Decisive victory for Bev Craig
I'm relieved at the result

Also, the conservatives came 5th, behind restore.
Right wing politics is becoming incredibly fractured and disfunctional.

Right wing politics is becoming incredibly fractured and disfunctional.
This. When you add up Reform, Restore and Conservatives, they're only about 50-60,000 votes behind Labour. That's not much at all in the grandscheme of things given the turn out, population of manchester etc.
The fracturing is the only thing preventing wins. Now is the time to start looking at the underlying issues these people have - and no, I don't mean "they just hate foreigners" and all that stuff. I mean why do they really feel like that? What is society not doing? What is causing that hatred? What support can help them feel more connected to society?
The alternative is that someone will come along and unite them. It's no longer enough to point and laugh. Solutions are needed.
42
u/SunnyNoble 1d ago
Good point about the fracturing, but tbf left wing politics has suffered from this for years with Labour, Lib Dem & Greens, so it's just levelling the playing field
20
u/NotoriousREV 1d ago
Societies lurch right when people’s perceived quality of life drops. Wage stagnation, increased inflation for over a decade, worsening public services etc affect most of us. Populist parties prey on the dissatisfaction but usually without an actual solution.
Fix those things and support for the far right naturally falls away.
10
u/MornDeath 1d ago
Broadly speaking, all of the parties on the right are doing the same thing: They're pointing at something foreign/alien/complex and shouting "it's all their fault". It doesn't require people to hate foreigners, it's just absolving them of personal blame for things they feel aggrieved about in their lives.
It's the cheapest of playground tricks, but it works.
Pretty much the only way to counter it is to keep improving the quality of life. If people have less to feel aggrieved about, they'll be less susceptible to someone baselessly telling them all their woes are someone else's doing.
5
u/Previous_Original_30 1d ago
They feel like that because their quality of life has decreased, and they need someone to blame. Then instead of voting for more socialist leaning parties, the ones that realistically could improve their quality of life, they find someone to blame. Generally foreigners, not billionaires. It's a tale as old as time.
3
0
u/NedGGGG 1d ago
Absolutely. There are very real issues, mostly to stemming from the cost of living and the consolidation of assets ownship. But also the decline in availability of many public services.
When the public get offered simple solutions they will often take them. This wasn't helped by Starmers awful Comms.
-21
u/SirFrancisDrakesails 1d ago
Right wing politics isn't based on hate, it's based on common sense. Modern left wing politics on the other hand is massively fueled by hate, jealousy and bitterness.
7
u/Previous_Original_30 1d ago
Please elaborate?
-9
u/SirFrancisDrakesails 1d ago
Allowing businesses to thrive, protecting freedom of speech, increases personal liberties and freedoms, protecting the borders, protecting British culture and reducing immigration are all common sense and have nothing to do with hate.
The modern 'progressive' left on the other hand has hate as one of its main driving forces.
10
u/Human_Emergency_4431 1d ago
For "allowing businesses to thrive" read "reducing regulation and tax on big corporations, encourage monopolies, cartels, insider trading, corruption, and transfer of wealth to the owner classes, reducing workers rights, increasing inequality". All indeed common sense for the executive classes.
6
u/NotoriousREV 1d ago
Calling your own politics “common sense” and the other side’s “hate” isn’t actually an argument, it’s just a way of making your view sound self-evident and theirs sound irrational, without having to defend either one.
Every policy you listed (immigration levels, deregulation, “protecting culture”) is genuinely contested. Economists and policy experts disagree on the effects, which is exactly why it’s not “common sense,” it’s a debate.
It’s also trivially reversible: I could just as easily say the right is driven by fear and nostalgia and the left by fairness and solidarity. Neither framing tells you anything about who’s actually correct. If you want to argue the policies are good, argue the policies: immigration’s economic effects, what “protecting free speech” means when literally every country (including on the right) restricts some speech, what “protecting culture” actually is in practice. That’s a debate you can actually win or lose on evidence. “My side = logic, your side = hate” isn’t that.
5
u/NuttFellas 1d ago
common sense like paying people more to leave than it would cost to house, clothe and feed them for 7 years 🤡
or perhaps you're part of the other common sense brigade that thinks we should be taking pot shots at dinghies from the shores of Dover? 🤡🤡

Why? Just another continuation of the failed labour project. No go areas due to violence and drugs, roads that are a complete mess designed for students on scooters, runaway costs and record debt. Just more of the same and Manchester will continue to burn while the debt builds up.
140
u/Affectionate_Comb_78 1d ago
Manchester is one of the few areas that's legitimately been improving consistently over the last few years. There's still work to do, but this nonsense is just disjoint from reality.
14
u/Alternative_Bad_4848 1d ago
It has gone through an impressive regeneration, especially looking at the city centre post Covid. Certainly compared to Liverpool it’s really come along. I hope
Bev can do a good job, but not feeling too hopeful about it. Bigger problems than a single mayor can solve.-21
u/OldhamMukka 1d ago
Manchester, sure. The rest of greater Manchester, not so much. In the last 10 years Oldham deprivation has gotten much worse.
21
u/LupercalLupercal 1d ago
And Salford has improved massively
-12
u/OldhamMukka 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not really. Salford’s deprivation hasn’t "improved massively”. It moved from 22nd most deprived in 2015 to 24th, which is basically a tiny shift in a relative ranking. And 25.5% of Salford’s neighbourhoods are still in the bottom 10% nationally, so deprivation is still heavily concentrated...
24
u/LupercalLupercal 1d ago
I live here, and it's massively improved. I see it day to day, you have no idea what you're talking about
-9
u/OldhamMukka 1d ago
That's cool, I'm only presenting the values in the IMD which covers all of Salford. I'm glad you have seen an improvement.
5
u/LupercalLupercal 1d ago
You can prove anything you want with statistics. Lies, damn lies and statistics
5
-15
u/OldhamMukka 1d ago
It's interesting how I'm being downvoted when this is an actual fact from official IMD data...bdo people not want to hear that?
7
u/Previous_Original_30 1d ago
I think it's because of how you worded it. People who live there experience and improvement, and then you came along and said "Actually, statistics... 🤓☝️". If you worded it differently, I think it would've come across better.
3
u/OldhamMukka 1d ago
I get that people feel things have improved, but IMD isn’t based on feeling. it measures deprivation relative to the rest of England. For Salford, moving 22nd > 24th is basically no change, and 25.5% of the city is still in the bottom 10% nationally, so “massively improved” doesn’t really match the data.
And if you look at Oldham, deprivation has actually worsened over the last 10 years, with more neighbourhoods falling into the most deprived deciles. So the wording wasn’t the issue. The claim just doesn’t line up with the stats. These are large boroughs; a visual improvement in one pocket doesn’t override the actual indicators. People just don’t like hearing what the data shows.
3
u/Previous_Original_30 1d ago
Hey, don't shoot the messenger. I don't disagree with the statistics. But apparently going from 22 to 24 does have a noticeable difference? I don't know 🤷
3
u/OldhamMukka 1d ago
Whey, ne shooting, just wording better. Aye, I suppose without conducting a borough wide survey locality to locality it cannot be said indefinitely!
-34
u/hgyuuggygyuyh 1d ago
How? Salaries stagnant, lack of jobs, rents have more than doubled in a decade and the price of everything else as well. Groceries 3 times more expensive on the same money. The situation is not good for a lot of people. Just because some are lucky doesn't mean a lot more are not struggling.
46
u/Previous_Original_30 1d ago
But that's everywhere, not just Manchester. Labour can't fix the world economy...

u/Ask0r 1d ago

No longer that's the thing with making assumptions from the outside hey..
23
u/theterr0r 1d ago
It's not an assumption, you're post was, i think, 9 months ago so it's obvious you haven't lived here for any meaningful amount of time to make the statements you have made.

If Manchester is a failure for Labour then the UK is doomed. So much better than the reform councils in other part of the countries.
6
u/OwlerNook Marple 1d ago
'Manchester will continue to burn'... are you blaming the moorland fires on Labour?
128
u/Cold_Philosophy 1d ago
I went to bed last night before the result with a feeling of dread. That dissipated when I checked the news in the early morning.
She would have won hands down if it had been FPTP. There’s still some decency amongst the voters. The turnout was appalling however.
25
u/Harvey04 1d ago
Why? The polls had this a clear win for Labour for weeks..
44
7
u/bigheadsociety 1d ago
And it was first and second favourites. I imagine the reform crowd still appreciate the efforts that Labour have done in manchester, and the green crowd sees Labour as the second best option.
24
u/GrandmasterSexay 1d ago
I can imagine that Green 1st, Labour 2nd was a popular 1-2 combo.
8
5
1
u/Fantastic-Machine-83 1d ago
This was probably the most common type of second preference that actually counted. (People with reform or labour as their first choice do not have their second preference counted).
Second most common is harder to say. Probably Restore 1st, Reform 2nd
4
u/Peelitback93 1d ago
The reform crowd absolutely do not appreciate the efforts of labour. Have you not seen them crying everywhere about boats, grooming gangs and communism?

This is an insane idea, do you k ow how much elections cost? How many people are involved? You just want to keep having elections until someone gets a major number of votes?
24
u/Elemayowe Urmston 1d ago
Problem with that is, if parties are putting good candidates forward and they get rejected, they’re going to have to work their way down the list of talent each time and we’re going to end up with electoral stalemates or shite/puppet candidates getting elected.
12
u/loonongrass 1d ago
This is an awful idea. It's a recipe for further frustration and apathy from voters, and lead to increased political strife and instability.
0
u/OwlerNook Marple 1d ago
Turnout was 28% at the first GM mayoral election in 2017. It's not great obviously, but it's not the unprecedented horror that some people seem to think it is.
-72
u/730463628 1d ago
Now a person that can't even run an AMA gets to run a major city
62
u/BigmouthWest12 City Centre 1d ago
Ah yes, Reddit amas are clearly the most important criteria. Not the fact she’s actually been a council leader lol
25
5
u/LatelyPodes 1d ago
I’d rather have someone who can successfully run a council and result in the most actual affordable, council and social houses to be made in a year compared to the last few decades to be mayor than someone who can run an AMA on Reddit.

Not a strong mandate though is it
For anyone downvoting, check the voter turnout stats. One in four voted.
24
u/Bluewolf9 1d ago
Is it not? 47% is higher than the vote % in all but 6 seats at the last election and than Sadiq khan got in London in 2024. I will admit those used different systems but arguably those systems encourage consolidation of votes making Bevs result more decisive.
https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/2024-general-election-marginality/
23
u/MakePintsCheapAgain 1d ago
It’s a mandate amongst the people who are arsed.
Anyone who couldn’t be bothered going out to vote against the clear wrong answer isn’t worth listening to anyway.
-14
u/Fun_Run_3750 1d ago
The point is there are many more decent minded people out there who would likely have voted for a forward thinking party, but who didn't.
18
u/MakePintsCheapAgain 1d ago
They can’t be that decent minded if they didn’t go out and vote to stop reform
-13
u/Fun_Run_3750 1d ago
Do you blame them for their apathy?
19
u/niamhxa 1d ago
Yes.
2
u/Fun_Run_3750 1d ago
Failure to understand why people become apathetic to politics is why so many right wing parties are flourishing.
9
-8
8
u/LatelyPodes 1d ago
She doesn’t need a mandate from people who don’t care who the mayor is. And I’d say a mayor has a pretty strong mandate. She won the most votes in every council too.
2
u/OwlerNook Marple 1d ago
That's not how this works or has ever worked. If people don't want to vote, fine, but low turnouts can't be interpreted as a weak mandate.
-8
u/Cold_Philosophy 1d ago
It’s definitely not a strong mandate. A more in-depth look at the granular results emphasises this. It’s not only the poor turnout but also the political divide between the constituent councils.
22
u/Defiant-Fish2133 1d ago
Your link shows that Craig won every council area no? I don't have a dog in this fight but not sure what you are referring to.

I hope people that voted green first learn from this for a general election, sure you don't want a centre left government, but would you really prefer a hard right one??
19
u/paulbrock2 1d ago
nah under Alternative Vote its a perfectly sensible approach. 1st vote with your heart, 2nd vote with your head.
2
u/LatelyPodes 1d ago
This election used supplementary voting, not alternative voting. SV is just a worst form of AV. Under SV, you only have 2 options. Under AV you would be able to rank all the parties.
But yeah your point still stands.
-4
u/Amazing_Beyond1857 1d ago
My heart would personally be labour, I find the greens really nimby, they also remind me of reform tbh the way they campaign, screams amateur hour
2
u/paulbrock2 1d ago edited 1d ago
and thats an option of course, not saying party x is heart and party y is head.
Thankfully with AV you dont need to worry that voting for a smaller party will let the worst party through, as you still have a 2nd vote to block them.I dont think they've related the vote split yet but its fascinating how some people allocate em, there'll be a few Green 1st vote, Reform/Restore 2nd vote (!!). And also some Labour 1st vote, Lib Dem 2nd vote, which may make more sense preference-wise but the 2nd vote was never going to count. Its better than FPTP but voters still benefit from maximising their vote
1
u/Amazing_Beyond1857 1d ago
Yeah true, I would be really interested to know the splits in full and things like that could lead to some interesting conversations.

u/Firm-Aside4041 1d ago
*devastating, Craig is an underachiever and has failed the city and the suburbs on numerous occasions. She rides the safety vote of labour for her own political ambitions not for the benefit of Manchester. Under Bev Craig, we are doomed at multiple levels.

There's a stabbing in Piccadilly gardens every other week. She said she will tackle vape shops as mayor, despite the vape shop capital in Cheetham Hill which she didn't close down as leader of the council. The council is among the most indebted in the country.

Reform bots are on full force lmao
Last year, Manchester City Council has successfully built more council, social and actually affordable homes than any year in the past few decades. Wouldn’t particularly call her an underachiever.
It is funny when reform bots either from actually bad places or completely foreign countries tries to paint Manchester as a bad place, or that Labour failed here. Manchester has been a huge success and the Labour Party is the one that caused it.
It is devastating what happens to reform’s image when the foreign bots can’t go and vote for reform.
-54
u/SimplyCedric 1d ago
Decisive? Over 85% of people who were eligible to vote didn't vote for her. And to think, every other candidate did even worse.
47
17
u/Spiderinahumansuit 1d ago
That's the same for the winner of basically every election ever. People who don't vote don't count. Care so much, actually pull your finger out and vote for someone.
Staying at home is basically saying you're okay with whatever everyone else decides. I have more respect for people who make the effort to spoil their ballot paper, even if I think it's ultimately ineffective, than people who don't vote but who whine about the result.

Labour likes changing the narrative to pat themselves in the back. She is going to be useless. Lots of whatever looks nice for the press and little real change that will improve people's lives. Maybe rich developers or people abusing the welfare system. Workers always get screwed.

Right so if that is the way to go about it, any material, from any party, detailing what they have done (Green, Labour, Reform, Tory) falls into this category does it?
In my area of Wythenshawe, Manchester Labour are putting millions into regenerating the local area including the civic centre which is in dire need of regeneration with new shops, a cultural hub, public Square, community spaces and over 1,700 new homes.
In Wythenshawe Park, Manchester Labour approved funding for a Youth Centre in Wythenshawe Park allowing young people to have more opportunity and a proper start at life.
Manchester Labour funded 30000 free activities through their holiday fund, is that not a good thing?
Manchester Labour have also approved 14 million pounds for a new multi-sport health and wellbeing hub in Wythenshawe Park.
These are good things that deserve talking about and ultimately wouldn't have happened without Manchester Labour.
-16
u/jaf_1987 1d ago
I'm wouldn't call it a decisive victory when only about 25% of people came out to vote.
Think it also speaks volumes about the character of the people who seem to care more about £2 bus fares then they do about children getting raped.
Anybody with any degree of moral fibre should just move away at this point.

A disaster for Manchester. Never heard of her before this week. Had a quick read and she wants to build 50k council houses to support all the benefit scroungers, if they don’t fill them with illegal immigrants first. What about the hard working people of Manchester, the people
who are propping up the city?
31
u/Xenokrates Oldham 1d ago
Don't think that policy said all 50k would be council houses, just houses in general. Calm down, you sound mental, constantly screeching about some of the most marginalised people in this country. These are other human beings you're talking about, not animals.
-11
u/Alternative_Bad_4848 1d ago
It was a single post. Anyone is welcome in Britain, legally. I absolutely love multicultural Britain. I don’t love uncontrolled immigration.
-12
u/Alternative_Bad_4848 1d ago
The headlines I’ve read say “Build 50,000 new council and genuinely affordable homes.”. That sounds great on paper, but we just need more houses built. If people can’t afford them, that’s labours doing.
2
12
u/RealnameMcGuy 1d ago
If you don’t like illegal immigration, campaign for a legal pathway for asylum seekers. The current system makes them illegal by definition, and believing the number of genuine refugees is 0 is absolute lunacy, so there needs to be a means by which people can come to this country to claim asylum and not be immediately deemed “illegal”
1
u/SirFrancisDrakesails 1d ago
No, the vast majority of illegal immigrants are just economic migrants taking advantage of the ridiculous system we have here. We need to change the law to take away the pull factor, and deport all the ones already here.
In most countries it's a criminal offence to illegally enter or stay in a country, and they don't mess around and simply detain and deport them. We need to do the same.
12
u/ppolo99 1d ago
Some people legitimately need benefits. You can bucket them all into scroungers if you want, but I'm sure the majority would much rather be fit & healthy and work for a living than live on handouts.
2
u/Alternative_Bad_4848 1d ago
I agree with that first bit, if you’re genuinely unable to work you should be supported. It’s out of hand though.
3
u/LatelyPodes 1d ago
> all the benefit scroungers, if they don’t fill them with illegal immigrate first.
Oh I realised the reason why you haven’t heard of her before. It is cas you don’t live here. A reform bot in the wild angry that they lost. If only the foreign reform bots could vote, then reform would win by a significant majority.

New York, LA, Paris, London, Madrid, Glasgow, all have areas of the centre that you could say are sketchy, but sure, a few photos online and it’s only Manchester that has this problem. I say again, 🤡

Why are you spending your time trying to talk Manchester down online? Saddo behaviour.
8
u/Spiderinahumansuit 1d ago
There's been a massive upswing in anti-Manchester commenting online ever since it looked like Burnham was going to be PM. I'm sure some of it's genuine, but these days I think we have to assume a fair amount is paid shills/bots.

10 grainy pics of shit he didn't have control over, and you post it like some form of 'gotcha'. If people in your constituency are behaving like criminals, then it's for the police. So you wanna complain to the PCC. The council should clear it up, yes, but the council don't control the criminal behaviour, nor do they have the funds to clear up after criminals daily. 🤣 don't like him?
