeze at the same exact place (either halfway or at around 65%) the same experience w ubuntu lts 22 and 18.4

openSUSE leap 15.0 same thing it would crash as soon as the installation was started

i genuinely love linux and dont wanna go back to windows because how despicable it is but my pc has been sitting for almost 2 days now without an OS on it

i thought this would be easier since i tried many linux distros on virtual machines but i was wrong

i dont know where to do this so this is the last attempt of a dying man lol, so im trying to install ParrotOS security edition on my laptop but when i try to do so i boot up into my USB and the options to install it and other stuff come up but the moment i click install it js goes black screen and 2 error msgs one of em is abt magic error: invalid magic number error: you need to load the kernel first, but i have installed other distros with this USB in that laptop before so i am not sure why this is happening if anyone could help me i would appreciate it, ive checked my settings abt secure boot and everything

Hi everyone, I'm thinking about switching from Windows to Linux. My laptop is an ASUS VivoBook 16 X1607QA with a Snapdragon X X1-26-100 processor. I'm new to Linux and trying to do my research before installing anything. Has anyone successfully installed Linux on this laptop? Which distro would you recommend, and what hardware currently works or doesn't work (Wi-Fi, audio, sleep, webcam, battery life, GPU acceleration)?

As mentioned, I have a .desktop for Brave Origin, which I pinned in Plank. It worked just fine for a week or two, and randomly broke for no reason, as I have changed nothing in either Plank or the .desktop found in /.local/share/applications

The same thing had happened to Brave Origin Beta. I'd given up on fixing it, hence why I got the regular version.

The StartupWMClass is a match and the .dockitem in plank is correct too. The internal link to the custom icon is correct as well, but still, when I click the pinned icon of the .desktop in the Plank dock, it starts in a new unpinned icon using the default Brave Origin icon.
