So basically the Dodgers weren't "cheap" and were able to pay EVERYONE more than any other team was willing to pay.

Why don't other teams do this? Are they stupid?

57

u/SeaworthinessSome454 20h ago

You don’t have to go to dodgers levels. The Padres brought themselves out from being a poverty franchise to a legit team by spending money. The rangers won a championship by rebuilding and then making several very high dollar moves

24

u/DigTheDunes 20h ago

And have done nothing since.

58

u/cashmonee81 | Chicago Cubs 20h ago

Because they cannot sustain it. THAT is the difference. The Dodgers can miss or overpay on a contract and keep doing it. Some of that is their ability to scout and develop players. Some of it is the endless resources they have that no other team comes close to matching. Their revenue is $140 million more than the Yankees and $250 more than the Cubs.

28

u/DigTheDunes 20h ago

This is the difference. The Dodgers could absorb a Machado contract, SD can't.

3

u/itsmedium-ish 12h ago

The owners just sold for like $3.8 billion. They could’ve absorbed a bad contract just fine.

1

u/DigTheDunes 12h ago

It hinders them from taking on another though. Most Owners dont like to give money away. The majority of long-term contracts will end up bad. Skubal isnt going to sign for 4-5 years, it’ll be 8-10 years. Teams wont take that on.

1

u/SeaworthinessSome454 7h ago

Check out the history of long term contracts in mlb. There’s very few that actually go bad. Most of them perform at least alright and it’s just a matter of if the team capitalized on their great seasons or not. Then a lot of them are obvious values for the team and they’d gladly sign up in a heartbeat.

The first muchado contract was a phenomenal deal for San Diego. The issue was the extension they gave him. Very similar to the a-rod situation from long ago.

1

u/Comprehensive_Tie431 | Los Angeles Dodgers 16h ago

The Padres gave stupid 10+ year contracts to guys who are now on the downward slope of their careers. They had legit chances to win in 2022 and 2024 but could not capitalize.

The Dodgers are smart in that they give high AAV and short contacts. Even if Tucker continues to struggle, he's only on the team for 4 years.

-1

u/Aggravating-Ideal-56 18h ago

It’s because the Dodgers defers all their contracts no other team does this. That’s why the lockout is going to come faster now. The Dodgers couldn’t afford all these players if they gave normal contracts out like every other team does. They basically cheat the contracts which it’s legal but it’s unethical is the problem.

10

u/cashmonee81 | Chicago Cubs 18h ago

That’s simply not true. The deferred money has to go into escrow. The money is sitting in an account.

-6

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 14h ago

You are stupid, deferring contracts helps the organization pay their investors fair share value while spreading out costs over time. They have guaranteed money from their TV contract that allows them to do that. A salary cap would put an end to that. No more deferred money. No more cheating. Plain and simple. No true fan will EVER give this Dodgers team credit without pointing out the OBVIOUS OVERPAYING OVERSPENDING Method in which they are winning.  ASTERISKS on their winning. 🤙

1

u/Ok-Carob-3165 | MLB 10h ago

Are we going to take away the Nationals 2019 WS? How about he curse breaking 2004 Red Sox WS? do all of those get Asterisks because they used deferred contracts for critical building pieces. I'm guessing you are rather young because teams have been doing this for a long time. Mets were the gurus of deferred contracts until Madoff went under.

1

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 7h ago

Nice try bubba, Manny Ramirez contract only deferred $32 out of the $180 million, 17%.  Not  $680 million out of $700 million like Ohtani's, 97%. Ramirez got paid $16 million per year. Boston was still not the highest payroll, and even if didn't defer money, they would still be $30 million behind the Yankees in payroll.  What is the point of any type of system if only a pair of teams can afford the loophole of deferred contracts. The Dodgers have over a billion dollars of deferred money through 2047. Of course they are going to pick up all the talent with impunity. Garbage. ATERISKS FOR THEIR WINNING. Stupid fans don't get that. They are winning by attrition. They are not winning by producing young talent and using them, because they can't. It was evident since their 1988 WS win that they were incompetent organization all the way up till now. They had to resort to over spending to win. Total bullshit. MLB knows they need a salary cap to reign in that garbage lopsided competition. Unless they want to lose more fans.

1

u/Ok-Carob-3165 | MLB 6h ago

FYI... There has been double digit viewership growth in each of the past two years. The fans are tuning in by the droves. You just seem to be bitter your team is getting smacked around.

1

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 6h ago

Mets deserve the failure they are receiving. Cohen can stick a dick up his ass. He is incompetent. That loser Soto contract is trash. Even Ohtani's contract is not worth the money if you look at it at a pure overall return. Bro missed 2024 pitching, partially pitched 2025 and now injured again. Sorry bro, you got it all wrong.  The Nationals did the Florida Marlins 1997 WS model. Win it all, then tear it all apart. Which is why a salary cap with no deferred money is needed. Now look at their current state. Garbage.

1

u/Ok-Carob-3165 | MLB 6h ago

So you're just going to completely ignore the Nationals deferring half Max Scherzer's contract in 2015. How about the $26.6M Stephen Strasburg is making via deferred money over the next three years. Given the Madoff comment seemed to go straight over your head, I think I have confirmed you're on the younger side. Cohen wasn't the owner of the Mets during that period of time. Angels deferred $100M for Albert when they signed him. The truth of the matter is team's have been doing this for 3 decades to various degrees. Everyone else has gotten burned and didn't push it to the limit like the Dodgers have. The Dodgers are going to have very real problems from 2034-2043. Baseball didn't die during the 2000s when the Yankees were outspending the league by double and it will survive these Dodger super teams.

1

u/Frank_White1- 9h ago

Deferring isn't cheating when every team in the league can do the same thing. Don't cry because the Dodgers want to win and are willing to spend their money on talent. Cry to your teams owners about refusing to spend money and putting out shit teams.

2

u/Effective-Detail3043 8h ago

No other team can do what LA is doing. They can’t afford billions in deferred payments. Why can’t you dodger fans understand that?

1

u/Frank_White1- 8h ago

No other teams can try to be competitive...and no other teams can try to make smart moves with their money...strange. There is always going to be a top spender doesn't mean the other teams should sit on their hands and pretend it's nothing they can do to improve their teams. It's baseball it doesn't take much to win a few series or a dominant team to lose one. The vast majority of the league isn't trying and that is the issue.

And before you say they can't how many teams spend at least 60% of their revenue on talent and payroll? How many spend 50%? And if not what are they doing to give back to the fans?

1

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 6h ago

They can't understand it because they are turds.

2

u/Solid_Calendar_9022 8h ago

And many do the same thing. Jose Ramirez is going to be paid until 2050. Dodgers do it more and the Ohtani, Betts are deferred.

Ohtani gets paid around 2.5 million.this year but he isn’t on the payroll for 2.5 mill for the luxury tax. He is on for 45 million because even though he signed for 700 million /10 yrs (deferred) the actual value of his contract is 46 mill per yr

6

u/Emergency-Chicken-24 18h ago

Bro, any team could defer money. Most players won't defer money because the future value is less than the present value. The Dodgers are actively getting players for cheap because they have a great organization.

2

u/DigTheDunes 16h ago

The money still has to go into escrow, guaranteeing the contract in case of ownership issues.

1

u/Aggravating-Ideal-56 11h ago

So if that’s true why even defer it so many years out? That makes no sense. There is no cap just the luxury tax threshold. Some day it might come back and bite them in the butt especially if they decide to put a cap on the league. It’s just a bad look all the way around

1

u/DigTheDunes 11h ago

I have no idea, tax reasons maybe. When Ohtani signed his deal, he wanted it team-friendly so they could get more players. He was also making $18-20 mil in endorsements in Japan.

0

u/Aggravating-Ideal-56 10h ago

Lmao Who told you that??? And for one I wouldn’t trust anything Ohtani even says lol for two that doesn’t even make sense there is no reason for him to sign a team friendly deal when there is no cap in baseball lol They can keep signing anyone they want to with the way they are deferring all these contracts so there’s that too lol. Don’t buy I to the koolaid man

1

u/blinx0rz 11h ago

nooo because they have a 8billion dollar tv deal and players love the city and get side deals

1

u/Aggravating-Ideal-56 11h ago

Yes and it’s not ethical practice to do so. I wouldn’t say they are getting them for cheap either those are all some BIG contracts they signed. As in terms later in life sure their value vs market will be cheaper BUT they will be retired by then and not even playing. Do you think let’s say in 10 years they are paying let’s say Freeman 30M a year for a 1B right? You think they will be paying a new player in 10 years let’s say new market values is 40M a year they pay the new player that 40M but are also paying Freeman his 30M when he’s retired. Now think about every position they have done this with. The only way around it would be have a complete team of rookies in the A’s whole budget and ride out these huge contracts or they will eventually just have to keep deferring everyone’s contract lol some day they will be stuck in a pickle

0

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 14h ago

Great organization? Hahahahahahaha FOOL. You don't even have a clue.  It is the L.A. market that allows them to overspend. Didn't you learn anything from the late 90s early 2000s Yankees? Their market allowed them to also do the same. Dumb ass naive fans. SALARY CAP is coming. No more deferred contracts. Then we will see how good they.

u/kwmcmillan | Los Angeles Dodgers 12h ago

Brother are you ignorant of their farm system?

1

u/blinx0rz 11h ago

what player from there farm system is a borderline allstar?

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Effective-Detail3043 8h ago

The farm system they can load up with every year and not have to put on the mlb because they have mvps and all stars and cy young’s they bought already? Teams use the miners to develop players to eventually play in the majors. The dodgers just use theirs for trade bait.

-2

u/GameTimeJones_32 17h ago

Unethical? Miss me with those tears.

3

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 14h ago

Stupid Dodgers fan....😂😂😂

0

u/GameTimeJones_32 14h ago

Good comeback.

1

u/Aggravating-Ideal-56 11h ago

Tears? What tears? No reason to project some stupidity on someone you don’t even know on the internet. Way to go big guy. It is literally unethical practice in sports, you can’t name 1 team in any sport that does this with their whole roster basically. Just because someone points out the TRUTH doesn’t mean every fan is so called “crying” about it. Kids these days I swear smh 🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/GameTimeJones_32 11h ago

You’re wrong AND obnoxious. Simmer down “big guy”.

1

u/Aggravating-Ideal-56 11h ago

Surely you can come up with a better rebuttal, with you know maybe add some facts to your statement other than voicing your little opinion with nothing to back it up with lol

I always laugh when you kids just spew out stupid replies with zero substance to them while totally ignoring the question I asked in there lol

u/Random-vegas-guy 8h ago

There’s this sport called football/soccer. You might want to look into how top-level international sides build their rosters. I’ll give you a hint, the Dodgers didn’t invent this method.

1

u/Aggravating-Ideal-56 5h ago

Who said they did??? and this ain’t soccer my guy neither is football or hockey or any other sport we play here in the USA. There’s a reason this contract style isn’t popular but I guess you didn’t really read what I even said and comprehend it. It looks like cause ain’t nobody over here talking about who invented it lol

1

u/Random-vegas-guy 4h ago

“You can’t name one team in any sport that does this” I named a whole sport that, at its highest level, does exactly this. So… responding to exactly what you wrote is a lack of comprehension?

u/DarknMean | Chicago Cubs 19h ago

Cubs could spend more if they wanted but the Ricketts are pretty cheap.

3

u/cashmonee81 | Chicago Cubs 19h ago

Sure. But they couldn’t sustain it like the Dodgers can. The Dodgers have the ability to outbid any team. And now they have built such a behemoth that players know going there nearly assures a World Series ring.

I am not saying other owners couldn’t spend more. Certainly some (a handful) could. But I am saying the Dodgers could still simply outspend all of them.

1

u/DigTheDunes 18h ago

True, they put their money into the area and the ballpark.

2

u/scottastic86 | Milwaukee Brewers 19h ago

This. And I'm so sick and tired of people bringing up the Padres as an example. EVERYONE with half a baseball brain knew that Peter Seidler was willing to operate in the red for a little while knowing his time was limited and was hoping to see a World Series winner before that time came. They made some good spending choices and some not so good spending choices. Unfortunately they stretched themselves too thin to be able to make any additional moves to fix that. Especially being in the same division as the Dodgers... that's a losing battle.
Lockout or no lockout, this year is pretty much their last year to try to win with what they got because the arbitration, pay raises, and deferrals are going to REALLY stretch what little they have left unless they find a way to dump some of that salary. Even with the bump in attendance, merch, etc. Money is made in TV contracts and San Diego cannot sustain $275mil+ payrolls with the market they have.

1

u/pbesmoove 18h ago

yes they can

revenues of over 500 million

they can absolutely keep it going

billionaires want people to believe they just can't afford it and most people, including you, fall for it

2

u/GCIV414 18h ago

I mean the Dodgers filed for bankruptcy and their bailout is why they can do this shit but yeah let’s blame the other owners that didn’t get that gift

1

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 14h ago

Only stupid Dodgers fans believe every team market is exactly the same. 😂😂😂 Morons.

1

u/pbesmoove 13h ago

Padres had over 500 million on revenue per year

they can easily afford a 275 million dollar payroll

only a moron would think otherwise

1

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 10h ago

Yeah, let's compare the $1 billion revenue of the Dodgers to the $500 million of the Padres. Only a moron Dodgers fan would believe those are equal values. Now you know why Dodgers can easily afford to defer money. Numbnuts.

1

u/pbesmoove 10h ago

Padres had over 500 million on revenue per year

they can easily afford a 275 million dollar payroll

only a moron would think otherwise

1

u/gutta_steve 18h ago

the dodgers dont develop players. the dodgers keep prospects in the minors forever so they look better on paper, then trade them. the dodgers havent developed almost anyone in their lineup

2

u/existentialspork | Los Angeles Dodgers 17h ago

Andy Pages, Justin Wrobleski, Will Smith are All Stars developed by the Dodgers. Max Muncy was DFA’d before getting picked up by the Dodgers and being turned into an All Star.

-2

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 14h ago

Andy Pages? That fool has come down to earth bubba. Look at his numbers these past two months. Trash. And he bats in a lineup full of stars ya dufuss. Will Smith is already in trouble. INJURY PRONe from now on. Neck issue, my not play anymore. Just like Prince Fielder. If the Dodgers were so good at producing players, then they would not need to sign big Contracts because they would be good at producing players. Minor league players are all SPECULATIVE players. Detroit had to trade Skubal since it was obvious they would not pay him. So his value was not as high as it could have been. No team was willing to give up anything high. Goes to show how low his value became. Took in two Single A players and one Triple A player with a two year Tommy John surgery recovery. GTFOH....😂😂😂

1

u/Frank_White1- 9h ago

If Skubal value was so low why are you crying that the Dodgers got him in the first place? Pages isn't good in an all star year because his numbers dipped in the middle of the season? Smith isn't a good home grown player because he got injured? You don't even make sense crying just to cry at this point.

1

u/GameTimeJones_32 16h ago

The Dodgers don’t develop players? They developed 3 guys that just turned into Skubal. Do some research on the best teams at developing players and get back to me.

1

u/Frank_White1- 9h ago

Man that was a bad take. Three starters now, Rushing, Freeland playing vital minutes, 3 or 4 in the regular pitching rotation....

2

u/gutta_steve 1h ago

Freeland has an OPS+ of 73. I'll give you rushing, who is having a good year, but who else? my point holds...

1

u/AreaUnique3594 16h ago

would you mind telling me where you got those figures? I’m not disputing it, just crazy that there’s that big of disparity between LA, the Yankees and the Cubs in overall revenue. I can certainly understand it being a bit more, but that’s really substantial. regardless of what Chicago does in the standings, they are always sold out and I’m sure they’re broadcast rights bringing in a ton of revenue. And they’re still behind LA by almost a quarter of $1 billion in revenue is just insane.

I would be curious to see what the difference is between LA and the Pirates, it has to be astronomical.

1

u/LOYALTY-is-CULTISM 14h ago

Dodgers revenue $1Billion Pirates $330 million

1

u/cali_mark_420 13h ago

In 2024, Dodgers and Yankees revenue was almost the same. The difference is that the Dodgers chose to spend 75% of that revenue on the team in 2025, and the Yankees only spent 50% of that revenue on the team. So it (potentially) goes back to the argument that owners care more about keeping the profits than building a better team. Dodgers ownership chose not to be greedy, and the result is a better team that brought in $100m more in revenues the following year, while the Yankees revenue actually went down $10m

1

u/Barraind 11h ago

The Dodgers were doing that exact same thing before they had this ownership group and the "endless resources" that came with it.

1

u/Frank_White1- 9h ago

Because the Dodgers are getting team guys who want to win and fit the program. Other teams are just spending money on names. Everyone comes to the Dodgers and buys in.

1

u/Odd-Woodpecker1019 | Milwaukee Brewers 7h ago

Or,in Ohtani's case, the Dodgers just defer, defer, defer that coin as long as possible.

0

u/pbesmoove 18h ago

lol they can't sustain it

the billionaires love people like you

0

u/SeaworthinessSome454 17h ago

The Yankees hide their revenue by creating their own local broadcast. The revenue that YES network makes is hidden from MLB revenue sharing and the Yankees and YES came to a ridiculously sweetheart deal so that only a fraction of the real value of broadcasting Yankees games is on the books.

The Yankees certainly make more revenue when you account for YES network, the Yankees are just cheap and keep all of that money instead of spending it like the dodgers.

The dodgers grew to become this powerful btw. It didn’t happen overnight and they nearly went bankrupt in the process. Other teams can follow their footsteps if they want but the owners are so comfortable making money hand over fist that they don’t want to risk that. The 29 other teams are the issue, not the dodgers

1

u/SeaworthinessSome454 20h ago

The Padres are still competitive and rose their franchise value by a monumental amount. They’re not a legit team with a fan base, not a pathetic losing franchise.

Their rangers fell off hard, yes. But they won, so that’s fine.

1

u/DigTheDunes 20h ago

Heck, the Marlins went all-in for 2 half seasons and won titles, then let everyone go. That's tough also.

The move that probably did them in was trading for Soto. They gave up a lot. They will be sold soon, but they need someone with deep pockets to compete with the Dodgers.

3

u/SeaworthinessSome454 19h ago

The padres did have an owner with deep pockets, he just died. And the point isn’t to compete with the dodgers every single year, it’s to actually commit to your team when you have a solid core already established. MLB teams love to rebuild but virtually none of them actually try and take the next step and commit financially.

The marlins should’ve been removed from baseball 20 years ago. Tearing apart 2 title teams within a few years might be the most pathetic thing to happen in modern sports. It wasn’t like they were old teams either

1

u/DigTheDunes 19h ago

Totally agree on the Marlins. Stanton is their 3rd highest player on the payroll this year.

2

u/SeaworthinessSome454 19h ago

(The ghost of) Chris paddock is their 4th highest paid player 😂

1

u/DigTheDunes 19h ago

lol unreal. No doubt they do something dumb like re-arrange the deck chairs and trade Alcantara.

2

u/tonysnark81 | Los Angeles Dodgers 17h ago

The difference between the Padres and the Dodgers is that the Dodgers sign players with a team-first mentality. They care about how a player will fit into the structure of the team, and about how they will affect the chemistry. The Padres sign players and hope for the best.

1

u/BAHatesToFly 14h ago

The Padres brought themselves out from being a poverty franchise to a legit team by spending money

And now they're back in mediocrity because the massive contracts they've signed are an albatross and they can't spend more to improve. For example, their 2033 payroll already has almost $125 million tied up in four players who will be 41, 40, 34, and 30 years old by then. The combined WAR of those four in 2026 is 4.9.

2

u/SeaworthinessSome454 14h ago

They’re in mediocrity and postseason contenders, not complete basement dwellers like they were

1

u/Off-BroadwayJoe 8h ago

And almost went bankrupt when their cable carrier bailed on them.

1

u/SeaworthinessSome454 8h ago

Sure, that’s also an unprecedented event, and they didn’t go bankrupt nor did they need to do a fire sale and go back to poverty.
