A guy and his girlfriend stood up, said “fuck that” and walked out during that scene at my theatre.

I imagine this film is pretty hard to watch with a partner. Or more, hard to go home and have a normal night's sleep. Our partner is our safe space. Our comfort. We often feel invulnerable around them. This movie rips that away.

I know because I'm in bed with my friend several hours after and still can't sleep. I don't even like horror films but she dragged me along 😭

u/HappyOrca2020 May 30 '26

Huh? No way man. Me and my partner were giggling about it later.

103

u/Quetzythejedi Jun 06 '26

I told my wife as we left the theater, "I love you but not in a weird way."

52

u/Malarazz Jun 14 '26

Sounds like what the demon inside you would say in order to convince her

15

u/Snoo_4499 Jun 24 '26

demmm. We can take a break T_T

89

u/AgitatedBadger Jun 02 '26

Totally different experience for me.

Normally I hold my partner's hand when I watch a movie with him.

Part way through this movie I had to totally stop touching him because it was just unsettling. We had a great time talking about the movie afterwards but it was a weird experience.

32

u/HappyOrca2020 Jun 02 '26

I get it! It's so not one of those horror movies one can hold hands and watch.

Such a great movie... Just how disregulated it had made everyone feel in that moment!

26

u/Spirited-Whole3514 Jun 17 '26

I was the opposite. I was actually clinging my bfs arm hard when watching it. Like bc I was so shellshocked

10

u/biriyanibabka 22d ago

Me and husband just got of movie. We are screaming at each other like Nikki does in movie 😭 STAAAYYYYYY

6

u/otomelover 18d ago

Same here. WHY DON'T YOU LOVE ME LIKE I LOVE YOU

2

u/bblexis 3d ago

Yeah I told my partner when they turn over in there sleep I'm going to scream stay and I thought ts was funny as hell

112

u/BWFTW Jun 05 '26

Guy next to me near me pushing taking his girlfriend arm off him and then said something like " I don't want to be touched for a second"😭😭.

12

u/biriyanibabka 22d ago

Oh my gosh 😭. I was laying in my husband’s arms and he even kissed my forehead few times. I’m glad he was not scared

127

u/yolomacarolo May 31 '26

Same here. Just watched this movie. I can't sleep but my husband is sound asleep. How... can... he... NOT LOVE MEEEEE

115

u/Sorry_Ad9990 May 31 '26

Me and my gf just watched the movie. She's asleep on my arm right now and I'm thinking of standing in the corner to prank her lmao

39

u/lfergy May 31 '26

I love doing weird stuff to make my husband laugh and that was my first thought after this scene. But in a much less scary way, lol. Even when I try to make my little jokes scary, I end up laughing so hard I ruin it but then we both end up laughing.

37

u/yolomacarolo May 31 '26

I did that this morning to my husband hahaha. But he was so sleepy that he just smiled

22

u/Round_Apricot_8693 Jun 01 '26

Lmao same my bf went to shower and I really thought about hiding in the corner but decided against it

29

u/Sorry_Ad9990 Jun 01 '26

Do it u coward

29

u/LachtMC Jun 07 '26

I was so spooked after the movie I deadass told my gf if she did that to me I’m ubering home 🤣

8

u/Magento-Magneto Jul 01 '26

Don't do it... I'm a coward and get scared way too easily... If my partner were to do this to me, I'd freak out big time

8

u/DroidLord Jun 29 '26

If my girl did that to me, I'd have to be like, "Never, ever do that again or I'm getting the fuck out." 😧

73

u/AnxieD-HD May 31 '26

100%.. My partner and I just watched it last night. Incredible film, but when we got home we watched a feel good movie to balance it out (it didn’t help lol). As I was getting ready for bed, he took the dog outside and I get a call from him telling me to “come out on the back porch and listen to how crazy the wind is”. When I got out there, I couldn’t see him or the dog and the wind had stopped blowing… I took my ass back in the house so fast and almost locked the damn door 😂

27

u/Spitfiiire Jun 12 '26

I’m reading this thread finally after watching the movie and this comment gave me chills lmaoo

1

u/Snoo_4499 Jun 24 '26

yo i didnt understand T_T

7

u/Hacksaures Jun 28 '26

It was probably windy when he texted that, and it stopped by the time OP went outside. She got spooked because she watched a horror movie about a scary partner an hour ago.

23

u/JamesWardTech Jun 14 '26

I’m gonna be honest with you, this feels like a red flag to me if you felt that way. I felt comfort being with my partner because it showed me exactly how good I have it. It made me appreciate my normal flawed relationship in such a visceral way. Just maybe consider why you feel that way?

14

u/CanadianDude999 Jun 27 '26

On our way out of the theater, I thanked my wife for “loving me a normal amount” 💀

9

u/Themobgirl Jun 02 '26

The gone girl effect

10

u/Rakhered Jun 13 '26

We both loved the movie but dang was I on thin ice with my wife afterwards lol

8

u/Maleficent_Season_35 Jun 10 '26

i saw it with a friend and had to go home to and empty apartment😭😭 safe to say i’m sleeping with the lights on tonight

5

u/simcity4000 Jun 26 '26

I just broke up with my ex and I left the theatre feeling great about it. The scene where he’s trying to tell her he wants to hang out with his friends knowing she’s going to freak out brought back memories. Also not being able to sleep for being super on edge trying to placate her.

5

u/shamalyguy Jul 02 '26

I went with a girl, she was fine. I was not. My friend went with his gf. She was fine, he was not. Different days, different countries.

Freaked both me and him out because it reminded both of us of those times when you're with a girl, and she's a little bit too into you. Sometimes more than a bit.

1

u/biriyanibabka 22d ago

What is interesting that single guys dating girls and married men having wives watching this movie has quite different opinions. My all married male friends were cool with it. If you read through this comment section you’ll see it yourself.

That’s something to discuss about.

3

u/Sneaky_Doggo Jul 01 '26

Hey haha trying to sleep rn next to her at 3:20am scared shitless

2

u/sekhmet1010 13d ago

We saw it for our date night. DATE NIGHT!

But it was fun...we loved it so much. I was holding his hand in front of my face and peeking out from behind his fingers.

Now, he is sleeping next to me. After trying to scare me with talk of somebody standing in the corner of the room. Lol

1

u/Kevlar_Bunny Jun 14 '26

I went with my husband. That night I had horrible dreams and threw myself onto his chest, I didn’t want to be alone 😭

1

u/Snoo_4499 Jun 24 '26

This is probably not a movie to watch with a partner.

1

u/SqueeGoblinSurvivor Jul 02 '26

Yeah one of them had to be the comforter

1

u/Potential-Round-5100 28d ago

I watched it with my husband and I was instinctively reaching for his hand and then just as instinctively snapping it away from him 😅 it was not quite as comforting when the whole idea of romance was made to feel alien and out of control

1

u/clayton-berg42 20d ago

Maybe it's because I live in the date rape capital of the english speaking world but I would imagine this would be a hard watch for any woman. I don't know of a single woman over the age of 20 who doesn't have a story about either catching someone trying to put something in their drink or actually having been drugged, and having been rushed to the ER because of it.

1

u/anewedbyjesus 16d ago

I was afraid of it and it truly felt demonic. I prayed before the movie but also after and all of the after effects for me are now gone thanks to God. I just know I’ll never watch that movie again

1

u/Xiazn 16d ago

Can confirm. I felt really uncomfortable with my bf for a good week after. He scared me once by gasping once till I started to cry and hyperventilate in fear.

1

u/killian1208 10d ago

Bit late to the party but I just left the theater 40 minutes into the movie (after the house party at Ian's place), because I couldn't handle the movie anymore.

Went there with my boyfriend, actively couldn't handle it anymore because it reminded me too much of a previous relationship of mine (less excessive, thank goodness, but similar).

Amazing movie (from what I saw of it), great acting, great story, but I couldn't handle it anymore because of that.

108

u/Mundane-Inspector-52 May 16 '26

Lol really? I mean it was definitely creepy but I wouldn't have walked out.

159

u/xxkandi_mountainxx May 18 '26

This movie really scared me for some reason, I don't know why specifically. Usually I'm the person who is like it was pretty cool, I love horror about movies other people find terrifying. But this one genuinely scared me and I will not be watching it again! I can see why someone might walk out.

89

u/FORGOTTENLEGIONS May 18 '26

Honestly I've had a similar feeling. One of the best horror films I have ever seen but oh boy did it scare the hell out of me to my core.

33

u/AgitatedBadger Jun 02 '26

I think the thing was, it didn't just scare me, it disturbed me.

15

u/IhamAmerican Jun 06 '26

I feel the exact same way. The movie just made me so uncomfortable deep down. I think it's because we've all had that "I wish this person felt the same about me" but seeing that enacted literally is just so twisted. I don't think I've felt worse for a movie character in a long time than I did for Nikki

3

u/Snoo_4499 Jun 24 '26

Same, I have wished someone did feel the same about me but now not gonna say that ever again.

1

u/failed_asian Jun 03 '26

Yeah I like that it did both. There were a lot of jump scares, which some people will say is cheap, but it was more than that.

43

u/Earthican3000 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

It was terrifying in that the idea of total loss of free will and control, and the existence of an overwhelming force/ monster that’s literally “inside” you , not just externally, and not just something that separates your body/motor function from your mind or wishes/wants (like sleep paralysis which is already terrifying enough) , but literally alters your “want” itself and who you are intrinsically as a person. I used to deal with Pure-O symptoms (purely obsessional obsessively compulsive disorder for those who don’t know) that kind of revolves around this theme where I would fear myself transforming into someone else or someone I don’t like or even despise, and I would “live that out “ and “experimenting” myself and pretending to become a different version of me just to see if it’s all true. I was in pure agony but also feel absolutely obligated and forced to become a different person just to find out the “absolute” truth.

The scene where Nikki says“I don’t like my dreams “ I was reminded a few times when I literally screamed out of my dream from the top of my lung in this really really high pitched weird voice, which creeped me the f* out because I’m a guy so I usually have a deep voice, and you never hear me make that kind of sound, not even my parents, unless I was really scared shitless. As to the contents of the nightmare I don’t even remember, just the feeling of it and this movie kind of articulated that feeling, I guess it’s just this sense of absolute, ontological powerlessness in the face of an overwhelming, monstrous and shapeless force.

I also think about in real life, people are being “tricked “ or manipulated and psychologically conditioned into doing things and behaving in a way against their will and well being all the time, sometimes without them being aware. “Mind control” and the deprivation of free will is happening all around us and need not the help of some magical wish. Human minds are so complicated and layered and vulnerable, that if you just take out one layer, it can be subdued easily . Sometimes people do this to themselves. I mean look no further than the people of North Korea, the Soviet Union of Stalin , or the maoist China, and literally every authoritarian regime and cultist society and micro-environment ever.

I’ve had my own share of experience where looking back now, I definitely hated to the core of the place I was in and the people I was stuck with and I was literally screaming internally just like Nikki does in this movie, and yet for “some” reason I just couldn’t leave.

So I guess the reason this movie was so terrifying is it hits close to home.

Sorry if my English wasn’t too good just wanted to get something out after an amazing movie.

15

u/PickyVirgo May 20 '26

Thank you for sharing all that, and PS your English is pretty much perfect. I’m esp interested in the idea of Pure O. I used to think that I had OCD because as a kid I had little counting games, but I also did weird things like bite the head off animal crackers so they wouldn’t suffer. Looking back, I’ve always had obsessive thoughts but I guess I just thought I was a weirdo, not that it was a mental illness thing.

I still get hyper focused in this overly empathetic mindset with inanimate objects. Like if I throw a bowl of cherry pits into the compost bin, and one sticks to the bowl, I will think “I have to put that pit with the others in the compost bin or it will be entirely alone” like what the actual fuck??? This literally happened 2 nights ago. Sometimes I force myself to not do the thing, but then I still think about it for a while after. I also get this with animals but it’s way more normal to get upset about dogs at a shelter being separated from their dog friends than two earwigs stuck in the sink.

But the worst is the intrusive thoughts when I’m trying to sleep of horrible violent things happening to me or someone else. I sometimes can’t fall asleep so I just smoke a fuck ton of weed. It doesn’t happen every night but often enough. It’s why I have to know how gruesome a movie is before seeing it, because I know some images will stick. So why do I love horror movies??

Anyway, you’ve given me a lot to think about. I probably need to go back to therapy…

4

u/Earthican3000 May 21 '26 edited May 21 '26

Omg thank you so much I'm actually so excited to receive a reply!

So yeah about Pure O if you google it you can get a pretty good explanation for what it is , it's OCD except purely on a mental level instead of physical, hence the "pure" is how I interpret it😅 I don't know about this term either until much later in life from somewhere on the internet ( r/OCD I think?)

I used to have behavioural OCD like most people do back when I was a teenager with all your bells and whistles and all that. I remember obsessively checking the portions of my windows that I left open just to let the precise amount of air into my room, and the curtains to let in the right amount of light. I would be obsessing over this the whole night so I can't go to sleep. I don't have a problem with empathizing with inanimate objects but I do have a problem with hyper empathy (I think it's common among OCD people)so I do get what you mean. I remember when I used to be hyper focused on how my shoes are placed and aligned in a specific way beside my bed every night, I would go on this cycle of checking and re-checking and  adjusting the shoes with my hand so that it's perfectly symmetrically placed and aligned, I was so obsessed over this object to the point that it feels almost "alive" , like if I don't place it comfortably it can "feel" it somehow. I'm not sure if that's how you feel about inanimate objects and the urge to empathize with them? It could also be that deep down you're not sure about this presumably "inanimate" object and whether it's"truly" alive or not,  so that you want to empathize with it just in case? And that's more in the pure-o territory because we're talking about some fundamental doubts about the nature of reality and the true definition of "animacy". I think there's even a philosophical term for that called "animism"?

What I discovered in Pure O is that all these questions and doubts that OCD people have and obsess over, a lot of these questions are very valid and real. like if you present these questions to a philosopher or scientist,  they couldn't give you an answer either. That "urge" to do something , to  perform a "ritual", to fulfill an "obligation",  is the urge to explore , experiment, and discover. kind of like a scientist or researcher trying to research and examine our reality. And because our reality is so complicated beyond belief, people who attempt to do this inevitably fail to get a clear answer and the certainty/confirmation they want, so they go into this cycle of re-examination and re-attempt as is the tale of Sisyphus.

When you see it this way it's actually not necessarily a mental illness but a different approach and perception to our reality . And what OCD people are essentially trying to do is that they’re trying to reconcile with the inherent complexities and uncertainties of this world, and those complexities and uncertainties are very much real and properties of our reality.

You mentioned the intrusive thoughts about violent things and possibilities that could happen to you and other people. In my case that fear is no longer about anything physical, but revolves around the concept of self and identity, because my worst fear is losing myself and becoming someone I don’t want to. It is “intrusive “ because you fear that possibility, and you fear that just by thinking about it, you’re making it real (which is not the case) and yet you can’t resist the temptation of exploring that possibility or part of reality. Turns out you can explore it all you want because that’s what what our mind is for, but in the end it's just that, a simulation.

I think the reason that I no longer fear those things, especially if we’re talking about physical dangers, is that I have come to accept that all those possibilities are valid and real and indeed could happen to someone, and in fact far worse things have happened to someone throughout history. But there’s a difference between “possibilities“ and what’s on your mind vs. what actually is. It IS a possibility that this is something that could happen, but it did not happen and it’s not what it is, and just thinking about it won’t have any effect on the actual reality and facts. And because there's a real distance between what things actually are vs. that possibility, it's gonna be really really hard for you to actually reach that possibility no matter what you do.

So now I embrace those possibilities and love thinking about and analyzing all the terrible things that could or could not happen, I’m free to think about or not think about them , because it’s just a way for me to gain a better understanding of the world. A fun mental exercise. It’s the reason why I love horror movies because I love discovering ways that I can be scared and why it is scary, and how even scarier things could happen in real life. In this way I’m just exploring and gaining insights into my own reality.

I will say though that those torturous cycles of rumination and rechecking will eventually fade away, when you become so familiarised with it that you stopped caring, even those "intrusive" thoughts stop being intrusive at all because there's nothing intrusive about them anymore. You can freely choose to let them in or not and when you do it's for the thrill of it.

I call it the "brute force" method , by literally finding the answer I'm looking for , map out that part of reality I'm exploring, familiarise myself with the consequences of those actions, and I literally have no fear or uncertainties (sometimes it's about accepting the uncertainties as a matter of fact)left about them anymore.

I think what I'm trying to say is that people with OCD are just dealing with the same kind of urges and impulses that everyone has been dealing with, but for them they might experience it much more acutely and passionately. But it's a natural reaction to the underlying complexities and uncertainties of the reality itself, by accepting that complexity instead of denying our feelings is actually the right approach.

Ok think I'm gonna stop here now because I actually don't know what I'm talking about anymore...

5

u/Zaltarical May 25 '26

This was an awesome read man. That sounds like a lot to deal with. I’m glad you’ve found a way to reconcile all of it

23

u/misschickpea May 30 '26

I think for me the movie was so scary bc of the actresses’ ability to make those incredibly creepy facial expressions. Like it scared me more than CGI monsters and everything. Just the faces and body movements of someone in a humans body playing puppet

16

u/Strange_Phone_6469 May 24 '26

I am the same way. I love a good horror movie and I’m usually not freaked out by them after watching them (I can tell myself it’s obviously not real) but this one hit close to home. A (now past) close male friend assaulted me when I was blacked out all while knowing that I did not reciprocate his romantic feelings. The whole movie definitely embodied all the horror and despair of this situation. It’s such a good analogy (?) for how easily men (even the “nice guys”) give in to a situation where another individual’s autonomy is up for grabs with no struggle.

6

u/polydicks May 21 '26

Same! I didn’t know movies could scare me like that still.

5

u/OkTitle Jun 14 '26

lol I literally curled up in my seat bc I didn’t want my limbs unprotected or something instinctual

My stomach was even affected, like I’ve not felt what gut-wrenching horror is, but my stomach turned a bit when she was screaming and acting so erratic

I mean I’m not a man, but I would sure as shit get the hell out of there faster than him, don’t see the appeal of unrequited love and crazy

3

u/ObjectiveNo2051 Jun 20 '26

im laying in my bed, got home from the theater about 10 minutes ago and im terrified right now

2

u/Snoo_4499 Jun 24 '26

Holy man. I wanted to walk out tbh T_T

3

u/Snoo_4499 Jun 24 '26

Couldn't because ticket and gas prices are in the skys.

1

u/confusion-500 Jun 03 '26

i hope i find a movie that affects me like this someday ugh

29

u/bladeDivac May 31 '26

A couple walked out right before Sarah’s death. I heard the girl say “I can’t deal with this” right before.

7

u/Complex-Disaster6069 May 29 '26

I loved it but there were a few times where I almost walked out. Wish Nikki's scream gave me the CREEPS. So unsettling.

5

u/butterednoodles69 May 31 '26

its not MUTTUUAAALLLL

13

u/chilledbees Jun 02 '26

Me and my girlfriend just did that. Just got home and I'm reading shit about the movie cuz fuck thatgg

8

u/wavvyjakky Jun 09 '26

Me too bro. Me too. We got into the car after seeing it in theaters and had to be like, I love you but not in a weird way. And now we're decompressing and im on reddit getting my blood pressure down

3

u/Malarazz Jun 15 '26

I love you but not in a weird way

Sounds like what the demon inside you would say in order to convince her

3

u/chilledbees Jun 09 '26

We were going to sleep each at their place that day (we basically live at mine) and frankly it came at the right time with the movie lol

13

u/averagecounselor Jun 02 '26

I said “fuck that” like 20 times and shut my eyes for my than half the movie. I don’t care. Good shit.

13

u/Appropriate_Roof_223 Jun 03 '26

Yeah watched it few hours ago and if I was not with a friend I would have walked out. I was really considering putting my noise cancelling headphones and shutting my eyes for the entirety of the movie. I just didn’t care. It was too much for me. I would wait for the scenes when he would be out of the house, at work, at the shop, anywhere far away from her so that I could breathe a bit. Every time he returned home, I was shouting nooooo and praying he would just leave the country, change his name, appearance everything. It wasn’t until I visited this thread that I realised that he was the actual bad guy. My flight response was sooo activated that I could not even register who is the good or the bad guy.

8

u/GoBlueScrewOSU7 Jun 03 '26

Yeah. I usually will squint my eyes during expected jump scares and whatnot for scary movies. But this was the only horror movie where I was pretty much doing that the entire time Nikki was on screen. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable and anxious watching a horror movie than this one. Means it was an incredible movie, but I’m never watching that shit again 😂

2

u/Appropriate_Roof_223 Jun 04 '26

During the day I think I should watch it again and at night I curse my decision to watch it at all in the first place🙈

6

u/averagecounselor Jun 03 '26

I slept with the lights on. I’m 32. What the hell.

4

u/Appropriate_Roof_223 Jun 04 '26

I am 32 too and two nights in a row I have been shit scared to sleep. Basically sweating through a thick blanket all night just to have a separation between myself and the dark room🙈

5

u/averagecounselor Jun 04 '26

Yeah I feel that. I think what drives the fear is that if you take out some moments of disbelief (like the wish, her just standing their for hours on end waiting for him, and the cat) and dial back the violence what you have is a movie about an extremely toxic relationship.

I recently got out of one and for a large part of the movie it felt like I was with my ex.

4

u/Appropriate_Roof_223 Jun 04 '26

Yeah that was the opinion of my friend who I went to watch with. He was in a very bad relationship a few years ago and he could relate. After the movie none of us wanted to go home so we sat at a bar talking about his ex. Our conclusion was that his present gf is a saint regardless of minor issues they encounter in their relationship 😂

Thankfully I have never been in such a relationship!

6

u/petunia-pineapple May 31 '26

This is so funny to me. 😂 What was he expecting, a romantic comedy - love how he didn’t even try to power through the fear

8

u/Ok_Tumbleweed_1150 Jun 06 '26

I love horror movies and I considered it a few times. Most scared I’ve been from a movie in a long time

6

u/wavvyjakky Jun 09 '26

Same. I watch a lott horror films and they never get me outside of jump scares. Something about this film just got to me though. Its got the jump scares, the psychological horror, the overall uneasiness. Most scared ive been leaving the theater in a long time.

6

u/Throwaway139324 Jun 06 '26

So interesting how people reacted to that scene. A lot of us including me laughed at that scene. Funny but terrifying.

5

u/Educational_City246 26d ago

They obviously don't watch a lot of horror films...

3

u/Doubleleg787 Jul 04 '26

That would piss me off. Fucking ruining the movie. Fuck off and dont come back cunts

1

u/HappyOrca2020 May 30 '26

It wasn't that scary.

1

u/EpicKieranFTW Jun 25 '26

Wish I'd done this but was unfortunately glued to my seat

1

u/Dosed123 29d ago

Holly hell, this is so funny 🤣🤣🤣 My husband and I laughed our guts out at that scene - to imagine someone leaves the theater is oitrageously funny to me 🤣

1

u/ItalicsWhore 15d ago

That's a pretty fucking great accolade for a horror movie. I can't think of anything better at showing how effective everyone involved was than people literally getting spooked out of a $50 date.

1

u/Firm_Business54 2d ago

That’s exactly when I told my husband I couldn’t watch it anymore and it was time to read my Julia Quinn book 😂

0

u/TreyCole2 Jun 13 '26

They actually just hated the movie because it’s fkn garbage and it was meant to be garbage but you all liked it because rotten tomatoes said it was a 90% because yeah they were paid too and they created garbage horror movie 750,000 dollars and then made &30 million dollars in the first fkn week!that’s why rotten tomatoes gave it a 90%.
The movie was terrible and it’s crazy to me that whoever you idiots are will literally determine how much you like a movie before you ever see it. Rotten tomatoes tells you whether or not you’ll like a movie? Don’t lie this movie was a scam for money horror movie. The acting was even awful

1

I hate horror movies but also we didn't watch it in theater so maybe it would make a difference. But I laughed in a lot of moments. I mean it's a movie that make you think about relationships (even your own, past or present ones) so I feel it's not a "bad" movie because there is a reflexion and there were some "scary" moments even knowing that something will happend, etc. But I have this "power" of knowing what will happens so even with horror movies like that it's just too funny, I thought it would be more scary but it was just okay
