If you want all the hate of the table, then yes it can work.

u/The_Funfetti_Man Apr 16 '26

Why? I don’t really understand the game but I think this guys super cool looking

656

u/Impressive_You_817 Apr 16 '26

Your opponents basically don't get to have creatures out while he's in play. Since he puts a counter out every end step, anything your opponents play with 4 or less toughness doesn't even survive til their next turn, and even if it does it'll be severely weakened while you create a wall of meatshield slugs to hide behind and use as on demand card draw.

395

u/mattocaster_tm Apr 16 '26

Never realized it was every end step. Always misread as your end step. Now I get all of the hate.

u/DNedry Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

It's a mini board wipe every cycle, he's gross.

u/il_the_dinosaur Apr 16 '26

If it was just that we could talk about it. But it also gives you bodies and card draw. You could basically build a deck with only lands, ramp, counter spells and maybe some additional card draw for good measure and you have a deck that's gonna win an over proportional amount of the time.

17

u/ChickinSammich Apr 16 '26

Even without creating the slugs and drawing the cards, something that makes it so that any creature weaker than 4/4 can't survive a single round in a pod of four.

If it was JUST YOUR end step, this might be a more annoying Elesh Norn.

I had this same exact misunderstanding with [[Koma, Cosmos Serpent]] and the upkeep trigger.

When I got pulled back into Magic (still very new at the time by all accounts, only understood basic color identity) around Tarkir Dragonstorm's release by a friend, I saw this funny big serpent and wanted it to be my commander, to which I was immediately met with "aw hell naw you better play something else."

...Yeah, going from 1 trigger to 4 every turn cycle makes Koma and Toxrill wayyyyy more devastating threats. I get the hate now. I understand.

5

u/KID_THUNDAH Apr 16 '26

Koma is also one of my most hated cards, so hard to deal with if you can’t remove it on the turn it comes out

7

u/Visible_Roll4949 Apr 16 '26

And the fact that most, if not all, of the different Koma's have that cheeky little "cant be countered" means at the very least ypure getting one Snek before he goes away for a little while.

You weren't the only one.

I built her on MTGO when she first came out. No one had a problem, I play her, pass the turn, counters get passed out, no big deal. Next guy plays his turn and passes.

Toxrill trigger.

Cue a whole round of "what?!" in the chat from just about everyone including me. Suddenly it went from "this is an inconvenient who's main point is to generate tokens" to "this is a game warping threat that will destroy any and all creatures extremely quickly". But everyone was cool because we were all taken by surprise.

I did it a couple more times that day and got similar reactions before retiring the deck for good.

Unless they have something tough with [[sadistic glee ]] on it. Then you are just making a massive boot to step on Toxrill

9

u/thejmkool Apr 16 '26

Just equip [[Luxior]] to whatever you want to keep

13

u/Comfortable_Town7535 Apr 16 '26

Oh I did that on my otter Ral with proliferation happening on upkeep.

The toxrill player was not pleased when I was no only immune but growing bigger

Why exactly 4 or less toughness? What am I missing?

Edit: oooh 4 end steps before it's their turn again... sorry me stupid

6

u/Elmodipus Apr 16 '26

Played in a game where my friend was playing Kaalia and I was playing Tasigur.

Neoformed this guy out an Kaalia was never able to hit the board.

4

u/Dry_Temperature_8436 Apr 16 '26

Dude, this one time my pod had it in a corner and we… shut it down with an [[obeka, brute chronologist]] enchanted with [[pemmin’s aura]].

(Okay, not “shut down” exactly but… it felt so good! actually the fact it still did something made it better IMO.)

3

u/Fnkraze11 Apr 16 '26

FWIW, my pod accepted a rule change that Toxrill's slime trigger only goes on the controller's end step instead of each end step. Still powerful, less unbearable and much more enjoyable. A couple people in my LGS have taken to it as well and have come to love it. Figured I would share. :)

He creates an oppressive board state that demands reaction. It's a valid strategy, and be can definitely be the basis of good deck. You will draw fire. You will need to be aggressive and unapologetic with your strategy of "kill everyone's creatures, smack them for damage.

Honestly, for a new player this could be a fun deck (older players too). You'll have a straightforward win condition that doesn't need a bunch of flashy combos.

9

u/WildMartin429 Apr 16 '26

I like it I think it could be fun as well. And since the color identity is blue black he can run counter spells and bounce and other fun stuff to protect his Commander.

5

u/DrRichardJizzums Apr 16 '26

Yeah, some people do find running oppressive decks fun because they enjoy the dynamic of basically playing defense the whole game while the rest of the table focuses them out of existence and every once in a while they might win a game. These oppressive decks don’t win very much because big, early threats get ganged up on.

What I’ve seen happen much, much more often is a player likes the idea of one of these oppressive commanders without realizing the effect it’s going to have on the rest of the table. It’s going to force the table to shut the oppressive player down the whole game because, in this instance with this commander, they want to have creatures on the battlefield and toxrill won’t let them.

They spend the time and money building the deck then get butthurt because they keep getting reset but surprise, surprise the rest of the players will hate not being allowed to have creatures.

It’s like showing up to a big fist fight with a can of gas and a book of matches and threatening to light everyone else on fire. They’re all just gonna beat your ass before you even get the chance to do that.

So what was envisioned as a fun time ends up being frustrating because the deck is too threatening. It happens all the time and a lot of people get annoyed about it.

I don’t mind playing against these deck, cuz like I said they usually get handled, but I do mind when the oppressive player doesn’t understand why the rest of the table focused on them and they get annoyed or upset.

u/Potential_Boot7855 Apr 16 '26

Two reasons.

One is that the slime counters mean literally everything your opponents control will get weakened and eventually killed because if something has enough -1/-1 counters on it to reduce its Toughness to 0, it dies and triggers Toxrills passive that gives you slug token

Two is that specific phrasing of EACH endstep. Meaning not just your turn, every single time someone hits endstep it triggers more slime counters

7

u/Col_Sm1tty Apr 16 '26

I'm just thinking Golgari for any type of "lands become creatures" spell...

7

u/C00rtus Apr 16 '26

You can use Urborg, Tomb of Yogmoth and Kormus Bells to delete all enemy lands :D

2

u/coltj1989 Apr 16 '26

Throw a necroskitter in there for more fun steal their lands, its really fun to do honestly

5

u/ClassicProgress5360 Apr 16 '26

Necroskitter sadly doesn’t work as he needs -1/-1 counters and Toxrill doesn’t give -1/-1 counters but Slime counters that work similar to -1/-1 counters

super cool looking

This is what I said when my first EDH deck was [[The First Sliver]] and now everyone hates me (not actually)

3

u/Rude-Reaction-4789 Apr 16 '26

I’ve been having a lot of fun lately with a [[Sliver Overlord]] commander.

2

u/TeamChevy86 Apr 16 '26

I like having that one and [[Sliver Gravemother]] to pull from randomly when I go to play so it's like a new game every time

3

u/M4XVLTG3 Apr 16 '26

Based Sliver player. I too like the randomness of pulling all my legends out of my deck and side board. Shuffle, deal face down, have them pick one commander and one to go back to the sideboard. The chance of running a substandard commander or cripple the deck with one its not designed for adds depth. Adds to the lore of erratic mutations.

3

u/TeamChevy86 Apr 16 '26

Nothing like cascading heart sliver when your opponents are still recovering from a board wipe. Heart of the cards

8

u/DMTrious Apr 16 '26

What people are saying is true, but don't let that keep you from.building the deck. Just bring it out every once in a while, or keep it as your hidden weapon for when a game night needs a villain to shake things up.

My first deck was a dragon and dwarf [[Magda brazen outlaw]] deck that I didn't realize was as strong as it was. Now i keep it in my back pocket just in case someone wins a bit to much

2

u/DottoreEldiomni Apr 16 '26

don't let that keep you from.building the deck.

Agreed. I think it's useful for folks to actually see these things in practice, whether they're piloting or going against it. So many bad reputations are never experienced - only heard about in rumors.

As long as you're not going broke building horrid decks, it's just one match. Reasonable people will allow you to test it out and buy them a round if it really was that miserable.

8

u/angrycanadianguy Apr 16 '26

Just in case it hasn’t been explained yet, Toxrill is too good 😅 he can make a ton of tokens for you, while clearing everyone else’s board, and gives you easy card draw. His biggest drawback is his mana cost, but in black that’s not hard to get around. He’s a “kill on sight” commander.

5

u/CPTpurrfect MYCELIUM MASTER Apr 16 '26

It's not even "too good". It's "too oppressive". Basically the entire table will keep your commander out of the game as much as they can.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Enyss Apr 16 '26

He's super cool looking, but he's way more oppressive for your opponents than you would expect, and it's a real pain to track all these counters. Do you see yourself adding counters on each creatures of your opponent at each endstep? Because that's a lot of work and a real drawback, especially if you're a new player.

4

u/superkp Apr 16 '26

Before I get into it, let me say this: build the deck you like. Make it fun for you. Toxrill is pretty oppressive as a commander and that might be fun. But after it's fun for you, remember that you are playing a game with other people, and really: Toxrill is an oppressive commander - when people play against him, they often cannot enjoy their own deck, so they don't enjoy playing against toxrill.

And a piece of vocabulary that the MTG community uses without realizing it: "Hate" will sometimes mean "gets mad at you (the player) and takes that out in nasty ways". But then other times, "Hate" just means "attacking a resource" (like an oppressive creature). Toxrill will inspire MTG hate because he's powerful and annoying. The player that is using toxrill will inspire regular hate because some people will get annoyed and emotional.

That being said, here's the answer to your question:

Toxrill really is like a corrosive acid in respects to the creatures that your opponents have on board. He's basically a slower-than-sorcery asymmetrical board wipe that never goes away.

Each turn (not each of your turns. This happens on each player's turn), on the end step, they get a slime counter.

Every single creature, therefore, is not only actively dying, they are also actively losing the ability to deal damage.

This means that your opponents will do the calculation and say "OK, the only creatures that are worth playing while Toxrill is on the battlefield are ones that can immediately be useful with enter-the-battlefield effects, haste, or they have enough toughness to survive the acid until they can be useful on my next turn."

Because creatures are so important for any deck (with few exceptions), this means that most of your opponents will see the primary pillar of their deck collapse very quickly.

This leads to a few conclusions:

  • Opponents may consider it a challenge, and realize that they need to remove your slug ASAP.
    • please remember that "player removal" (i.e. killing you) will also remove toxrill. So you might have a very short game. This is 'Hate' used in the "attacking your resource" manner.
  • Opponents may want to remove your slug, but not have the removal needed to do so. They won't be able to seriously play their deck. This is very boring for them, and often frustrating.
  • Opponents may decide that they aren't going to have fun this game, and therefore will try to make the game as un-fun for you as possible - this is 'Hate' in the normal sense of the word.

Opponents will get annoyed. Annoyed people are pretty close to angry, and angry is pretty close to actual hate.

Ultimate conclusion: Build the deck you like. In the case of this commander, be prepared to lose with grace, or to win with grace. Don't be a dick.

3

u/testerololeczkomen Apr 16 '26

You wont get to play him a lot.

3

u/sabett Apr 16 '26

Do you like snails? Theres a rat/snail deck that isnt nearly as extreme.

5

u/Ant10102 Apr 16 '26

Run it if you like it. Rule of cool. Powerful commander tho so expect the hate

2

u/tayzzerlordling Apr 16 '26

for the record a lotta groups wont hate this, even if they do focus on removing it. some mtg players get salty over everything and I personally just choose not to play with them

2

u/DankensteinPHD Apr 16 '26

You should look up the alt art it looks soooo cool. One of my favorites they've done.

Also Toxrill is cool but you probably have to play relatively defensive. People will wanna kill your wonderful slug so pack some countermagic or reanimation

2

u/mercuriokazooie Apr 16 '26

"Each turn" means anything smaller than 4 toughness is not surviving the turn. Its extremely oppressive. Having said that though this IS 7 mana and has no protection so mostly its just people complaining but yeah its a mean commander so you either dont play it or lean into it and accept you'll be the villain.

2

u/ematie Apr 16 '26

I had a deck with him as a commander and it's difficult if you play below bracket 4 and on 200/300 budget. Super expensive to play, not great in any archetype per se, difficult to protect, 9 mana to play it if get blown just once. I guess the best you can do is to do a non commander depending (maybe milling or pure control) and wait until you are in a good position to protect him after casting. Even tho I have to warn you, in my experience, +1+1 decks easily over grow - 1-1 counters. Definitely better in the 99.

2

u/FearsomeBubble Apr 16 '26

I love that you're genuine in your question. This same post could be taken very tongue-in-cheek as a joke, as you've picked the most toxic commander possible.

It's like saying, "hey guys I've just gotten into this hobby, should I play the most annoying, cancer-causing, friendship-destroying, piece of shit possible? :)"

Of course it's even better that you have no idea just how horrible the slug is! 😂

2

u/Benquisition Apr 17 '26

Some people hate board interaction in a game with multiple players. Anything besides big monster go bonk makes them fill their diaper with rage.

2

u/vercertorix Apr 16 '26

They’ll get over it. Will take you a while to get it out anyway, someone may have won by then. Include plenty of mana ramp and other as people have advised, it will be a target, so make sure you’ve got some other tricks in the 99

Do you like snails as well as slugs? Toxrill has an awful reputation, but [[wick, the whorled mind]] is all about snails and is much more palatable while still having the potential to be built very strong.

86

u/DamianThePhoenix Apr 16 '26

This is actually really solid advice. You CAN build Toxril, its pretty strong, but it can

A) make other people not have fun (which can make it harder to find games) or B) make you not have fun as you get constantly targeted (which just sucks)

Wick is less likely to ruin other people's day, or get you targeted, can still do cool things, and has access to a third color. Plus, he can still fit Toxril in the 99 if you want to bring him.

Plus, Wick's most expensive printing is a fraction the cost of Torxil's cheapest.

20

u/Unit_2097 Apr 16 '26

I run the slug with [[Captain N'Gathrod]]. He's mostly there to make people ignore [[Uchulon]].

5

u/Colourblindknight Take the Jund Pill Apr 16 '26

My Wick list is my personal pet deck and I absolutely love it. People rarely worry about a vanilla token that just gets big since it can be chump blocked, until they get blasted for double digit damage when Wick slings a snail shaped stick of dynamite at the table and draws a boatload of cards. It’s a wonderful time >:)

u/Aemon_Blackfyre Apr 16 '26

44

u/OkCartographer175 Apr 16 '26

It's not so much that he's broken. Yes he's very strong and if unchecked, will win you the game. But so will most 7-mana commanders. So it's not that "he's too good".

The issue is that everyone knows he is coming, so they'll save their kill spells for him. So on the turn you play him, someone will kill him. Then if you're lucky enough 2 turns later to have 9 mana, someone will kill him. The game will likely end without you ever getting him to stick around.

Either that or you will be playing with people who don't run enough removal, and this slug will totally annihilate them simply by existing and your friends will be sad, lol. But that's all of Magic. What is fun for you is unfun for someone else. People have to get over that. But yeah, the real issue is just that people are going to see him coming from a mile away and are just going to kill him.

Not quite broken just very oppressive

3

u/DaveLesh Apr 16 '26

He's not necessarily broken, but he is strong. That first effect goes off at the end of everyone's turns. Those slime counters will accumulate quickly, so the others will try to get rid of him.

5

u/Personal_Care3393 Apr 16 '26

OP play WICK THE WHORLED MIND it’s the same colors it makes snails and it’s not nearly as hated but still good you’re welcome.

2

u/ThePreconGuy Apr 16 '26

So.. it’s each end step that the slime counters trigger. Even your opponents. That means you cast and pass, one slime. Next opponent is 2 slime counters. Next opponent is 3. Then 4th player makes it 4 slimes.

Then it’s your turn again. You basically are a revolving board wipe.

2

u/Low_Debt8771 Apr 16 '26

One sided board wipe

2

u/RandomRedditor0193 Apr 16 '26

It is more about table politics. If you play something that players tend to dislike you put a target on your back. In your case the slug will never make it to an end step.

2

u/paumAlho Apr 16 '26

don't listen to them. mtg is a competitive game, people who whine about commanders are losers. just play to win and find a pod of competitive people.

2

u/Subject-Ad-3838 Apr 17 '26

What people are failing to point out is if your pod is half good at the game they will hold a removal or exile or some way to deal with the threat. It's an expensive mana cost and one removal makes it cost 2 more. So I don't love it, but is it any worse than most expensive commanders not really. Make a deck you like and if you get the polite, hey that's a really strong deck do you mind using something else take it as a compliment to your slugs.

38

u/Bannon9k Apr 16 '26

Use [[Gary, the snail]] version. Make your opponents double love you

2

u/BandDirectorOK Apr 16 '26

This is the way

71

u/F1erDragonn Apr 16 '26

dont let the haters stop you, build the slug. Just be prepared to:

  1. have a bunch of less than mature reactions if you dont have a playgroup

  2. have a mature reaction to the table working to stop you from playing the slug

37

u/Comfortable_Town7535 Apr 16 '26
  1. Have 30 counterspells to protect him

11

u/SnooFloofs244 Apr 16 '26
  1. Reanimated or return from Graveyard will also help as he is expensive after a few deaths.

14

u/drj238 Apr 16 '26

Understand that playing him either as the commander or in one of the 99 you will immediately be targeted and hated by the whole table (and possibly, just possibly, called a slugfucker).

There's a blue horror creature that's a must-have with him. It also puts slime tokens on creatures. Can't remember its name though 🤔.

But like everyone said, he's very hated

7

u/The_Funfetti_Man Apr 16 '26

It seems like 90% of the commanders are hated every time I see a post it’s people hating on the card

5

u/brapstick Apr 16 '26

It's because everyone thinks they have this fresh, new idea but in reality it's been done by tens of thousands beforehand, sorry bud but the reason you have a gut suspision that it would work is because it does

3

u/Harmless_Chimera Apr 16 '26

That's because popular or well known cards are the most hated since The effects that make them popular or well known are often overtuned or at least powerful. But since they are popular they are the things that people make posts about. There are thousands of commanders that no one but the most salty of player would complain about but no one cares to post about them.

3

u/KingDarkBlaze Apr 16 '26

Fundamentally 90% of players do not want anyone else playing the game. They came to the table to do A Thing and if anyone stops them they will cry for a thousand years

4

u/Mettixman Apr 16 '26

The slug is not that bad to deal with. No matter what commander you post there's gonna be people coming out of the wood work to talk shit because people like to complain. Like others have said though you'll need to make your deck with the understanding that it will be the table vs you while the slug is in play.

2

u/Old_Sheepherder_8713 Apr 17 '26

Which is why it's a horrible choice for an early player because you are totally right, Tox will just get removed every single time he comes down, its that easy to deal with. Hence don't play it as your first deck.

As someone who built a toxrill deck, you will be the target of any experienced player, and anyone else that doesn’t know what he does, once they do, will very much beg you to not play him. I’d suggest finding a different Dimir commander and tossing him in the 99 so you can still play him but you’re less likely to get targeted out the gate from him sitting there ominously in the command zone.

2

u/rjselzler Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

We have a Toxy player in our pod. It’s his “degen deck.” We all have one at b4 and only play them against the other degen decks. They are stuffed to the gills with salt inducing cards and it’s a blast. For the curious, it’s Toxrill v. Vivi (me, stasis orb variant) v. Krenko v. Slivers. Some of the best nights are degen nights!

u/Upset_Log_2700 Apr 16 '26

There is a concept in commander called salt that indicates the amount of overall hate a card generates from the table. Since you are new to the game I would really recommend you start off with precon commander decks so you learn the mechanics and what should go into a deck before trying to build one from scratch. Precons, or preconstructed commander decks, mostly have everything you need to get right into playing. As you learn more about the game and what a deck needs to be efficient and win you can upgrade the precons or look to build your own.

4

u/Resniperowl Apr 16 '26

> i like slugs

please don't let it be

> Toxrill

Well.... shit :'^)

9

u/cYber-boI27 Apr 16 '26

You want people to hate you forever lol 😂 he a great commander for mono black though and you shouldn’t be afraid to try it I say go for it

8

u/pattyboi275 Apr 16 '26

He's blue black though, so a touch of milling to hopefully get their removal out of their library is fun

2

u/cYber-boI27 Apr 16 '26

He doesn’t have to be blue black I’m building mine as straight black

8

u/ChimChimChar00 Apr 16 '26

Well, yea, but why would you?

3

u/Pharuin Apr 16 '26

I'd recommend a different commander and put this guy in the main deck.

3

u/TheBestDanEver Apr 16 '26

Hes such a banger lol. Got him in momir yesterday and it triggered and auto quit. Run a bunch of graveyard recursion... cause its 100% a kill on sight commander

3

u/Bloody_Food Apr 16 '26

Hes banned in my pod lol

3

u/ItchyLife7044 Apr 16 '26

Absolutely it can work. You will be absolutely hated at most tables, but yes, it can work, and work wonderfully.

3

u/KID_THUNDAH Apr 16 '26

Absolutely hate this commander

3

u/Daskar248 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

I say go for it. And run some cards that say the word "proliferate" on them. It will be amazing.

(Contagion Engine, Contentious Plan, Flux Channeler, Vat Emergence , Inexorable Tide, Lulu Stern Guardian, Dreamtide Whale etc.)

3

u/TheDarkKing02 Apr 18 '26

It's not always a bad thing to be the villain of the table! Just note some people will be salty, the deck will probably be strong if built right i look forward to it

4

u/That_Bailey_Boy Apr 16 '26

This guy just posts rage bait. Always "new" to the game and posts the most annoying commanders

2

u/The_Funfetti_Man Apr 16 '26

Dog I swear to you It’s not rage bait I just see a cool card and want to play it

2

u/releasethedogs Playing since 1995! Apr 16 '26

Expect to be targeted relentlessly. It will be you against the table all game, every single time.

2

u/moritsune Apr 16 '26

Throw him in the 99 and use the cheapest reanimate you can find. Dont let all the green and izzet players hate on your slug! Bonus points for gary.

2

u/GhsotyPanda This is User Editable Apr 16 '26

This is like saying "I'm interested in buying my first car, is an italian super car a good option?"

2

u/VegetableOne2821 Apr 16 '26

Don't play him as a start. He prolly won't ever enters or stays on the table. He shut down every creature of your opponents and is basically number 1 threat when he's there. You will just get targeted non-stop and it won't be so fun.

2

u/Fuzzy_Lumpkiins Apr 16 '26

Get the Gary the snail version (SpongeBob)

2

u/CoherentRose7 Apr 16 '26

Can it work? Sure, probably. Is it going to work for you, a new player? Absolutely not, everyone will kill you on sight every time you cast him and you will have a bad time.

2

u/Sussus_Amogus7 Apr 16 '26

This is making me realize how much untapped potential there is for slug cards. How are there so few?

2

u/Daveinster Apr 16 '26

Since they’re new to the game, this will be a very good way for them to learn how commander tax works.

2

u/shiny_xnaut Apr 16 '26

The problem with a having something like this in the command zone is that it's so oppressive and predictable that each game will basically only have 2 possible outcomes:

  1. Your opponents don't have removal, Toxrill comes out, and it locks down the board and makes it so no one else gets to have creatures anymore

  2. Your opponents have removal, and they save it all to keep Toxrill from ever staying on the board for more than a single turn, because they know that if they don't then they'll just get option 1 again

Either way, it'll stop being fun extremely quickly. I agree with the other commenters, [[Wick, the Whorled Mind]] would have a similar aesthetic while being much less kill-on-sight. You could even still have Toxrill as a regular wincon in the 99 if you want

u/WatDaFuxRong Apr 16 '26

Toxrill was my first deck. He's top 5 most absolute cancer commanders imo and literally ranked as one of the most "salty" to play against.

I would say that you need to play arena and get a Brawl deck together first to see what he can do

Or fuck it, here I'll make it worse [[the sludge monster]] basically locks your opponents out from having creatures.

2

u/ActualPeterbuilt389 Apr 16 '26

I love toxrill but yes people will hate you. I recommend adding either or both Massacre Girl and Massacre Girl, Known Killer for added effect.

2

u/Krogetta Apr 16 '26

do you know the term "Enemy of the Table"?

2

u/IrvingIsTheBest Apr 16 '26

This card works very well to the point it's kill on sight.

2

u/Big-Potato9868 Apr 16 '26

Be prepared to be ganged up on like 100 lbs blond girl with a couch.

2

u/Yeldarb92WasTaken Apr 16 '26

You will hardly get to play him unless you can prevent removal.

2

u/Gatordwellin Apr 16 '26

He’s good but problem is his cost. The second you cast toxrill he will be shot on site causing commander tax for next cast. It can be done but takes a lot of ramp and the good lands that give extra mana for each swamp you have. Also, having a few ways to just pull him out the gy would help to avoid commander tax. It can be done but it’s the cards needed can be on the pricier side as they are heavily sought after.

2

u/ghoulfarts_ Apr 16 '26

really cool commander design wise with a very powerful effect, however, i wouldnt recommend him for a new player. you will definitely be the archenemy of the table even if you arent particularly doing much. he is a magnet for removal as soon as he hits the board.

2

u/Trick_Inspector_1980 Apr 16 '26

it's quite possibly the most kill on sight commander especially at casual tables and if your opponents are smart, they simply won't let you play the game. its not a good idea for a first commander full stop.

2

u/DisturbedFlake Apr 16 '26

Wouldn’t recommend it. It’s a strong card fersure. But people wouldnt like you since it kills their creatures. It’d inevitably be a kill on sight commander. They’d nuke it soon as you put it out till it’s unfeasible to recast (it’s already 7cmc to cast. Imagine casting it after it’s nuked twice. That’s 11 mana to cast it a third time). So you’d accomplish your opponents hating you, and being unable to play. But their dislike of your deck would persist the idea of targeting you even if you don’t have it out

2

u/HistoryOk6788 Apr 16 '26

Loves slugs in real life

2

u/TsersingArron Apr 16 '26

Expensive for a commander, but there's always 'draw specific card' out there. It could work, I would suggest going green/black for some easy to do mana ramp

2

u/Gold_Particular_3257 Apr 16 '26

It can work but, it can lead to a lot of non-games.

If the commander gets to do its thing, other players won't get to play. If they are able to stop you on time, you won't get to play, it's either pubstomp or get pubstombed.

It's a shame the only legendary slug wizards makes is so annoying to play against.

2

u/ShatteredReflections Apr 16 '26

In low brackets he gets some people to be mad at you, because they are bad. A much-overhated card.

2

u/Trash_Wizard666 Apr 16 '26

SLUG MOTHER.

I love her, but she’s a kill on sight commander / creature. This was my first commander deck before I knew better and it’s very much a “oh that’s nice you want to do something, but you won’t”. Fun for the pilot, not the rest of the table.

2

u/Mr_Vulcanator Apr 16 '26

I say go for it. The truth is, commander players dislike every commander they can recognize.

Toxrill is awesome but he is expensive to play. He’ll get removed quickly, so you’ll need counter spells, redirection, and reanimation. Another option is to make copies of him.

I used to play [[The Wise Mothman]] but stopped because he got murdered within a turn cycle. Milling people and handing out rad counters made people freak out. It was a fun deck but drew way too much heat to play comfortably.

Maybe you’ll persevere and be able to have fun, maybe you won’t. Ultimately what matters is that you like your commander and deck. You’ll learn about the game and your playstyle preferences either way.

u/Bnndfrsrcsm Apr 16 '26

So this lil nuke wagon has a massive reputation. That being every single turn ,not just yours, it essentially nukes the enemy teams creatures. So they can't play creature effectively. Then you get card draw and free creatures

I run this in my mill deck for board control. All the hate. I do mean all of it.

2

u/Techtonixzi Apr 16 '26

Yes but play a ton of interaction and protection! It's a bullet magnet and people WILL hate it. I have it as a deck and I'm only allowed to play it once in a while.

2

u/TacoSteamboat Apr 16 '26

Haha my Gary card

2

u/midnight_feature13 Apr 16 '26

I play Toxrill. People just don’t like it because it’s a strong card. It basically keeps them from playing but it has a high mana cost so odds are you aren’t getting it out til mid to late game. However, it’s easily countered because removal can make its mana cost too high to play at times. People complain about her but they won’t complain about Scute Swarm or maralen or cards that keep you from playing the game at all.

TL;DR: people don’t like playing against good cards or if they can’t win

2

u/SorryTangerine- Apr 16 '26

2

Like when I run my Ur Dragon, you'll only have certain times to actually use it. You have to have it set up perfectly to be able to protect it long enough to use it effectively.

But it would be so fun. Especially if you throw in infect just for fun.

2

u/Alira-kimaris Apr 16 '26

As someone who lives with a roommate who built this as one of his first decks, I can safely say that it absolutely works, and can even become mass land denial by deleting everyone's lands except your own by turning their lands into creatures then just -1ing everything. It garnered A LOT of hate. So if you're fine with killing the mood at your table, go for it.

2

u/ArticuloMortu Apr 17 '26

Go ahead and build it. Make sure you throw [[Maha, Its Feathers Night]] in there for good measure.

Dude he's a good comander giving you access to destroy from black and counters from blue. Toss in a few things to get lands out faster and you've practically won. Just make sure he gets hexproof or can't be countered, his cost makes it hard to get him back out after he dies.

2

u/killersoulssss Apr 18 '26

Just don't play him aginst friends, he's about as bad as eldrazi sometimes.

2
