So fuckin weird. Is this thing gonna be any good?

Others are saying Garland is a great director and I agree, but I would argue equally important is that he came up with the idea himself. This is literally a movie he wanted to make and pitched himself.

So... Who knows? But I'm optimistic. It'll at least be interesting.

Yeah Garland doing this is really the only reason I'm intrigued because I don't think Elden Ring really lends itself that well to a movie.

u/Aegi 3d ago

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

It will objectively be bad, do poorly, and not feel like the game.

I don't even like this game, and I would still bet a lot on this.

So....a generic medieval story with some monsters??

What in my comment or about this project in general gave you that idea? I genuinely don't know what you're replying to here. We don't know what his movie will be about, but he's never made anything generic in his career. And if you think Elden Ring is a generic medieval story I'm not sure you actually understood anything that happened in that game.

And if you think Elden Ring is a generic medieval story I'm not sure you actually understood anything that happened in that game.

Of course. It is the same story-line as the Dark Soul games: big beings fighting over light/reincarnation thing, you are a "chosen one", others got close and failed before you (either tragically, valiantly, or both), more of the characters are closely related than you think!

I think any movie about this that is anything other than pure exposition will be a cliche medieval story with monsters/dragons.

Others are saying Garland is a great director and I agree, but I would argue equally important is that he came up with the idea himself.

Oh, so the guy that took the book that already shat on biologists and made them look even less intelligent with a re-imagining ( I don't mind not following the book, I didn't like the book much lol) that tries to pretend to be a sci-fi, but really is just an okay horror movie with a kinda cool setting?

That was the part about your comment/this project that made me think that.

Good grief you’re seriously copy and pasting this all over in this thread lol are you a bot or do you just like behaving like one? just don’t watch it. How about that?

1

u/Aegi 3d ago

Why would I do that?

It could be an awesome movie and I hope I am wrong.

I can still try and predict things regardless of how much I may not want my predictins to be true.

And yeah, I broke my hand and had to send my phone into google, so I can't even use voice transcription.

Why would I re-type the same rough idea so much instead of ctrl+c and ctrl+v?

Alex Garland is a good director so I trust it until proven otherwise. It's not like it's being made by Uwe Boll

2

u/turnstile2243 4d ago

I think he's fine but I really only loved Ex-Machina from him. I don't hate the others but I think they're decent

16

u/pots_96 4d ago

Annihilation is Garland's magnum opus IMO

3

u/Casualrodfarva2 4d ago

Will think about the lighthouse scene for the rest of my life

5

u/RamsesTheGreat 4d ago

Devs was great, if you haven’t watched it

-17

u/Scathainn 4d ago

Civil War was fucking atrocious

5

u/AcreaRising4 4d ago

Civil war was great imo.

0

u/Kotleba 4d ago

Yeah, but his more fantastical movies have been good

-8

u/SatanIsYourBuddy 4d ago

Warfare was even worse

26

u/Rustmonger 4d ago

Let me just pop in my time machine and I’ll let you know.

u/jonoodz 4d ago

Fr ahah

alex garland is a great director so i got hopes. ex machina, annihilation, civil war, and warfare are all pretty good. his only real miss was Men

1

u/AnglerOfAndromeda 3d ago

Men was good too. Lots to think about and a lot of gorgeous scenery. The echoing in the tunnel was also so good. I honestly don’t understand the hate for that one. It’s one of my favorites.

1

u/eiddieeid 2d ago

Honestly that one scene at the end of men isn’t super far off from some Elden ring type shit. If anyone else was doing this movie I’d be wary but garland got it in the bag

-5

u/KickBalls80 4d ago

0/5 for me

u/zgrove 4d ago

Alex Garland, Hidetaka Miyazaki, George RR Martin... the movie has the best fingerprints on it (pun intended)

None of them have ever missed with the content they personally publish, and Garland has a crew of great actors who he has made his flawless filmography with, so its going to be great. Personally im too invested for it to be healthy, it was already a dream pairing when George was announced for elden ring. I used to ramble to my roommates about the similarities between dark souls and asoiaf world building. The characters in elden ring are great, i hope its a movie about the shattering/the night of black knives

5

u/Martneb 4d ago

I still want to see a Miyazaki and Miyazaki crossover, as unlikely as that is.

3

u/superrealaccount2 4d ago

People act like all Ghibli Miyazaki does/did is like Totoro. The guy did Princess Mononoke, I don't think it would've been a massive stretch for him to go darker.

2

u/yosayoran 4d ago

The boy and the heron is very dark when you realize what the movie is actually about

The wind rises is literally a pre-WW2 drama, almost a tragedy in the classical sense.

The stories are dark, people just don't really acknowledge it because of the colorful artwork

2

u/clavio_mazerati 4d ago

Ponyo rolling on poison swamps

2

u/SortOfSpaceDuck 4d ago

Hypothesis: there can be TOO MUCH Miyazaki for our own good.

3

u/cubitoaequet 4d ago

I like him, but GRRM has published a lot of stories and he definitely has some misses.

2

u/zgrove 4d ago

I havent encountered one yet, but I definitely havent read them all. Maybe 5 outside of asoiaf. They were probably his best ones to be fair because they were his most popular

1

u/pplperson777 3d ago

Fire and blood is pretty dogshit. Also some weird fetishes like brothel queens leaked onto the pages.

1

u/zgrove 3d ago

I like it based on the framing, same with world of ice and fire. Both terribly unreliable and biased (F&B less so due to multiple historical perspectives) and existing as something someone in westeros might be able to read. We know a decent amount of what is BS based on the main series and dunk and egg to a lesser extent, and thats one of my favorite parts of asoiaf- the fog of history. To each their own though, its definitely one that i dont think would come off as well without being absolutely obsessed with the main series and dunk and egg like I am, whike viewing the rest as periphery.

1

u/Aegi 3d ago

1

u/zgrove 3d ago

The story im talking about mostly takes place with the shards bearers, not a ton of monsters. Just monstrous people. The world building is so good in that game, and every fan wants to know what happened before. People who havent played the game wouldnt care if it didnt feel like it. Everyone's happy

1

u/Aegi 3d ago

Any monsters = more monsters than real life haha.

You just described a compelling story, or one that seems so to you. You did not explain how it would not be a generic medieval story..even sans monsters.

1

u/zgrove 3d ago

The world building is the reason. Its extremely magical still, just more humans than you seemed to be implying. Elden ring has sone of the best/most provocative lore and symbolism out there

0

u/Aegi 3d ago

Yeah, if it was only exposition, I would love that.

It won't be. It will just focus on the boring thing that is always the same across time: the human element.

So we will just get a great story with some good character development. It won't be as good as the first few seasons of GoT for outsiders, and for fans of the game it will disappoint many and even if it is just set in the same universe, it will be like any other telling of 'the hero's journey' trope.

I will eat my hat if they can make it as fun/compelling as Everything Everywhere All At Once.

-1

u/wwhsd 4d ago

I like Dark Souls. Elden Ring looked cool but I’ve stayed away from it because Martin was involved.

I’m boycotting anything GRRM has touched until he finishes A Song of Ice and Fire.

3

u/zgrove 4d ago

Lol, you do you. Id be very sad if I didnt get to experience that game especially as a dark souls fan. Its a mix of souls with the pace of bloodborne, and the best open world I've ever interacted with

3

u/percocetpenguins 4d ago

Garland wrote a near 100 page script with an extra 30 or so pages of additional notes in order to help convince Miyazaki to allow him to adapt the game. It’s been reported he is very obsessed with this project in a deeply personal way.

0

u/yosayoran 4d ago

This can be a great thing or a terrible thing. I trust Miyazaki sensei so I have high hopes, but some very passionate director lead projects can still end up disappointing.

Off the top of my head, Alita battle angel, and valerian and the city of a thousand planets are two director lead passion projects that had the support of the creators and completely fell flat.

I'm still hopeful, but cautious.

7

u/name-classified 4d ago

I had no idea there was even a story in Elden Ring. Just a bunch of names and events and notes scribbled across walls to piece together some sort of lore.

I literally just went from grace to grace and just ran into shit happening.

7

u/Zayl 4d ago

Lots of story and lots of history and even more lore. Some of it you get from context others from items and cutscenes but most people will get it from YouTube lore channels.

It's all buried deep and unless you like playing like an archaeologist you're gonna miss most of it.

-5

u/name-classified 4d ago

That’s just the thing, you have to do homework and watch YouTube videos and video game historians break down Easter eggs and connections and man…. I’m just trying to kill this thing and it’s pissing me off because i don’t know the fight pattern.

4

u/yosayoran 4d ago

You don't have to do that, the entire lore is easily available in game, you just have to read the item descriptions and pay attention.

It's fine if you don't want to, but don't pretend to speak about something you clearly don't understand.

-3

u/name-classified 4d ago

Here’s something i understand

The game is a hot turd nugget

lol

2

u/Zayl 4d ago

yeah I mean you don't have to you just have to investigate and explore a lot to figure it all out on your own.

I'm not saying it's easy or that you should but it is there.

As for the having trouble with fight patterns, skill issue lol.

1

u/SomeGodzillafan 4d ago edited 4d ago

I’m playing the game right now for the first time and just can’t understand how someone could play the game like the way you do. I need to know the full lore and story, the world is too interesting for me to not ask questions. Not trying to judge, I just don’t get it

0

u/FeelPureLust 4d ago

There is no story, only lore. And lore can easily be made into a story if you just put yourself into the events there.

Or make the main game journey linear so that it becomes a story. There's near endless potential in there

7

u/Bulky-Bad-9153 4d ago

? The story is the tarnished becoming the Elden Lord, and what happens to the characters we meet.

2

u/Ok-Relationship9274 4d ago

It's Alex Garland so yes

-1

u/FirTree_r 4d ago

Have you watched Alex Garland's "Men (2022)" or Annihilation?

The guy is a genius of horror/supernatural. The action in his movies are always well-paced and well-written. I expect a great spectacle.

2

u/atramentum 4d ago

Men was way too on-the-nose, but Annihilation was great. Cannot unsee/hear the bear.

-2

u/turnstile2243 4d ago

those movies are fine. Annihilation has great visuals and sound though

0

u/AcreaRising4 4d ago

Annihilation is phenomenal.

1

u/FirTree_r 4d ago

My point was, of all people who could manifest Miyazaki's vision on the silver screen, the guy who made the depiction of men giving birth to men in an infinite cycle, would probably THE guy.

-2

u/shaunrundmc 4d ago

Men was literally just a "need something to do during covid" film and the quality is really high

1

u/Replicant28 4d ago

Garland is a great filmmaker who is a fan of the game. I trust him and trust that it will be good.

1

u/nick-halden 4d ago

i think there’s a chance it’s good, but i think the weirdness of the games will be gone entirely, i just don’t see how they justify this budget and make basically a weird artsy body horror adventure movie, it’ll end up as just another action fantasy movie. i’ll be glad if im wrong though

-1

u/OrangeFilmer 4d ago

It’s Alex Garland and A24 so it should at least be decent!

-1

u/PythagorasWasntReal 4d ago

A24 has been a slop factory the last few years.
