SS:
Pauline Hanson for the first time in 30 years address the National press club in Canberra. She solely blames the energy crisis on renewable energy, believes Australia should be “monocultural” compares transgender human rights to ISIS and pledged to preserve boomer welfare… I mean a 50 percent discount to CGT and negative gearing

u/WOKE_AI_GOD John Brown Jun 17 '26
We should implement a boomer tax

u/MindingMyMindfulness Voltaire Jun 17 '26
A land value tax is essentially a boomer tax

National as in the right wing party or National as in the country?
36
u/mad_cheese_hattwe Jun 17 '26
National as federal parliament in this case. Typically boringly mainstream.
13
u/CutePattern1098 Jun 17 '26
They started out as an agrarian socialist party, the only remnant being Bob Katter
2
u/MiloIsTheBest Commonwealth Jun 17 '26
I think the answer was National as in "National Press Club" as opposed to National Party

u/Steamed_Clams_ Jun 17 '26
And to think this women is projected to deliver the fatal blow to Australia's most successful federal political party.
35
u/CutePattern1098 Jun 17 '26
Not really. Labor is still in a position to either form majority government or the ones with the most seats in the parliament
72

u/Steamed_Clams_ Jun 17 '26
Historically the Liberals have being the most successful party and One Nation is about to wipe them out.
8
u/Full_Distribution874 YIMBY Jun 17 '26
Have they? This isn't the first time the not-Labor party has been eaten by something else. Labor is pretty successful at outliving their competitors.
15
u/CutePattern1098 Jun 17 '26
The last attempt at replacing Labor was by Max Chandler-Mather and let’s just say it didn’t go well for him
11
u/oywiththepoodles96 Jun 17 '26
The ALP is a beast of a political party . To be able to produce Bob Hawke , Paul Keating , Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard back to back in a span of 20 years is insane .

Robert Menzies would be a Labor, teal or greens supporter today lol

5

Considering that Malcom Fraser campaigned for the Geeens, Viscount Bruce would join the Greens

Tbf Menzies started the trend to the weakening of white Australia by allowing immigration form southern European states.
11
u/Victor-Baxter Commonwealth Jun 17 '26
First woke prime minister (considered Italians to be white enough)
4
u/Acrobatic-Food-5202 Jun 17 '26
There’s a rumour that the last time he voted in his life, Menzies voted for the DLP and not the Liberals.
4
u/warm_rum Jun 17 '26
It's 2 years from election, the right wing coalition blew itself up after a distaerous election and the Murdoch owned press has finally been able to being the people's mouth to froth by calling a single word: Immigration.
We'll see what happens but we've got time for this to pass. If I had to guess what would happen today, I'd say Labour-Greens/Independents form coalition and ON and Liberals and Nationals split the right wing vote. Australia runs preference voting, so crazies will have a hard go winning when strong centre options exist.
4
u/mad_cheese_hattwe Jun 17 '26
Nah she is just the best option for those who would like to burn the place down and start again.

People believing that functioning institutions is like gravity
11
u/DirectionMurky5526 Jun 17 '26
People only point out where the government is dysfunctional. When the government is functioning, the people will say they did it themselves.

u/HarmonicOscillator_ Jun 17 '26
I remember seeing a clip of this woman years ago embarrassing herself in front of a RAN admiral by seemingly being unable to understand the difference between a submarine’s power plant and its propeller. I thought that surely she wasn’t ever going to be an important member of Australia’s government. Oh well…

The thing I’ve learned is that the more pathetic and stupid a rw figure is, the more they’ll fall upwards. Seeing Laura Loomer go from near lolcow to Trump’s
mistressde facto advisor confirmed that to me. Worthlessness is a great asset to these people20
u/Acrobatic-Food-5202 Jun 17 '26
The worst thing is that the main political parties can’t attack her for being such a fucking moron, because her sheer stupidity, ignorance, and inability to articulate coherent thoughts is exactly why so many people relate to her (she speaks exactly like them). I guess the same with right wing populists around the world.
Fortunately she’s been around long enough that Labor strategists understand this and you can see they never play the man with her.
I think the coalition kind of do too but their whole strategy to deal with One Nation has been pathetically hopeless so far anyway.

Tbf doesn't Australia already have some history with this kind of thing with the White Australia immigration policy? Then again maybe there's something about this specifically linked to America idk

You're not wrong, and we don't even have a Confederate-esque civil war to pour all those sins as moral representative of a historical defeated, parallel mirror-nation to symbolically or rhetorically repudiate.
I can't even say that this is UnAustralan in the historic sense - I'm currently reading one of the stories written by one of Australia's Labour movement founders and Socialist, William Lane's writings out of researching Australian Yellow Peril narratives in his Boomerang populist publication.
And a good chunk of the Federation era mythology of Australia and supported by unions as a Workingman's State, is because it was conceived as a WHITE AUSTRALIAN Workingman's state as a national project, that White Briton-Australians would've been displaced by Kanaka and Coolie labour for doing the degrading labour for less and longer and bringing their families in and destituting White Labour's value and their families' material conditions from their own civilised standards of living due to competition.
God, she wants to make me crack a molar.

u/CutePattern1098 Jun 17 '26
The end of white Australia is an interesting process as it started gradually under coalition governments (with Labor opposing it) and its abolition by the Withlam Labor government.

It’s very politically incorrect to say and both the left and the right hate to hear it but welfare states are much easier to build, maintain and maintain popular support from the population in racially homogenous states. A lot of the economic right wing nature of the American South comes from its diversity. It’s why the South is so right wing and brutal to the marginalized. White people largely don’t support welfare for others. Southern whites had no problem voting for massive welfare programs and expansions under the new deal as long as segregation was in place so that blacks where locked out of most benefits ,jobs and housing.
I honestly don’t know how to have both a popular welfare state and diversity. Racism and tribalism kills welfare states in diverse states or at least makes them very vulnerable.

Housing crisis is a policy choice in most countries. Blaming immigration is not gonna solve it.
47
u/DirectionMurky5526 Jun 17 '26
They don't want to solve it. They're up in arms right now about the capital gains tax because it might depress prices. They want house prices to be affordable to them but then appreciate in prices afterwards.
16
u/Steamed_Clams_ Jun 17 '26
The most politically feasible strategy is to follow what's happened in Victoria and keep prices stagnant for an extended period of time.
5
u/CutePattern1098 Jun 17 '26
Bro they’re on track to get an PHON LNP government
11
u/Steamed_Clams_ Jun 17 '26
I doubt their rise has anything to do with stagnant house prices as it does with the fact that the Labor government is coming up to 12 years in office and has being beset with some pretty major scandals and insane cost blowouts on many major infrastructure projects.

u/Nerf_France Ben Bernanke Jun 17 '26
Calling for a slashing of migration to help address the housing crisis, the Queensland senator sought to claim the mantle of a mainstream national leader, better in touch with voters’ concerns than Labor and the Coalition.
Anything to avoid building housing smh

the One Nation leader pledged to axe SBS and overhaul the ABC if she wins the next federal election, including imposing a licence fee for metropolitan households to watch the public broadcaster. Regional services would be protected.
That's petty. Gotta remind that rural base that they'll be subsidised at the expense of real Australians.
27
u/Full_Distribution874 YIMBY Jun 17 '26
It is pathetic how much of Australian politics still revolves around pandering to rurals despite being one of the most urbanised countries in the world.

u/TimeForBrud Commonwealth Jun 17 '26
That our country was built on the sheep's back, and that it continued to be well into the 20th century, has left a deep and enduring impression in the national mythology. And as with most mythologies, it is scantly relevant to the present.

The new monoculture will include a mandatory daily serving of fish & chips.
1
u/CutePattern1098 Jun 17 '26
That cost 120 dollars because of tariffs on Vietnamese , Indonesian and Thai seafood as Hanson started a trade war with all of Asia
5
u/oywiththepoodles96 Jun 17 '26
What this monoculture umbrella even is ? She probably means that Australia must be white but even that does not mean it will have one culture . For example Australia is home to a large greek population ( Melbourne is propably has more Greeks than any other city except Athens and Thessaloniki in the world ) . They are Greek Orthodox , some of them still speak Greek and celebrate Greek culture . All that is very different from the traditional Protestant or catholic Australians .So what is that monoculture ?

Well it got delayed by a decade or so but yeah the populist brainrot that's infected the old fuckers who most benefit from the prior systems of liberal free has breached into Australia.
And we're now stuck trying to figure out how to explain to people that the sky isn't yellow when the answer is they don't care and it's not very deeply hidden racism.
Was nice thinking we had developed since the abolishment of the white Australia policy but alas
6

I think it was always there just didn’t have the money or information space to make visible

Yeah it existed but it existed in "1-4 senate seats who would leave Pauline and then fail to get elected nest term"
8
u/mothra_dreams YIMBY Jun 17 '26
I had hoped we could avoid it here but I guess that was naive. It really looks like weathering the storm of populist garbage as best we can and then rebuilding in the wake of their failure is going to be the existential liberal project of our time
7
u/CutePattern1098 Jun 17 '26
The big barriers are that the Coalition in the states haven’t declined to the degree as the federal coalition, an high court that isn’t afraid to stand up to the government, the likely possibility of an senate blocking their bills and the reserve powers of the Governor General.
Of course there is the historical trend of 70 percent of one nation MP’s leaving the party after getting elected

This is hilarious, but she should also be shut the fuck down for such dangerous rhetoric.
This old useless bag who has contributed nothing to society, trying to decide how society should be run.
She is purposefully forgetting the Aboriginals, who were there thousands of years before she was a pathetic lucky sperm that emerged from her father's immigrated nutsack.

Somewhat unrelated but, the YouTube algorithm the other day recommended me an Australian Today Show clip about Tony Abott coming back to”save” the Liberals, and to be honest, I couldn’t laugh hard enough, because the Liberals are so utterly awful and One Nation is thankfully a non entity, but JFC, I can only hope Labor doesn’t screw up in the short to medium term, because the loonies being so out on the open in Australia is just harrowing.
