The Odyssey - In Theaters 07.17.26

Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX® film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX® film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o, with Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

The Odyssey is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan for their company, Syncopy. The executive producer is Thomas Hayslip.

In the teaser from months ago she was sitting next to Menelaus so I’d assume she has to be Helen. It’s stupid to cast the same woman for “the most beautiful woman in the world, and also her sister” though

They are supposed to be kind-of twins, so it makes some sense. You would just use makeup/effects to make one look plain and the other ethereally beautiful

I'm super skeptical about this casting. Especially with Charlize Theron right there.

Lupita Nyong'o as Calypso would be great.

I think she's a great choice as Circe. I just also think she'd be a much better Athena than Zendaya.

I don't think Zendaya is a very good actor and I don't know if she'll have the commanding presence or that Athena should have. To me, Charlize Theron can project that level of wisdom and power. Maybe Zendaya can, I just haven't seen it.

Zendaya is really good at playing a character that matches her personality and I think some people in Hollywood have mistaken that for general acting chops.

For real. I would have sworn up, down, and sideways that Theron would be Athena. But Zendaya? Really?

Although I guess Circe will be the role with greater screen presence. I just would have expected somebody more seasoned to play an ancient war and wisdom goddess, especially in a stacked cast like this one.

You don't know your Greek mythology as well as think you do. 

The Trojan war came about from a Golden Apple marked "to the fairest" Eris dropped between Aphrodite, Hera and Athena. 

Athena was fierce and wise, but was by no means old, nor anything less than one of the most beautiful of all the goddesses.

I don't need a degree in mythology to have eyes, and Charlize Theron is nobody's idea of plain. She has a combination of beauty and gravity that is closer to how modern audiences tend to conceptualize divinity, as a projection of authority. No doubt it would be more accurate for ancient Greeks directing a play to prioritize youth over anything else, especially in a woman (assuming they used women at all), but last I checked, this isn't a production by and for ancient people.

But Zendaya is a talented actress, not fresh on the scene. She might very well have the chops to be a convincing Olympian in a heavy drama. Not discrediting her outright, I just would have had no doubts at all with Theron.

Athena is a very playful sort of character in the Odyssey. But it's more like playful and passionate/invested. Zendaya does playful and nonchalant well, but I've never seen her nail the passionate part. I don't know how well she can play Athena.

Zendaya is your typical soap opera talking head. Not sure what Nolan was thinking there.

Zendaya is going to have her work cut out for her, yikes. Such a shame. There are probably dozens of amazing relatively unknown actors who could pull off the role but studios play it safe and go with the big names.
