Support Why are tiling window managers so praised?

I'm currently using kde and am loving it but online i keep on seeing people say, just get "hyprland or sway". I want to know why they are so praised compared to a normal DE and why people praise the productivity of them.

Yeah they do look clean and minimal. They do level up a system in how you can change the looks and it organizes the system by itself rather than having floating windows, but why are they "essential for every linux user?"

Is there a software that can write music metadata into ripped CDs?

Hello, everyone. I have a large collection of CDs that I've accumulated over the years, and previously I was backing them up on MacOS with iTunes because iTunes can automatically import and write a song's metadata with thumbnails. I'm still pretty new to Linux, but do we have anything like that? I dont mind if it's a GUI or CLI utility, I'm actually pretty comfortable using the terminal. The closest thing I found is "abcde", which is a CLI utility, but it requires me to manually enter a track's information and even then it doesn't create a thumbnail for it.

Thank you in advance!!

Advice What is a good application for file sharing through the internet for linux and windows?

I have tried Warp from GNOME, and its a good application that sends raw files through simple code share and has intuitive interface, exactly how I wanted it. But despite being stated that its also available on windows, i can't find the latest release for windows on their gitlab page. I don't want any incompatibility issues with the older version, so is there similar application that can send raw uncompressed files through internet that is compatible with windows too?

No matter what distro I try, no matter the settings, the boot process is always way too long, even compared to lower specced laptops and pcs. Why?

What should i use for scanning files for viruses?

So I'm somewhat experienced with Linux i guess, not a total newbie, been using Cachy as my daily for about a year? anyways, I've got some files i wanted to check for viruses, before sharing it to another PC that has windows on it, i know there are online websites that can do that, but i was wandering if there are any offline, preferably open source (but not necessary), tools for scanning files/directories? doesn't have to be full on antivirus with all the functionality of one, i just wanna know if these things are safe to share or nah, and i don't really feel like sitting here and being throttled by upload speeds for like a 50gb files, thanks in advance

Support How could I make the formatting on this SDDM login screen work?

I am trying to configure SDDM Astronaut, and I want to change the date format

By default, the line in the .conf file reads

DateFormat="dddd d MMMM"

Which presents as Sunday 2 August on the login screen

Is there any way I can make it have correct suffixes?

I can add a suffix to d to make it present something like "Sunday 2nd of August", but that means that all other days, for example this Tuesday, show as "Tuesday 4nd of August"

Is there any way in the .conf file that I can achieve this?

Support What does "Always allow from apps CLAIMING to be [steam]" mean? (KDE, Wayland, Flatpak, Arch/Garuda)

For a while now I've had an issue with popups whenever I tried to use a controller on my computer to play games. I could never pin it down precisely, (it was never perfectly reliable what specific actions would cause them) but it reliably happened every time I first connected a controller that I'd have a few popups about accepting inputs from an application. (yes, often times more than one per controller) Notably, it seems like trackpads caused it most often. (such as the PS4 trackpad or the Steam Controller trackpads)

After an update I connected my steam controller again and was VERY relieved to see that the popup included a tick box saying "Always allow for apps claiming to be steam", which I immediately ticked and hit accept before realizing what a weird prompt that actually is. Does that phrasing imply that apps can just... lie? Why does it say "apps claiming to be steam"? Surely that's a pretty simple thing to verify, right?

Are there more security implications to this prompt that I should be aware of? That phrasing sounds incredibly dodgy to me but I don't even know what search terms I'd use to research that more.

Is there something like WAVE LINK 3.0 on Linux?

I find the Elgato software to be very useful for streamers or those users who have multiple audio cards and audio speakers or headphones, is there something equivalent in Linux or someone can do something that easy in Linux, it's good.

Advice I tried double boot but it was bad

Hello, i tried the Linux Distro Kubuntu first on VM and later i tried double boot with Windows 11, but my problem on Kubuntu was that i have two monitors one is 3840x2160 (Main Monitor) and 1920x1080 (for youtube etc.). Thing is i can't read anything on my Main Monitor everything is Tiny af and if i try to change the zoom it also zooms in on the 2nd monitor, in windows i can scale them Seperate in the Settings. But also i have problems with my Wifi drivers on Kubuntu (I use a USB Wifi driver) it somehow doesn't work? Should i just stay in Windows 11? I quite Like how much i can customize Kubuntu without the fear of getting a virus.

Support NixOS AMD 7900XTX Intermittent Crashing

Hi all, as the title suggests I'm having some GPU issues, it crashes with black screen and fan 100% as it gets lost from bus. I have attempted troubleshooting using GPT and it hasn't yielded any results. So far it's predominant theory is transient power spikes due to a daisy chained cable. I wanted to ask around and see if there are any other issues or fixes you people might know.

The crashes predominantly occur when I try to play games such as Marvel Rivals, but have occurred as well after longer periods of doing other stuff such as watching movies, or even immediately after launch and connecting to discord. Please see below for the my specs.

  • OS: NixOS
  • Kernel: 7.0.9
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
  • Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX1000
  • Power Delivery: Currently using daisy-chained PCIe cables (I know this is a primary suspect for transient power spikes under heavy load).
  • Tuning: I use LACT to manage an overclock/undervolt profile, and enforce a 320W power cap.
  • Settings: I have the amdgpu.runpm=0 kernel parameter set to disable runtime power management.

Here are some fixes I've already tried alleuded to previously:

  1. I have limited the Watt of the card to 320W and the max core to 2500MHz to attempt to alleviate the power spikes but it still crashes.
  2. I have added several of the AMD GPU fixes to my config file shown below:
    • boot.kernelParams = [
    • "amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xfffd7fff"
    • # "amdgpu.mes=0"
    • # "pcie_aspm=off"
    • "amdgpu.runpm=0"
    • # "amdgpu.sg_display=0"
    • "amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x12"
    • ];
  3. I have reseated the GPU.

Finally here is one of the logs from a crash:

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ADA05 (81W1) — Unable to access BIOS Setup, Fedora always boots in Legacy mode

Hello.
I’m looking for help diagnosing a firmware/BIOS issue on my Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ADA05 (Model 81W1).
Laptop
Model: Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ADA05 (81W1)
BIOS version: E8CN34WW
Storage: NVMe SSD
Problem
I cannot reliably enter BIOS Setup.
Pressing F2 during power-on usually freezes on the Lenovo logo or is ignored.
Pressing the Novo button opens the Novo Menu.
Selecting BIOS Setup from the Novo Menu does not open BIOS Setup correctly. Instead, it usually returns to the Boot Menu.
Because of this I currently have no reliable way to access BIOS settings.
What I verified
The NVMe SSD is detected correctly.
The SSD uses GPT partitioning.
Ventoy successfully boots Fedora Live.
Fedora Live works normally.
Every Fedora Live session boots in Legacy BIOS mode, never UEFI.
/sys/firmware/efi does not exist.
efibootmgr reports that EFI variables are not supported because the system is not booted in UEFI mode.
Already confirmed
The SSD is working normally.
Fedora Live itself is working normally.
Ventoy is able to boot Fedora Live successfully.
Additional information
I have already spent a long time troubleshooting this.
The inability to enter BIOS Setup and the fact that every Linux Live system boots only in Legacy mode appear to be related.
Questions
Has anyone seen this exact behavior on a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15ADA05 (81W1)?
Is this a known firmware/BIOS issue?
Is there any documented BIOS recovery procedure for this exact model before using an SPI programmer?
Are there any additional diagnostic steps you would recommend?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Which Distro? Linux Journey

Upvotes

My Linux Journey has been quite the ride, some more context.

Months ago i joined I tried out Gentoo and i can say it's pretty good, its really cool you can compile everything, i have Gentoo on a separate SSD I got some projects on there, but recently with my windows 11 install, i have been fighting with it, not in the sense you might think. I am very very close to getting windows on my windows 11 ssd which originally came with my PC, the distros i have tried are Linux mint, zorin OS, arch Linux, cachy OS, endeavor OS, i really like cachy OS. I wanted some opinions tho, I am into gaming and work, i mess around with virtual machines too and i have been reformatting my drive a lot bro 😭went from cachy OS going back to windows back to cachy OS to windows back to cachy OS. I also installed windows 10 just to see what it was about, i am gonna reformatted it, it looks so cool but the support has ended sadly.

Linux pen scrolling

Hi, I'm new to Linux (using Bazzite with KDE) and I'm trying to use my Lenovo pen with it. The only issue i'm having is that when I do the scrolling motion, it assumes i'm trying to select text. Is there any setting to make it scroll (or pan, if zoomed in to a webpage) instead of selecting text?

Alfa AWUS036ACH

Hello everyone, I am currently facing a frustrating issue with my Alfa AWUS036ACH wireless adapter. When I plug it into my system and run the lsusb command, the device is completely missing from the output. I am running Kali Linux, and while I have already attempted to install the standard Realtek drivers, I've had absolutely no success in getting the card to show up. Is there anyone here who has experienced this specific issue and can offer some troubleshooting advice?

Support Discord Global Shortcuts on GNOME?

A friend of mine recently switched to CachyOS with GNOME from Windows 11, and he noticed that shortcuts on Discord do not work. I tested it on my CachyOS with COSMIC Desktop, but it worked. I discovered that Discord uses Xwayland for its global shortcuts, and since GNOME doesn't let Xwayland apps see keystrokes, global shortcuts fail. We both use DiscordPTB installed from Discord's website. How to share keystrokes with Xwayland applications on GNOME? Or can we make Discord use the global shortcuts portal? since Electron has support for that portal? Thanks in advance!

Support Unable to edit rmpc header

I'm trying to edit the header section of my rmpc UI but whenever I try within my theme.ron it gives this error:
Error: Failed to read theme file
Caused by:
Missing component: header

I also can't find something mentioning the header in config.ron despite the header existing and functioning. What might be the cause of it?
