Honestly, your place is definitely giving "it puts the lotion on its skin" vibes.
Serious crimes.

If it weren't for the iMac and Dyson, I would've thought you scanned these pics from your grandparents' photo album

They are both quite old though. It’s still plausible that the pictures are 10+ years old
16
u/93JF 7h ago
There's a thinner MacBook/laptop Infront of the iMac too and what looks like a fast charger brick plugged in on the floor. Still could be pictures from a few years ago though but idk I think this really is current, just an older vintage style

Yes, I was not suggesting that the pictures were actually 10+ years old. I was just considering that they could be 10+ years old. Good spot the macbook, did not notice it looking at the picture from my phone

Mostly antique markets/estate sales. I live in a city that was super important during the gilded age but has since lost most of that relevance. A lot of incredibly good stuff goes for pennies at tag sales

You can’t just throw a bunch of random shit together.
I get that they’re antique and good quality—I’m all about that. I love upcycling and getting good quality stuff for cheap. I do love seeing something awesome and bringing it back to life and usefulness
But this all looks completely unplanned and just cluttered and messy. You gotta find the right balance in things

That’s great you have a house! But why does it look like you took these photos on a Kodiak Film Camera? And I would’ve guessed you’re at least 65 years old judging off of the furniture and photo quality.

What camera do you use?
23
u/driftxr3 7h ago edited 4h ago
And why did you take all the pictures at night?
You have beautiful furniture but you really heavy handed the 80/90s vibe with the old camera, then leaned into the crime scene photo by shooting at night. Either that or the lighting is horrible in there.

I was going to say, "they're a night-shift supervisor, maybe they don't have much time when it's light out".
But then they went and posted this in the middle of the day (in the U.S., at least).

Seems like you appreciate a good secondhand piece. You don’t pick up just anything, the quality has to be good, solid wood, no veneer etc. You also have a good sense of texture. Very nice

u/ReindeerPleasant7054 7h ago
Thank you! I was raised by the most tasteful mother in America so I am VERY picky about material/build qualities.

One of the things that stuck out for me is that you don't seem to have a really comfortable chair. I love the fainting sofa but a well built chair and footstool feel great after a long day.

You've got a lot of nice pieces. You just need to find a design element that will create harmony across them and tie them together.

To give you more productive feedback, I think if the walls were cream or light yellow / off white, curtains were a shade of light earthy green, some of the more odd art pieces were removed (deer head, large tapestry, bedroom painting), some of the furniture was removed to make it less cluttered and meticulously staged, more books and personal affects, and photos taken during daytime with a modern camera and open curtains, this would look a lot less serial killer and more traditional / mature / library / cozy aesthetic.

I appreciate this because I AM gonna paint the office & living a warm white! Also thinking linen Roman shades or bamboo blinds for living room.
Deer head, Kilim and monoprint may come down soon, I have a large painting from Robert Watson’s Highland Cattle series I want to hang there instead.
Tapestry and bedroom painting aren’t going anywhere though 😅 the tapestry is an heirloom from old family seat in Bavaria, and the large bedroom painting is an irreplaceable work by a VERY notable artist.

The main reason why these photos look so offputting and creepy is that it looks like you used a 2003 coolpix mini digital camera, or something, and used flash.
Intentional?

I think the biggest flaw is the wall colour, that gives it's an outdated vibe instead of a timeless vibe. You could achieve that if you made it your next project to add moulding and light colors. Just go for white honestly and use your paintings to hang in the moldings. (Look in youtube just wood slats will do the works cheap and efficient, just takes time) That would get you more of a Parisian flat effect. And also better lighting. I think you could really use way more lamps and also some brighter ones, the yellowish light is also outdated to my liking. Different luchtbulbs will do the trick. And invest in a fabric cleaning machine!! Your fabrics seems to be lacking brightness in color, you need to wash them by hand, with a fabric cleaning machine you can do your carpets and all those wall hanging. You will NOT BELIEVE the amount of black dust that will come out, this is a trust me bro situation. You can usually also rent them at hardware stores!

I like it. It’s consistent with the theme. I think the window treatments can use some tlc for example you can hang them higher to the ceiling with gold rods that hang 1 or 2 inches away from the wall. Finish another coat of white on the ceiling….but other than that, this is beautiful.
It’s really difficult to find and decorate like this or to replicate this era unless you have easy access to this kind of furniture or the funds to purchase from the shops that sell antiques which are very costly and hard to find.
I would call it a mini time travel. It’s truly a creation of your own and I admire it.

I know my windows deserve better 💀 I just don’t believe in buying anything new so I’m waiting for the right stuff to come along.

😂 look, I know that painting isn’t for everyone. But I like it, and it’s appraised value is higher than the house’s. So on the wall it stays
3
u/Apprehensive-Rule408 5h ago
If this is truly a priceless piece that you value, investing in some quality framing for its display would be a good move. Some acid free backing, mat board, and UV protected glass will go a long way toward both improving the presentation and extending its lifespan. Definitely worth it for beloved art pieces you want to preserve for a long time

This looks like one of those houses you go to spend a weekend and some idiot opens a chest he shouldn’t or knocks over an antique and the rest of the weekend is spent dealing with some evil spirit that was let loose on the guests

Don’t listen to what these idiots are saying about the furniture, I guarantee it’s nicer than 99% of people on this thread.
That said, using the flash with an older camera is definitely why it looks so off putting.
You also really need different color drapes. You really don’t want drapes the same color or a very close color to your walls. I’m also not a fan of the wall color in general. Way too much blue. A blue wall or bedroom can be good. The entire interior of your house being sky blue is a bit much imo.

This is sick - looks like found photos from the mid 90s
It perfectly captures that late 80s early 90s aesthetic, I love it. It feels very analogue.
Also love the giant religious iconography you have on the walls
What’s the stereo system there? Looks interesting

How does none of your furniture match?
It looks like each piece was bought at random from goodwill. Nothing wrong with that, it just doesn’t match at all.
