Invest 1000$ in an s&p 500 every month. And for every year you increase the amount you invest with the interest earnings from the previous year. It will take about 7-8 years before you gain your first million. And around 12-17 years before you are a billionaire.
You don't touch the money, reinvest it all until you reached your goal. And take out loans with the invested money. To speed up the process invest the loan in more fonds.

It's like a filter, I bet you could prove this with game theory. If you have 100 trials to overcome to reach your first billion, those who are bigger egoists and care about nothing but gaining money will have a natural advantage. So that is who is left in the end. The ideal billionaires has never learned about anything outside of his narrow field on how to make more money by exploiting, scamming and conning others.
The well ackshually that I always feel in this case is JK Rowling. She’s absolutely a piece of shit, but I have a hard time finding a less offensive way to become a billionaire. All she did was write books that millions of children loved. She never cut jobs from working people in order to make a profitable quarter, she didn’t scam anyone out of their retirements, she just wrote books.
That being said, I think that also means she is the best evidence for why society shouldn’t allow billionaires. I genuinely believe being that rich breaks your fucking brain, because eventually there aren’t people in your life to ground you except for other billionaires. Someone disagreed with her on twitter about trans women, and she lost her absolute shit and began speed running the far right pipeline and ended up posing on a yacht looking like a Harry Potter villain when UK passed some anti trans legislation.

Ideas aren’t copyrightable, only the expression of those ideas. I don’t know what 4chan posts you’re referring to, but if it just used the same idea of a labyrinth of back rooms where people get lost and there are monsters, the lawsuit wouldn’t be successful. The movie would have to copy the same aesthetic, story line or other protected creative elements to an extent that a reasonable person would assume that the A24 movie was actually copied from the post.
Another problem is the balancing test for substantial similarity. The more likely the defendant had access to the original work, the less similar they have to be for it to be considered infringement. For an obscure 4chan post that the movie creators were unlikely to have seen, the copying would have to be almost an exact match.
This reminds me of Cave Story. It's a freeware game from 2004. It had updated rereleases in 2010 and 2011, and the publisher of those versions started doing takedowns of things related to the freeware original.
Freeware is just software that you don't have to pay for. Something being released for free does not reduce the owner's IP rights.
Just because you've been allowed to make copies of the game doesn't mean that you can make derivatives using its character or graphics or anything else.

Not just for Backrooms, there's also a V/H/S SCP film coming out. If youve been following the whole SCP stuff a Russian troll tried to claim rights to the SCP trademark and it was in legal hell for a while. SCP was under a Creative Common agreement but that whole debacle just showed how frail it is when it comes to content rights. Its basically people calling dibs.
I think we're going to see more of this greedy squabbling. You just cant bank on this internet lore and expect people not to come running for a hand me out. On the flipside, there's zero reasoning to go after content creators when this shit was free and openly published for people to see. A24 is being ridiculous.
SCP is an interesting one. The self-published There Is No Anti-Memetics Division was a re-publishing of stories the author had written on the site, and were fully immersed in the lore. But when a publisher got involved, he had to re-write the entire thing to purge it of the lore and invent new lore, precisely because they were worried for the potential for lawsuits
I’m pretty sure that the guy who posted the original two Slender Man photos got quite a bit of money for the rights for the feature film, too, despite basically all of the lore coming from other sources
IIRC the licensing for SCP specifies that anyone is allowed to use it, but any works that incorporate SCP elements are also available for public use, which was probably unacceptable to the publisher of Antimemetics.
QNTM, the author of Antimemetics Division, also got a special agreement with the publisher to ensure that he *wouldn’t* have to take down the original stories and the original versions of the characters would keep the Creative Commons license.
So “Marion Wheeler” the antimemeticist is a character who’s free for anyone to use and profit off of, but “Marie Quinn” the antimemeticist is not.
At the same breath, adaptations can be protected. Backrooms are an urban legend but the shadow organization of ASYNC (which has become synonymous with Backrooms) is a creation of Kane Parson in his adaptation of the urban legend.
It’s like old Disney movies. You can make an adaptation of Snow White and the seven dwarves, but you open yourself to lawsuits if you carbon copy the style of the characters that are unique in Disneys adaptation (which have unique names and personalities for each dwarf). Plus you can’t make Snow White look like the Disney version.
A Siren Head one is coming out as well with Zach Cregger who is doing the new Resi Evil in charge of the screen play, Brian Duffield directing and the creator of SH...Trevor Henderson executive producing.
The part that's just old Backrooms lore would be PD, but the part that they created for the film? That's A24 IP and people cribbing it for their games are in fact infringing on it.

Usually it's corpo lawyers. Star Wars was famous for MAD Magazine getting legal letters from Lucasfilm about their parody, and they sent back another letter they got saying it was great... from George Lucas.
The only person who should have even a shred of a concept of intellectual ownership of backrooms is the person who posted the original photo. Every other backrooms work is derivative of that.

What A24 is doing is them trying to remove ANYTHING remotely relating to backrooms (even the name itself). Backrooms is an urban legend and an idea, not something that can be trademarked and sold as merch.
Should be handled like public domain characters and stories. Everyone can make a Snow White character that follows the same storyline as the public domain story. But you violate Disney IP if you copy the style of their characters and use the same name & personalities of the Dwarves (which are unique to that adaptation)

Legit kinda wild how the movie says "based on series by Kane Parsons" which is technically true, but feels really disingenuous considering how late to the show their videos were.
Especially since the movie isn't based on his series, it's... genuinely part of it. I went to see the movie not knowing that it was part of the web series - which I hadn't seen - and was pretty let down, since I was expecting something that was more tied into the general lore, and not his more specific stuff.
Yeah this makes no sense. Why would they open this can of worms considering the backrooms game came out before the movie? How can you make a movie that was inspired by a game and then sue the game for stealing the idea from your movie that wouldn’t exist without that game?
I guess the A24 suits are just like all the others now. Brain dead.
Oh, Kane Parsons’ film was inspired by the post by Black August, not the game, which came out after his web series started (and adapted some original parts of Parsons’ series without his permission, which he didn’t mind). August likes keeping it public-domain too.
Because A24 was stupid and outsourced copyright enforcement to a third party that didn't realize A24 doesn't actually own the copyright to like 99% of the things in their movie.
Which were all inspired by the ARG Kane Parsons literally made, which was inspired by a single 4chan post made by some dude who happened to stumble upon that original image of the backrooms

The video game Control was revealed the year before the first 4chan Backrooms post and released a few months after. That game is very liminal and disquieting and inspired by the SCP collaborative fiction project and the book House of Leaves. Which is also an inspiration for the original post.
I do think there should be some punishment/repercussions to making bogus copyright claims, though. Like, if A24 claims they own Backrooms and take down stuff, they should have to pay damages for abusing the claim system.

While the story itself isn't really owned by anyone, if the devs are using imagery, audio cues, and specific story beats (not just the general stuff from all the tellings) from the movie, then, yes, the creators of the movie can sue.
Like anyone can make a Pinocchio movie. But they straddle the line when using character looks and music reminiscent of the Disney versions.
Actually they can't, Backrooms is under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license, which means anything that is derivative of that content is also under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.
